gdm, but I checked it on light too, same thing
On lightdm @htorque's answer is supposed to work.
Well, it's easy to test. Open users-admin. Open /etc/gdm/gdm.conf (or light). Check the Don't prompt for password box. You'll see it does not alter the config file, yet if you log out then back in, it works right away. open the config file and it will e unaltered
@jrg shoot
nvm i see you've fixed it
jrg
jrg
Now I need a fart app icon. groans what kind of an icon would that be?! :P
@bambuntu I don't have users-admin nor /etc/gdm/*
13:05
It's the password program. and /etc/lightdim/lightdm.conf
@jrg A brown-greenish cloud.
Cartoonish.
3< <- bum farting | 3-- <- bum pooping
jrg
jrg
well thats the default one M$ gave me, I kinda like it.
@bambuntu If you set that Automatic login option then the config file /etc/lidghtdm/users.conf will be altered.
That is not my experience.
13:08
What Ubuntu version do you use?
Do you use Unity3D?
I'll fire up 12, so I'm using lightdm, but this does not work for gdm. I'm going just verify it again.
Not sure what that is.
jrg
jrg
5.4 Your app must not contain or display content that a reasonable person would consider to be obscene - So um, we're all reasonable people here, are farts "obscene"?
@bambuntu lsb_release -r will return your Ubuntu version.
@jrg Farts are not obscene at all.
It is something totally natural.
jrg
jrg
ok, i'm ok then.
how's that for a fart icon
13:15
I'm firing up 12
jrg
jrg
@rlemon I like it...
My browser is on a slow computer, so I'm crashing alot
Let me guess, Windows. :)
@jrg there is no fire... so i dunno.
wonders if he can still find his Lindows disc
jrg
jrg
Heh.
Unfortunately, my dreams of a 5-star fart app are short lived. :( Microsoft wants me to be 18 in order to submit it to them.
13:20
Otherwise they can't sue you.
You sure want to be able to sue your developers. :D
ok, just tested
@jrg 50/50 i'll submit it for you ;)
jrg
jrg
I'll just talk Dad into doing it for me. :)
we'll start a company... call it J.R. Gee why did I ever partner with rlemon

Does that give the impression of inset text to you guys?
Do you know how I could make it a bit prettier?
The shadow.
Good idea, I need a picture of the cover of The Shadow on that site. :D
@OctavianDamiean looks good to me.
playing around with the colours may help
i'm assuming you've seen this
O HAI! No. :D
Thanks.
13:36
@Octavia, checked Ubuntu 12. Does not work.
I probably don't understand what you're trying to achieve then.
It's gnome-system-settings->user accounts. autologin checkbox. It does not affect the /etc/lightdm/user.conf file.
It does for me though.
I'm on 11.10.
How did you test?
By performing the actions and checking whether the file got changed or not. :)
13:39
I've got 11 too, I 'll give it a try.
The 11 is not as important as the following numbers.
There is 11.04 and 11.10.
Do you have more than one user? Because I do, and there are not entrie for each user
I have only one user.
does that look a little more embedded for you?
13:41
@bambuntu Oh god, I'm sorry. I meant the file /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
I just check 11.04. Doesn't change that file.
That file gets changed, not the users.conf ...
make: *** [build-stamp] Error 2
dpkg-buildpackage: error: debian/rules build gave error exit status 2
!@#$
ok, I'll check that. That's what I've verified already on 10.04 and 10.10
13:42
doesn't work on those.
@rlemon Yup but I can't use background-clip. :)
@OctavianDamiean that sucks.
@bambuntu How can you verify a lightdm setting on 10.04 and 10.10?
Did you install lighdm yourself on those versions?
jsfiddle.net/rlemon/jptpC/3 <- @OctavianDamiean version 2.0
Oli
Oli
@jokerdino has that allocation gone yet? Just pushed the fixes to help stop it happening in the future
13:45
Yes, it got removed. Thanks!
Man, it looks so much better with background-clip. :(
why can't you use background clip
Because Firefox doesn't support background-clip text.
I know, it is friggin' amazing. :D
13:47
has anyone used the SimpleOpenID.class.php
That is the diff of lightdm.conf before and after ticking that checkbox.
I'm seeing that is changing it on 12. But, it seems to only contain one user at a time.
I created a new user, and checked autologin, and the other entry dissapeared. It seems to toggle them. I'm lookingfor the real config file.
@bambuntu Well you can't have multiple users auto-login apparently.
That is the real config file.
Sureyou can.
I've had a whole list of them do it.
How would that work!?
13:54
Creates x number of user. check the box.
Automatically login means that it doesn't even show the unity-greeter.
You mean passwordless login.
Yes.
That is a totally different story then. ;)
Ok, so I've confused them.
Yup.
Give me a second, I'm sure that question was already asked.
13:56
They seem intuitively the same.
@jrg Is it possible that we don't have a question dealing with enabling passwordless login?
It is possible, I reckon
I also see the terms are being smattered. As I was doign.
I guess I could ask a question that differentiates the two, so it's atleast up.
Well you could convert your current question.
It is what you wanted to ask.
I'll write an answer.
That's true, but I don't find that fair for those who commented after. Unless it's just grammar or clearity.
It makes them lookliek they answered or commented poorly.
14:09
@bambuntu Comments can be deleted.
By others who have not commented?
OpenID anyone
anyone
common
:P
@bambuntu By moderators. ;)
Oh, ok. Well, if it could be cleaned up I'll just rewrite it.
I'll go ahead and get it started. It like, really important I get the answer.
I tried strace to find the file, but I'm just not guru
14:13
Alright, so the question still is how to enable passwordless login from the command line right?
Could you please generalize it a bit? Asking for a GUI and command line method?
That way we can cover both and have a canonical question for that topic. :)
@StefanoPalazzo o/
Have you read my GTalk message to you?
hi :)
@OctavianDamiean that is pretty cool!
heh
There is also this add-on. Python shell for Google Chrome
@Octavia. Sure. And thanks. Pardon my bad connection.
can someone check to see if my openid auth works for them? chat.rlemon.com I'm not storing anything... just dumping all request vars back upon successful authorization.
jrg
jrg
@OctavianDamiean Maybe.
Entirely possible.

Q: How do I make Ubuntu not ask me for my password?

DeaDEnDI'm confident that I do not need a password for my computer. How do I remove passwords for things like when the screensaver activates and installing software?

like this?
heh, @Octavian you commented on this as well :)
@StefanoPalazzo Oh boy ...
Just posted my answer.
DAMN!
@jrg yeah but why does it do it repeatedly over and over again? (Google talk), and only for you?

A: Enable/Disable Prompt For Login Password Via Command Line

Octavian DamieanHere is how you can enable passwordless login from Ubuntu 11.10 onward. Go to System Settings → User Accounts Unlock the administrative functions by clicking the Unlock button in the top right corner and entering your password. Select the user for which you want to enable passwordless login....

:(
You reckon I should post that as an answer to the first one?
Just submitted an apport-collect from tty1 using a text browser O.o
Say whaa?
14:30
:D
You should get a heroic bug reporter badge. :D
Ugh... Why does openid suck for me
@Octavian. In your answer, I see that the thing you clearified with me, is sort not the way you worded it.
@StefanoPalazzo Rereading the question you've posted I think it is not really the same question. :/
Not sure which answer to undelete.
@bambuntu What do you mean?
if you undelete your answer on the old one, you could flag the new one as a duplicate
Ok, I was confused about passwordless login and auto login. Your answer is about auto login, but you use the term passwordless login.
14:38
Oli
Oli
@bambuntu What is the question? I've just submitted an answer but I'm still not sure it's what you're after.
Ok, just a sec. I have to read.
My notes re gone!
NOOOOOO!!!!!!
@StefanoPalazzo The question is where it is more correct? :)
@Oli or @OctavianDamiean can one of you check something for me?
14:39
Sure.
@bambuntu My answer is about passwordless login, not auto-login.
Oli
Oli
We need an ubbottu-style !ask command.
@OctavianDamiean What's the difference?
@OctavianDamiean not really, the old questions is about disabling password prompts everywhere, but it'd be easier to find there anyway
!ask openid --login http://chat.rlemon.com
@Oli Auto login will automatically log the specified user in without presenting the unity greeter.
and the new question is a dupe, isn't it?
Oli
Oli
14:41
@William Notes are no longer shown on the Web UI (happened yesterday IIRC) but Tomboy can still sync them
@OctavianDamiean Is that not just setting the timeout?
only my launchpad openid credentials are working.
@Oli I'm not sure what technique is used to achieve that to be honest.
I didn't even know that there is a timeout.
@rlemon did you get my message earlier?
Time to fire up my VMs
Oli
Oli

@rlemon hm?

@rlemon chat.rlemon.com hangs
@rlemon I think your problem is with a bios setting
@jrg give it a minute or two.
@Allan what setting are you thinking :P
@rlemon sata
jrg
jrg
14:44
ok, so now I got a array with my lp openid stuff
@OctavianDamiean I thought when you were passwordless login, you don't have to enter a password, you just enter, whereas autologin, I'm guess you don't get the greeter.
That's what I thought you made clear to me.
That is what I believe as well, yes.
I'm testing it in a VM.
@jrg ok. but why does it not work for g+ or facebook?
Oli
Oli
@bambuntu Yeah, I think the only difference between the two is that one has a shorter timeout set. The greeter is still running, it's just doing its auto-login quicker.
Ok, nice answer, you should put it back.
jrg
jrg
14:46
No idea.
@Allan ok I am also noticing that is setup for a Non-OS2 OS
Time out?
@rlemon sata controller type setting ide to ahci if thats possible in your bios
@bambuntu Just tested it.
You don't see the unity greeter at all, you'll log straight in.
@Allan nope - no options for that. however my device only takes CF
14:49
So, that is autologin?
@rlemon CF?
@Allan Compact Flash (ssd)
@rlemon is that the one in the video youtube.com/watch?v=1CQboj6mmGM
yes
14:50
If you set passwordless login for an user you just won't have to enter any password when you login.
Now that's what I'm looking for. I have write a script that enables and disables it based on conditions.
passwordless, not auto
Yup. I have added a GUI solution for that, let's see who comes up with a command line solution.
Thanks Octavia. Oli says it's a timeout difference.
I don't know what timeout is.
@rlemon do you think a network install might work? help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/Netboot

Q: MinimalCD Network autoconfiguration fails

rlemonI'm attempting to get an Ubuntu MinimalCD Install working without much luck.. Working from the guide posted here I can get the CD to boot and I select the Command-Line Installer option. After selecting my Language and Keyboard settings the installer fails on Configure the network with DHCP with...

I can try
but I got held up on the minimal cd installer because it wouldn't load the proper driver.
@OctavianDamiean The gui solution would be easy for autologin, because the button is right there in your picts.
@rlemon does that board have an Ide connector
> 2 x EIDE, 2 x SATA, 1 x FDD, 1 x LPT, 5 x RS-232, 1 x RS-232/422/485, 1 x K/B, 1 x Mouse
And i've put a plotech audio / usb board on it as well so I have 4x USB2.0
@bambuntu Well of course you could also turn on auto-login but I didn't describe that.
I've described passwordless login. ;)
14:59
@rlemon Still no luck? :o
i've read that thread. I do not have those bios options.
@BrunoPereira nope :<
> Onboard Lan Boot ROM
what would that do?
That looks for PXE servers on the network to boot from
ahh
yea that'll boot QNX
Is there a way to put pics in comments?

@QuestionsFeed wtf O.o
In your answer.
@Oli @bambuntu [link text](http://url/ "optional title") <- be complete ;)
@Allan It's not QuestionsFeed's fault this time.
15:03
why the bounty thats nuts
here are my bios options
rcs20 did that.
Oli
Oli
@Allan They say they want to reward a specific answer
The cut-off option is the Onboard Lan Boot ROM option
15:04
@Oli Does that even work on a CW!?
@rlemon I dont think there are many BIOS settings that can be related with your issue :/
@BrunoPereira lol

@rlemon I think your only remaining option... it to put this little computer on a plane and also smuggle some snakes and some snake pheromone on too, and release the pheromone when the plane hits its max altitude. The snakes will kill everybody and your computer will end up rotting at the bottom of the sea.
Best outcome for everybody, really.
15:08
my bios had a 'load failsafe options'

Unless Samuel L. Jackson's a passenger too. He really doesn't like snakes on his planes.

@jokerdino Funny you should say that...
I also found the 'paraphernalia' section which allows me to turn on and off serial ports.
@rlemon I had a look around and some people complain that the chipset in your network card is a bit tricky to work with, some report that "if the card is disabled in windows via the driver it will stay off an survive reboots". The best sugestion until now was really get another card and use that one instead :/
@BrunoPereira it is embedded.
