@chaskes You can?
How?
+ + + + + + + ?
:P
Right click the title bar and choose minimize from the menu. Or use gnome tweak too to make the minimize button appear.
I'm not trying to advocate for one DE over another since I basically like them all, but in gnome the minimize button isn't exactly needed since it's more based on using the spread from the super key or alt-tab to cycle through. Unless you're running the extension for a window bar, minimizing doesn't make a lot of sense since it just goes away. Again, not advocating, just pointing out.
so... what's wrong with forking and maintaining unity 7 without stupid issues?
like, idk, good notifications and better customization
is Unity OSS?
hmm. quick/dumb question. Is there some way I can bootstrap a ubuntu install from another install?
00:22
er.... i.. sort of?
@chaskes Actually right clicking on the menu bar and selecting "minimize" isn't a big deal... not sure I need an extension just to put a dash on top left to make it minimize.
If you don't have graphics drivers, a clone is doable.
ah. eh. not quite what I was thinking, and I just realised I'm going to have another issue bite me in the nose.
ubuntu is pretty damn system-agnostic.
o_O
Kubuntu is 989MB now?
00:23
@TheWanderer That's not a lot.
no just the kubuntu-desktop meta package
Kubuntu uses less system resources when it's running right?
14.04 had a pretty nasty memory leak
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I think the 989MB is disk usage.
but I'm pretty sure it was fixed in 15.04
00:24
Of course, packages are compressed, so it would occupy more once installed.
yeah, this is filesize
No I meant it uses less RAM when running compared to Unity.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix My point just that minimizing is possible. I made no comment on the deal-iness of it. But I think it's not a big deal.
@NathanOsman it's a 300MB download. 989MB disk usage
pretty impressive compression imo
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I've got three tabs open in Chrome, Qt Creator, and Konsole running. 1.8 GiB of RAM usage.
No idea how that compares to Unity.
00:25
well since Budgie still doesn't have a window switcher, it's time to give KDE another go
So, github doesn't let me fork my own stuff ?
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy lol
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy How would that work?
@chaskes Well the "deal-iness" for me is I don't minimize windows very often, and navigating over the tiny button (-) takes me time so right click anywhere on title bar is probably just as fast if not faster.
@NathanOsman I've no idea . . . And that's true of all that I do . . .
00:26
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy .-.
wouldn't that be a branch?
Serg is right
you can't fork
it just redirects back to the project
@NathanOsman The point is I recall reading Kubuntu was light on resources like Lubuntu
A branch or even a tag would work for the same purpose.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix nooooooo
nonononono
Meh, I'll make a new repo
00:26
KDE is notorious for being resource-intensive
I am doing that with NitroShare. Lots of things are changing so rather than breaking the master branch, I started a new branch.
I'll rebase and then merge later.
it looks like they may have worked on that
@TheWanderer yeah, KDE didn't make my old laptop happy when I tried Kubuntu desktop 2 years ago
@TheWanderer is right. KDE is not the lightest DE by a long shot.
But.
With 16 GB of RAM, it works fine for me.
00:27
Enlightenment is probably the best RAM-wise.
yeah KDE is not the DE for old computers
Lel . . . 16 GB of RAM ought to be enough for everyone . . . #FamousLastWordsBeforeInternetRoastsMe
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I'm just not sure why you think I said anything that disagrees with your points. :) I rarely even bother to minimize in gnome since like I said it's more geared to choosing windows through the spread or alt-tab. Plus, standard gnome doesn't have a window bar for the minimized win to land on anyway.
Damn 16GB ram from Memory Express went from 100 bucks and change to 180 bucks since the loonie took a swan dive :(
I run Enlightenment on an old netbook with a 1 GHz Atom CPU and 1 GB of RAM. Feels like new. Well, until you launch Chrome.
00:28
I have 24GB in my server and let me tell you, running 3 MC servers fills that up fast @SergiyKolodyazhnyy
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Do you have enough slots for two 8 GB chips?
@NathanOsman CHROME MUST FEEEEED
Two 8 GB chips are waaaay cheaper than a single 16 GB chip.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix was that English?
@NathanOsman It's a lap top with only two SODIMM slots, right now there are two 4 GB modules.
00:29
@TheWanderer Firefox is a little better but not by much and it's slow.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix get two 8GB
What Chrome really needs is re-design and whatever that word is . . .
@NathanOsman what happened to Firefox? It used to be so great
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Buy two 8 GB chips and remove the others.
ah, optimization
00:29
@TheWanderer Stuff happens.
@TheWanderer Like I said the price of two 8 GB went up to 180 bucks since the loonie (canadian dollar) took a swan dive (went down in exchange rate CAD:USD)
Code gets added, no code gets removed... voilà, bad performance.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I can get an 8 GB stick for about $45 on Amazon.
Oh wait.
Laptop memory.
Forgot about that part.
00:30
lel
I've forgotton your memory already.
Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!
I only have two slots, so I'm stuck at 16 GB unless I buy a 16 GB stick.
@TheXed Yooooooooooooooooooooooo.
I have plans to buy a new laptop in 18 months, it'll have 32 gb I'm sure.
You should buy my new computer @NathanOsman I will sell it to you for $1500
00:32
The one with I-7-7700 chip that cost 6 grand?
Yup..
Actually nah I changed my mind..its not for sale anymore...
He should buy it... I would if it was a laptop
case closed... NOT FOR SALE
...next!
I'll sell my old one to you...
old i7 7700 laptop? I thought they only made 6700
No my old desktop...
00:34
Right now I'm on 3630 QM
with the AMD Phenom II or whatever it was..
I'm not sure a desktop will fit in my knapsack.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix you need a bigger knapsack :-D
@TheXed How long will the desktop battery last at the mall before I have to plug it in?
Depends on how big of a car battery you have..
00:35
Anybody have done the traffic light control type of thing in the past ?
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy no.
@TheXed Do I have to buy a car battery? Can't I bring my UPS with me in my bigger knapsack?
OK, yay. . . . Well, that's what I'll be doing for a project, so I'll probably be annoying the heck out of this chat with question
@WinEunuuchs2Unix well sure...so I would give it maybe 30 mins...
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy that is as clear as mud to me...
yes... @SergiyKolodyazhnyy, next job idea is apply for Markiplier Dedicated IT.
00:39
@TheXed 30 minutes might be pushing it.... unless you don't plug in the monitor and leave it in sleep mode every 2 minutes....I bought a cheap UPS... I think I'll stick to my laptop now (which is really a coffee-table-top (as I have a wireless Logitech keyboard on my lap (and a wireless mouse beside me (so I'm not using laptop's touchpad)))).
@KazWolfe Yup, that'd be awesome . . . Pity he's using Windows, but I'll deal with that, meh
i can fix that.
also, i do have video production and similar experience.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix hmmm...2 ups will power my network for about 35 mins at work if the power goes out... looks like you need a bigger UPS.
@TheXed well, it's unclear to me as well, but shouldn't be too hard to figure out. It's a "classic" problem. 2 streets, 3 lights + 1 arrow on each side. So Need to control 8 bits in specific order, aka state machine
@TheXed My UPS powers my apartment living room fan in the winter, and my sony tv in the summer. My laptop doesn't need a UPS, just the USB cable running from UPS to laptop to tell it when power goes out.
00:42
@WinEunuuchs2Unix well you know what they say...the bigger they are the harder they fall...or in our case the harder they fail.
ooh
KDE looks pretty nice now
@TheXed Your servers should definitely be protected. halon fire protected dedicated server room is better too.
Now, I can go classical , implement everything on very very low level of J-K flip-flops . . . Or maybe I could get away with a case statement
@WinEunuuchs2Unix lets not get to fancy...I do work for a school district...off site backups was cheaper...
KDE is killing my CPU though
00:44
Yeah halon fire suppression is more a mainframe era thing.
kills the fire and people without oxegen masks.
In other news, if I don't drink or eat , I can save up enough money for ticket to China this month . . . But I also need a visa
We do have fire suppression systems...but I doubt it is Halon...
Nope Halon was banned by the EPA...
The Halon systems I've seen were in Canada...
I should just put the servers in the fire safe room at our district office...that will keep them safe...
or at least the backups...
Just take the backups home....and call that off-site
well gotta make supper and stuff....back later :)
00:49
Well they are already scattered throughout the district...so say high school gets backed up to district office, district office to middle school...or vice versa...
So if a building burns down there is always a good backup somewhere...
@NathanOsman can you tell me what package this file is in? /usr/bin/systemsettings5
cc @SergiyKolodyazhnyy, check my bragging on discord. :D
AGH
Settings crashes when I try to set a theme
Anyone ever use Vivaldi?
01:00
do you know what the theme manager package is? maybe something's corrupted
@TheXed Yes. Brave is better.
Built in adblocking.
@NathanOsman honestly? imdb.com/title/tt1217209
@TheXed Nononononono
@NathanOsman no need for built in adblocking....pi-hole.net
01:01
This: brave.com
@TheXed Does that block YouTube ads?
@NathanOsman yes, but I have youtube red so it wouldn't matter...
I would have it too except this is Canada.
I have a Google Play Music subscription.
Yes me too...
otherwise I wouldn't have youtube red
Stupid government regulations make everything a royal pain.
I pay for it for the music...the ad-free youtube is a nice perk though...
01:03
It is if your country provides it...
@NathanOsman - what's up? doing my new "nightwatch.js" browser automation/unit testing job now. Work from home except for 4 hours a week
Not much.
Just working away at my mDNS implementation for Qt.
I will say Vivaldi is very fast.
Brave is very fast too.
anything is fast if you disable javascript . . . which also sucks because most websites use it . . . amazon works without it though so that's a plus
01:09
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy fair enough...and yes Java is a double edged sword.
be back in a few
I saw a post once about Java and JavaScript . . .lemme find it
Let me be clear. I was not a fan of nightwatch.js, but it's what they already had
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy about how it need to die a quick and painless death?
I like Vivaldi's GUI
01:12
Different post, but the text is what matters
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy EEWWW!
@TheXed well,that too
Thumbs up for hamsters eating ham , anyone ?
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy oh, I thought maybe it meant making ham out of hamsters...
@TheXed well . . . there's a meme for that too
EWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
I prefer cats in my chinese food...
01:14
obviously a rabbit with a pancake on its head
not a hamster on a bun...
Here's your ham sandwich, that'll be about 3.50
<barf>
You might not even know it's javascript. If you get sequentially numbered divs from a low traffic site, it's probably running js under the hood even if it doesn't use js on the page.
OK, enough of that . . . time to go get my grade back . . . I hope I get enough to pass, or at least get up to 70%
01:16
I also have a pending PR in to pandas-datareader from the spare time tinkering. passes CI on pandas 3 and all supported versions of pandas. Have to get it to pass on 2.7 for three different versions of pandas.
also, I need to work on my handwriting, because apparently professor can't read my hand-written code . . .not that it's readable in typed form anyway
@SergiyKolodyazhnyy your professor is an idiot then...
is it to late to ask a question about Unity?
@TheXed ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Go for it.
Unity is still supported.
Never mind I figured it out.
01:19
I've sort of stopped questioning my professors . . . .at first i was freaking out, but now . . . professor's weirdness is normal
I'll never know why they named it "unity" anyway. So much confusion with the other Unity.
lol
also not a very unified experience
Yeah they should have named it "Disjointed"
KDE brought back Oxygen :D
Or even "disunity".
01:20
I hate Breeze
@NathanOsman I think MS was explaining it during presentation on DebCon, there's video on youtube
I like this application dashboard widget
i'll link it at some point tonight
I have just recently formed this really bad habit in the last five minutes and it is really pissing me off...
I assigned it to ctrl+space like Spotlight on macOS
01:21
@TheWanderer Yeah, just so many different widget and panel options.
but my poor CPU
From the little I've read Unity was only created because Gnome 3 was broken. From that point of view if Gnome 3.24 fixes things then they can abandon Unity switch back to Gnome and say "mission accomplished".
I keep hitting "ctrl+q" instead of "shift + 2"
Not CPU. RAM.
KDE isn't CPU hungry.
then why is my laptop acting as a space heater?
01:23
Must be Chrome.
I have one tab
@TheWanderer because your balls are cold?
I have 11 chrome tabs and CPU is running 3% to 7%.
actually my CPU is barely being used....
why the hell is my laptop so hot?
01:23
Is it intel laptop?
yehs
maybe it's the GPU?
@WinEunuuchs2Unix hwo is that possible I have 5 open and my cpu is 15-20%
I spent months on my intel laptop heat issues.
yeah I'm at 51C
GPU
so what is KDE doing with NVIDIA?
@TheXed I'm running Ubuntu 16.04 Unity... video isn't running.
Oh my Nvidia GPU is turned off, just Intel HD4000
01:25
heh. lxqt guys. waiting for it to land. waiting so hard.
Usage is 2% at idle for me.
I'm at 56 C but used to run at 86 C before I fixed things. When it was broken Intel Powerclamp would kick in and Kidle inject would make CPU look like 80%.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix What I inferred from the timing of unity and the phone launch that sort of flopped was going for a unified experience across devices. Then the indiegogo didn't make. It was a HUGE DEAL, but it didn't make.
Phone is stupid you can't compete with Apple and Google... Even Blackberry, Nokia and Microsoft failed... Canonical didn't stand a chance.
27 degree Celsious
01:28
That's damn good for a laptop Xed
@WinEunuuchs2Unix But Microsoft is still around.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix its not a laptop...
Yeah we use Microsoft scanners at work... I guess you could call them smartphones.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix ugh how many times have I told you this tonight :-P
@TheXed I know... the point is we were discussing Intel laptops and heat at 50+C
01:29
Oh...right then...my bad...
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Touchscreen, check. High pixel density display, check. Network connectivity, check. What are we missing? Of course that makes some refrigerators smartphones.
no worries :)
oops
I logged out when I was updating stuff
I have a Windows 10 phone...
now I've lost my title bars
@TheXed tr8r
01:29
and I like it...
HEATHEN
@TheWanderer it is the best camera you can put in your pocket..
@TheXed If it fits on your lap, it's a laptop.
Also:
user image
2
You look at your major telco's very little ad space for Windows phones.... that's a niche corporate culture market I think.
01:30
@NathanOsman I suppose I could put my desktop on my lap, but I think it would be uncomfortable after a while...
lol... that's what Xed wanted me to buy as my next laptop :p
@NathanOsman at least he doesn't have to go to the gym
@TheXed Nothing comes free...
@RobotHumans He doesn't seem like the sociable type anyway... :P
@WinEunuuchs2Unix yes I did...
@WinEunuuchs2Unix except give me a little credit...even I don't have a eMachine.
@TheXed How do we really know that?
01:31
@TheWanderer compiz crashed on login. if you're on xorg edgers and 14.04 - it happens to me too. i just swap to vt1 and restart compiz
My laptop weighs 10 lbs and has 17.3" 1920x1080 screen. 2 hard drive bays, 1 mSata SSD drive bay and 1 Optical drive bay... I don't think it's ever been on my lap for more than a few minutes.
@RobotHumans nah I have broken packages
and this is KDE
Because I don't think eMachines still exists and my computer is only a month old...
@WinEunuuchs2Unix my keyboard weight 5 lbs alone...
That's two stars in two minutes Nathan :)
Goin' for gold.
One more for laughs:
Okay maybe eMachines weren't all that bad...
01:35
@NathanOsman totally has nice airflow there
> "Only 1 percent of all eMachines systems needed to be replaced."
Yeah, all two of them.
Also . . . can I just say WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
I got back my exam, I'm at 79%
happy.gif saved . . . >.>
01:40
well apparently VPNC and secondary challenge-auth isn't supported by network manager
I need to put the side case back on my laptop....
and what's more, I have to set up a VM just to do work stuff... over that VPN over a restricted VLAN. Like, geez, they could do better setting up infrastructure and VMs...
@ThomasWard I feel for you...I have to have a Windows 7 VM to run a Cicsco VPN client so I can connect to work.
@TheXed well this is an Lubuntu VM
and it works fine with the scripts i wrote to handle VPN, etc.
besides I have to easily cycle VPN on and off for some things so BLAH.
GOOD NEWS is now I have a VM I can copy over to my workplace's network and make work perfectly lol
@ThomasWard hacker...
@ThomasWard oh wait, what is it that you do at work anyways?
@TheXed a little of everything IT.
@TheXed And not a hacker when I have access to the VPN profile already lol
@ThomasWard oh so like me...if it gets electricity, you probably get touch it as some point or another...
OK, now that I'm on the Intel GPU, KDE is great
02:02
I don't know how you guys embrace stuff so quickly... it takes me six months to stick my toes in the water... tonight I'm struggling to move the cursor in the terminal using bash.... which reminds me how do I figure out if "tput" is a native command or something I installed with apt-get?
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I use the arrow keys...
@TheXed well, when you're told "Do what you need to do to be able to do this task", and they know I am ITOverlord, well :P
@TheXed I don't think bash has a "left arrow" command.
@ThomasWard was that meant for me?
@WinEunuuchs2Unix no just hit the left arrow on your keyboard?
@TheXed yes but they talked so the replyto button was wrong so
glares at @TheWanderer
02:08
@TheXed In bash you have to use tput cub N where N is the number of cursor positions to move left.
@ThomasWard well yes...you see the problem with being the "IT Overlord" is that when everything is working correctly no one notices (but you are often working the hardest keeping things working correctly), but the second something breaks, everyone takes notice...
@TheXed Unless it's their fault because they're doing it wrong. So blah. Then I fix it. But in this case, it's tasks that need done and I'm the only one who can for now.
and you get 50 emails (not exaggerating), to tell you that it is down, but you can't get them because the internet is down...
LOL
@TheXed how fortunate for me, the people who are the "Hey it's broken" contacts know my other emails to reach me in an emergency. And my phone numbers.
the rest? Don't.
most of the stuff has been 'working', though so meh :P
yawns someone give me coffee
02:13
Yeah they use their phones to send me email's but I have no cell phone reception in my office...
so eventually I get a bunch of calls on my office phone...
and I am like I would be able to fix it if people would stop calling me every 20 seconds!
to complain about the same damn thing...
but I digress...
They act like they are the only person in the entire building to notice that the internet is down...
@TheXed users should never have your direct number IMO
also do you have a ticketing system?
It got leaked...
:/
02:22
@Seth yes I do, but people refuse to use it...
I wonder if you could ask for your number to be changed..
I built it from the ground up....with google forms...teachers click on a link on the webpage, fill out a form, it gets imputed into a spreedsheet, and I get an email notification...
of course that is kind of hard if the internet is down though...
or get one of those systems that says "we know x isn't working. if your call isn't about x, press 2"
@Seth I have had this number for years...to much of a hasle to change now...
and then change that number every day
02:24
oh that is a good idea...
@TheXed yeah that's tricky
I wish our phone system had that ability...
this just seems wrong. Docker inside a VMware ESXi VM.
@ThomasWard Oh? How about kubernetes running on DC/OS running on OpenStack? (and I think OpenStack can run on kubernetes, not sure though.)
let me rephrase
LXD or LXC are better than Docker, inside VMware ESXi.
02:39
ye mods: maybe re-open to close as dupe? askubuntu.com/questions/901011/…
anyone use pidgin?

Hmm so you probably don't know how to install the facebook plugin?
@muru of?
@TheXed don't use facebook, so no :/
@muru that atrocity belongs in /dev/null
