that was a waste haha OP deleted it
@Zanna thanks!
@Zanna as long as it is gone :)
good morning chat
21:15
@JacobVlijm hah any time :D

As I don't order things like this very often if at all, I have no idea from where to get a bullet proof vest which I'm sure actually bullet proof. Does anybody know a good and trustworthy provider for such clothing?
@Edity morning :)
Good afternoon Edity
user136984
Since the attack in London, I have decided to just get a little more paranoid.
;-;
21:16
The odds are better of dying in a traffic accident @ParanoidPanda better stay indoors using your logic.
user136984
@WinEunuuchs2Unix: Maybe, but I would still like to get some sort of body armour.
user136984
If something happens, it probably won't be much use anyway, but I would just like to have something.
sudo apt-get install memorium
user136984
So I assume that the answer is nobody knows?
user136984
If so, I will have to see if I can find some more paranoid people... :D
21:18
Umm... a pocket-full of rocks to throw at would be terrorists with knives like London had?
user136984
Well, I've got a steal sword, but I probably won't be happening to carry that with me when something happens.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix or getting struck by lightning
An inflatable car crash bag to set-off if would be terrorist tried to run you down in a crowd? Really trying to prepare for such things is futile. That said whenever I cross street I'm mentally prepared and ready to react for a car to hit me... jump and roll over the hood (bonet in Zanna speak)
@Zanna lightning isn't always fatal... who knows might be free 1950's style electro-shock treatment from higher power :p
:/
user136984
Well, if I could find some military-grade full body armour I would feel a little safer...
21:22
They sell kevlar clothing and knife-cut resistant gloves shrugs
windows is spamming me with cheesy stuff
user136984
@Edity: Just get some crackers and you can have a nice snack! ;P
You should ditch windows.... try this thing called "Ubuntu"... I've heard people like it :)
i'm eating crackers tho
user136984
@WinEunuuchs2Unix: Yes, I guess that there will be something somewhere out there.
21:23
@WinEunuuchs2Unix VMware edition
I'll be using Windows 8.1 soon and running Ubuntu and this chatroom in a virtual box.
user136984
@Edity: Then you're all set to go Wallace! ;P
"how likely are you to recommend Cortana to another friend?" me: NAH DON'T USE CORTANA USE SIRI
"your microsoft account needs attention to get insider previews"
me: NAAH, IF IT'S BROKEN DON'T FIX IT
crickets chirping
user136984
I wish the Arch GNOME maintainers would hurry up with shipping in 3.24.
What features are you looking forward to in new Gnome?
user136984
21:29
The Night Time mode.
user136984
That would be really useful to me.
user136984
Or whatever it's called.
user136984
There is also a bug I found today in my 3.22 installation which I would like to report.
user136984
However I can't do that until I've tested it against 2.24 which I don't have.
user136984
I'm not sure, but I think that it's probably Arch specific.
user136984
21:31
So I can't just test it on another distro.
@ParanoidPanda I just posted a similar answer to night time mode last week: askubuntu.com/questions/894460/… Gnome calls their new feature Night Light
Night Light and similar packages work by adjusting color balance... adding more red at night. Mine works by reducing display brightness before sunset and increasing display brightness after sunrise.
Bonus it tells you when sunrise and sunset is :p
user136984
22:32
@WinEunuuchs2Unix: I find it hard to sleep at night because I'm using my machine so close to that time.
user136984
So I think that this feature might just be my saviour.
user136984
I think it's probably the really bright colours that do it.
user136984
I should probably also just try not using it up until such a late time, but that's difficult because I have lots of work to do and not much time in the day to get it done so now is really the only time for me.
user136984
Anyway...
user136984
Goodnight folks! :)
maybe better merge than dupe?
@ByteCommander shrug They're essentially the same thing. I'll let the more experienced users decide what to do with it :)
@AndroidDev You're more experienced than me! Certainly entitled to comment freely.
Ohhh I see Byte answered that question nominated as dupe... makes sense now :)
23:29
@ByteCommander so I can direct both stderr and stdout to a file, but is there a way to prepend everything from stderr with, say, "E:"?
sed
let me compose something...
OK
this is what it is right now btw >> /data/media/0/Zacharee1Mods/output.log 2>&1
(btw let me advertise my answer about this here, which only needs 5 more votes for score 100 askubuntu.com/a/731237/367990)
whoa
that's a nicely formatted table
downvoted
23:34
muahahahahahahahaha
envy strikes again
envywinksl
Does it need to be the same logfile?
oh but look whose dp is green
@Zacharee1 The line order will be hard to preserve. Is it bad if error lines might be delayed?
@ByteCommander it'd be nice
hmm
@edwinksl hue
@ByteCommander is it possible to just prepend stdout with "I:" or something as well?
so then everything stays the same?
( lsb_release -a 2> >(sed 's/^/E: /') > >(sed 's/^/I: /') ) | tee both.out
23:40
whew
This is asynchronous though, as it uses two different process substitution subshells
so it can not guarantee on correct ordering
no way to make it synchronous?
Can someone please help me with my problem...askubuntu.com/questions/896901/…
23:41
I don't know, that would require my tool to know from which stream a line comes when it receives it...
@ByteCommander
But I only have one stdin
@ByteCommander I guess I'll just settle for not having them then
You may of course ask a question on the front page or on U&L
23:42
Maybe someone can find a more magically looking way
but it's not technically Ubuntu :p
and would it belong on U&L?
why not?
there you get the best shell gurus
if you manage to attract their attention
heheheheh
HALP MEH WIT DIS PROBLUM PLSSSSSS
23:43
but I think it's an interesting question, so your chances are probably not too bad
ask Serg too
I'll ask after I get this button listener working
it's just this one that has no effect when I press the button
it's weird
and share me the link when you posted it
oui monsieur
tres bien
@basketball sorry, I don't know
23:46
@Zacharee1 Actually, first result on DDG:

Q: How to capture ordered STDOUT/STDERR and add timestamp/prefixes?

Deim0sI have explored almost all available similar questions, to no avail. Let me describe the problem in detail: I run some unattended scripts and these can produce standard output and standard error lines, I want to capture them in their precise order as displayed by a terminal emulator and then ad...

That answer though... o.O much magic!
#!/bin/bash
exec 3>&1
coproc SEDo ( sed "s/^/STDOUT: /" >&3 )
exec 4>&2-
coproc SEDe ( sed "s/^/STDERR: /" >&4 )
eval $@ 2>&${SEDe[1]} 1>&${SEDo[1]}
eval exec "${SEDo[1]}>&-"
eval exec "${SEDe[1]}>&-"
I have no idea how to adapt that lol
lol
> Note several things:

It is a magic incantation for many people (including me) - for a reason (see the linked answer below).
Another alternative using fifos:
    # Create FIFOs for the command's stdout and stderr.
    stdout=$(mktemp -u)
    stderr=$(mktemp -u)
    mkfifo "$stdout" "$stderr"

    # Delete the FIFOs when this iteration of the loop finishes. Use `trap' to ensure
    # cleanup happens whether we finish normally or are signalled.
    trap 'rm -f "$stdout" "$stderr"' EXIT

    # Read from the FIFOs in the background, adding the desired prefixes.
    prefix 'O:' < "$stdout" >&1 &
    prefix 'E:' < "$stderr" >&2 &

    # Now execute the command, sending its stdout and stderr to the FIFOs.
