12:05 AM
Sooo... who wants screenshots from the NitroShare app? :D
3

^^^ Looks nice. Your creation @NathanOsman?

Sure is!
...and thank you.

Oooooo nice @NathanOsman!
Gotta get me a smart phone :P

It will run on Android 5.0+ (Lollipop).
Sadly, we needed some features that weren't available to older releases.

12:24 AM
^^^ I've finally finished Serg & Byte's Display Auto Brightness script which brightens screen after sunrise and dims screen before sunset. Now I watch the systray every minute as brightness reduces from 1200 to 300-- the settings in config file.
uh oh crap I spoke to soon it's running backwards...hehe

Lol. Oops.

OK working now... was subtracting from max bright instead of adding to min bright. Just have to wait for sunset at 6:18pm to see if it crashes.
Anyway @NathanOsman back to your Nitroshare project. I'm using Lollipop and Nautilus to move files to/from phone. How does yours differ?

It uses the network.
No need to plug the phone in.

Cool. I have wifi and bluetooth.

It uses WiFi.
And the speeds often match or exceed what I can get over USB.

12:38 AM
Sounds really slick. How was your experience working with Android SDK?

It's come a long way.
I remember the olden days when we had to use Eclipse :P

I'm afraid that's all greek to me. I know my Sony TV runs Android and has hdmi, usb, wifi, cat5 and bluetooth. Plus my Sony blu-ray player also has hdmi, usb, wifi, cat5 and bluetooth but not sure if it's running android or not. I know Android and Mac are both based on Linux but still haven't ventured into those fields yet.
Of course my laptop has hdmi, usb, wifi, cat5 and bluetooth too :)
^^^ It's amazing how many connection modes we have once you start to write them down.
Happy midnight @Zanna :) Long time no chat.

@NathanOsman nice!
Aw, my nexus 5 is still on kitkat

Unfortunately, DNS-SD with TXT records didn't come out until API level 21, which is Lollipop :(
So I'd have to write my own implementation in order to support older versions.

It is basically only the 'chromecast remote' right now anyway, only using Ubuntu rveryday

12:56 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix nitpick: cat5 is a cable type, not a port type. You want RJ-45 (better known as Ethernet, but it has other uses)

Yeah I have RJ-45... cat5 sounds cooler... plus I have chromecast built into tv. The old tv I bought a chromecast dongle for it in 2014 or so but only used it a couple of times and got bored.

Also, you can plug cat6 into that :)

if cat5 is blue is cat6 pink? :p

Cat 5/5E/6/6A all use an RJ-45 jack on the end in normal uses, but theoretically any CAT cable can use RJ-45 (unused pins are allowable)

The old POTs used cat-11 or is that a false memory?

1:00 AM
RJ-11
Which usually ran Cat3 cable.

yeah of course I meant that RJ-11.. 3rd beer typo :p
Just testing if you knew POTS = Plain Old Telephones :)

Well, more accurately, not just RJ-11

I guess you are a network guy at heart.

RJ-11 was used primarily with Cat3 for a single twisted pair, but installs usually had more.
For example, RJ-14 was usually used to allow power to be transmitted if biases weren't used, but for the most part everyone just called it RJ-11 and used xPyC notation to differentiate
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I do a little bit of everything. Development, servers, networking, database, telco/carrierops, NOC, helpdesk...

You're a bright guy... I'm just going to stick to niche-software markets... I can't cope with too much info.

1:08 AM
the downside is i'm not an expert in anything, just competent enough to get most stuff done.
Running your own tech startup for a while has that effect... You learn fast or you sink fast.

I ran a niche-software startup before and was quite successful until <insert long story here> happened. So I'll do a niche-software company again down the road I think.
There is no rush though....working as a warehouse receiver and witnessing the life of common men is an interesting social study. Mastering SQL can wait a bit longer.

1:47 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix you better start a niche Python company , so that you can hire me , XD

@Serg Hire you and half the room. So many wonderful people here experienced in so many fields.
Oh I finished Display Auto Brightness today... just have to take out all the echo debugs and comment the code before posting Q&A.

Definitely hire @NathanOsman . He's got all the skills a professional Linux dev needs and has done modules , Java, PHP, Go, C++ . . .gosh . . .
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Nice. I wanted to write an answer for your zenity question ( the one about maintaining settings file) , but i'll procrastinate some more until you post the other Q&A

@Serg You should write a zenity answer anyway. I already wrote an answer but if yours is better I'll certainly accept it :)
The same Zenity answer I wrote is used in the Display Auto Brightness program to configure transition periods after sunrise and before sunset.

Well, lets see if I manage to post it tonight. Lately I'm on answer-production decline, so to speak

It's hard to be in programming mode for yourself and answering mode for others at the same time!

2:00 AM
Yeah, sort of like that.

I feel bad I hardly do queue review anymore :(

I haven't done queue since that time in December when they cleared queue

I remember that day... Zach was posting screen shots left right and down the center :p
I peeked in a day or two ago and CV's were at 275.

2:32 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix it's cool, still sorting things out. Had no electricity until a couple days ago, but I'm working on the place step by step

@IanC Yeah I should have mentioned I had to book electric hook-up a week before I moved in. Forgot all about that detail.
I should mention I get rolls of coins from the bank for the laundry machines and keep them in containers in kitchen drawer. Always good to have lots of stock and never run out.

@Seth chess.org is the site that you play on, right?
Or is it chess.com ?
Or maybe it was this one: en.lichess.org
Yes, that was the one. Chrome remembered my login credentials :D

I used to play chess on yahoo.com until people used hacking programs to make the pieces move like crazy. Plus others told me people use PC chess games on the other side to make their moves. Might as well just play chess master solo.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix yeah, but it was cool to have no electricity for a while. Only thing that was a bit harsh was having no fan in the heat :p
Gotta get to work, still going to be a bit away from chat, no internet yet! But on the times I get some access I'll hop in here :)

@NathanOsman Two things to suggest : Chrome history/ bookmarks or a dedicated indicator with bookmark feature . . . Of course, I gotta place shameless self promo here ;)

2:43 AM
See you all!

@IanC Well at the end of the day you are now king of your own domain whether their was electricity or not.

See ya, @IanC

Have a good one Ian.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix that's true! I'm enjoying it even having to handle with the first difficulties :)
Have a good day you both @Serg @WinEunuuchs2Unix!

@NathanOsman yeah it's lichess. Best online chess site I've found.
They have a decent mobile app too.

2:50 AM
Ah.

3:10 AM
GAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!
@KazWolfe do you, by chance, know Smali?

Q: Attempt to invoke virtual method 'void android.widget.LinearLayout.setVisibility(int)' on a null object reference

Zacharee1I've been scouring the web trying things out, but I can't seem to find a solution that works to fix the following error: java.lang.RuntimeException: Unable to create service com.lge.signboard.aodservice.AodService: android.view.InflateException: Binary XML file line #26: Attempt to invoke virtua...

pls halp meh

> @Zacharee1 You need a a:q ratio of 3:4 to talk here. Please see this link for more details.
rip

3:34 AM
lol?
what link is that

wat

?

what link is what
@NathanOsman thx for defends

your quote says "Please see this link for more details."
so i am asking what link that is

3:39 AM
interesting requirement

yehs

> In detail, it looks like you don't meet our a:q ratio requirement of 3:4, as your current ratio is 383:259.
O_o

I'm not answering 3 questions to join an inactive room

Have I really asked that many questions?

@NathanOsman wait wat
but your ratio is way higher than 3:4

3:41 AM
No, it isn't.

383:259?

Oh, lol.
I was getting a bit confused there.
Hey, yeah, you're right. I should be allowed.

yup

@NathanOsman Woah now, hold up right there. Spamming the request access button will only get you banned. Come back in 24 hours and request again IF you have fixed the issues outlined in the last message. Requesting access again in less than 24 hours will result in a ban.
hahaha

What the crap.
I wish I was a mod. over there.
I'd show that bot who's boss around here.

3:44 AM
in goes @Seth

now their chat is probably confused by the influx of users

LOL.

there's on person there

Everyone else request access.
Quick.
Let's DDoS test the bot :P

yeah that'll work

3:45 AM
Well.

Your first message must be “I have read and understood the rules”.

I have some connections.

they have some questionable rules

what are they getting at wrt that ratio thing? That makes no quantitative sense.
My Q/A ratio is 1:1.. you'd think that was better than 3:4?

Yeah should it be < 3:4 or > 3:4 ? it can't be exactly.

3:47 AM
@Seth I'm going to see if I can get ahold of one of the chat mods over there.

also why hasn't the bot said something about my request

@NathanOsman you're not going to have much luck, I don't think.

bot plz, i need to know!

@edwinksl you dont matter

:(

3:48 AM
There's one RO online there

I've requested access for science. Because now they've got me curious.

^
same

This is disturbing.

@NathanOsman why?

3:49 AM
@Seth See the TL..

TL?

Move along.
Nothing to see here.

^^^ Lots to see here... It's like a net soap opera :)

Well the bot didn't yell at me so I assume my ratio is good enough.

i just realized i have asked 0 questions on SO, so i will probably not get access. rip.

3:53 AM
guess he isn't gonna join

ಠ_ಠ

IGNORED

"Yer bot is busted!"

hue
botsted
since Serg isn't here...

plz
oh look yet another AU person in the android chat

3:58 AM
CAT

whose cat

Annoyed cat is annoyed.

my cat
@NathanOsman well I woke him up and shined a light on him so yeah :p
now he's purring

cat be like "you stupid human don't disturb my sleep"

He's more patient than most humans.

4:10 AM
@Zacharee1 is that your dirty sock? :p

nooooo
Definitely not

There's a Restricted movie "Cat People" with David Bowie sound track some of you might like. It's older though like 1980.

@Zacharee1 Ed Sheeran's new album came out yesterday ya know.

Q: How to view users logged in since last 5 minutes in linux command line?

user3717722I am fairly new to linux and trying to learn the terminal commands. I want to see the list of users who logged in since last 5 minutes. I searched the internet but almost every place solution uses a shell-script. But I want to see this using just a command. I tried last -t -5min Is it right...

4:32 AM
You know what's super convenient about modern monitors ? Some of them have usb ports. I need one like that , because my usb wire for phone is too short to reach

5:06 AM
I have a bunch of USB extension cables connected to the back of my PC and then the other end hangs on my desk.
Whenever I need to connect a device, the connector is sitting there right in front of me :D
I also have who-knows-how-many micro USB cables sitting around.
I only have one USB-C connector here though.

lol
looks around
I'm at 3 and a converter
no idea they are safe tho

@NathanOsman I've got micro-usb to usb-c converters, because I constantly loose my damn charging wire, so I use spare microusb cables with those converters

@Serg That's what I have :P
I bought two of them when I got my OnePlus 3.

Great likes, think a-mind

5:22 AM
I have this policy. No user in this house should have to walk more than six feet to reach a USB connector :P
They are all over the place.

I like this policy ;p

So I found out USB A male connectors fit tightly in an ethernet port.
The port is right next to the USB connector in the rear of the laptop and it "felt" like I put the cable in the right port. But apparently not.
:P

5:39 AM
@NathanOsman strange
But it also seems you can send requests for another user....

Oh well.

So I may have accidentally sent a few more for your name...

I don't think that sends anything.
I think the number in the URL is the user ID.
I imagine it just uses the API to look up user information.

what's room-15

Top secret

5:47 AM
very interested

Not as cool as:
Way too top secret

still interested

Its a gallery room with a chatbot for access control
meh

@WinEunuuchs2Unix ooops, sorry I was just peeking at my phone in the middle of sleep
but yeah, long time no chat, sorry about that too!

Android app will likely go into private beta Monday or Tuesday.
Unfortunately, the first version in the beta will only do Android => Android transfers.
Android => PC transfers will come in the following week or two since I have to modify the desktop client.

6:33 AM
@NathanOsman well you just got access to the android room

woah

Cool.
I guess I got upset over nothing.
Learns lesson for next time (with any luck).

6:51 AM
@NathanOsman eh, I understand the frustration.

@Seth do mods have a list of tags which were recently roomba'd?
Want to know what this was tagged as: askubuntu.com/questions/243438/…

@muru not that I am aware of.
@muru hah, I was literally just looking at that.

:D

@muru looks like it was tagged to begin with. Is that your question?
or are you thinking Braiam originally retagged it to something else, and that tag was removed?

@Seth no, Braiam changed that, and I don't think he changed the tag to untagged :D
Yes, that.

6:55 AM
well I wouldn't be surprised if he did, but you might be right. untagged did say it was created yesterday so.

I'm guessing something like ip-messenger, and since we have a chain of dupes of length 3, all three could have used that tag

that sounds like a good guess. Anyway I can't find anything in my tools about deleted tags. Probably not tracked.

Ah, well.

what, i got access to android chat? surprising

Is that the SO chat room with a lot of chatter in languages other than English?
I remember reading some met posts about that long ago

Q: Handling questions about the Bay Trail c-state bug

ZannaAs many of you know, there is a long-standing problem with Intel Bay Trail processors. Since a particular patch was merged into the Linux kernel, low power states these CPUs attempt to enter are unsupported, resulting in frequent total freezes. The bug report: Bug 109051 - intel_idle.max_cstate=...

@Fabby and @Mitch - the very first release of NitroShare for Android is finally here. I'll be flipping the switch on the Play Store early Monday morning. The downside is that this first version will only do transfers from Android => Android not Android => PC yet (that is planned for the next week or so). If you are interested in testing this release, I'll need your Gmail email address (you can email it to nathan@quickmediasolutions.com) so that I can add you to the closed testing group.
That also goes for anyone else here who is interested :D

7:34 AM
Cool, Thanks a bunch :)

Q: problems installing tensorflow

T TMy tensorflow installation doesn't work..here is the error that i get root@tobythomas2212:/home/tobythomas2212# python Python 2.7.12 (default, Nov 19 2016, 06:48:10) [GCC 5.4.0 20160609] on linux2 Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. ...

@JacobVlijm article astray in the title of target haha, but +1 to Q&A and voted to close

8:37 AM
@Zanna Thanks :). Do you mean "Unity" in the question?

1 hour later…
9:59 AM
@JacobVlijm no I mean the article "a" askubuntu.com/posts/754903/revisions :) just my silliness

Haha, I get it :) @Zanna

Morning everyone

morning to you (and good $(your time) to everyone else)

Hahahah :)

Good morning everybody ! :)

10:06 AM
@cl-netbox How are you ? :)

@Cyber_Star Fine - thank you ... what about yourself ? :)

Hey all!

@JacobVlijm Good morning Jacob ! :)

Hey cl!

@Zanna Good morning Zanna ! :) Everything superfine ? :)

10:08 AM
@cl-netbox im good :) thanks
Hai Jacob

Hey Cyber!

10:26 AM
morning @cl-netbox yes
how are you?

@Zanna good ! :)

> You've earned the "edit questions and answers" privilege. To learn more visit the help center
Hallelujah!!!
finally
(on U&L)

@Zanna Fine - thank you ! :) Yesterday I purged kernel 4.8.0-24 to which I had upgraded to in the short time frame when it was in the stable repos ... now I'm back on version 39 :)
@Zanna Congratulations Zanna ! :)

Thanks, it's just a relief not to have to "suggest an edit" every time I want to edit something

@Zanna yes ... understandable ... a bit annoying, I can remember this when I started. :)
@Zanna Oh, I see I made a typo ... it was kernel 4.8.0-40 I removed of course :D

11:19 AM
Always interesting conversations in comments, like:

"Do you have a megasync .desktop file in ~/.local/share/applications?"
No
"I am pretty sure you do, please post the output of grep -r 'megasync' ~/.local/share/applications"
Yes I have.

lol

:)
If they answer on comments like this, you can be pretty sure you'll need 10 meter of comments to get to a working answer at all. I am a bad guy, but although I know the answer, I know posting will turn into a mess.
Not doing that.

You have to laugh when the comments are so far from what you ask that you want to cry

11:57 AM
I really don't whant to make a fool of anyone, but this is too nice: There is a megasync.desktop file in ~/.local/share/applications, but grep -r 'megasync' ~/.local/share/applications gives no output. Then the problem is reported to have disappeared. Voted as unclear: askubuntu.com/questions/889599/…

o.O
voted no-repro
but unclear also works :S

@Zanna yeah, I should have done that ^

I feel both are reasonable in this case

12:17 PM
@Zanna yo! Just got that a few days ago on SO (right now I'm an even 2k there)

@muru \o/ I remember you saying you were only 100 away. Congrats :)

It's a slow grind...

I can imagine :S

I hate getting used to a new keyboard. Keep hitting the PrintScreen button instead of backspace. I have about 200 screenshots since the day I brought this

lol >_<
I was using a tiny netbook before this, and every time I used any other machine I was like "why is everything so far away?"

1:50 PM
@Zanna Yay! Nice one!

thanks @terdon ^_^

Oh, crap, I made a typo on a U&L edit (s should be a) anyone for a fix? unix.stackexchange.com/q/349243/95917

I just fixed it haha
before looking here

@Zanna Thanks a lot!!

haha did you do it on purpose to let me use my shiny new power?

1:55 PM
Ah, you know it :) It also stresses the difference of power between you and me :)

That will not last long I'm sure ^_^

Well, I've only posted 3 times there...

you would pass me in days if you spent a little more time no doubt

That is not very likely, I see a rep of 2,035 on 27 answers, which is a pretty high average per A. @Zanna
...Especially since the account is relatively young.

:)

2:05 PM
...But you already knew that :)

hmm no, that felt like a nice compliment, I haven't really thought about that on U&L

@Zanna for SE-wide mod!

lol <3
I suspect this user is creating loads of accounts... saw the exact same question earlier today askubuntu.com/questions/889818/fentesist-cursor

where's the other Q?

erm...
must have been deleted

2:16 PM
They deleted and reposted

Yep, cross-post on Vi was deleted 15 min ago
Note the revision history: askubuntu.com/posts/889692/revisions "Thanks" added and removed, it's like signature move with this troll

user136984
Well I have been off having a fine day volunteering to cleanup local woodland! :)

@jokerdino that too

user136984
2:21 PM
I even bought some litter pickers so that I can continue when I go to the woods normally and it's not a community event.

user136984
But I really can't believe how many washing machines people dumped there...

user136984
I couldn't lift those so a special cleanup team will need to go there from the council providers.

user136984
But I managed to get rid of quite a lot of bottles of opened and unopened beer. :D

user136984
And a packet of used condoms... I'm not even going to start thinking about what that must mean people do in that woods at night...

user136984
Oh dear indeed is all I can say...

user136984
2:29 PM
@cl-netbox: Can you try sending me a message on Gitter by the way.

user136984
I can't seem to send you one there.

washing machines? o_O

user136984
Yes, just dumped there. Half burried in the ground as though somebody didn't want them removed. Some of them even have bricks on them. Maybe they don't want them to blow away in the wind. :P

@ParanoidPanda bears need to practice safe sex too.
@ParanoidPanda keeps them from roaming around seeking vengence

user136984
2:33 PM
@JourneymanGeek: Bears? :D

Bears.
Makes more sense that spaying and neutering them

Pandas need to do more.

user136984
I found lots of beer... But no bears... :D

user136984
Oh, well, except from me I suppose. :D

Otherwise, we won't have enough pandas.

2:34 PM
@ParanoidPanda that's cause they're not breeding like rabbits.

@jokerdino IIRC there's actually a book called "Do We Really Need Pandas?"

@Zanna ever wondered why Panda is Paranoid?

@Zanna Don't leave me hanging.
Btw, whatever happened to that bot that wanted to #OccupyRegulators Room?

@ParanoidPanda Done ! :)

@jokerdino I think there was a meta post, and I cleaned away the trash afterwards

2:38 PM
@jokerdino I think it's about how humans should stop trying to make pandas make babies when they are just not into it

Q: Where should I put CoyoteBot?

Mark YisriRecently I made a fork of WolfBot called CoyoteBot. While I know Kaz asked a similar question here, I want to know what to do about CoyoteBot. terdon did not like it in the General Room or Ubuntu Regulators. Where should I put it? Update: The bot now has a simple AI and can answer questions ...

I think WolfBot was in the room for a short while before it passed out.

user136984
@Nathan: Is @GeorgetheDev still active in any shape or form?

Anyway, looks like we didn't really miss the bot after all.

@muru I think it was while you were away... some folks including jokerdino and myself were doing some cleanup in there, and we ended up moving ourselves to another room because the bot folks kept hassling to be allowed to run their bots in there

2:41 PM
@Zanna were there bots after Coyote?

shortly after we moved, they apparently gave up
before Coyote

Oh
@Zanna three more days before the room freezes again. Post a bunch of bay trails there, please. ;D

@muru with pleasure :D
I'll find some more later
I will try to use the room

You mean, you will try to revive the bots?

2:49 PM
hahahaha I will try to use the room in a completely boring way that nobody will be jealous of

3:00 PM
We're jealous of your superior editing skills before you even create the room :p
When you create the room we'll crash it with crazy slogans like "Zanna, Zanna wanna Banana?"

haha there's nothing superior about my editing skills, it's just that I use them a lot... and Zanna doesn't rhyme with banana but with with spanner as in "Zanna threw a spanner in the works" ie made a mess of things

^^^ Haha you just proved your superior editing skills.... I win :p
...for our American and Canadian Chat Room viewers (NSA & CSIS) spanner = wrench ;)

3:16 PM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix haha where?

@Zanna Where (or when) you said Banana doesn't rhyme with Zanna :)

oh I thought that was just me being pedantic, but since you are determined to be nice I should just say thanks :) xxx

3:38 PM
:) xxx

If anyone sees a duplicate question with "modified by muru" in the active list, but not sign of editing by me, then that's me trying out the new edit dupe target feature

We will be warned :)

3:55 PM
I only edited a couple. I'm holding off on more editing until I can get a response to this:

A: Gold-badge holders and moderators can now edit duplicate links
