Does reopening a post bump it to the top of the front page?
I think it kinda works like that.
Because if there was no edit to a question and it was closed and then reopened, we won't know what happened I guess.
Until you manage to frame a rev history link on your own.
Probably should say "modified by Community" though.

...We could do a test with a volunteer :)

4:32 PM
elementary os user returned now saying.he is using 14.04 askubuntu.com/q/889852/295286
i somehow dont believe them

4:48 PM
@jokerdino yes
Also says "modified by X", X being whoever cast the last vote.
But post re-opening does not get a numbered entry in the revision history, whereas this one does.

I didn't know reopening bumped
that's good...

@Zanna look for the VMWare question around askubuntu.com/questions?page=11&sort=active
The timestamp of the modification is for the re-opening, not for Kaz's edit

Seth principle: "OP will respond back with (half the info requested) / (info given in your comment/answer)"
I've complained about that so much :P

@Seth can we undelete askubuntu.com/questions/887339/… for David's answer

Except I usually want to slap people with a trout instead of cry. But you get the idea.

5:01 PM
trouting is not vegan I guess.

@muru done

Thanks

@jokerdino fair point.

@DavidFoerster re-opened and undeleted: askubuntu.com/questions/887339/…

@muru yeah, let's hope they make it consistent then.

5:02 PM
you're too far ahead, they both just say "yesterday" in DST

Hover on the yesterday

2 seconds difference.

All of the user-friendly timestamps show the actual value when you hover on them

.58 so it's the reopen vote

Hah another thing I didn't notice
<--noob

5:05 PM
Well, at least you noticed that.
;)

hard to miss

Yet being oblivious about the obvious is a common talent.

A: Fentesist cursor

Alex MitI think that the easiest way to do this is by pressing jk which just moves the cursor up and down and allows you to find the cursor position. You can change the cursor color in order to locate it immediately. Also you can type V which highlights the line that the cursor currently is. Hope this...

haha. the answer is "press jk, and no, I'm not kidding!"

@Seth I'm just waiting for him to delete the "thanks" before I flag for bumping

5:10 PM
haha I'd tell them to find it by typing dG

@muru ughdskfj483tr8whd;oijgrjsadf. vim+bumping means he's probably our friend...

Yep.

Hhahaha :p

also, he asked the same question earlier, got an answer, then deleted it? askubuntu.com/questions/889692/fentesist-cursor

troll

5:13 PM
Yep, and cross-posted, got closed, and then deleted on Vi

Q: Is asking "why" on language specifications still considered as "primarily opinion-based" if it can have official answers?

GstestsoI just found this question and answer about why Java uses UTF-16, but now it is closed as primarily opinion-based. I know, a similar issue is discussed here and some people say this type of question usually attracts opinion-based guesses as answers. But I think this case is a bit different, beca...

We should adopt this

Q: pip module not installed in the default Python 3.4 installation of Ubuntu 14.04

pgmankWhy is the pip module not installed in the default Python 3.4 installation of Ubuntu 14.04? In the official docs it says that: pip is the preferred installer program. Starting with Python 3.4, it is included by default with the Python binary installers. In a virtual environment though (u...

People usually ask "why isn't it like this?" here when they mean "how can I make it like this?"
@jokerdino thanks ;)

And for Qs like that, I say: file a bug report! and then they say: no, I want to grow a beard, go to the Himalayas, gain wisdom and know the deeper reasons behind why

OP apparently refereed to Elementary desktop because Elementary uses Pantheon : askubuntu.com/q/889852/295286 Shall we nuke this one and vote to reopen the old one ?
Or is it better to keep the open one and keep the other one closed ?

@muru yes >_< to which we should indeed say, "very nice, go along then" and close the question

as ... POB? Unclear?

5:35 PM
maybe we need a close reason for "too metaphysical"
anyway, I VTC the pip one as unclear
@Serg seems... odd

@Zanna There's really no reason for that question (--^) to have the ubuntu tag either, since you already edited it.

Zanna showing off her editing privileges I see.

@Seth thanks! I usually edit tags with my 10k wand I guess. But I miss many things when editing as standard...
@jokerdino abusing could be more accurate...

What pisses me off about American students is that they complain and argue about privacy and rights, but when it's for school project - oh, sure, we'll just stumble randomly into computer lab, aka public place, and try filming our project , without realizing that other students might not want to have their face on camera

^^^ hehe You are an American complaining that Americans Complain :P

So, in other workds: screw everybody else's freedom unless it's my own
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I am an American, but that doesn't mean I have to put up with hypocrisy of others.

My secret to complaining and getting most people to agree with me is to complain about my own failings :)

Also, o/ hello Fabby

Hello @Fabby our fine-feathered-brussels-born-living-in-Germany-friend! Long time no chat across time zones :)

6:12 PM
:)

I hate it when I find I made a bug and have to dig back through all my answers to fix it. Not only is it embarrassing but time-consuming as well...*sigh*
What's new Fabby? Where have you been hiding?

On a call. This page opened by accident.
Loging out! :P

That's what @Zanna said last night when she opened this page in her sleep.

haha sorry about that

AskUbuntu is like a cursed place - once you come here, you keep coming back :p

idOrderid
idOrderid
Oh . . .wait
blank lines in file. Got it
@steeldriver OP changed requirements: askubuntu.com/a/889889/295286

steeldriver won't get that ping @Serg
better to comment on the answer

@Zanna he doesn't come to chat ?
or doesn't have chat account ?

hasn't been in chat
if you can't tab-complete someone's name, they won't get pinged
I don't know how long it is... 12 hours or something
a mod could ping them, but that seems a bit excessive

6:59 PM
@Zanna been in the room in the last 3 days. Otherwise you can invite them from their chat profile to a certain room, but you can't tie that to a specific message.
@Serg Good thing this site is Ask Ubuntu ;)

@Seth thanks again!
speaking of pings, did you see my comment on the broken image links meta post?
just checking, so you know where it's at...

@Seth sorry, force of a habit

@Zanna yep! I saw it.

I saw this in LQP queue, but it seems to be fine. I gave it an upvote askubuntu.com/questions/889473/…
@Seth great :)

Q: Ubuntu 16.10 akwardly slow at booting up after kali linux and Windows 10 triple boot

Tommaso Thea CioniI had Ubuntu 16.10 and Windows (ubuntu's grub as bootloader) on my laptop, yesterday I decided to install Kali with it too, so I shrank the Windows 10 partition of 60 gb and filled the created space with kali, I installed kali's version of grub. The problem is that Ubuntu's booting screen (the p...

7:14 PM
@ByteCommander @Seth so . . .you guys are both Comp Sci students, right ?

@Serg no I'm in IT. But I have some basic programming experience. Don't know advanced OOP or fancy stuff like algorithms, for example.

@Seth ah, well, my question isn't about OOP or algorithms really. I'm curious if there are things that you as IT/Comp Sci students wish to have on desktop . . .something like utilities for frequent tasks . . .
Just trying to find ideas for new projects

@Serg by desktop do you mean like conky?

@Seth well, by desktop I mean the whole desktop area in general. So wallpaper, unity panels, indicators, stuff like that

@Serg Ah. I like to keep mine as empty and clean as possible, to be honest

7:26 PM
I like uninterrupted wallpaper
but oops, this survey isn't about me hides

I like a Chrome window with lots of tabs, AU General Chat, AU questions, bash searches, etc.

@Zanna define uninterrupted wallpaper plz
@Seth mhmmm, OK
that might be one thing

haha yes I rarely see my desktop, usually there's FF, Telegram and ~5 terminals

The top screen is the TV and I just closed the tv program running there.

btw, does anyone know, off the top of their head, whether there is a dock application (e.g. plank) that supports custom keyboard shortcuts for items on the dock?

7:28 PM
^^^ Bonus question does anyone know what a dock is?

Desperately trying to replicate Unity's super+<number> shortcuts on any other DE.

@Serg I mean I like the desktop to be minimal and clean, just small panels, so mostly I can see the wallpaper
@WinEunuuchs2Unix nice! my monitor is very tiny though

@WinEunuuchs2Unix if you don't know what a dock is you won't know the answer to my question anyway ;p

is @terdon around ?

@Seth Just trying to lighten the mood :p

7:29 PM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix it's where the boats land
and people load and unload them

@Zanna it's a short place where I take long walks and end up wet :p
ie Take a long walk on a short dock used to be famous saying.

that can happen while using your smartphone and walking along at the same time
question is answerable I think... but the current answer is baaaad askubuntu.com/questions/889722/…

@Seth duplicate Elementary OS question with no answer (ie you're not alone): elementaryos.stackexchange.com/questions/9377/…

@WinEunuuchs2Unix that links back here too:

Q: A dock for ubuntu that has keyboard shortcuts for open programs

josinalvoI am looking for a dock application to replace the unity dock. The nice property that unity has is that, once you open an application, you can access it via a keyboard shortcut. (as in the picture) What other dock applications have this same property?

Soo many questions.... so few answers
<<<< happily living in plain-vanilla Ubuntu 16.04 bubble

7:34 PM
I might offer a bounty on that later.

Perks up at bounty bait

@JacobVlijm the U&L question you edited is in HNQs...
aha you answered it too
Should have checked earlier haha

@Zanna can I haz linkz ?

8:01 PM

Yeah, you get one of those one in a while. Somebody posted a couple days ago thanking me as well , lol. Had to delete that as non-answer though

@Zanna WOW, unbelievable :) Haha, should go back to my guests, serving dessert :)

@JacobVlijm :D enjoy!

Thanks! We will :)

@Serg I was posting it in here so we could close it quickly and get it out of sight

9:00 PM
Hello!

Someone can help me with this?

https://askubuntu.com/questions/889926/how-to-integrate-gnome-contacts-with-thunderbird
@zanna
@Zanna, thanks for the edit

no worries... wish I knew the answer

9:32 PM
@muru Thanks and duly noted.
@Zanna Looks like we need "This is a comment on a different post" for questions too…
Does somebody know a terminal emulator that allows text cursor placement via mouse cursor pointing + clicking? (context: askubuntu.com/q/889569/175814)

ught . . . i hate it when my code doesn't work and i don't know why

@DavidFoerster lol

9:48 PM
@Serg Ask the duck!

@DavidFoerster I have. . . .but it didn't help
And i think i found my error
except i don't know how to fix it

Sometimes the API documentation is poorly written or the call simply doesn't behave as intended (by the author).
@Serg Which technologies and libraries are involved? Maybe I happen to have experience with it.

@DavidFoerster Perl

@Serg Ok, I'm out then. I never wrote Perl.

I also need a flag for "unclear what you're answering"

Q: what can a low Rep. user do with an old forgotten duplicate post?

user613307This post is a duplicate of My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it? but has not been marked as so. I could: answer the question & it should get marked Down vote the question & it will be deleted it time Comment to the user to delete the question Flag it for mod...

@DavidFoerster yeah, i will probably have to wait for terdon to show up, because this is slightly above my level

@AskUbuntuMeta how come you found the moderator attention flag but not the should be closed flag?

10:22 PM
Then again you can just click the Close button no?

hmm?
the close button only appears when you get 3k
Not enough people are reviewing close votes these days :/
looking at the stats page, I see 8 people
and it's mostly the same people every day, looking through the history
that's just not enough folks doing it... stuff won't get closed or kicked from the queue unless all of the regular reviewers agree
and see it in time
oh well, bedtime for me
later all xxx

Q: Ubuntu 10.04 reinstall

Robin ShawI know that the real answer is to upgrade to 16.10, but I have been told that I will lose all the emails in evolution. 11:00 PM
@Serg

why are you pinging Serg?

@Seth he's "Russian"

11:15 PM
@Zacharee1 Pretty sure he's Ukrainian.

Hence the quotes

I don't think Ukrainians have much love for Russia, Zach.
But I could be wrong.

It's a joke, Seth

@JacobVlijm @Zacharee1 finally got it working in perl unix.stackexchange.com/a/349364/85039

Got what?

11:21 PM
@Zacharee1 a small script to move a directory up several levels
@Zacharee1 Lol, totally Russians living there. Or maybe americans who are afraid Russia is going to hack them
Ok, now that i have figured that out, i can finally eat

Q: install Stor2rrd

Rifki NurgrahaI'm new to Linux. I need to install Stor2rrd and I'm trying to follow these instructions I'm confused about where I put that sentence in apache2.conf:

someone save this one
would be a lot easier to do the steps with nano for new users I think
or even opening gedit

vi is too complex for new users. Use nano or any other text editor. If you wanna use GUI, use gksu gedit or pkexec geditSerg 9 secs ago
@Mateo think that will suffice ?

that might help

11:48 PM
So, i have spent far too much time on one question
not good
