3:00 PM
I am tempted to star it one more time ;p

Good day all! Does anyone see any value whatsoever in this question? askubuntu.com/questions/881304/…

@ElderGeek good day to you!
It does annoy me when people use AU as a personal blog :(
I voted to close
and gave it a downvote for good measure

@Zanna Thanks for the help! Hope all is well with you and yours! ;-)

@ElderGeek likewise :) <3

@cl-netbox @IanC 6666 - the number of the Byte
Good evening :)

3:14 PM
@ByteCommander hahaha : SUPER ! :D Good afternoon to you ! :)
@Zanna added my close vote @ElderGeek ! :)

You guys are the best. I don't care what anybody says about you. ;-)

:D

@ElderGeek Forgot to say : Hello @ElderGeek have a good day ! :)

@cl-netbox U2! ;-)

@ElderGeek Thanks ! :)

3:20 PM
approx. 1:40h more of classes...
And tonight I practised "sleep is for the weak", but actually I don't feel as dead yet as I expected.

3:38 PM
Death is for heros

hahahaha

@Oli I really feel something is wrong here. Let's see what happened: an answer is posted, which compares itself to the other answer, presenting itself as the "better" answer, because <claim>. The claim, even if it was true, is about nothing, but it simply is not true, and the answer positions itself on incorrect arguments; false information. I ask the poster to remove it, which he doesn't. Now I am positioned as the offender?

Oli
What you refuse to see is "it simply is not true" is itself not true.

@Oli then how do you read this: chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/35322088#35322088, but again, even if it were true, it is about nothing, and in itself no argument, even if it were true.

Oli
Yup. Running over time, yours is more efficient. Changing language, his is faster and more efficient.
He didn't stipulate so you don't get to say "it simply is not true". It is only sometimes not true.
Just as your interpretation is not always true.

3:43 PM
...Then let him write that, and my vote is reversed. But that's not what he writes, not what the average passenger reads.

@JacobVlijm Where is the "smile" ? Can't see it ... didn't you read my message ? :D

@cl-netbox :)

^ see, I can

@Takkat I think I'm not ready for that honor yet...

@JacobVlijm great ! :)
@JacobVlijm But for my "CLMA" (chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/35322996#35322996) I would have expected a somewhat bigger "laugh / smile" like this -> :D :D :D ! :)
@ThomasWard Not ? Then I must have missed your transformation into a "bright shining and super cute" alien spreading love and peace over all of us here ! Sorry for that, I apologize and propose you for being handed out the diamond "KSM (Kindest and Sweetest Moderator) medal of honor" ... this rare badge gets extremely seldom awarded by the highest priest of the SE imperium ! :D :D :D

4:09 PM
@Oli The newly added argumentation, presented as a matter of live and death, makes a silly impression on me, given the fact that it is subjective and with the same silly gravity we can sum up arguments to do the opposite. Nevertheless, kind of thank you.
Note also that the script first changes language and then runs the other commands. There is no noticeable difference in response whatsoever.

Flogging a dead horse (alternatively beating a dead horse, or beating a dead dog in some parts of the Anglophone world) is an idiom that means to continue a particular endeavour is a waste of time as the outcome is already decided. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first recorded use of the expression in its modern sense was by the English politician and orator John Bright, referring to the Reform Act of 1867, which called for more democratic representation in Parliament. Trying to rouse Parliament from its apathy on the issue, he said in a speech, would be like trying to flog a dead...

@JacobVlijm I think the topic should be put aside now ... ore you still so upset that you didn't even notice me saying -> chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/35324773#35324773 ? :)
@terdon :D
Good afternoon terdon ! :)

@terdon any particular meaning with the message? :)

Just let's please stop talking about this. You are sure you're right and don't seem to be willing to listen to arguments, despite the edit you don't seem to feel your vote was wrong and, frankly, the whole thing is a storm in a teacup and I don't see how any good can come of continuing the discussion.
So let's drop it and move on.

@terdon You might have missed the fact that I reverted my vote

4:23 PM
Even better.

@JacobVlijm Thank you Jacob ! Good decision ! :)

@cl-netbox you do know it was actually you who made me, don't you?

@JacobVlijm Thank you very much again Jacob ! :) Very kind of you ! :) Really ! :)

4:56 PM

5:41 PM
Sushi!

Rinzy ! :)
@Rinzwind Bon Apetite ! :)

6:28 PM
@Zacharee1 C'est quoi?

modified Sierpinski

I don't get it...

It looks like a nice piece of inoffensive corporate cafeteria wall art

hi

6:38 PM
@Zanna Guess what I saw and bought in our uni cafeteria today, before holding my power point presentation.

@ByteCommander a beach ball?
@Anwar hi! Great to see you!
@Zacharee1 mmm soothing

@Zanna hi :) same here...but just seen some stuff ... well unexpected...

@Anwar oh? Unexpected in a bad way?
Bbl...

Was following Oli's comment about downvote... so yes...

@Zanna Bad guess. No, they have "Power Point" energy drinks...

6:48 PM
I have absolutely no idea how to read this code so I hope it'll work
my changes, that is
UMMM
well something changed o_O

Oh CSS - why must you fight me at every turn?
I want to space elements apart but noooooooo. That would be too simple.

@NathanOsman try Smali some time ^

What is it?

Decompiled dex
Quasi-Java-Assembly-Frankenstein

I love how macOS puts "Get Info" right next to "Move to Trash".
@Zacharee1 Interesting.

6:57 PM
bye...

I can't really see that I'd have a need for it but...

@NathanOsman what are you trying to do?
even spacing horizontally?

Well, here's the thing.
I want a row of pictures displayed.
I need no more than four photos per line.
Table columns don't wrap, so they're out.
Floated <div>s don't work since they won't have equal height.
CSS Flexbox was supposed to solve this problem but you can't add spacing!
At least, not without some ugly hacks and restructuring.

you're not being very specific. spacing where and what exactly? even? manual?
I thought a flexbox could do even horizontal spacing.

randomly appears

7:07 PM
@Seth Sorry. Spacing between elements. In my example, four photos.

@Zacharee1 As long as the pronunciation isn't xyzzy we are okay.

wat
CAH?
@NathanOsman what about left and right margins or padding?

@NathanOsman justify-content: space-around or space-between doesn't work?

@Zacharee1 That will apply to the left side of the first element.
Unless I use the :first-child selector.

@NathanOsman margin-right?

7:10 PM
@NathanOsman do you have a fiddle or something similar?

@Anwar oh yeah :S cya

@Seth The justify-content property will cause rows with less than four elements to look funny.

lol figured out what went wrong

@ByteCommander lol wth

@Seth Nope, but give me a couple minutes and I'll put one together.

7:12 PM
ahh, conflicting IDs...

@NathanOsman I guess that depends on how you define 'look funny'. What would you rather it do? and have you considered padding it with a blank element? not ideal, but it should work.
or is it smart enough to measure element width? It is, isn't it..

Here it is without any spacing.
If you need the images, jsfiddle.net/9twh6v2d/1
And here's what happens with justify: jsfiddle.net/9twh6v2d/2
I don't know why it does that to the last row.

ahh, you're wrapping.

Well, actually I do know why, I just don't know why they call it "justify".

@NathanOsman but you want it to stack at the left side?

7:18 PM
Yes.
But I don't know how to both do that and still have it space elements apart.

the top row does what you want already or no?

It does, but the bottom row does not.

tried justify-content: flex-start?

It doesn't insert spacing between them then: jsfiddle.net/9twh6v2d/3

maybe it's just the fiddle but I see no difference in the first row's spacing before/after.
ohh, it pads the first row.
how do you make a fiddle go full screen again?

eeeek

Then click the result tab to see it fullscreen.

that's crazy different than the editor view shoes

But the images aren't going to be wide enough in fullscreen.

7:38 PM
what type of value is this 0x7f02068b

hex

thx

o_O

It even converts it for you.
Google isn't able to do that.

7:41 PM
@NathanOsman hm, gotta say I'm out of ideas if you want to use one container. I'd say ask on SO. Now I'm curious.

I have an idea but it requires some server-side cooperation.

@ByteCommander yes it should ;P

@Rinzwind But only if you give it the hint = decimal - DDG is smart enough to guess that on its own.

@ByteCommander no it makes assumptions, and we all know what does end up in :=)

Mostly useful answers?

not mine

Q: Can we stop the agree-whith-me-or-I-call-you-a-nitpicker -style of discussing?

Jacob Vlijm N.B. The example below is not meant personally. I am very well aware Oli's merit is huge, I practically always value his answers on Meta, and his value for the site, I totally acknowledge. It is just the n-th time I seem to run into the same issue. What happened? I post an answer on this qu...

8:10 PM
@JacobVlijm Excuse me if I am missing some point, I have not been around when what you describe has happened (and not in mood of reading transcripts now), but that Meta question reads to me a bit like when somebody in kindergarten squeals about what the other has done. Aren't 4 eyes enough to discuss that problem and find a solution?

The bottom line is this: "consumes less resources" is subjective. We are comparing apples and oranges here. Jacob's solution uses more CPU and disk I/O at the expense of memory. Serg's uses more memory at the expense of CPU and disk I/O. — Nathan Osman 7 secs ago

@ByteCommander You've got a point there.

So what do you expect from that metaQ now? Others to discuss for you and get pissed?
I mean, you're both civilized adult human after all. You should be able to handle that on your own.

As I understand it, there are two problems here - the original topic of discussion (the script) and the way it was later handled.

In my personal experience (which is naturally much shorter than yours yet though), pulling in (a) third person(s) has almost always made things worse if there was a disagreement. The problem at hand might get solved, but it intoxicates the relation.

8:15 PM
The script issue is more black-and-white. See my earlier comment. Neither answer is wrong per-se but each has advantages.
As for how it was handled, well. That's what the meta post is addressing, I assume.

@NathanOsman that's it ^

@JacobVlijm did you mention anywhere that you downvoted Serg's answer?

@NathanOsman yes, to Serg, this morning, after I requested him to change the section.

That was probably not necessary. You can downvote, sure, but specifically mentioning that you downvoted the answer might have made things worse.
Leaving a comment indicating why the answer is wrong should be sufficient.

@NathanOsman you are probably right about that.
@NathanOsman I remember getting downvoted by muru on this one: askubuntu.com/a/551993/72216 I didn't agree with him, but still value his honesty. The style I like.

8:26 PM
Hi Guys! I just added my answer to askubuntu.com/questions/709702/… please take a look and let me know if its OK. Thanks!
BTW a couple of up votes will push me over the 10K rep mark, if you think I am up to it.

8:40 PM
Is it happy Markdown day today?
Such bold. Much italic. Wow.
throws some coffee beans under the bed...

returns with coffee

I was reading those :( these mods making me click another link to read drama

@ArtOfCode :P
you have a blue diamond, you can go read it no matter where it is.
Except if it's in locked-room-on-chat.meta.se :P

Today is National Pizza Day!
\o/
How awesome is that?
Answer: really awesome.

@NathanOsman if you'd said that an hour ago I would've had pizza instead of fish and chips

8:48 PM
xD
@ArtOfCode pizza is still an option

not with that much F&C

@ArtOfCode exactly how much fish and chips did you eat? five baskets of fish and chips?

Now I'm hungry.

"some"

I have leftover pizza in the fridge.
I guess I'll have that for supper.

8:49 PM
@NathanOsman eww buy fresh burn the leftovers
or send me fish&chips

@ThomasWard ಠ_ಠ
There is nothing wrong with leftover pizza.

and some malt vinegar and oregano, to go with the fish&chips.

Especially if you heat the pizza in an actual oven (not a microwave).

@NathanOsman some of us don't have ovens :P
or at least, working onces.

Confession: I eat pizza right out of the fridge.
(I don't reheat it in any way.)
Waits for chat ban...

8:53 PM
nathan, really?

Yes, I know.

i can't condone that

We all do that. (Don't we?)

I eat nearly everything out of the fridge cold - hamburgers, meatballs, soup.
I'm really weird that way.

i know plenty of pizza-eating people and nobody eats it right out of the fridge

8:54 PM
@NathanOsman diamonds can only be nuked by the Great One.

Now you do know such a person :D

his name starts with an S.

Sully the Big Orange Dinosaur?

that is so... bizarre

Yes, indeed.

I don't think I've ever had much to complain about upstart... I'm not expecting to have a lot to complain about systemd either though...
Well.
I wonder if that opinion ever changed :P
Systemd doesn't run daemons, it runs demons :D
3
@Seth ---^

9:10 PM
^ great

If you like that one...
I'd like to take a moment to correct a common mistake — it's not Systemd, it's GNU/Systemd.

9:26 PM
Hello, i have installed lampp and would i could make a symbolic link linux to my working dir in under my home in htdocs but i try load it i get ```Access forbidden!

You don't have permission to access the requested object. It is either read-protected or not readable by the server.

If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.

Error 403```
does it not twork like that or am i missing something
so my thourg was chmod 777 but no luck there

9:55 PM
Hm… Pilot6 isn't here.
Can I still ping him here so he'll get a notification?
or do I need to abuse the comment system for that?^^

@user2842801 Never!
@DavidFoerster If his name does not autocomplete in chat, you can't reach him that way without a diamond-superping.

@user2842801 Please don't use 0777 a.k.a. “please-hack-my-system-and-destroy-my-data” permissions for no apparent reason! There's almost never a reason to to that because it can be avoided with more sensible modifications like changing (group) ownership. See askubuntu.com/questions/20105/… and askubuntu.com/questions/46331/….
@ByteCommander Thanks.
@user2842801 You can't symlink from a web root to objects outside of that directory sub-tree.

Oct 31 '16 at 22:10, by Byte Commander
No, doing chmod 777 is like drinking vodka. First it seems to solve your problem, but you'll soon wake up with a massive headache. @Zacharee1

You can either copy (or hard-link) the files to the web root ,use a bind-mount, or set up a separate web root for the extraneous directory and work with that.

10:14 PM
bind mount works thanks
evil chmod 777 symbolic link gone

@NathanOsman hah
@NathanOsman so did you ever solve your problem and/or ask on SO?

I might just have to embrace the fact that elements have padding on both sides - even on the ends.

10:38 PM
It's just one security issue after another with OnePlus lately xda-developers.com/…
@NathanOsman give the outer ones their own classes?

I can do that with selectors.
(:first-child, etc.)

@NathanOsman you don't want to have a first child...leave that to the crazy ones...

That can only be your sock... :P
(just kidding, no need for orbital weaponry etc...)

@ByteCommander OMG! the word has become a person!

10:52 PM
We should all just give up at life now...
just quit...
cease to exist...

Hi guys! What did I miss?

There is no longer any reason to live

Damn!

@user68186 its okay though, there is no reason to fear death, for one can not fear death if they haven't really lived yet.

@ByteCommander Serg already pointed that out

10:54 PM
Not even for !8.04 LTS!?!

Oh, didn'T notice.
I only saw that you summoned hueness.

hue
it's not like it's my meme or anything

Oh for a minute there, I thought we had a "nubcake" user.

PRAISE THE HUENESS

I'm so going to name my next sock "nubcake".

10:55 PM
@user68186 no, not even for Ubuntu 8.04, it has already been released.

8.04 was my first Ubuntu release.

@TheXed I meant 18.04. The Shift key finger had a tad too much coffee :)

Oh...I took my glasses off for a moment I didn't even see the exclamation point!

Coffee is there to drink, not to bathe fingers... :P

@ByteCommander hey, sometimes your fingers need a bit of a boost too...

10:57 PM
@ByteCommander LOL
I never drink coffee just Earl Grey, hot just as Captain Picard intended.

So...battlefield 3, or GTA IV for this evenings entertainment?
I think BF3
Or RUST....

Here is my shameless promo of my latest answer askubuntu.com/questions/709702/… All up votes are appreciated. Thanks!!!!

nvm. I have no idea what I'm saying lol

@seth I remember 7.04. My first or second version of Ubuntu
@Seth non-volatile memory?

nvm = "nevermind".

11:08 PM
aha! nvm then!!

ibus is making me tear out my hairs

Trying to figure out the nvm in /dev/mvne0n1p1...
@Seth language / keyboard layout problems?

@Serg CSS is making me tear out mine.

@user68186 Non-Volatile Memory Host Controller Interface express, that's what nvme means. And yes, language problems. Chinese doesn't work in 16.04

We are both going to be bald.

11:14 PM
@NathanOsman and we aren't that old to be bald yet o.o

Think positive. You can get a Trump toupee then.

@ByteCommander sudo nope

@Seth I got a weird display problem with Indian languages in Firefox. askubuntu.com/questions/880042/…

(^ cc @Rinzwind Sushi time)

11:16 PM
@Rinzwind you said you like sushi ? that might change after you see it

Some one up voted my answer! Yippie!!!

@NathanOsman Pushing 30 and still have full hair. My dad's in his 50s and it's not receding, just getting slightly thinner and greyer. :-]

I think I'll have to submit a bug report, because libpinyin is just not cooperating

I just started my late 20s and I'm losing hair faster than I can count it.

11:46 PM
That's from using MacIntosh computers.... come over to the good side.
Oh I guess Apple Lisa and Apple MacIntosh came out before you were born :p MacIntosh = "Mac".

OK, I sort of got ibus pinyin to work
Problem is that I now have an ugly tray icon there

^^^ want to upload image of tray icon for comments @Serg?
