@rlemon Yup. This tutorial (for OSX) also suggest using bs=1M in the dd command but I'm not sure it'll make any difference.
seems to be ok
half way into the NetBSD installation on my device.
15:41
@GeorgeEdison Don't forget to file a bug on lp:charm to get your stackmobile thing reviewed.
Can someone tell me what is there in that thread? ( I can't access it)
nothing
Hi Guys
I am currently having problems with the internet and rpc server on my webserver how do I fix this problem?
then a guy asking for details
and then "It still dont work."
well, jorge said it.
15:58
Why does the system allow me to have two files with the same name (upper and lower case variants) but when I attempt to copy them it says I must replace one or skip it.
-rw-rw-r--  1 rdl rdl     323 2011-11-25 08:34 LHARC
-rw-rw-r--  1 rdl rdl   54636 2011-11-25 08:34 lharc
but when I copy the parent directory it thinks they are the same file and wants to overwrite the latter.
Hey :D
@AmithKK hey
@rlemon what filesystem is that?
it comes from QNX POSIX
going to ext2
OMG!what are you doing? :P
oh, netbsd stuff
> ADOBE ABANDONS FLASH ON LINUX
sounds like news from a decade ago
16:08
Moving our embedded control system from QNX to netbsd
I need a flat file blogging system in php
@rlemon Ninja Blog
any particular reasoning for your decision or you just like the name better :P
@rlemon Nope, I like the Design
16:15
well x-nay the design. i'll be shelling it with my own. :P
i wish flatpress's demo worked
16:32
@JorgeCastro hello
OK I think i'll give FlatPress a try. Their demo is down, but the site runs off it and seems much quicker than Ninja Blog
@MarcoCeppi: Can you please merge @Oli 's answer on meta.askubuntu.com/questions/2635/… with meta.askubuntu.com/questions/2008/down-voting-consequences ? coz the answer is just a great suggestion and it shouldn't be forgotten in the [closed] bunch :)

@rlemon Out of passing curiosity: why?
@Oli My host kills me with uber slow dbserver.
anything db driven is unusable.
@nitstorm it won't matter, SE has made it clear voting will be anonymous, and comments are optional
16:41
I have the host for another 9 months... so I'm just trying to find ways to make it usable.
@rlemon just cancel and complain
you'll likely get at least a pro-rated refund
@MarcoCeppi Oh okay... Thanks.
iPage, already complained and they said there was nothing I could do about it. that is the speeds "during peak hours"
i'm only out $47 bucks. i'm not upset or anything.
Oli
Oli
@MarcoCeppi My suggestion sort of deals with that but you're probably right - They'll probably not implement it. Getting new things implemented is like pulling teeth unless SE suggests the change :(
Well, SE tends not to touch certain core values
voting and commenting are two of those core values
16:44
BBT

looks like some guy is using the charms and modifying them for his own deployment (some site called charmz)
it looks awesome, I sent him a mail
@rlemon I wish someone would make a plugin for wordpress
that just took an existing wordpress blog, generated static content, and then automagically s3cmd to an s3 bucket.
@JorgeCastro what do you mean?
basically, be able to have my cake and eat it too
ahh
I don't like cake.
I love Lemon 3.14159265...
17:04
is there a "better" application than shotwell for managing photos? like i replaced audacious with banshee, i'd like to replace "YYYY-MM-DD" folder structures with something more powerful.

@htorque A lot of people swear by Digikam but it's very "KDE-ey". If it would stop crashing for five minutes, I'd be happy with f-spot.
thanks, i've not yet tried any of those. :-)
is there a way to search for all questions with 2 certain tags?
I want to find all questions with "11.10" and "unity"
[11.10][unity]?
oh noooo, a bug reappeared and i didn't pay attention what triggered it... again.
oh, digikam has a face recognition feature! that almost makes me want to install all that KDE stuff that comes with a kde application. :)
17:38
@OctavianDamiean nice logo!
@BrunoPereira check this out.
@StefanoPalazzo: I think there's a problem about what you suggested.
@rlemon I have! Thx man! It really looks nice. I need to make some adjustments for myself (I always tend to use some keys mixed around) but it beats the hell out of having to type those all the time, keep them coming!
don't get too involved in changing it. next version will have a config.
@rlemon I love it already

Bounty offered: How to check if DNS is encrypted? http://askubuntu.com/questions/105366/how-to-check-if-dns-is-encrypted #encryption
I have now upped the anty.
http://askubuntu.com/q/106603/10698
Here's a Unity question for you! :P
I will now free unicorns to whoever votes for me in the logo competition.
@Oli thanks, i think i'll give digikam a chance. :-)

A: How to check if DNS is encrypted?

AlvarYou could check it with Wireshark by listening to your network card, just follow these steps: sudo apt-get install wireshark (paste it into a terminal) start it from a terminal with sudo wireshark (you need to be sudo to be able to listen to your network card.) then start listening and filter o...

A: What is the use of the workspaces?

WilliamWorkspaces serve this purpose for me: When I'm supposed to be working on homework but have other plans in mind, I keep my homework on the first workspace and my play on the second. Then, when parent comes by, Quick! Ctrl + Alt + Left Arrow! Wow, William, you've made great progress! Keep up the go...

@Alvar no questions in comments dude, you know better than that
just ask "How do I put xkill in the launcher?"
@JorgeCastro I thought that would be a good way to improve your answer
+1 for "you know better then that"
I answered the question you asked, if you want just rephrase your question
@GeorgeEdison Any chance of a Stack Alert Safari extension?
18:17
@JorgeCastro asking a new one then.
@William Unfortunately no - Safari is too unstable on Windows 8.
GEORGE.
is stackmobile ready yo?

Q: How can I add xkill in the Unity launcher?

AlvarI would like to add the command xkill to the Unity launcher so I can just click on it to kill a program. How can I do that?

go jorge go!
:P
@GeorgeEdison Doh.
Safari Extensions are the only programs I can use on my school account.
@GeorgeEdison How does safari fare in wine?
I would have liked to release one but Safari crashed too often.
@William It's not much better I'm afraid.
18:23
OK.
You don't have a PC you could try it on?
And what about Windows 8 compatibility mode?
18:40
@GeorgeEdison two questions about stackapplet: 1. why do i need to authenticate after every start? 2. what's the polling frequency? i got a rep change and the mail icon stayed yellow during the 15 minutes i waited.
is curious about how well the face detection feature of digikam works
i hope it's intelligent enough to guess the names and properly tags all images :D
@Cas Ping me next time you are around please!
18:52
@htorque Hmmm...
The auth every time you start is a bug.
I haven't programmed the icon to change color yet.
oh, so it's only a popup? haven't watched the screen the whole time
i'll test it again then. :)
@JorgeCastro think a better answer should be given on the roll back Ubuntu question (I am going to favor the last link you gave). There is already a very good answer there, maybe make it wiki and give some rep to the user?
@htorque It's okay - I was really just wanting to make sure it started without error.

Q: Remove notifications icon or make notifications fade after a while

ADCoonJust installed Ubuntu 11.10, along with Gnome 3 to replace Unity. I'm using the classic Gnome look rather than the new one which is way too much like Unity for my tastes. Seems like everything is getting harder and harder to configure, fewer and fewer options. It's driving me nuts. Anyway, on oc...

@BrunoPereira I'd be happy to bounty up whichever one you think should be the right one
19:04
@JorgeCastro Dont worry about it, I will be also happy to do so. I am just wondering if the answer from Oli is good enough as a start point.
@JorgeCastro I left an answer on meta, if we agree and Oli does not mind (as I am sure he does not) we will make his answer wiki and start working on it a bit more, its the only answer that just goes to the point.
@William ROFL
@GeorgeEdison weee, i now got notified about your chat message from 20min ago, so that works
19:32
can someone tell me how slow this is for them rlemon.com/blog
for me this is a much improvement from wordpress on the same host.
It's quite fast - loads quickly.
so clean, -1!
19:36
i know what it looks like.. i wanna know how quickly pages load and transition.
my host is uber slow.. i'm trying everything to get a working blog - so i've done away with db driven blogs and am trying flatpress.
other than some bugs in the blog software it seems to be ok.
I showed this to someone last night but...
Thoughts?
Note that the pages for individual apps isn't up yet.
@rlemon it comes direct, it's fast
@GeorgeEdison new webdesign?
Yup. Is it better than this?
(That's the current home page.)
ohh yea i like this one better.
only issue i see so far is when i resize and you change the top bar to the mobile looking topbar.
there is a gap above it.
QA'ing your design
19:43
I noticed that... it's strange.
I'll make sure that is fixed before deploying it.
Thanks for the screenshots. I think some faulty CSS is to blame.
are you using a grid system?
960 or whatever?
I'm using the hero unit for the first app and 4-unit columns for each row after.
I'm using the responsive (fluid) grid whatever-it's-called.
yea those responsive css are wonky some times (I know they work.. just never for me :<)
19:49
I'm at war with SQL at the moment.
Good Luck!
Trying to write a "LEFT JOIN" clause and failing.
and the design looks slick, defiantly an improvement.
need any help?>
I think I'm okay at the moment, thank you.
20:07
@GeorgeEdison sorry I keep pinging you and then getting distracted, did you need a review for StackMobile?
No, not yet thanks.
It's not quite finished yet.
@Alvar thankx
@OneZero no problem, just glad it worked, been doing some work in wireshark in school, good to know that it can be useful too! :)
@Alvar ya , i cool & thanks alot , cant award the bounty , i have to w8 19 more hours
@OneZero do it when you have the time then :) or just wait it will be awarded in a week or so anyway
20:14

Q: Ubuntu to get better with Upgrades?

bmazokaSo far with using Ubuntu I have noticed every time a new version comes out that i am forced to do a clean install because of random problems that occur. Will Ubuntu begin making it a little better for users to upgrade without a clean install? I know this is a little hard to answer since alot of ...

FAIL
That would be like me showing up at a BSG convention in my Brent Spiner (Data from TNG) costume
smile
I am convinced that most bad upgrades are hardware related
ie. you got lucky with your broadcom card one release and then failed the saving throw the next release
that and bad advice on the internet, but we can fix that part.
20:41
That and people doing a lot of crazy "customizations"
OMG I CAN MAKE MY BOOTSPLASH HIGH RESOLUTION!
2
I did a talk on that very thing!
Any problems I might have had till now are graphic drivers faults, had I removed the driver before the upgrade all would be good.
but users consider failed upgrades anything now a days: "I installed 11.10 and now I cannot use my old GNOME classic desktop, will use 11.04 until you decide to drop Unity!"
-.-
I imagine that Ubuntu will be dropping Unity any day now...
you can't help everyone.
but this will require a FFE :D
@ajmitch over my dead body. makes not sense what so ever.
20:48
@BrunoPereira I fixed the most annoying of my suspend/resume problems by switching to the free radeon driver, you know ;)
i have used windows more then 12 years the only one thing they got is driver work properly & easy to install
I still have bad memories of installing drivers on windows 9x
the only crashes (STOP whatever bluescreens) i remember were caused by nvidia drivers
it's always graphics drivers...
after 10 more years windows will be gone
only & only linux
if evolution works, yes... :D
20:53
@htorque I have some years of windows tech support in the past, I have seen BSOD over anything
typed too fast → bluescreen. typed too slow → bluescreen. typed → bluescreen. :D
i have done MCSE & MCITP but after seeing ubuntu all are lost no windows now
> Richards' Laws of Data Security: 1. Don't buy a computer. 2. If you must buy a computer, don't turn it on.
it's not like linux is immune to bad drivers
@htorque lol
20:55
smile
@ajmitch but at least the very bad ones are locked away in staging
@htorque right, like with windows, most of the bad drivers are 3rd party :)
Can you answer this? How to make the disk utility ask for password before making modifications? http://askubuntu.com/questions/36663/how-to-make-the-disk-utility-ask-for-password-before-making-modifications #diskmanagement

ALT+TAB menu should always appear on the same display!!
I don't care that my mouse focus is still in the terminal in my right side display - my main display should always show the ALT+TAB menu
maybe you're just holding it wrong? :P
what ALT+TAB?
nevermind ;)
I tried with my thumb and index finger... maybe i'll go grab a few pens, some rubber bands, and a book.

Q: How can I make ALT+TAB cycle through the windows on the display the mouse pointer is in?

Robin GreenI'm using KDE with a dual-head display setup, and I find it irritating that ALT+TAB cycles between windows on both displays (indeed, switching to a window on the other display may cause nothing to happen, because that window was already at the front on the other display). What I would like to hap...

Can someone tell me whether or not my comment warrents a new question.
GNOME/Unity alt tab menu displays on the monitor your mouse is in.
I want it to be on primary display ONLY or BOTH ALWAYS
21:40
probably
ok, i'll create it once I get home.
its annoying because my other display is MUCH smaller than my primary
I only use it for testing webpages at lower resolution and my terminal lives there.
but being that my terminal lives there i'm constantly in it.
what is nice though about this setup is each workspace now has it's own open terminal.
21:54
@OneZero FYI, your profile says "Married , 2 wife's , One is Ubuntu & 2nd one don't like Ubuntu" but should say "Married, 2 wives, One is Ubuntu & 2nd one don't like Ubuntu" I will ignore the rest of the mistakes as it sounds better when read aloud.

Q: Is it possible to create Ubuntu Shirts ( Merchandise )

Luis AlvaradoI wish to create a couple of Ubuntu shirts as prize for a coming event. In my country it is very difficult to get dollars($), Euros or any coin. This is the reason for making them here instead of buying them from the store. Will there be any problem in making them. Some of them will be similar to...

@rlemon that sounds like a bug
@rlemon you comment should be an answer if you find more information on that
Oli
Oli
@rlemon Things like usually happens because of the way votes and scores are denormalised (to keep the system awesome). I'll perform a recalc on your account to get you an accurate score (note: it may go down!)
@Oli i don't care. I got a badge for it.
Oli
Oli
Yup. You lost 1 point.
@BrunoPereira Thanks! :)
23:03
I'm just saying, should Undoing a vote not give you back that vote to give out later in the day.
Oli
Oli
@rlemon Oh I see! I thought you were talking about getting the rep back!
you can initiate a recalc yourself too
it's not my reputation
it's my vote limit
i.e I can only vote 40 times a day.. if I vote 10 times and undo all ten should I have 40 left, 30 left (original 10 still gone), or 20 left (10 votes, and 10 unvotes that somehow count as a vote)
oh, no idea there
right now #1 defiantly doesn't happen.. it is one of two or three.
tomorrow I will check, then post a bug on meta.
needs to have the right facts

@rlemon Oh. Oh they're going to be lurking in your terminal emulator's configuration. Can you tell the coffee is wearing off?

@rlemon @Oli I also cannot find where those are hidden, probably a weird gconf key somewhere in a outer world
