@KazWolfe congrats
also, god ,my lungs feel like carp. This flu is annoying
and now i get to browse Ask Ubuntu (see, @Seth?) professionally.
I'm going to end up having some time between tickets.
00:31
Oh no.... Russia Today is just telling me Canada is selling arms to Saudi Arabia.... If only there was a way to protest this and let Canadians know what's going on. A 15 billion dollar deal.
I know I'll tell @NathanOsman and he'll do the heavy lifting ^^^
00:45
What should we do with this ? askubuntu.com/q/876285/295286 bash question, but op uses kali
DOW Jones went over 20k today...interesting.
@Serg edit the question and take Kali out of the equation.
@ThomasWard thx
OH I see they have a screenshot though that gives them away. Ask them to repost the text with errors instead?
01:06
pls cv
fecked I am, fecked I tell ye
calculus is a bish
@CristianaNicolae if you're hunting the Archaeologist badge, at least don't add mistakes to posts: meta.askubuntu.com/posts/1609/revisions
01:12
@muru she's Romanian. Looks like an honest conjugation mistake
@ThomasWard or @Seth, could you guys nuke the duplicate posts by this idiot chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/35016202#35016202 ? (not Zach, the user to whom he linked )
PS: Zach is a bae, muah
@Zacharee1 maybe, but when I visit meta in the morning to see 5-6 posts edited by the same user, most of them old, I tend to be less forgiving
hmm
I think she's just taking a cue from @Zanna
good evening
I've noticed we've been doing a lot more moderation since she became active
01:15
maybe
but I guess let's wait and see?
@Serg crepe
Literally, crepes
nutella crepes are the best
01:20
plsss
Hey @Zanna, your moderator score is 38/40. If you plan on running in the next mod election, you just need to offer up a bounty on a question and be active for 3 more months for a perfect score.
@Zanna please do run in the next election. You'd make a great moderator. (obligatory "@Zanna is awesome")
yeah, if you actually run, you're basically guaranteed the position, I'd daresay.
01:23
_^_
@Zanna Mod 2017! I think you would be a great mod Zanna :)
Well guys I'm going to make a pitch to the president tomorrow to move out of the warehouse and into software. Wish me luck.
@Serg nuked zach
uwotm8
I agree @Zanna would be a great mod! :)
@WinEunuuchs2Unix good luck man! Hope it works out!
she's gonna wake up to so many notifications lol
01:30
this is why I turn off my phone at night
@Zanna here's another notification to you for no reason at all other than you're awesome
7
notifications from SE, Imgur, Discord, Skype and pretty much everything except my email app don't work on my phone, so I can leave mine on
@IanC Thanks Ian, with the pay raise I could vacation in Brazil instead of a night out at McDonalds across the street ;)
@Serg Some peeps at work call each other "awesome" all the time... I think I missed the memo on this trend :(
@WinEunuuchs2Unix hahaha, that would be cool!
@Zacharee1 After Lollipop update one annoying notification is "battery is full" but the notification causes battery to lower which generates another notification later.... very annoying!
01:34
Well, this might be a trend , but I'm looooong way from being awesome. Especially in calc stuff
FML
@WinEunuuchs2Unix lol you have a terrible charger
Math is Hard
@Serg "you deserved it"
calc as in calculous?..... I think your answers in AU are great.
01:35
@JourneymanGeek it is :(
They are so well written you could be an English Major right up there with @Zanna.
what does English have to do with calculus
don't rain on my compliment to Serg :p
English was difficult for me... Math 31 (Calculus) was difficult for me. Therefore they are equivalent in a warped sense ;)
Physics, Electrical and Computers were my comfort zones.
hue
Calc was bad but physics was fine?
Calculus had funny symbols and letters to represent alternate realities (to me) but Physics had real life examples (to me).
I guess knowledge is in the mind of the beholder? hard to explain sorry.
For example I could never think like a woman but they look at me as if I'm stupid when I can't think like them.
01:42
I was thinking about judging a fish by its ability to climb a tree
Well, if you strap raspberry pi to the fish, and let rpi drive robotic hands with hooks . . . it might just work
If you think about it flies are superior to humans because they can fly.
Until they meet a human with a fly swatter :p
BTW a "fly" was the creator of the first "computer bug" when it flew into the circuitry. In case you didn't know.
Wasn't that a beetle ?
artistic license or too much beer or too many years since school... I'll google it. hang on.
We're both wrong it was a moth.
Interestingly the Mother of Computing (Navy's Grace Hopper creator of COBOL) wrote the story.
Hi Nathan how is Abbotsford tonight @NathanOsman
You know my birth certificate says I was born in Vancouver :)
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I'm not in Abbotsford. I just happened to be passing through yesterday when you were talking to me.
01:49
OH rats. Sorry about that.
Langley?
Richmond?
Burnaby?
Port Coquitlam?
Guys I'm tired of looking at this in the shadows
Keep guessing...
Oh I was right, Russia Today is saying Ritilan is bad for little kids.
lol
jajaja @NathanOsman This is paid
That's sure
I used to get 4 hours out of this system
01:52
Well I want to guess Gibsons Landing because the Beachcombers was filmed there but that is too out of the way on the "Sunshine Coast" (acronym you know right?)
in battery
The battery is OK
I was actually there a few months ago.
But no, not where I live.
Tracker get to work when I unplug the computer and stop when I get the same ammount of time as in the Windows experience
Well you already told me across the river from Maple Ridge I simply forget.
Surrey.
01:53
Well I'm erasing the tracker file
I went to grade two in maple ridge (thornhill / haney).
Surrey you jest :p
King George V is in Surrey?
I'm fairly close to the King George SkyTrain station.
@NathanOsman I kept gessing and got around this with Synaptic
Next time I'm there I'm going to ride the Sky Train. Never have but I should have in the many trips.
01:56
Same with Calgary next time there I'll ride the C-Train. And next time I'm in Montreal I'll ride the subway.
Hey Xed! Hows the I-7, 7700 seventh generation CPU tonight?
@NathanOsman and @TheXed I wrote a draft email tonight to the president to move out of the warehouse receiving department into the software department. It only took me 6 months :p
I'm a little nervous though. What will they think? Something like "Whoaa.... that guy used to be a software developer?"
wtf
What me to take a look at it? @WinEunuuchs2Unix?
@TheXed It wouldn't make much sense to you because it involves details about work that only the NSA and CSIS knows about.
Besides there is no email system in AU.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix that is okay, I can lie, and tell you it looks good anyways :-P
The hard part is explaining how a warehouse receiver with 10 years of experience has 20 years of software development experience.
That's like explaining how a hardened jail house criminal is really a judge in disguise.
can i have a mod (@NathanOsman ??) clear my user cache on chat? ty
02:11
Oh crap... can you delete everything I've typed too please :)
time and time again, i gotta wonder : how much did i screw myself over by going into electrical engineering?
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Nothing's ever deleted on Stack Exchange. We can all see everything.
@KazWolfe They blame me for your hiatus I think... when I talked about "he who shall not be named".
@WinEunuuchs2Unix No, that was my own fault. I was immature and rage-y over other things and I made a bad decision.
But, that's over. And not going to happen again.
@KazWolfe not sure if I can do that on mobile.
02:13
@NathanOsman If not, don't worry about it. It's not a big deal. Just a convenience if possible.
@KazWolfe I always said you would be back when you were gone. Some people at work (here in Canada) are now saying they are "he who shall not be named" supporters when at first they were silent two weeks ago.
Cache was cleared, whoever did it, thank you.
@NathanOsman Mobile sucks. It took me 3 months to find the back tick for block code formatting.
@Serg I find a bit of comfort in the fact that wondering much about "what if"s is a bit of a thoughtless thinking, considering how chaotic every experience we have is. Maybe electrical engineering was a bad decision, but a good one in the big picture
I'm not sure you get what I mean by that
@Serg my two cents. I wanted to take Electrical Engineering at University of Alberta but didn't have enough money to get in to four year degree. So I opted for 2 years at at NAIT for Computer Systems Technology instead. I finished with honours in 3rd place (out of 160 (kind of gives myself away)) but I still regret I didn't have the money for an EE degree and only ended up with a college diploma instead. There are certain bragging rights you will have with an EE degree.
As long as your parents are willing to support you I say "Go for it".
I had no support.
They say even if you have a university degree in Bachelor of Arts you will do better in life... wealthier, happier, etc.
02:28

bullcrap
I have a dual major. I still have trouble getting work ><

@JourneymanGeek come to Discord

@Zacharee1 is it web based?
@TheXed used compressed air on fan vents and now temps are down to 55C: askubuntu.com/questions/391474/stop-cpu-from-overheating/…
I don't want to install yet another chat app.
@JourneymanGeek it can be
but it's also an app if you change your mind
discordapp.com
02:30
@JourneymanGeek I read your complaints the other day and wanted to say something then but did not. I wish I could remember what I wanted to tell you then.
lol
@WinEunuuchs2Unix oh, most of the worst stuff dosen't come on here ;p
shrug
I just broadened my scope to support jobs again
A good welder, a good carpenter or a good plumber makes 100K+ a year.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix not here
where is here?
And well, this is my trade
Singapore
Its not about "its a good, well paying job"
02:32
Don't chew bubble gum or you will get cained.
caned*
Its kinda like how you can't pay a master carpenter 3.50, and tell him to be a plumber.
You can make more money buying products from pollution burned areas.
If you want to get rich in Singapore be a Value Added Reseller... don't be a programmer.
From the little I know about Singapore that is.
An uncle or close male mentor would give better advice.
lol
I want to be a sysadmin ._.
I had a company contact me about a training + placement thing
then claim the client didn't respond
system administrator is a role I rejected in 1989 and quit my job... I didn't want to be a caretaker I wanted to continue creation.
Why would a company contact you about training + placement. Were you hooked up with a head hunter?
vaguely
shrug
The IT support industry is basically mostly outsourced contracting, and the companies arn't very... trustworthy
02:38
I don't know your education background. But if you can find one person with a computer problem and fix it then they tell a friend and you get more business.
The same company turned around and offered me a sysop role at shitty pay.
ahhh the prison angle.
(and well, I basically was not happy at the bait and switch)
anyway
That company burnt its bridges with me
I'm kind of guilty using bait and switch with international politics, but the global leaders are well paid and I have no qualms with the methods.
"That company" is irrelevant when you have 400 clients.
Just a little blip on the radar.
Become an expert in a niche market and you will be successful and happy.
These aren't my personal ideas, they taught it in college and it really does work until you marry a vampire.
@Zacharee1 check discord ^^
02:46
@Videonauth good to see you again... I've been meaning to tell you for the last week that I'm kind of a recluse.
huh ?
how so ?
It's kind of hard to explain.
Being reclusive is like keeping things to yourself and not sharing with others.
well i have been like that al lot so dont worry :)
I've been like that for 48 years... I have a head start!
yes about 4 years ;) headstart
02:49
I wasn't worried so much... I just wanted to let you know other people understand and you aren't alone.
well everyone has his package to carry i guess :)
The females call it "baggage"... haven't totally figured out what they mean yet but I have been thinking about that since 2000.
I gave up on understanding women, well i still try but the efford seems futile to me :D
But oh well if I could think like a woman I would change my name to Chelsea I guess.
i guess if i had another 100-500 years to live i might make it that far
02:53
What if half of what women said was them pretending to think like a man? wouldn't that be a trip?
but who knows maybe they find something which alows th in my lifetime
o/ nathan
wb @NathanOsman
That was a good dinner.
Mine is in the microwave, what did you have?
Fish and chips.
02:55
Intel Core i7 - i7-6850K - 3.6 GHz - 15 MB Cache - LGA2011
Asus X99-A II Mainboard
Corsair CW-9060027-WW Hydro Series water cooler
Corsair CMK32GX4M2B3000C15 Vengeance LPX 32GB (2x16GB) 2.0
I'll put that on my shopping list, thanks for suggestion.
im currently dreaming of :)
haha 15 mb cache.... and how does that change the price of tea in China?
i don't know and i don't care either
that could possible be my next machine tho
My CPU utilization is 8% just now.... hard to imagine what a faster i-7 core or more than the 3 levels of cache I have now will do for me :)
02:58
well thats a 6 core prozessor
this would finally would allow me to run poper VM's
having plenty of ram and 2 cores for the host
My phone has an 8 core processor but I still don't know Lollipop OS expertly. My laptop typing on now is 4 core, hyper so 8 CPUs and the only problem I have is running too hot at times. I haven't run VM yet and only do nVidia games under Windows.
Can anyone recommend a good movie to watch?
the best one i have seen lately was the last witch hunter with vin diesel
Thanks I just loaded it
he is anyways one of my favorite movie actors
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Lollipop is the version. Android is the OS.
03:04
@Seth Um I kind of knew that Seth. I just write stupid things some times.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix :D
@Seth You wanna make @Zanna a mod? We were talking about that 3 hours ago.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix I don't have that power.
I'm sure you could put in a good word ;)
@WinEunuuchs2Unix Moderators are elected, no words I speak can make anyone a moderator ;)
Other then, maybe, a comment under a nomination.
03:08
You have to agree she's a hard worker bee. Other than you challenging her on the audit review being too quick and lifting her ban I can't think of any mistake she's made other than deleting that other answer. Lord knows I've done much worse.
I don't have anything negative to say about her :)
I hope I didn't sound negative... I put @Zanna right up there with Grace Hopper.
03:23
@WinEunuuchs2Unix nice...that is what my temps are under load :-P
@TheXed I guess "under load" is all relative. Right now my CPUs are 7-8%. But I'm doing everything I want to do.
@WinEunuuchs2Unix well okay admittedly when I am playing Crysis my CPU is only at 14% usage...
that are cpu loads i dream of :) right now just with running firefox and discord my cpus are all at about 30-40%
about 6% with Edge and the Xbox app open plus background apps
@Videonauth On my Toshiba Dual Core Centrino life was like that.
03:27
:)
@TheXed Um you are saying your Intel I-7 7700 seventh generation runs x-box translator?
Well maybe but I am talking about the windows 10 xbox app
My Sony TV and Sony Bluray player both have Playstation 3 processors built in, I guess it makes sense Windows 10 has X-Box built in.
I use it for game DVR...that is about it...
So you are saying Windows 10 doesn't pay X-Box games but records games played on the X-Box 360 or X-Box One?
03:36
@WinEunuuchs2Unix you can stream x-box one games to your Windows 10 pc (not sure about xbox 360)
You record your PC games with the Game DVR...
I don't know if you can record xbox games that you are streaming...
I don't have an xbox or xbox one....
03:47
About to fail over @StackOverflow's database backend in a few minutes. The user-facing outage should be under a minute.
All done, @StackOverflow is back online. The rest of the maintenance will be behind the scenes. Carry on!
Guys.
Take a look at Trump DBA (@TrumpDBA): twitter.com/TrumpDBA?s=09
This is hilarious.
Even the bio is hilarious.
"parity account" LOL
@Seth Well, a comment from an active mod goes a long way, I'd guess.
04:23
I've just signed an executive order eliminating foreign keys from databases forever. Use AMERICAN KEYS instead! ACTION!
(I mean, I don't know about other people but I'd give far heavier consideration to a user that got a public endorsement from a moderator)
What you really need is @NathanOsman's endorsement.
Any time Nathan endorses someone they get elected :p
@Seth nathan has a habit for picking good people, I'd guess. Or he just has a good eye. Still, sitemod endorsements (especially for multiple ones) would make a huge difference, I'd guess.
04:46
@KazWolfe or shooting down a nomination, done right.
lol I don't know why but I just bought this keyboard...amazon.com/dp/B01ELGLOOY/…
oh well it will match my fans...
05:02
@JourneymanGeek Well, hopefully mods won't do that without good reason, and will contact the nominee first to discuss why it's not a good idea.
05:24
@KazWolfe eh not really
@JourneymanGeek (I did say hopefully. Reality and what should be done are oft very separate.)
@KazWolfe well, a mod's real power's mostly in terms of influence IMO
Yes, leading by an example of grace and civility.
So its a matter going "Hey, this guy's done a ton of meta moderation" or "this guy has a been troublesome in the past"
Of course, dosen't always work
One of the mods elsewhere had issues with mods on another site
and he's a fine mod where he is
yeah, well, not always perfect.
and has some issues, unfortunately. oh well.

@muru Hi! Sorry, I'm not hunting for anything. (I just got carried away and done some small edits before going to sleep.) In fact, I not even very active on Meta. I simply forget to log in there. :-) Sorry for the mistake. I seem to have a problem with "worth". It's not the first time.

would anyone care to look at askubuntu.com/questions/831890/… ?
I don't know if it's spam or not. I guess I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt, but it should still be removed: I've downvoted it, flagged it as very low quality, and voted to delete it.
This (unrelated post) has been edited (not by the OP) to have a title about the hosts file, but I am not sure the OP is really trying to ask about that. It seems unclear to me, but some commenters seem to think they know what is being asked for. Does it seem clear to anyone here?

Q: How to edit the `/etc/hosts` file

MateiI've just installed Ubuntu on my laptop and I need some help with something. I want to configure the file host of my laptop so that a web page that I want will have the IP address 10.100.20.200.

11:20
@EliahKagan Yeah, I edited again. Mind you, that is almost certainly what the OP wants, but the question isn't just how to edit /etc/hosts but how to make a hostname resolve to a specific IP.
Hello and good morning everybody ! :)
Good morning!
Good morning Eliah ! :)
12:01
good morning :)
12:13
Whoa, that's definitely the worst German accent I've ever seen in a written post askubuntu.com/questions/876159/c-hotkeys-without-windows-focus
(and off-topic, 1 more VTC please)
@ByteCommander Done ! :) Good morning ! :)
Good morning.
You're still green - or again.
@cl-netbox Can you post some consecutive messages please? I want to check what happens when the icons fade big...
@ByteCommander okay :)
Just have to finish an edit ...
The question I just answerd ...
The question about how to backup ...
edit finished ...
here is the question ...

Q: Backups tool does not show the hard drive

user3235916I am trying to back up my Ubuntu partition using the Backups app to an external USB hard drive. I have formatted the drive (NTFS) and mounted it to /media. I can access the mounted drive and write and read to and from it using the file browser and from terminal. However, it doesn't show up and o...

Good answer @ByteCommander ?
@ByteCommander Enough consecutive messages now ? :)
Yes.
Once the icons grows big, it turns blue.
The green default icon only shows for the small size that you get on single(double/triple?)-line messages
/shrug
12:29
@ByteCommander okay ... :) What about my answer ... not good ? ;P
Looks good :)
Heading for my train, BBL
@ByteCommander Thank you ! :)
@ByteCommander See you later ! :)
hola :)
@Videonauth aloh :)
What do we flag this as? askubuntu.com/a/876458/158442
12:38
Looks like NAA to me
@Videonauth what ? my answer not an answer ? :D :D :D
its more a question posted as an answer @muru
@cl-netbox check the link muru provided
this will put it into context what i just wrote
@Videonauth ah okay ... yes that's not an answer ... I thought you meant my one to the backup question linked above ... :) How are you doing today ? :)
did you see your GHO?
@Videonauth yes ... 3D print ... :)
12:45
yep a real nice field i think
@Videonauth maybe yes ... have to go now ... lunch ... BBL ... :)
@Videonauth it's a copy of the question mostly
it still is NAA
^^
It is asking a question.
Well, was.
Not even, just a copy.
In ages past we could have flagged such simple copies as abusing the system
Such a pity that's not possible now
13:08
NAA is fine. That isn't an answer and that's all that's needed.
13:25
@KazWolfe Not happening on any other devices on the network? Which devices have you tried?
Do we close this question now?
Nevermind. I did it — Matei 48 mins ago
Normally I'd suggest that an OP post their solution as an answer, but in this case they don't seem to have been very interested in providing additional information. Also, it would turn out to be a duplicate.
13:47
It only needs one more close vote. I think it will be closed soon.
@terdon I've done that for you @EliahKagan ! :)
Hi @all!
@DavidFoerster Hi David ! :) Good afternoon ! :)
Who of you is going around upvoting all my answers right now?^^ askubuntu.com/users/175814/david-foerster?tab=reputation
13:55
(Unrelated to the above.) Is this an answer? It seems to be trying to answer the opposite question -- the OP asked why an extra kernel was kept, and this seems to be answering the non-asked question of how an extra kernel could have been deleted.
0
A: How does 'apt' decide how many old kernels to keep?

Janapt-get only removes or purges something if you tell it to. Maybe you have usedapt-get purge or apt-get remove to delete the other version. Another possibility is that some other package has a hard dependency on 3.13.0-52...

@DavidFoerster Looks like serial voting ... you should ask @terdon to have a look at this ... :)
@DavidFoerster Hopefully, a whole bunch of separate people!
@cl-netbox Not much the mods can do about that. If it was indeed serial voting, the automatic scripts will catch it.
