(How) can we encourage question askers to do some research of their own? http://meta.askubuntu.com/questions/2607/how-can-we-encourage-question-askers-to-do-some-research-of-their-own
00:38
Anyone have any feedback on my submission?
It seems to have really quieted down in here.
What's that?
keyboard commands for the chat to format your text.
Tag Input
Link Input
Image Input
Text Formatting (Italics, Bold, Strike-through)
Code Formatting
all with hotkeys.
00:40
So if I enter "test", select it, and press Ctrl+B - it will prepend and append '**' ?
yup
right now all that works is tags, and almost links.
then on to images, the text formatting, then code formatting.
If you are interested, please give this a try when you list it on Stack Apps.
:)
ohh your auto submit.
I planned on it. just haven't had anything to submit yet. ;)
00:42
I'm eager to hear how it works.
version one will not include configurable keys.. but version 1.1 will :P
01:00
@JorgeCastro: Ah, just the person I was looking for.
I'm worried I've made a mess of StackApplet's translations on Launchpad.
It says trunk and 1.4 series are translate-able.
How do I make them un-translate-able?
(If "un-translate-able" is even a word.)
I have no clue about translations
but I can ask David to check out a question if you post it
01:01
It's okay.
I managed to figure most of it out now.
I just wondered about those two series.
Actually, David (I assume you are referring to David Planella) has just provided some new translations for StackApplet.
if anyone cares to test it... Chat Easy Input Tools (was used to make this link ;P)
bug:P
currently only ALT + A and ALT + T work. (insert Link and insert Tag respectively)
@GeorgeEdison He's an unstoppable machine.
01:16
I do actually have a question for AU that I encountered while working on StackApplet.
I'll post it shortly.

Q: How can a Qt application be notified that the user's session is ending and provide it with opportunity to save its state before being terminated?

George EdisonI am writing a Qt application and have run into the following problem: when the user logs out or attempts to shut down the machine, the application is instantly terminated without providing it any chance to save any data. I assume the app needs to listen for some event. I tried listening for the ...

01:37
all dogs kittens go to heaven
@rlemon Uhm... there is a sandbox.
what. the last one was just a general life statement :P
Sounded more like a death statement :P
buhdumdum
Qt Creator is the closest mankind has come to artificial intelligence.
01:47
ken jennings.
he fooled me for a while.. but now I see the truth.
It's autocomplete engine knows when I'm dereferencing a smart pointer and presents a list of methods from the pointed-to class.
@rlemon I'd stick Qt Creator up against him any day :)
@OctavianDamiean Hey when you get online you can check out github.com/rlemon/Chat-Easy-Input-Tools, it's working... but read the notes.
Objective-C has some terribly named classes: stackoverflow.com/questions/2725068/…
That would take half an hour to type.
ouch

Can you answer this? Making Existing Userlevel program root? http://askubuntu.com/questions/105033/making-existing-userlevel-program-root #terminal
Nice!
That took about 3 years.
How do you make liks?
Sitelinks?
You can't - Google does it automatically if your site has enough traffic and a high enough pagerank.
02:54
Any links.
In chat.
Ooooh.
Like this:
github.com/rlemon/Chat-Easy-Input-Tools install my script, select your text and ALT+A
;)
[text](url)
</selfpromotion>
^--- @rlemon's script works good for that too.
02:55
I saw the script, how to install?
[text](url "optional title") ;)
Downloaded the .js.
Wat now?
Thanks.
userscript are fun, just open the .user.js file in the browser and it asks to install it. refresh any open page to ensure it is active.
if you are in chrome... chrome://extensions/ to manage them.
02:56
StackApplet works!!!
Yay!
@GeorgeEdison good day to be you huh :P
My websites has no pages or pagelinks.
my website is MIA
02:57
lol, I've given up until I acquire a new host.
cboos.com/backup.html actually gives you something.
@William if you prepend your links with http:// the chat will automatically turn them into links. cboos.com
@rlemon I highlight the text and press alt a but nothing happens.
in the chat input you're highlighting it?
and have you refreshed the chat page since you installed the script.
03:00
bingo.
Now it works!
Thanks.
userscripts are bits of javascript injected on the page and can function with the page.
if you have not refreshed a page since installing a script the js does not exist on the page.
0.0 Injections are painful
Your'e hurting the pages!
04:05
@StefanoPalazzo You there?
I need to ask if something is "too visually simular to the Ubuntu or Ask Ubuntu logos.
@GeorgeEdison You there?
Or @rlemon ?
I need someone to judge if my logo is too similar to the SE or AU logo.
@William I'm here. Not sure if I'm qualified, but I'm here. :P
04:21
i'm here
still my text formatting.
Anyone here that would be willing to take a moment out of thier time to look at my logo?

OK.
Posting damn logo!
user image

+1
That's the key.
I'm going to go post it.
Let you know when It's up there.
04:23
does not meet the guidelines for size unfortunately.
@rlemon Could you go me a huge favor?
possibly ok for the g+ logo.
what is that..
What's your screen res?
1920*1080
OK.
Im on a netbook so that's why I cant get a bigger logo.
The favor is this:
04:25
no it's too big!
:P
are you going to g+ logo or promotion ads.
I made the logo in an online presentation editor.
I know this is a cheater way to do it but I'm really good at the tool.
40 secs ago, by rlemon
are you going to g+ logo or promotion ads.
Can I send you a link to the presentation, have you fullscreen it, and press printscreen and upload the result?
g+ logo
lol. dude SO not the way to increase the resolution.
It works.
04:27
save the image + load GIMP + resize + tweak the mutilation from blowing it up + save.
lol. ok i'll do it but i'm telling you.. not the best way to go about it.
send me the link.
Nah, Im installing GIMP now.
GIMP makes my netbook cry.
lol, probably better. :P but just for giggles what it the link.
Theres your giggles.
Doing it in sliderocket.
Thanks.
04:33
best I can do
big enough for you :P
pro tip: export to pdf (best quality), pull png from pdf.
OK.
How can I get rido of the White Background in GIMP?
what colour
I want it to be transparent.
ahh, ok that (for me) is still a bit harder without f'ing up the foreground
i'll give it a stab and if i can do it i'll tell you how.
@rlemon Well let me upload my 512 first
I want this one edited:
Get rid of White background
but keep white in Ubuntu logo
04:52
i think you may have to redo it in GIMP for it to look proper.
which shouldn't be hard btw.
OK
Doin that right now
The one I posted above doesnt look that bad, I think Ill keep it.
We dont really need the transparency anyway.
what is the font.
i'm gonna help (no credit required)
Why?
me's pretty decent in GIMP
What does you want to change?
04:54
because i'm doing a layover to remove the background and it's a Sans, but what script.
i want to change nothing.
1 sec
i'm removing the bg for you
getting font name
and thanks
@rlemon K. Font name is pigarniq.
is the download link
it needs to be unzipped
question.. the font package does not load properly for me.
Hmm.
05:05
how do i uninstall a font.
Ask Google.
I highly recommend Inkscape.
Yeah, I don't know how to use ith though.
So SLideRocket woks just fine.
Well, it's not too hard and looking back you will be very glad you did.
@William Does SlideRocket export to any vector formats?
Yeah, there are a billion thins I ought to learn.
05:12
PDF... SVG...?
PDF yes.
SVG no.
I would suggest exporting to PDF and then importing that into Gimp.
Done.
Now you need to make sure the aspect ratio is 1:1.
save link as <- there is your image broken up.
05:27
Thanks!
Does PNG support transparency?
yes
@rlemon Thank you.

I hate to point this out now but... Stack Exchange has a space between the "stack" and "exchange".

I know.
I could change it but I think it looks somehow better this way. And it would be a lot of work to change at this point.

@William not with the xcf i provided.
It is with the transparency at the bottom.
06:00
I am trying to put the xcf in but it keeps converting it to PNG
@rlemon One more thing: I cloned the top layer of dots in GIMP.
So there are 9 layers of dots instead.
Only reason I did that was so it would look nice in the 512 by 512.
just center it would also work
I did but it had too much extra white space.
Yes, add a layer of dots on top.
40 mins ago, by rlemon

right click, save link as. save the .xcf file.
open it in gimp

@rlemon you site cleaup script is displaying bad data!
my English at 2 2in the morning is worst than normal!
What site cleanup script?
Do anyone have any experience submitting patches or bug fixes?
@OctavianDamiean the one he made to show at what percentage of answered ratio we have at the moment, its showing 77% when we are at 76.68% or something :(
It's rounded up.
Not bad data, just inaccurate/imprecise data
08:32
I can figure that out by myself ^^

How do I update to the latest version of Unity? Do they have a repository for that?
I want the Unity that ships with Pangolin alpha.
Or even a later version.
@AmithKK thanks

Q: What's the deal with point releases in LTS versions?

Octavian DamieanThere are so called point releases for LTS versions of Ubuntu. 10.04.3 for instance. What are those releases about?

@ErenTantekin if you really want to use the latest unity version, it is highly preferable that you upgrade to precise.. mainly because of dependency problems.
@OctavianDamiean genuine question or what?
@jokerdino Wouldn't apt-get automatically install the dependencies too? I would actually love to switch to precise but Ubuntu alphas are usually extremely buggy.
11:28
@ErenTantekin the problem is some packages require older dependency while some won't. You will only end up with a lot of problem doing a normal system update.
and precise is actually pretty decent. i am using it since the start of January and it has been more than usable.
@jokerdino Personally I know what it is for, I just want to have such a canonical question around.
Right. Are you answering it or can I have a go at it?
Oli
Oli
Is it me or is there more random-unexplained-downvoting than usual? Or does somebody just not like me? I've had two fairly okay posts d-v'd recently without a clue on what I'm doing wrong
yesterday, by Bruno Pereira
down voting is just part of the game, should be useful as voting up. Voting is important, no matter in which direction. Just leave a comment explaining your reasons so the user at least has a chance to fix it.
You know why. ;)
@jokerdino Sure, go answer it. ;)

A: Sending mail without domain name

Oli Is it possible this if I don't have a domain name? The sort answer is Yes. You don't need a domain name to send email and my servers regularly send me emails (through postfix - you do need a MTA) about things from their hostname and my computer does the same. I'm constantly getting emails f...

@OctavianDamiean a couple of answers already.
Yup. Lekensteyn's answer is pretty good.
@oli , nothing personal

What's the deal with point releases in LTS versions? http://askubuntu.com/questions/106159/whats-the-deal-with-point-releases-in-lts-versions #releasemanagement
Oh hey @JeremyBanks!
Anonymous
@OctavianDamiean Hi! Just poking around the chats.
Ah, I was about to ask. :D
Anonymous
Yeah, alas I am not an Ubuntu user at the moment. Well, not a desktop user. I do use it for my personal VPS.
11:57
Interesting.
@JeremyBanksʬʬʬ Try it out on the desktop as well! You won't regret.
My first attempt at bug fixing :)
If you do, you know where you can find me. :P
@jokerdino Nice!
Why did it double-post all of your messages?
Anonymous
@OctavianDamiean I've used it on my desktop a couple of times, for a few months each. It's very nice (and fills me with FOSS-fuzzies), but OS X is hard to give up. But every time I see another story about Apple misbehaving, I feel more guilty, so I'll probably switch one day. :P
@OctavianDamiean First message, I forgot to add the attachment. Second one, I added a wrong one and then removed it.
Third one was a diff of the pot file, which is actually autogenerated. Then settled with patching up the hw.py
12:03
I got a good experience out of it, though. :)
Does it look good?

what trademark issues does the current g+ logo cause?
@htorque Doesn't follow the Ubuntu trademarks I think?

well, how exactly? :)
@jokerdino I wasn't it more like a problem with Stack Exchange rather than Ubuntu?
@htorque That is actually a very good question. :D
12:18
@jokerdino SE problems
yeah, i think it's a SE problem
@OctavianDamiean Not sure. I wasn't following the issue.
