I NEED HELP RIGHT NOW
How can I import an ogg into openshot?
why not transcode the ogg to something openshot gets along with?
i got in a fight with gtk-record and kdenlive recently and just circumvented the import/export issues by transcoding myself with ffmpeg/mencoder
@aking1012 Whats the easiest way to convert it?
I have a ogv and an ogg and openshot wont eat either of them.
@jrg The evils of social networking:
I use mencoder to reindex it...the ffmpeg to transcode. Something in ogv/Swscaler has been giving ffmpeg trouble for years.
Recently I switched to ffmpeg x11grab b/c I just got too irritated about the escalating difficulty in ogv stuff.
You know what, I'm downloading Pitivi. I give up.
^^this
Ogv offers great compressiong, but if none of the tools can transcode it out of the box...awesome performance becomes useless
compression
00:15
Yeah, but it's a heck of a lot better then wmv.
Agreed. The best vendor sponsored media format is mov
I consider ogg/ogv to be linux sponsored media. It's not exactly accurate, but you take my point
Point taken.
There's WebM too.
That's for HTML5 stuff.
/me despises webm for no good reason
And flash video (.flv) is aful.
again...agreed
if i can find a way to squish whatever into mov...i do it. it streams properly with little or no plug-in pretty consistently
00:31
does anyone that's here now work with rails?
00:45
@jrg is our resident Ruby expert ---^
I was commissioned by a friend to install Ubuntu on his iMac G5. Anyone know if that's possible?
jrg
jrg
@aking1012 George was right, i'm the resident Ruby guy.
whats up?
@John It should be.
My question is in questions...just want to know if it's too broad or if i'm just being stupid
jrg
jrg
i'm not sure I understand.
Did you already ask your Ruby questions?
I can do deb rolling, but I'm trying to get dradis into a service
0
Q: How to get a bundler enabled rails app running as a service with upstart?

aking1012I can get some random shell script to run as a service...that's not the problem. I think it's related to environment variables given some of the google-ing I did. Either a list of required rails environment variables or a sample rails app running as a service would be helpful.

jrg
jrg
00:49
@aking1012 generally you use passenger for that.
Let me find that question... i'm pretty sure it was asked already...
cool, if it turns out i'm just being stupid i'll delete the question myself
jrg
jrg
no don't, it'll serve as a signpost.
jrg
jrg
@aking1012 ok, i can't find the answer there.
if you don't get an answer in the next few days, i'll bounty it since we need a good answer for that. :P
thanks...it's one of those things that should def be on askubuntu
jrg
jrg
00:53
yup.
@William actually, blocking OMG! sounds like a pretty smart thing for openDNS to do... But, you do know you can ask them on twitter about why they do that, right? @openDNS replies to just about everything.
Restarting Chrome...
What happened to 2buntu.com ?
jrg
jrg
01:10
loads fine here.
The sidebar is missing.
(Actually if you scroll down, it's at the bottom of the page.)
i get it at the top in FF. possible an issue with chrome
Possibly.
jrg
jrg
yeah, FF loads fine.
Checks...
...oh, we're on Chrome 17 now.
jrg
jrg
01:11
loads fine in chromium
blame windows
Okay, sounds good :P
jrg
jrg
17.0.963.56 (Developer Build 121963 Linux) Ubuntu 12.04 - works fine.
+1 to working in chromium...this is on 11.10
and full updates
jrg
jrg
weird.
01:15
might be a packing issue. i think it's probably related to a 1px diff in interpretation of screen size. really shooting from the hip here though
sometimes a 1px size diff in packing can make some CSS styles pack from in the right lateral orientation but the wrong vertical orientation
that's my guess
jrg
jrg
oh, i think i know what happened....
i tried tinkering some of the footer PHP earlier....
Well, I now have my official first ever personal Ubuntu server. Just trying to figure out what I can do with it...
jrg
jrg
Setup a private sparkleshare server. Or a webserver. Or... break it because you're having so much fun.
I'm thinking I'm going to set up a media wiki site, and then play with SQL servers.
\o/ sparkleshare
jrg
jrg
01:23
@lazyPower I know, its a stupid name.
its better than sharepoint
jrg
jrg
but its git based so its instant awesome!!
I'm probably going to regret this, but what is sparkleshare?
git based does give it an immediate +1
Collaboration / sharing server
jrg
jrg
01:24
@Pearsonartphoto git-based Dropbox type replacement.
no windows support though.
as it should be...but not as is marketable
Hmmm.
I'm still a bit confused, but I'll try and process it a bit more...
You select a folder - and sync it with the server. Other people can share the folder you've synced with the server and receive real time updates as you change files, and vice versa.
Hmmm. Interesting, but with no Windows support at all...
It would work perfectly for my idea of having a source control server of some time...
jrg
jrg
windows support is coming, supposedly.
01:28
Why not just setup gitorious for that?
or dare i say it, use github :3
jrg
jrg
@lazyPower Gitolite is better. Wait, now we're going to argue over our favorite git server...
@jrg gtfo with that "this is better" nonsense - everybody knows that github enterprise install trumps all.
Honestly, the last time I delved into this stuff, CVS was state of the art. I really need to get up to date with this kind of stuff...
MS would change an API to break github if they had to...it's just too good of a product to compete with
jrg
jrg
@lazyPower Haven't played with github enterprise, but it sounds awesome.
01:30
its github with your company logo and some backend statistics, dassit.
i'm trying to convince my boss to let me buy it ^.^
The stuff that I would like to share is not open source, at least at this point in time.
we have 2 private repo slots left at our $50/month plan -- i need find some crap to stuff on there so we can justify the cost.
@jrg is tracking my resume as a single private repository justifiable?
jrg
jrg
@Pearsonartphoto Doing a git server is simple.
I know the words not open source are practically foreign concepts to Linux folks, but...
@Pearsonartphoto actually, i work in a cathedral style .net shop - so its not that foreign to some of us.
jrg
jrg
01:32
And I have nothing against people not open sourcing their stuff, because there is a time and place for open source stuff, and sometimes its not that time and place. :)
And realize I'm being a bit sarcastic with my last remark.
jrg
jrg
@lazyPower For you? Probably not, it would technically become their property if I understand it correctly....
Anyone ever seen this on Google before?
@jrg Im' game. they can have it.
Although, the way my Android game is going, it'd make almost as much money with me giving over complete control of it to the general public...
01:33
I've been seeing it for some time
It's the pre-emptive compliance to non-SOPA warrants after the public outcry
jrg
jrg
@GeorgeEdison What, the DMCA or the Ask On Google+ part?
i just noticed the G+ asking bit earlier this week, assumed it was a fresh rollout. - and assumed thats what he was asking.
jrg
jrg
@Pearsonartphoto Here's an open source model that works - just bill them for the binary. :)
@jrg The DMCA notice.
jrg
jrg
@GeorgeEdison I've seen it before
say it back in like, november
01:35
@lazyPower Sorry, I meant the DMCA takedown notice, not the G+ link :)
Well, right now my game is only ad supported, so...
jrg
jrg
don't remember what i was looking at.
I'm looking for a patch for a PC game - trust me, I'm not trying to download torrents for games or anything like that.
I believe that is not only wrong but hurts the developers.
google gives you a way to complain. it's upsetting in that it lets someone say "not allowed" without consent...
@GeorgeEdison <3
01:39
I need to restart. BRB.
Would Bazaar be a good choice for my needs? Just curious...
jrg
jrg
Bazaar would be good, you just need to figure out how to run the server.
and thats something I don't think many people know how to do...
It's a bit tricky I take it.
bzr is the defacto standard for development on ubuntu. - you cant go wrong with it.
Well, I'll have to wait until I finish getting Media Wiki installed...
02:00
@lazyPower Confirmed - Bazaar is the best distributed VCS :)
I wouldn't go that far ;) i'm a git fanboy but i certainly dont discriminate on anyone using bzr
Same here - I don't think any less of Git users even though I prefer Bazaar.
Both are awesome.
(I've never used Mercurial, but I assume it's awesome too.)
I'll yank a page from marco's book here and state - since Linus had a full hour complaint session about other version control systems, it really attracted me to git. -- very amusing to watch.
jrg
jrg
@GeorgeEdison mercurial is meh.
usable, but meh.
the googletalk was a little amusing for both mercurial and git
02:04
All I know is that Stack Exchange uses Mercurial - so it must have at least a little bit of awesome.
it was the first DVCS was it not?
jrg
jrg
Its not bad, but its still not great.
mercurial beat git to UI imo
jrg
jrg
oh, ok, this was funny. visited myspace for the first time in forever (no i don't have an account), and they had twilight on the front page - ok, i'm out of here!!!
@lazyPower anything you want to see done in ruby? I'm not out of ideas, just looking for some from outside my head. :)
Actually - I have not had a chance to fully appreciate what you have posted so i'm a horrible person to ask that question. -- if you haven't gone over effectively using bundler thats a good place to start since Rails apps now pretty much exclusively use bundler gem.
jrg
jrg
02:09
Oh, good idea. bundler is a good thing thats awesome.
That's going to take a few hours to complete though...
I spent quite a bit of time this weekend going over how to use some of the new rails3 features because FatFreeCRM was translated from rails2 to rails3 recently - and the documentation is so stale -- i gave up and started writing my own :|
jrg
jrg
so much video editing because bundle install takes forever... its like apt-get update on a dialup connection. :P
well, rails in itself takes a while - i was shocked to see starting the webrick server took circa 60 seconds.
jrg
jrg
You must be using rails 3.0 and ruby 1.9.2
rails 3.2 and 1.9.3 = wicked fast.
then again FFCRM had a dependency list of like 40 gems -- and yeah that was my combo
i was looking for stable. 1.9.3 is still fairly new isnt it?
jrg
jrg
02:11
1.9.3 is considered quasi-stable. it is backwards compatible with 1.9.2 though, i recommend using it if possible. :)
I'll look into it when i'm not writing a final project for school and coding my own CRM in C# :P
Maybe i can retranslate some of this CRM into a rails app this summer and cut my teeth on the language.
jrg
jrg
heh.
I really hate how i cant effectively work on my projects on my linux box. I realize mono has asp.net compat but still :| its nowhere near the same environment.
I shoulda found a job as a php developer smacks head
jrg
jrg
If you do rails dev this summer, let me know. Its starting to look like i might be on my own for the summer, in which case i'll be building that chat.SE clone and my online dating speed lunch consulting service. ;)
I doubt you'll be on your own this summer. Theres enough AU work to go around.
02:14
speed lunch consulting...hilarious
jrg
jrg
That makes me both joyful and at the same time sad. :P
@aking1012 basic idea: Buy me lunch, I give you an hours worth of consulting. boom, happy developer, better product, free food for me. :P
@jrg I'm fairly over extended in practice - if you want rails apps to help with - i should put you in touch with Jesse Dearing - the full stack casts proprietor. He's a ruby ninja and has quite a few projects he's over extended in
scrummageapp.com is one of his finer works of art.
jrg
jrg
@lazyPower I've got my hands full with rubycasts. ;) i've got 9 ideas, not including yours. just need to write them up in detail. :)
flowcharts ftw
I'm such a sucker for pretty diagrams
Man i love how responsive this framework is - @jrg i owe you a soda for pointing me to bootstrap. You've cut my front end work in twain
jrg
jrg
Heh. :D
Speaking of which, I need to make rubycasts responsive… and while i'm at it, might as well get those changes pushed upstream to jekyll bootstrap. (:
Open source For. The. Win!!
02:24
Truth
02:47
HEY!!
Bootstrap would be awesome for my home page.
I've needed to redo it for some time.
Indeed
The only tech i've seen that rivals bootstrap is Compass and SASS - ruby based but it generates cross browser compliant CSS3 markup - and has quite a few extras. So if you're feeling spunky - you can drop your own evolutionary framework in just 30 minutes.
manning.com/netherland -- sass40 discount code will save you 40% off the book.
Bounty offered: How can I show the application name in the panel? http://askubuntu.com/questions/101734/how-can-i-show-the-application-name-in-the-panel #appmenu
03:02
@jrg You avalible!
I has a long history with computers and parents.
Anyone know when @AmithKK tends to join?
How long do I have to wait?
@jrg Why does blocking OMG sound smart?
@William He's probably at his school right now, it's 8.40am here in India, he usually gets online in the evening around 4 pm... but never know.. he might be here sooner too :)
8 and a half hours- I cant stay up that late. But thanks for the info though.
Thats 5 30 am here :(
And I wont be awake for it.
@William oh.. :(
jrg
jrg
03:27
Blocking OMG! is smart on many levels - while I respect many of the people behind OMG!, the way they partnered with nixiepixel put them in my semi permanent bad books.
not judging, but whats your beef with nixie?
I dont know what you mean. What's wrong with Nixie?
jrg
jrg
Not her personally, but rather the way she presents herself and the way the tech community views her.
This what you mean?
Ah, she is fairly edgy. I see that.
jrg
jrg
03:32
We complain and comment that there aren't many women in tech, and then just read a few of her YouTube comments. :\
(granted, YouTube commenters aren't the greatest specimens of the human race, but still…)
</end-rant>
I'm trying to find some of her comments.
To speak into that though - she uses that to further her cause. If 80% of the fanbase is cruft gaming geeks & trolls - and 10% geek females - at least its progressively telling other women its okay to be a geek.
I quote: " For those of you who are asking about my photoshoot, I have posted a sexy preview pic on my Facebook. Simply "Like" the NixiePixel page to view it. ♥"
Point taken, @jrg.
@William ROFL :P
But, how does OMG UBUntu relate to nixiepixel?
@nitstorm:)
And this is coming from a 13 year old.
That makes it even worse.
03:36
alright boys, punching out now, see y'all in approximately 12 hours :)
jrg
jrg
@lazypower correct. But, they should be geeks, and geeks alike - and the guys shouldn't make a distinction between them.
@William LOL LOL :P
See ya!
Get some sleep. Sleep some for me :)
@jrg Thats one view - remember that humanity comes with many hats.
jrg
jrg
@william they partnered for some videos a few months ago. thats how it relates.
03:37
OK.
The neutral grey area that we like to paint on everything is not the definitive answer to everything community related. - without getting forceful in my ideas or trolling - thats all i'll say on it.
Well, at least she got the Unicorn thing right.
jrg
jrg
Should probably just stop this here (now that we've explained ourselves), since otherwise we'll be up all night arguing. ;)
Yep.
03:39
I'm not arguing thoughg.
jrg
jrg
@William True that.
@jrg You sound like my social studies teacher.
Well, troo tat!
Anyway, me has long history with parents and cmputers.
Got first computer when I was 8, running Windows 98.
My dad had to reformat the thing three times in the first two weeks.
jrg
jrg
Yeah you mentioned you had a history.
He tried 7 different parental control programs.
None worked.
The last one he tried was called "Child Proof".
@jrg Are you familiar with configuring translations on Launchpad?
03:44
I spent all morning trying to get rid of it.
@William Why did you try to get rid of it?
jrg
jrg
@GeorgeEdison Never touched them.
My dad, thinking that he had won, sent the program's creator a 50 dollar check.
@jrg I'll ask over on #launchpad.
That evining after the check had been mailed, I banged my head against the keyboard in frustration.
jrg
jrg
03:46
@William Look - ill tell you from experience, your parents will win. And when they do, you'll be screwed until you move out. Trust me on this.
It gave me a dialog saying "Thanks, you have now turned Child Mode off. Remember you can switch between Windows and Child mode by pressing Ctrl Shift P. Epic Win.
GO PEN TESTING!
@jrg No - they wont. I've got back track on my side.
@GeorgeEdison Why would I try to get rid of it? This is quoting from thier websiite:
Child Proof: Child Proof is a program that protect your computer from children by accident pressing wrong buttons or key. It hides all windows, the toolbar at the bottom and the desktop and replaces it by a toolbar with programs you allow your child to execute. This avoids most problems when children use the computer. The default exit key to exist from the locked screen is CTRL + ALT + Shift + P. This combination can also be changed in Options. Child Proof is unable to disable the power button and CD/DVD eject key but it can allow programs such as games to be played.
Ctrl alt SHIFT P. My bad.
jrg
jrg
@William I can't go into details on my experience, but trust me - they will win. They will win by taking your computer away and running it over with a car/physically destroying it. Also, while you might not understand now, there is a method to their madness.
Like Facebook Parenting for the troubled teen?
jrg
jrg
03:51
@George Remind me to run for cooking mod this year. ;)
Lol... - you can't lose.
jrg
jrg
@Williak pretty much.
@jrg Look, I get that they just want to help. That's great. But, I have a definite talent for computers and I want to develop it like any other talent. Getting around thier barricades only proves my skill. If I want to go practice sports, they don't have any problem with that, in fact, they encourage me to develop my talents. Why should the computer be any different?
@William I feel for you - but strongly disagree. I had an apt for computers from a young age as well (writing compilers at 14 / 15) and found that when I used it within the parameters my parents set out for me, things worked out well.
jrg
jrg
Anyway, I've warned you all I can, and I can't like, ban you from the Internet or something, so you and your parents need to work this out. I'm not going to say anything more on this topic since I've probably said more than enough.
03:55
Yeah, I'm done too.
Either take our advice or leave it - but there are consequences to ignoring it.
jrg
jrg
And lastly, I'm on low battery, so good night.
But what if I think the set parameters are unreasonable?I can only use the computer for an hour a day on staurday and sunday ifI have all A's no missings and all homework done. I think it;s unreasonable.
#jrg Goodnight.
@William I had almost the exact same restrictions (at a certain age), so...
If you think it's unreasonable, then talk to them calmly and explain why you think it is unreasonable.
jrg
jrg
@William but, if you have a change in mind, you have my email and I'm more than happy to help if you want me to.
This time I am done.
03:58
Ok Then I won't even bother.
Still waiting for an answer on #launchpad...
when I was younger my parents punished me for this and that. however during my punishments they would allow me to use the computer (without the internet) if I wanted to program. but that was only because I convinced them programming was educational and progressive towards a career.
</child_behavior_advice>
and it was under the strict pretence that programming was what I was actually doing.
