8:18 AM
WOOOO, 39k !

think I have to delete my two cats
haha congrats!

you could fix it with xargs right

@Zanna nah, you could edit the answer , (IFS=$'\n';cat $(cat file_list.txt) )
Muru already posted that, but you were sort of on the right track too

nope

rip cats

8:21 AM
TT

:) no worries

8:37 AM
@Zanna why delete that post?

Really not for the points, but could anyone end the unanswered status of this one: askubuntu.com/questions/866592/…? Op mentioned it works, but has left the building...

For all we know, for OP's case that would be perfectly fine

yeah maybe it would work for them, but it's really just as bad as parsing ls I think @muru
@JacobVlijm now you got +2

@Zanna haha, really not what I was after...

don't forget to upvote the question

8:41 AM
@edwinksl thanks for reminding :)

@JacobVlijm same also applies to you. if the question is good enough for you to answer, it is probably worth upvoting

@edwinksl I already did :)

thanks ;)

@Zanna it's good to keep the quick and dirty solutions around, as long as they're properly qualified

@muru ok, I will undelete and qualify :) I guess it provides context for your answer too

8:45 AM
\o\|o|/o/

@muru ^_^

oh look cats are back

@Zanna not enough body, we gotta workout

10:01 AM
this is the body of my text:

have we got a dupe target? askubuntu.com/questions/867376/…

10:17 AM
@Zanna I moved it to SU since that's a Windows issue.

Yeah I thought that too - thanks! ^_^

user136984
@Zanna: You don't have Chrome installed by any chance do you and be willing to test something quick for me?

@ParanoidPanda No Chrome here, sorry!

user136984
Ah ok, that's fine. :)

user136984
I just need to find someone else in the UK with it so that I can get them to test something regional for me.

user136984
10:27 AM
But it's fine.

hope someone else can help...

@NathanOsman as of 1.1.2017 I get 300mbps for 80 euro but that is with TV(=40euro) and telephone(=10euro). And we now also have HBO for "free".
Those 300mpbs also include the bandwith for TV if I watch TV and internet at the same time.

@Zanna I am not, please explain me where do you see that i am logged in as rootfonjeekay 16 mins ago

XD

@Zanna LOL
@terdon GO AWAY :=)

Q: No "create new file" field in context menu 16.04

fonjeekayWhen I right-click in an empty folder or an empty area of the Desktop, there is no "Create new file" field in the context menu. I'm running Ubuntu 16.04.

why did someone downvote me here just now: askubuntu.com/questions/254639/is-there-a-way-to-echo-an-alias/… :P

12:35 PM
Good Darkness to you
@Rinzwind 'cause weirdness

have an upvote...

@Rinzwind Gotta be faster!

thanks for the back up haha

12:56 PM
@George got any screenshots of these ads btw?
if it's doing popups in new windows, that's likely not the ads system; if it's doing full page, maybe it's something that I can forward to SE devs for investigation
more details about your ISP, Firefox version, addons running, etc. might help
@George and if you can torch your Firefox profile temporarily (move your firefox config directory to somewhere else temporarily) and see if it still does it, we can try and rule out malware

user136984
1:16 PM
When is 16.04.2 being released?

never

user136984
Because I'm wondering if I should upgrade my old machine to 16.10 or wait for the next 16.04 point release for the new kernel.

do you care about stability?

2:02 PM
@edwinksl adwonkzil pls revu

2:44 PM
yawns

@terdon I aint a pokemon

3:31 PM
@MarkYisri I got it to work then I went to bed

We could back our currency with bacon.

user136984
I'm sorry, but what is it with this community and Bacon?

@ParanoidPanda know python?

user136984
:D

@ParanoidPanda bacon is amazing...

user136984
It's been a while since I did any Python, but I do know it to some degree.

user136984
4:18 PM
I'm more of a Java man though.

okay...
I will ask but don't feel bad if you don't know

user136984
Ok

So I am working with a script that is supposed to upload images automagically to flickr
when I run it, i get the following error
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "flickrup.py", line 35, in <module>
sdcard = sys.argv[1] + "/"
IndexError: list index out of range
for the life of me I can't figure out how to fix it.

user136984
Well, as the error message says, you are specifying an index which is out of range.

user136984
You should probably set up some print statements there in order to see how far up it is counting or whatever it is you are doing with the array there.

4:21 PM
So what is the fix?

user136984
To not specify an index which is out of range. It starts at 0 normally.

@TheXed sys.argv is a list of your commandline arguments. You didn't pass it 2 arguments.

user136984
@Seth: That would explain it.

Or 1 argument. I can't remember if argv[0] is always specified or not.

user136984
Something is out of range.

4:23 PM
Okay so I did 0 and it seems to be working

user136984
Sorry if I'm not much help.

user136984
I only know what the error says.

@TheXed Okay so I just tested, 0 is always the name of the program. Probably not what you want. What are you trying to accomplish with that bit of code?

Hello ! :)

@Seth here is the github

4:36 PM
@TheXed Yes, and what is it trying to do? When asking for help debugging your code, you need to explain 1) what it is supposed to be doing and 2) what it is actually doing.
And how you're running it. What command do you use to launch it?

@terdon end result is to plug in USB device and auto load pictures to flickr...
the scrip is to authorize it flickr
command is python3 flickrup.py

It looks like it is expecting you to pass the name/path of the SD card to it on the command line

Hi @terdon ! :) Happy New Year ! :) Did you receive your "Xmas present" in the meantime (the new machine) ?

@TheXed OK. And what are you expecting the sdcard = sys.argv[1] + "/" to do?

@terdon I don't know...its not my code

4:39 PM
@cl-netbox Hey, happy new year! And no, will be in a few weeks.
@TheXed Ah! Now that's an important detail :)

@terdon Thank you ! :)

OK, then you need to run it like this:
python3 flickrup.py /path/to/card

@terdon I don't think he's writing it

No I am not writing it.

@Seth Yeah, figured that out. Eventually.
Ideally, @TheXed, just make it executable (chmod a+x flickrup.py) and save it in ~/bin and then you can run it with flickrup.py /path/to/card.

4:47 PM
I don't understand

why its not working that is...

o_O
user approved edit to their own post
but I don't think that should come up in the queue stats

Hi @Hizqeel ! :) How are you doing today ? ... and how is your sweet little guinea pig ? Fine ? :)

Greetings.. ! Hope all are doing well
@cl-netbox Hey o/ I am fine just feeling to much tired right now..... What about you? :)

Ohh he is great.. :p :D
but my cat is not feeling well :(

4:55 PM
@Hizqeel I am fine ... just wrote my first answer this year -> askubuntu.com/questions/867482/… ... was a bit of work, especially improving (editing) the question ... but my solution made the user happy ! :)

@Zacharee1 it always does

@Hizqeel Because of being bitten by the "hamster" ? :D :D :D If yes, tell your cat to fight back ! :D :D :D

@Zanna is that expected behavior though?

@cl-netbox don't know yet but she is sleeping and sleeping since morning .... I think that guinea did something because I saw him smiling all day :p :p :p

@Hizqeel hope it is nothing serious with your cat ! :)

5:00 PM
@Hizqeel a cat sleeping? god forbid lol

@Zacharee1 yeah why not? it counts as a review

Hey @Zanna ! :) All superfine ? :)

here she is isn't she cute :D

@Zanna well I can go to /tools and close questions there, or close a question by browsing to it, but that doesn't count in the queue

5:02 PM
throws sticks into the room

@Hizqeel WOW ... super cute ... indeed ! :)

@ThomasWard sets them on fire

@Zacharee1 :p

@Zacharee1 yeah and it doesn't add to your review count either, but when you review an edit to your own post, it takes you to the review queue, and it counts as a review

@Zanna that's weird

5:03 PM
shrug I dun make da rulez
blame Thomas (he doesn't make the rules either, but if we can't dump responsibility on mods, what are they there for?)

@Zanna true that

@cl-netbox :) :) :D

Saw this the other day... I laughed pretty hard https://github.com/narkoz/hacker-scripts
yeah, it was 2015

anyone have experience with usbmount?

oh superfine thanks!

@ThomasWard I already did that and it still happens

how about you @cl-netbox ? :)

5:14 PM
@George That's not the ad system here at StackExchange

sorry I missed that, Zacharee was pinging me too

that sounds more like malware, possibly.
perhaps a DNS problem pointing to bad servers

I'm hoping they get the new community ads post up soon.

@Zanna Fine ... now ... as I received an upvote on my first answer of 2017 ! :D :D :D

how do I copy a file from github?

5:15 PM
@TheXed you download the file in RAW form if possible.
then you have a copy of it.
if you want to create a copy of the file via GitHub you can't

What is this person thinking???

Q: Hard disk failure

jeff devasiaI have a sony vaio laptop 500GB hard disk i5 4GB ram . I had dual booted my machine with major portion as windows and just a 20GB ubuntu partition. Then one day i dropped my laptop which kind of damaged the hard disk. I could still run ubuntu but not windows. So i used the windows recovery env...

@TheXed not without git and such

so I have to manually make the file in the dir then copy and paste?

@cl-netbox haha that was me
how did I just answer a question after it was closed? o.O

@Zanna Really ? hahaha ... Thank you very much Zanna ! :)

5:18 PM
most welcome

@ThomasWard - Thanks for putting that Q out of its misery.

@AndroidDev LAZORZ ARE FUN :D

@Zanna That alone deserves an upvote ... for the magical event ! So here it is ! Cheers ... :D

@ThomasWard so is bacon

@Zacharee1 so is pie. and triple chocolate cake.

5:23 PM
@ThomasWard - Can you have a quick look here: askubuntu.com/q/867556/518562

@Zanna : Have another one ... and so now : Congrats for passing 200 today ! :)

@AndroidDev Orbital weapons engaged

@cl-netbox aww thanks a lot :)

target down

5:25 PM
:D

@Zanna You're very welcome ! :)

:)

i really wish more companies had developer APIs like Mongo's.
It would make my life infinitely easier.

@KazWolfe why would companies want to do that?

because better API and better documentation make people want to use their product.

5:39 PM
<--- is frustrated that there aren't 25 hours in a day.
@KazWolfe Hectane has one.

easy. stay awake for 18 hours, sleep for 8 hours.

What's cooler than an email server with an HTTP API? :D

o_O
how about an unsecured router open to the internet?

@NathanOsman I want moar

we'll have to set up a meeting with the laws of physics

5:43 PM
too bad they don't want to meet

@Zacharee1 are you comparing my application (with TLS support) to an open router?

@ThomasWard well if you'd just stop throwing sticks around...

@ThomasWard i haz connections.

@NathanOsman mebeh

@Zacharee1 boo. hiss. Throws a stick.

5:44 PM
lol

Feel bad about what you did now?

no

Darn.

I'm fine with 24 hour days

@Zacharee1 Okay, so no sticks. How about 18-foot long tungsten-carbide rods fired from orbit?

5:45 PM
ok

@ThomasWard I wonder if that would hurt.
I suppose if you were standing under one, it wouldn't hurt... for very long.

@NathanOsman probably not.

@NathanOsman Probably be squished instantly, fired from high orbit with a rocket booster attached to the back of the rod, that'll hit you real fast, and you'll just be obliterated on impact.
not to mention probably a half-mile-diameter or worse crater would be left behind.
:P

fun times

5:50 PM
@NathanOsman you should get a passport and come to LFNW.

I should, yes.

@ThomasWard I'm going to talk to the air force and have your launch permissions pulled.

@KazWolfe heh

Lol.
On the Amazon product page for the Nvidia Titan X, one customer asked:
> "Is this card can run DOOM (1993) smoothly ?"

6:27 PM
That was released long before GPUs existed.

6:55 PM
@NathanOsman answer: no.

@NathanOsman you're supposed to change GOPATH to your project directory when installing a package it depends on, yes? or no?

Nope.
GOPATH shouldn't change.

morning.

I always set it to "~/go" in .bashrc

grr. ok. So confusing for some reason.

6:58 PM
The directory structure looks something like this:
- go/
  - bin/
  - lib/
  - src/
    - github.com/
      - username/
        - project/

new acer notebook is going to cost 9k :X

@Rinzwind wat

@Rinzwind what the...

no acer notebooks don't cost that much, this is lies

@Rinzwind wtf

6:59 PM
4 ddr slots. i7 2 Geforce in SLI

that's too much

9k yen? 9k dollars? 9k rupees?

64 ram
@NathanOsman euro >:)

9k rupees is better :P

DAMN
IT IS NOT 9K

7:00 PM
$131 USD :D

Whatever it is, I don't want it.
Performance like that matched with a battery = 5 minutes of gaming.

well a 21-inch, 2560 x 1080 resolution IPS IS awesome :D

21 inch isn't a laptop. That's a freaking television.

It is a little out of my budget...
@NathanOsman devices like that are meant to be plugged in...

7:01 PM
@TheXed ...to multiple outlets.

nothing about the battery in the article :P

How on earth can the power supply transform that much power and still fit in a bag?

@NathanOsman lol...no

Why not just get a desktop?

@Rinzwind ...convenient.

7:02 PM
@Rinzwind I bet it doesn't even have a rechargable battery

I can't even stand a 17.3" laptop.

@Seth ALAS! Please take your sensible suggestion elsewhere.

@NathanOsman have a guess what the weight is

@Seth because you can't play with your desktop while your spouse drive the car...

@Seth 17" is about the maximum I would ever consider.
15.4" is about perfect.

7:03 PM
17.5 pound is what ...
9 kilo?

@NathanOsman yep, tho not for school.

UPS not included.

@NathanOsman OMG...So heavy!

@Rinzwind 17.5 lbs? Who is this for? Superman?
I've seen desktops that weigh less.

@NathanOsman a rich guy that can offered a butler to carry it around?

7:05 PM
@Rinzwind If you can do that, you can afford to pay someone else to take your wife shopping.

4 512Gb ssd's :P

...and just stay home.
@Rinzwind That's just... obscene.

7:23 PM
@NathanOsman That got a chuckle out of me, lol :)
@NathanOsman Not even. Two 1080s + i7 at full tilt = like 600w
@ThomasWard - Can you migrate to SU? askubuntu.com/q/867606/518562

No
but i'll mark it a dupe

@ThomasWard But OP says DVD won't boot, which indicates a boot order issue, which is an SU question, no?

@AndroidDev They're free to ask that question on Super User, yes. But the "Remove Ubuntu" part is a dupe of another question

shrugs

yawns
Can't migrate via my phone anyways, it breaks evillyh

7:31 PM
I screwed up?

@Zanna everyone screwed up
the World is screwed up
it is creeping ever closer to the unending eternal Darkness that shall engulf all things.

lol

haha indeed, but, more than usual?
I guess I'm OK

for now

7:32 PM

we shall all be consumed by the Darkness soon enough >:D

The darkness that comes from people who don't bother to do a 2 second google search before posting a terrible Q?

Brasero... Y U VERIFY DISC SO SLOW.

@Zanna Lol, you posted this comment just as I answered askubuntu.com/questions/867609/cannot-install-packages/…

@AndroidDev I can't complain, I'm sure I owe 90% of my rep to google-shirkers
if you gonna use sudo -i don't forget to exit the root shell when done
you may as well just hand a baby a blowtorch as drop a new user in there without reminding them to get out
I'd just sudo each command personally
oh I tried to upvote your answer but I'm out of post votes for the day
sorry I'll vote on it tomorrow

7:42 PM
@Zanna Good catch!

:)

Wouldn't want them accidentally using dd as root :)

zackly

zachly?

You know what's scary though:
rm -rf *
On your home dir
doesn't need root

7:44 PM
yup

I actually once fat fingered that on one of my VMs... but I had a snapshot :)

I nearly ran rm * in ~ once, I thought I was in a subdirectory mucking around, but I had already cd ..
I just glanced at my prompt and caught myself in time hahaha
yay for backups indeed...

@AndroidDev Did you mean: Pulling a Terdon?

Paranoid PandaI ran sudo chkrootkit today and was told this as a part of the output: Checking `tcpd'... INFECTED I am running Ubuntu GNOME 16.10 with GNOME 3.22, what does this mean, should I be worried and how can I investigate further?

user136984
The tool has given me quite a few false positives before so I'm hoping that that's all it is.

9:05 PM
@ParanoidPanda because, in your paranoia, you're leaving doors wide-open sealing every single crack and mouse-hole.
