Running Firefox dev? take a look at this in the 3D thing - dev-kitchen.com/ff3d
anybody willing to point me in the right direction for a raid problem? (ubuntu server 11.10)
00:56
Time to update VBox - it's crashed twice in the last two days...
QEMU
@jrg screenshot?
jrg
jrg
I don't know anyone who has that amount of time.
jrg
jrg
Thats entirely out of divs.
01:10
That is quite humorous... and totally useless.
<--- is currently benchmarking DNS servers.
jrg
jrg
Benchmarking DNS servers? Sounds boring.
I do have to ask, what is wrong with openDNS?
or are you benchmarking BIND vs DNSMasq?
Oli
Oli
@jrg Not really... Mostly paragraphs and sections.
It isn't the fastest DNS server in existence.
jrg
jrg
@Oli Same difference.
@jrg No, I'm trying to see which DNS server has the lowest ping.
jrg
jrg
01:13
@GeorgeEdison Ah, gotcha.
Not good... VirtualBox is still crashing... :(
QEMU is good for ISOs
And then there's VMware...
jrg
jrg
Except he's not doing ISOs.
and he needs to get access to his existing code and similar data.
QEmu doesn't offer the best performance when it comes to non-vxD CPUs.
VirtualBox does.
Yay! My VM started!
Now lets hope Juju behaves.
jrg
jrg
wait, you're doing nested VMs? You told me that it was impossible to do properly... :P
01:18
No, I'm not doing that.
jrg
jrg
oh. ok.
I'm just running Ubuntu 11.10 in Windows 8.
No nested virtualization here.
...and to be fair it's not impossible - just impossible to do with hardware virtualization.
jrg
jrg
but you said something about hoping juju behaves - juju is (at its core) a VM iirc.
I thought it was just a chroot.
jrg
jrg
I don't know, its using LXC which is pretty VM like in many respects.
for example, it has its own FS - it also has its own IP address.
i can ping my juju instance from another computer via its IP. drove dad crazy because of the mystery boxes on the network until I told himi what i was doing.
01:21
Haha... that's pretty funny :)
jrg
jrg
It wasn't for the 30 minutes while I sat there trying to think of what strange things I might have been doing... :P
I started rewriting StackApplet (for the fourth time).
jrg
jrg
Oh? Hows that going?
I'm excited - a totally clean codebase (since I'm starting from scratch in a different language) is always refreshing.
jrg
jrg
What are you doing it in this time?
01:27
@jrg C++ (with Qt).
Here's the DNS results: namebench.appspot.com/id/6226132
So it looks like Google Public DNS-2 is the best choice.
jrg
jrg
Cool (for both things)
:(
Running fsck...
Something is still wrong... the HD LED is saturated while it's running.
01:52
I need to copy my VMs back onto this laptop
Recovery mode mounts the root folder as read-only - not helpful :P
The whole point of switching to recovery mode was to remove a problem package.
jrg
jrg
@GeorgeEdison did you boot with networking?
jrg
jrg
iirc, that gives you write access.
oh. :\
It didn't :P
jrg
jrg
02:00
what are the other options out there? i'm trying to remember what they are...
I can't remember either.
Anyway, we're trying a regular boot now.
mount -o remount,rw /
That remounts everything as read / write?
it remount / as read/write, if you have separate /usr, /var, etc they may not be mounted yet
Ah, thanks.
02:12
@GeorgeEdison I suppose it is not too late for you to look into the Firefox Chromify-osd script? :)
@jokerdino Good thinking.
I will take a look at that now.
Ah, that is awesome.
Pulls in the repository...
@jrg thats funny. driving your dad nuts with cloud computers
makes me sad my father isn't tech savvy at all. I'd love to pull some schenanigans like that.
jrg
jrg
@lazyPower it was afterwards.
02:19
haha
jrg
jrg
Sure as heck wasn't funny then.
regardless, the premise is amusing.
jrg
jrg
It is.
so... i'm really excited that I have extremely good news and nobody to share it with. So i'm going to blurt it out here
jrg
jrg
She said yes? Got a new job?
02:21
Apparently the company I work for thinks i'm valuable enough to set me up with a down town apartment here in pittsburgh, completley subsidized
no rent, no utilities, no nothing. All paid for
!!!!
jrg
jrg
Oh sweet.
the down side is no pets, zero percent liability on the building owner having an extreme cat allergy
@lazyPower That sounds awesome!
I'm so excited, and i feel like i'm bragging bringing it up but i had to tell someone.
@lazyPower Well, we're glad to share the excitement with you.
Nothing wrong with that.
jrg
jrg
02:24
I'm excited! :)
:D <3 you all
(What happened to my /opt directory???)
i borrowed it?
jrg
jrg
ninja'd. >_>
Blame Windows 8. ducks
zing!
02:25
Does anyone know where Chromium (on Ubuntu) stores system-wide plugins?
Now that i've blurted out the good news, i'm going to head home. See you all on the opposite side of a commute.
(Obviously not in /opt :P)
@GeorgeEdison it should still save them to your user profile.
jrg
jrg
Cya @lazyPower. Stay safe on the commute.
02:26
Ty jrg. Oh and if i havent told you directly
CONGRATULATIONS!!!
(i voted for you, so approve all my edits :P)
jrg
jrg
You told me on G+, but thanks. :)
I think I am getting a Ask Ubuntu swag.
you deserve it jokerdino. You've done quite a bit around the site. I see your face all over the place.
oh thanks :D
k ttyl for reals this time.
02:28
I see that the swag is for all the nominees, though.
Whichever way it is, I wanted a swag! so, yeah~

I have 5 minutes.
The plugin itself is broken it seems.

@GeorgeEdison soft link it?
I can try that.

Works for me if I softlink it.

Q: How to make Firefox use chromify-osd?

jokerdinoI understand that Chrome has chromify-osd, an extension that lets it use notify-osd for notifications. Is it possible to customize it such that it works for Firefox as well?

@jrg Can you close the first question?
OK guys. talk to you later.
Yup.
@jrg: I can't get it to work with Firefox at all.
...even after symlinking with libnotify.so.4.

@htorque well that's what I thought and then I read what it's asking for "width", not waist circumference.
Which sounds like diameter. Never seen that used for clothes before.
@jrg What did you put in for the swag
@Oli seems like you folks are getting tshirts
@Sathya Yeah
11:03
\o/ T-Shirts!
@OctavianDamiean :D
i'd feel naked without t-shirts! oh, wait... :D

 Hi Amith,

I wanted to thank you for your participation in the Moderator election on Ask Ubuntu and for the contribution you make to the community. We had many great nominations and it is unfortunate that we could not elect everyone who participated.

I would like to send you a gift to show my appreciation, but I need some details from your first. Please supply your information at the link below and I can get that out to you as soon as possible.

[Link removed by Oli - probably shouldn't post that in public]
very cool!
11:37
there's a reason why I always add + to a bit.ly URL :)
Hmm... You do know that link is leading to bit.ly/askelection
Which Is not what you think :D
@Sathya I've got automatic rick-roll protection
@StefanoPalazzo LOL :D scnr
@StefanoPalazzo haha
There is a rickroll link in one of my posts on AU, amyways
11:39
notice the word "may"
quite a lot of them don't
it's a big thing here :)
This might be blocked too
yep it is
that's why I'm a member of the Pirate Party
so I can watch Rick Astley, and, whatever this is
:D
Want a free VPN @StefanoPalazzo ?
no
that's what the man wants me to do
I'd still be an active member of the PP if they'd use another name.
11:43
people I know from places where there is no freedom of expression use VPNs. It'd be so depressing to do that here :(
jrg

@Amith I put in Large, my small was almost too small. :p
So I'm expecting to keep this one around for a long time.
@jrg Yay! Your blue
@OctavianDamiean the name is good, isn't it? gets your attention anyway

I'm not sad!!
Oh you mean blue as in moderator blue.
@jrg And... It's time you fulfill your promise

Q: How does the site look like to a moderator?

Amith KKThe site has special features for moderators. Can I see how the site looks like to the average moderator(tools and stuff)

Answer this :D
With chat too :D
11:48
@jrg you got an email from SE staff too?
@StefanoPalazzo I don't like the name at all. It is counterproductive to believe that the broad mass of people will understand the joke.
If the broad mass would be that smart we wouldn't need a PP in the first place.
Just my opinion.

11:51
I'm a Django developer... We spend most of the day herding magical flying unicorns and only about 10 minutes writing code, because we're, like, double-elite. I once punched Steven Seagal in the face to see what he'd do, but his head fell off. That's the level we're at. Kirk and Picard couldn't take us.
It is the main reason why I am here. :D
@Oli You don't know how excited about the Ask Ubuntu T-shirts.
@OctavianDamiean well that makes sense. and it's not their only problem :)
@Oli heh awesome. :D
What I didn't know was being a moderator nominee gets you a T-shirt without getting onto the second page of the top users.
Can you answer this? Is there a way to completely remove "recently used" from open and save dialogs? http://askubuntu.com/questions/103890/is-there-a-way-to-completely-remove-recently-used-from-open-and-save-dialogs #places

Q: Making Existing Userlevel program root?

Amith KKIs it possiple to give root to an already running application which runs at userspace? Like x program is running, I did some unsaveable work on x program, But it needs root to complete. I do not want to restart the x program.

Good job.
@jrg What does yours read

@jokerdino you using a PPA or something?
No!!!
Obviously this answer is wrong.

A: Remove icons from menu

jokerdinoThe command to disable menus with icons is: gconftool --set /desktop/gnome/interface/menus_have_icons --type bool false The command to disable buttons with icons is the same as you note: gconftool --set /desktop/gnome/interface/buttons_have_icons --type bool false

Sigh. Buggy
Oli
Oli
@jokerdino Just took a look at your edit on that question and have a couple of tips:
1. use 4-space code indents for whole-lines of code.
2. If you put two spaces at the end of a line, it'll insert a `<br />` so you don't have to.
I see. Thanks for the tips.
Should learn markdown properly.
