this has to be a dupe (@Serg) askubuntu.com/questions/866010/…

@Zacharee1 found one, voted, although it could be debatable that it's a specific case and only tangentially related to the one i linked

@Serg looks like OP is trying to make a canonical Q

Maybe. Or simply trying to have Q&A solution for more rep
have done so myself, not gonna lie

same here, but mine aren't dupes :p
I want an OLED laptop

OLED laptop sound better than bacon.

@Zacharee1 I bought it for the camera, not the OS...

Windows 10 with Bash?

@Zacharee1 <.<

@TheXed isn't that the phone whose camera always crashes? Win10?

@Zacharee1 and it takes fantastic photos for a phone...

3:35 AM
@Serg :)

@Zacharee1 the camera doesn't crash any more than the phone...

hmm

@Zacharee1 but that might be because i am on the preview ring...

guess they fixed those problems
I kind of want to try Windows Mobile, but the "home screen" is too claustrophobic

@Zacharee1 I love live tiles...
getting information at a glance...(when the live tiles work)

3:37 AM
it literally makes me claustrophobic to look at the home screen :p
besides, widgets work well on Android

I never cared for widgets...

I think it's because the start screen is always missing a background when I've seen it

I did get one picture before the batter completely died lol...

lol

I need to find a better sample text for text processing questions, something like lorem ipsum

3:39 AM

@Zacharee1 I barely got that shot off....before it died...
I didn't have much time to do much...

I should put that into my profile description "I'm gonna lorem ipsum all over your quick brown fox with all the AWK and Python I got"

@TheXed I have to say, though, the HP Elite x3 is a tempting phone, even if it's Windows
if Android keeps getting more and more locked down, I may go Windows, and possibly flash AOSP to it

@Zacharee1 I have heard some good things about HP Elite X3...
But the Camera's are so freaking nice on the Lumia's....to bad MS killed them...

@KazWolfe remember the meta post about moderators judging the quality of an answer you posted yesterday ?
Do you have a link to it ?

Haha
This is gold

I think every place I've worked, there has been an issue with some genius replacing nulls with the string "null"
@Serg yep... I was saddened and amused to see that one
oh not that one... it's linked in comments to your link though: stackoverflow.com/questions/4456438/…

@Serg um? i don't remember posting anything about quality of answers.

@KazWolfe nevermind . . . I remember you posted something after saying "some things should just burn" but whatever . . .

Which is better - Portal or Portal 2?

@NathanOsman they are both worthy games...Portal 2 has a multi player component that is fun...

@NathanOsman The moar portals tha bettar

Fair enough.
I can get both games for about $6, and someone else said to get both.
So I just wanted to make sure he wasn't tricking me.

Hey guys,
I need some critical help here:

Q: LightDM does not display on startup?

RolandiXorI've had this issue since the switch to Systemd. It persists even on 16.10. When I start the system, LightDM does not show (it is running, but a blinking underscore shows up instead). I have to restart it from a virtual terminal. How can I fix this? (Reinstalling LightDM doesn't work, and rein...

@RolandiXor I'll take a peek

6:36 AM
I not only need to get this fixed (it's driving me nuts - especially now that Plasma 5.8 has put me in multimonitor prison), but I can't start a bounty for some reason (the next button isn't working).

@RolandiXor is switching to gdm an option ?

@Serg would be, if gdm would start :/
gdm and sddm won't work for some reason

i.e., use different greeter instead of Unity's default one. Alternatively you could try variation of lightdm versions.

I tried different greeter - same issue. In fact I don't use Unity's default greeter.
If I restart lightdm - it works. But it never works on start up.
Honestly, I'm getting worn out with Ubuntu's random antics as of late. Could just be my computer (it's old)... but still.

@KazWolfe thanks - I didn't buy it yet.
So if you want to send it, that would be awesome.
Apparently my username is "nathan_osman".

6:45 AM
@RolandiXor hardware sometimes just doesn't like Ubuntu, there's not much of work around against that. How about automating the restart of the lightdm ? That would probably be next best approach. It doesn't solve the issue, but at least might help you keep the sanity

@Serg if it'll work, I'll try it. What do I need to do?

@RolandiXor dude!
Long time no see.

Will it also end Systemd forever? Because I would love that.
@NathanOsman on here that is ;D

@NathanOsman you need to accept my invite

K. Give me a second.
@KazWolfe accepted.
@RolandiXor yes indeed.

6:48 AM
@RolandiXor em . . . won't end systemd, Ubuntu switched permanently to it. But what you would wanna do is add this line to /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf : greeter-setup-script=service lightdm restart
sort of like that

@NathanOsman I've been busy but it has been on my mind to return for a while now

Alternatively you could try different field, display-setup-script = instead of greeter-setup-script They all run as root anyway. So ideally that will make lightdm restart itself

@Serg I've never read that in any documentation anywhere - and it is so useful!

@RolandiXor lightdm doesn't seem to have good enough documentation, but it does come with those examples. It;s somewhere in /usr folder. I just copied all that into /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf so that i don't have to look it up each and every time

@NathanOsman sent.

6:51 AM
@Serg why do you have two greeters btw?

Because I prefer kylin greeter, it looks better IMHO
Actually, i have tons of greeters and desktops

@Serg but you have both in the config file?

@Serg what is with you and china?

One is commented out

Ohhhhh
My mind was assuming that maybe it allowed you to randomize the greeter

6:53 AM
@KazWolfe sweet, thanks.

That would be epic ;)

@KazWolfe Who knows, maybe I just like Asian culture and stuff. Or maybe I was Chinese in past life.

@NathanOsman no problem. i had a copy since i bought my steam controller.
I'm glad someone's finally playing that game as opposed to it gathering dust in my inventory.

@RolandiXor randomize greeter ? Like on one boot have one greeter, and on another greeter different one ? Lol, I could totally script that

@KazWolfe looking forward to it.

6:54 AM
@Serg haha I figured you would be able to ;)

if you're getting Portal 1, play it first.
it's not necessary, but you get a bit of backstory.
so you know what's going on.

I won't do it - because my system would no doubt find something to complain about, but it would be cool

@RolandiXor btw, do you want me to put a bounty on your question ?

And once you're done with both Portals, this is a very good community mod that just redoes the entire game: store.steampowered.com/app/317400
(free, too)

Since bounties are bugging out on your side, i could do that for you

6:56 AM
though you should be warned - that mod is hard. but good.

@Serg nah, if I get it to work according to your workaround, I'll let you write that as an answer and get the rep
I will try another browser later and see if the bounty "next" button works or not

Oky

otherwise, @NathanOsman, good luck and have fun.

Is that a Vorlon I sense nearby ?

@KazWolfe what I've seen of their edits were fine, at least improveable. Not one of the folks whose editing I'm frustrated with

@Zanna yeah, they're improvable, but they're really just going after really low-hanging fruit.
I might get more aggressive with my denials.

Hmm I'm grateful if people do anything useful at all in an edit, and some do the opposite, so however low the fruit hangs I'm happy if someone picks it and brings it to my attention

I should be more committed . . . I mean gitted . . . I mean commit more to git

Q: How To have different login screen wallpaper on ubuntu 16.04

Ben AcostaThis is not a duplicate as it is a question for Ubuntu 16.04. I would like to know if there is any way to change the login screen wallpaper, without changing the desktop wallpaper. In other words, how to independently change the login screen wallpaper. Thanks.

*facedesk*
OP posted same question again for new version, said it's not a dupe, linked back to orignal question he posted, it works.

Closed as dupe!

Review queue. Please stop throwing spam audits at me.
I go to flag it and it isn't there.
one hat from complete secret domination :D

@KazWolfe Why the edit here?
Readability went down after your edit.

@Fabby I don't like unnecessary italics and emoticons.
it interrupts the flow of the post. I'm going to read it all, you don't need to empathize things.
(i mean, you always can revert, just my 2c)

Added bold back in, left the shrug and italics out.

good enough. i'm not getting into an edit war.

:D

ugh, so close to being the first user with all secret hats.
i just need @Videonauth to award his bounty to someone other than me :D

@KazWolfe I mean: I wouldn't have minded if you would have upvoted after your edit as that would have shown it's an inporovement, but without, I'd like to keep the bold.... The shrug was just to get acceptance... :P
(and as I've got acceptance, it can stay away...)

(hint hint, @Videonauth, i know you're here :P)

@KazWolfe Want me to ping him to come on-line?

he's here.
nathan's script shows him as on this tab.

OK...

but he's not gonna get any more answers.
if he would, i would have already posted them :D

cat'ing 29 million files into /dev/null took 13.18 seconds O_o
@KazWolfe OOoooh, I see now - it was same user. Well . . .some of us are quite forgetful . .

hi @Serg

Hmmm, piping 29 million lines took about a minute and 9 seconds for my script. And that's with default sys.stdin and readlines() function
Actual GNU tail took 17 seconds via pipe
Hmmm, still lots of room for improvement

8:00 AM
what are you trying to do?

8:42 AM
@KazWolfe working on my python tail implementation. Just rewrote it slightly for python3. Seems to be slightly slower though
( than python2 )

why are you making tail in python?
and why are you expecting c-level performance from Python?

Because why not ? And because boredom ? And because I'm having small bit of fun with it

huh.
i wonder how efficient i can do this with Java.
actually, this sounds like a good PPCG challenge.

Sigh . . . Rewriting it into python 3 seems to have taken more performance toll than necessary . . . .It takes 0.91 seconds for just 5 line file
$ time ./pytail -l 3 -f loremipsum.txt

    0m00.82s real     0m00.12s user     0m00.01s system

wow.
you're not storing all of this into memory, are you?

8:48 AM
Nope, if it's a file, I'm actually reading the file backwards, counting lines. Problem is that in python3 I have to open file to read in byte mode, rather than just read mode
Of course, I'm watching a livestream right now, so chrome hogs up my system too
but seems the performance hit is more due to python3
With pipe, I have to read it into variable , though
(I made my script distinguish pipes and actual files)

yeah, this sounds like a good PPCG challenge.
given something on STDIN, output the last 10 lines (as denoted by \n).

@KazWolfe not very good challenge , because people will post GNU tail as shortest command. Plus, if you're doing actual implementation, there's a lot to consider, so it's not like it's something golfable

@Serg not a full implementation, and obviously not standard loophole.
i was just thinking "given STDIN, output the last 10 lines"

python -c "import sys;print sys.stdin.readlines()[-10:]"
That ^
That's what I actually use for dealing with pipes for now. Latter I plan to optimize it

still interesting to see how things are done with esoteric languages.
and @Serg, here's the delimiter.
"Your program must successfully execute on any system with 8 MB of RAM"

9:01 AM
O_o

so you can't do that, or dump all of STDIN into a variable.
or some similar restriction.

8 MB of RAM sounds to me like tons of pain

(or similar restriction, 8 MB wouldn't work for reasons)
just something to stop you from dumping all of STDIN into a variable :D

you'd have to dump things into a variable. well, an array or list or similar.
if it's head implementation , it's easy and no variables needed
just print bytes till you hit x number of newlines

will post in sandbox first, and see what happens.

9:08 AM
Well, i think I'll be done with this for today. Maybe I'll push it to git tomorrow
so far i am moderately satisfied with it
Still bothers me that it takes much longer than actual tail

@edwinksl i am tempted to by from those guys

lol
hopefully 2017 isn't worse

Let's make 2017 great.

heh
not looking promising i must say

9:13 AM
is that a gold badge hat @edwinksl?

Optimistic stay we must. Path of Sith negativity is
5

@Zanna yup! got it the easy way in SO :p

@Serg Just saying, the Sith is objectively superior to the Jedi. They get the benefit of both dark and light-side powers.

@edwinksl congrats :D
@KazWolfe depends what you mean by better. Apparently my definition is not the same as yours :p

Plus, the fact you can tap into anger and emotion for power allows you a lot more strength. So, ideally, a sane/rational/morally conscious Sith is pretty powerful and is objectively better than most Jedi.

9:16 AM
@KazWolfe No, not really. Sith preach that Dark side is only superior. Grey Jedi, who actually balance both light and dark side, are far powerful. Take Mace Windu for example. He has purple light saber exactly because he is balancing both dark and light side

Is that EU?

Also, my chrome lags

Because I have no idea about anything re EU or prequels.
so shush.

EU ? Extended Universe ? No. Mace Windu is the black dude ( aka Samuel L Motherducking Jackson ) from first 3 episodes

those are prequels.
so i have no idea

9:18 AM
Also, i know because i've ben watching far too many star wards videos on youtube last few days

still, my point still stands.
a lot more power and capability in a middle ground.

Agreed
Although really it depends on a person.

so essentially dark-side with more moral caution and ethical sense.

If they're committed to mastering either light or dark side or balance of thereof, i think that person can become powerful enough

this is why i go Ch/Ne

9:22 AM
What's Ch/Ne ?

Chaotic Neutral

and i go derp . . .

or Chaotic/Good. depends on my mood.

You are CN by nature I think, you can't help it hahaha

i am, but i have a moral code i follow for the most part.
or, the Ch/Ne battlecry: "Woo! Swords!"
actually, that's just chaotic.

9:28 AM
Hmmm, if I flush stdout, it slightly improves performance. So maybe I could do some kind of optimization with stdin too

or, i'd think it's fair to say Chaotics are the type to learn "odd" skills just "because": hacking, lockpicking, knife-fighting, etc.

Oh, you like knives too ?

(yes)
the problem with the good/evil alignment though is that's very subjective.

Dammit, python3. It just is so more complex and bloated than python2 it seems

i wonder how @ThomasWard aligns...

My python2 version takes like .35 seconds, while python3 version needs .65 seconds. Almost freakin double
