Q: Bad admin choices regarding a compound question

Evan CarrollThere is a compound question asked; a question that solicits a CLI method, and a GUI method. I keep seeing places refer to the "partner" repository as a place I can get software, how can I enable this repository? Please specify how to do this graphically and via command line. This raises a ...

A: Bad admin choices regarding a compound question

Zacharee1The body of your question doesn't really seem to relate to the title. You also don't really seem to be asking a question in the first place. Are you complaining about how Thomas rolled back your edit or are you complaining about how the CLI method is inferior or are you complaining about the ques...

@edwinksl on that question you said I should learn git-clone first and foremost Elder Geek linked a how to guide for me. But it said you need to know pull, push, fork, etc. first which I don't know. I only know Linus and 2 or 3 other guys created git-hub when they got pissed the ECM software vendor they were using wanted to charge them in the 90's.

huh? linus torvalds didn't create github

he created git. github is a private company , not affiliated with Linus

1:34 AM
@TheXed - Hopefully you won't have a bad day tomorrow, LOL! chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/33067173#33067173

sorry for lumping git and github together.. you can understand the mistake hopefully

@AndroidDev this is a legitimately scary situation we are in...tomorrow we as a nation ask our self's "which Hell do we send the United States to?"

@AndroidDev TheXed invited the world to look into his router, so I asked him to ping me when he's not around so I can break-in and use a screwdriver to open his router :)

@WinEunuuchs2Unix git is rather critical to a lot of linuxy things though... you could certainly keep downloading zip files from github but i myself would never do that

@TheXed <sigh>Yep</sigh>

1:37 AM
@TheXed which of the two turds shall be the shiniest ?

@WinEunuuchs2Unix if you find anything interesting let me know...

@edwinksl the only thing I've "gitten" off of github is "EnhanceIO" which bricked my HDD after a kernel update late last year.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix lets say your on the github porject page you want to have there is a button clone or download, simply copy the link (I use my own here as example) then hop into your terminal navigate where you want that repo clone to exist and then use 'git clone github.com/Videonauth/passgen.git`<-- just as example

@Videonauth fair enough, but in Elder Geek's link you have to setup a git account first... sorry "github" account first.

They did a mock election at work today and trump won by a land slide, but interestingly enough the Libertarian candidate was in second and Clinton 3rd, then there was a few write-ins..

1:40 AM
@Zacharee1 i notice all of evan's meta posts are heavily downvoted lol

@WinEunuuchs2Unix It's not needed for jus t cloning, but if you want to fork and do pull requests etc you should have an account

@edwinksl nice

I sold software for voting machine vendors in the states back in 96... I bet it's as bad as my answers in AU and it's all rigged :) Clinton is sucking up the non-white vote with forked tongue that Donald will kill them... Look how many she's signed off in killing in ME and Africa through seven major wars / invasions to save them from their governments.
@Videonauth I don't forking know how to pull or push or why I would want to do either or all three at the same time.

you forgot to use quotes for "save them from their governments"

it's funny the government was one guy
hussein, ghaddafi, assad.
but in the USA when someone is shot it's never obama but Cop X or Y or Z.

1:43 AM
well its easy, forking means you make a copy of a project on github to your own github space, there you can pull and push to and from your computer the changesd sources, and a pull request is if you want to contribute your changes/fixes to the original project

who is usually let go after grand fury indictment.
@Videonauth I was never good on multi-person programming projects in the 80's when they first invented library check out systems for code... "I code alone, with nobody else" (George Thoroughgood)

well both has its benefits and cavats

@WinEunuuchs2Unix well the reason why the Government is only one person in these other countries is because if we started picking out individuals in other countries that committed Crimes we wouldn't be able to pronounce their names, so we collectively throw them under one person.

Well I call everyone in the USA Hillary Clinton now.

@WinEunuuchs2Unix I rather be Al Gore, since I invented the internet...

1:48 AM
Well I kind of know your name,,, so you would be Xed Sillary Clinton.

remind me only to play around with silos on the nexus 4 and not my daily phone...

where did you get the nuke launch codes for the silos?

@Mateo there is a biker bar down the road called physco silo...

@WinEunuuchs2Unix they have been for over 3 decades simple a row of 8 zeroes

well, not those silos... but yeah did "nuke" the phone - had to reflash

1:49 AM
Perhaps you should just go there instead of hacking your phones...

When I bought my android phone (Lollipop I think) there was all kinds of talk of rooting your phone at the risk of bricking it. and I thought... why would I want to do that?

I have never rooted an android device, but I have jail broken a couple of iPhones...

Heck I just figured out long press with finger a fortnight ago to invoke, copy and paste function based on AskUbuntu bounty question on mimicking smartphone behavior in linux.

kind of fun knowing you have the tools to simultaneously destroy then recreate your phone install

I can borrow a hammer from work to destroy my phone :D
I"m just focused on getting plymouth sunrise to start earlier and last longer.... plus figure out why "loading initial ramdisk" in grub lasts 6 seconds.... I'm just a beginner :)

1:55 AM
@WinEunuuchs2Unix you may be able to destroy your phone with a hammer, but then it is very hard to repair...

I'll leave the complicated stuff of pushing and pulling and forking all over the world to you guys ;)

well i off to bed got a headache from trying to use classes in python

@Videonauth good night...

2:19 AM
If you keep going, does that make you the serial killer?

2:50 AM
Hi
Anyone here good @ wireless stuff?

3:03 AM
rmmod: ERROR: Module iwlwifi is not currently loaded

@Videonauth In Python? Most simple thing ever. (Unless you want to fiddle around with metaclasses, but whenever you believe you need those, that's a sure indicator that you should rethink your architecture...) You may ping and ask me if you need help.

@ByteCommander well im actualy fiddling around with pyopengl and pygame and game objects are simply best being objects (i.e. classes) and not functions :)

awake again? o.O

you just woke me lol

Aww, sorry.
Why don't you shut down the computer or at least turn the ping sounds off during htose rare hours you go to sleep?

3:13 AM
bad idea putting the laptop with sound on near my pillow

was still reading documentation to sleep in over

Okay, haven't done anyting with those two libs yet.
But what's your problem with creating a class?

well im comming from a c++ background
and python classes are just so not like c++ classes
its simply hard to change thinking patterns over to python which where build in years over years of c++ usage

Okay, it's simple.
You do not declare any fiields/properties first.
They are simply added any time, normally in the __init__(self, ...) method which acts as constructor.

3:20 AM
yeah so far i have come today and got a small window open with a guy moving around, its more the reading through the pygame.py modules which gave me headaches
understanding their inheritances of their module classes
and many of them are not even classes

Also, methods in the class don't magically have access to the current object instance they're invoked on, but they get this object passed as first parameter, which is why they all look like def method_name(self, other_args):

a class with thow methods from which one is init- is no class at all

well some of the pygame classes in their modules should have been simple functions

If you declare a class, it's a class. Can be as simple as class MyClass: pass

3:22 AM
yeah
yeah but imagine you have a class with an empty but declared init and one class method, thats not a class that is for me in my eyes a hidden function and should for gods sake please be declared as such

If somebody uses a class just to wrap a method, that's probably a clear indicator they're coming from a Java-like background and don't understand the Python way.
If that one method could be static (self parameter is not used), then yes, a function object would have been more appropriate there.

good talk about that i just saw recently and which even reminded me on a talk bjarne stroustrup gave is hthis one youtube.com/watch?v=o9pEzgHorH0

4:23 AM
@Zanna i don't really know what the british think of the election here

4:35 AM
Ugh, can't sleep for more than a few hours the 2nd night in a row.
Hi all!

hi!
@DavidFoerster are you sure more screen time will help? :P

4:52 AM
i hate it when i know question is a dupe because i answered same one a while back, but i can't find it

no, but tossing around in bed for another hour won't help either.
@Serg hear, hear.

@DavidFoerster enjoying insomnia huh ? yep, been there. Try ASMR and relaxation sounds videos on YouTube, mostly helps me, although i think I'm getting desensitized to them after like 2 years of listening

I only have rare and short episodes of insomnia (that don't have trivial causes like too much dinner or excitement over the next day), so I'm not too worried about the lack of sleep.

I have exploding head syndrome...if that makes you feel better...

At this point I just hate the feeling of boredom when lying in bed. If I start to think about something interesting it'll just keep me awake. I usually try to think of relaxing and cosy situations but I can only do that for so long.
@TheXed: :-S

Now I remember why I got speakers with such a high bass tolerance. DAT DROP

"can any one help me out doing Skype for Business installation on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS" , I assume OP wants to install Skype for Business, but they didn't word it properly. Biased close, I'd say.

Seriously. Last time the bass dropped this hard, AU's flag queue was instantly cleared.

@KazWolfe maybe you should drop that bass more often ;)

@Serg I thought same. Also they replied in the comment that the targeted answer didn't work

@Serg well, I NEED MORE SUBWOOFERS THEN
just replace all of my walls with subwoofers. I think that will end up causing a world-wide quake.

6:30 AM
@Anwar vote to reopen. I don't think OP will come back, but still maybe it'll be useful to others

@Serg that q got deleted already
and is being used for audit!!

"On November 7, 2016, the world's first Magnitude 10.0 earthquake ever was recorded. The epicenter seemed to be the house of one Kaz Wolfe, where he replaced all of his walls with subwoofers and turned the bass to 12. More on this story at 11."

@Anwar well . . .not anymore I guess - I've edited it, cast reopen vote and undelete vote

was that 5 pings?
come on, you can go higher. Like... 30?

I just realized that I can pass variables to function by prepending them to function call and using them as environment variables for the function
saw this on one guy's answer
Apparently he made a mistake, but . . . what a clever mistake !

6:40 AM
like?

Well, how do we usually set environment variable temporarily for a command ? something like LC_ALL=C apt-get update , right ?

yes
So can we do same for function call?

Yes. Same with functions, student_name="John Doe" function_call And then I can call the student_name variable from function because it's already in that function's environment

ah! Nice thing I learned. Thanks
..OT..Carefully (if you need it) read this answer and see if it answering the question askubuntu.com/review/low-quality-posts/639894

Usually you'd have to pass like so function_call "$student_name" , so in function you'd use "$1"

6:44 AM
yes

@Anwar seems slightly confusing. It is definitelly an answers, ok quality I'd say. I think it tries to answer , but just doesn't quite get there

@Anwar I think it's because OP didn't clarify what they wanted and abandoned the question.
Though I would have preferred to close it as a duplicate as you can see.
…since OP claimed it wasn't a duplicate but didn't say what they wanted instead.

They wanted Skype for Business setup

Yes, and?

7:07 AM
That much was clear from the question. That would make it a duplicate imho.

@DavidFoerster closed as unclear. not dupe

I know and I explained why I would have preferred the duplicate.

That doesn't make it a dupe. They wanted "Skype for Business" in Ubuntu.

So? There's already a question like that → dupe

The linked question is about "Free software to connect to that Network". This one is using that Network in Ubuntu
If the answer is not possible and that should be the answer
and the answer there is just a link

7:18 AM
If you follow that line of argument it should be closed as unclear (as it was) because OP didn't clarify what they wanted.
Or they only did so vaguely and in the comment section.

comment should be considered while closing a question.

Anyway, don't argue with me. Open a meta question instead. ;-]

Well... I didn't start the arguments

I wasn't complaining or implying that. :-P
Eh, time to "get up". See you!

@KazWolfe I think "Ubuntu repository" is better term than "Apt cache" :)
@DavidFoerster oh. That's ok. cya :)

8:03 AM
but bewareim running on the proposed branch :)

I remember I went to a workshop where we were installing LXLE on old laptops
I installed offline because Broadcom, and (I think) as a result I got every repository in the history of the world dumped into the sources.list and sources.list.d
I didn't realise that until I tried to update, when I just got a huge list of 404s

im running on broadcom on my laptop so i know your pain lol
on the other side my 300 mbit wlan on my desktop was running out of the box

(it was a beginner workshop, I didn't realise that I was not such a beginner as others)
@Videonauth sweet!

and as i said in end of february i not hav touched windows since :)
and not feel the urge to go back to windows at all

I saw the 404s and thought, ah, I need to fix my sources... and my mind went momentarily blank... where is the sources.list? So I did ls /etc assuming I'd know the way when I saw it, and URGH everything was WHITE...
@Videonauth congrats, I'm not using it either :D

8:08 AM
/etc/apt/

... so I did vim .bashrc to fix my aliases, but it said vim is not installed

hrhrhrhr

(yes I know, it was a momentary blank only)

i must admit i not like vim much tho

so I did sudo apt install vim and that did work (somehow)
but the guy next to me, the volunteer helping out said "you use vim??!!"

8:10 AM
god why do all tutorial guys on youtube speak so quietly
-.-
just blasted my ears away i think
all i hear right now is a beeping

so I said "oh um... yes, but I don't want to fight over it!" and he said "what?" so I said "what do you use?" and he said "oh, nano or something"
@Videonauth haha that's not very helpful

yes thats what i use mainly too
i tried vim in my first days and not got a realtionship to it, but for me its simple who whants to use it fine by me
on my machine no one feels lost i got emacs vim joe and nano on the machine
because i tried them all, and have been to lazy to uninstall the rest

@Zanna eh. EC is a wee bit.... Infamous

anyway I again do vim .bashrc and IT'S COMPLETELY EMPTY so for immediate relief I type alias ls='ls --color=auto' and save and exit, and then ls /etc and aah much better, and the volunteer (who is Hungarian I think) says "you have the good knowledge", and then I remember where I'm going and delete all the junk in sources.list.d and open the sources.list and start commenting stuff out in it, and the workshop leader comes over and says "what are you doing?? don't CHANGE STUFF!!!"
and the volunteer says to him "it is ok, she is smart"

8:14 AM
and I finish it and do sudo apt update and it works perfectly hahaha
@JourneymanGeek haha thanks for the heads up
@Videonauth that's nice :D I have a lot of text editors too thinking I will learn them, but I only use vim at the moment

hehehe most i see lately over the day is pycharm
remembered an old dos game i enjoyed playing back in the days, and actually working on a remake in python
yeah yeah, i know there is dosbox lol but wheres the fun in that :))

@Videonauth haha I have a lot of fun with dosbox because I never used dos, so it's amusingly novel to me

well see if you can get your hands on vermeer
should be not under licenses anymore

8:30 AM

Q: Embedded Video(& Youtube) on AskUbuntu Questions & Answers?

Wafie AliHow is it possible to embed a video when we submit a new question or answer? Till now, this feature is only applied for images. Any ideas on how to solve this or is this feature currently in progress and will be implemented soon?

Argh, not that again!

@AskUbuntuMeta This feature is in Arqade but I don't think we need it here..

11:22 AM
Ugh, can you imagine? "Please watch this video, there's a question in there at around 11:43, I just need to spend a few moments introducing myself and telling you a bit about my favorite color first"
Or, "this video answers your question perfectly! Watch it dude!"
And there goes what is probably the best feature of SE: the ability to edit and improve posts.

I have a downvote on that Meta answer
Now who could've done that... /S

Everyone: I strongly recommend you step away from the bars of the cage and do not engage with Evan Carol. He has, uhm, a history.

@terdon I just answered :p

And did so very well, too. I'm just recommending you avoid getting into any kind of long discussion. I very much doubt anything productive will come of it. Your choice, of course, but I did warn you.
Oh, which isn't a threat, by the way. Just a warning that you might be in for a fun ride :)

@terdon haha I sooooo agree, please no video...

We can improve the post with deletion?
@Zacharee1 More of "dude, you do not want to go hug that bear"
We're not threatening you. Just... attempting to head off you being a chewtoy

@Zacharee1 Yeah, but not by me! I just wanted to make sure you didn't think that was me saying "don't engage or else". It was just me saying "engage, but at your own risk" :P

I wanted to document the steps I used yesterday to install font-manager from source. because the PPA mentioned in that q failed

@Anwar thanks :)

@Anwar I've not used it, but sounds interesting. Looks like it's for documentation, benefits are version control, custom access and editing rights and a web console for writing and editing, the benefits of distributed GIT storage served over https. Looks like they only charge when you want to keep books private.

@Arronical Yeah. Pretty nice thing. But it seems their gitbook client software is based on electron, which I don't like much.
