00:01
I think I just broke my back
yahoo.com went down today?
:5871 Are we still on same thread with your the original post starting with "Please look..." ?
@DoR: Thanks! I appreciate you doing this!
what is yahoo.com?
that was another joke by the way...
@MarcoCeppi why..... you....
00:13
:5873 I've got your light and dark icons
BTTF FTW!
@Marco: Great!
My cursor mysteriously disappeared for a minute - had to restart GDM.
make sure you watch the first one in 1080p looks pretty amazing...
Is that the new Blender movie?
00:23
I don't know if it is new or not but it is pretty amazing
It's new.
It just came out a month or so ago.
@Marco: Can you provide the icons as PNG images?
yeah, just touching up
Also, are you saying you want the blue icon to remain the active icon, or is there another one for that?
00:25
@GeorgeEdison Blue as active :)
Okay
So should this be an option in the preferences dialog? Maybe under "theme"?
it should just drop the icons in the relative place - I have no idea how that works TBH
But how does the user pick which one they want?
it should be derived based on the appearance - like when I choose Radience all my icons chance appropriately. I don't know how to make that happen
Me neither :)
@Jorge: ^----- ??
Those are resized to 48x48
I think the icon should change after being active for so long??
like say a minute or two after turning blue, it turns back to the gray?
but what do I know?
No, the whole point is that when you look at it later, you see that something has happened.
That doesn't work if it changes after 2 minutes.
@TheX It's similar to the messaging menu
00:31
yeah but you can always click on it, and see that it has changed?
But I see what you are saying
@TheX how would you know to click on it :P
well... I don't know...
just a thought I had, didn't say it was well thought out now did i?
there shouldn't even really be an icon, it should integrate with the messaging menu
like in the bug I reported
so that the envelope turns green when you have rep
00:32
touche
like all the other apps you get feedback from
yeah that would be cool
But that would take even more recoding :(
That needs to be a bug for message-indicator team :P
hey I filed the m-i integration bug like months ago. :p
@GeorgeEdison the trick is to make someone else do it for you
00:37
I think it would be cool if stackapplet used the messaging menu for badges: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MessagingMenu So, imagine on the menu it would look like: > [icon] Ubuntu [ medal ] Biographer > [icon] StackOverflow [ medal ] Biographer So basically whatever site you've earned the badge on shows up. When you click on it it takes you to the site's profile page so you can check it out. Since they're earned and not very spammy I think this would work in the menu.
StackApplet
Wishlist / New
Eh... what we have works. Let's leave it 'till StackApplet 1.5
(Whenever that comes out.)
SA 1.5!
Well, why not?
@GeorgeEdison the icon works for me in notify-osd now, thanks!
@GeorgeEdison no i think it needs a total revamp now :P
I JUST rewrote it from scratch.
00:38
I was joking, take a chill
I know :P
so it's gone from gnome-panel > indicator-applet
now indicator-applet > messaging icon
then we'll make you go from messaging-icon > Chrome extension
There's already a Chrome extension.

Q: New Q! - Google Chrome Extension notifies you of new questions of interest

AdamScreenshot A new question notification in Chrome 6 in Windows XP A new question notification in Chrome 5 in Windows 7 The options page About I like to check StackOverflow for new questions to answer. I spend a lot of time refreshing the My Tags tab on the Unanswered page. Well, those days...

^----- That's what I use for StackApps alerts.
do you guys do a lot of programming?
@TheX Yeah - I do at least
00:49
cool... I took some programming when I was in college but I sucked lol
Java, Visual Basic, C++, Pascal...
cool, cool
it has been a long time though
DoR
DoR
@GeorgeEdison Why isn't there any icons in the StackApplet menu? ubuntuone.com/p/KTG
00:59
yay notify-osd works now! Thanks @GeorgeEdison
thanks for voting me down @MarcoCeppi
or maybe it was the other dude...
@DoR: There are no icons because of a bug with AppIndicators.
DoR
DoR
@GeorgeEdison What bug is that?
01:00
@TheX: I do a lot of programming.
@DoR: I'll try to find the link...
Here's my message highlighting the problem: lists.launchpad.net/ayatana-dev/msg00026.html
DoR
DoR
@GeorgeEdison Oh yes, I know of that bug. But Refresh, Preferences, About and Quit could all still have icons.
@GeorgeEdison cool
@MarcoCeppi so what sites can we migrate questions to?
@JorgeCastro None ATM
like, I think it would be nice to close this one because it's on SF

Q: auto bcc is not working when contain attachment in Postfix

saturngodI'm using postfix smtp and adding always_bcc. always_bcc = [email protected] It's working fine without attachment. When I add attachment, auto bcc is not working and admin didn't get email. How to fix that problem ?

ah ok
The only sites to get migration paths so far are WebApps, WebMasters, and Programmers
ah
If I had to guess we would eventually be able to send to SF for our more complicated server questions
Yes, I think to SF and SU will likely be the migration paths
and I suspect we'll be able to receive from SU
and send firefox-like questions to SU
01:19
I've got a question right now that's burning in my mind for the last few days
not sure if I want to ask here or SF
@DoR: But there's another problem: most GTK themes by default disable icons in menus.
You have to explicitly enable them.
So they wouldn't show up anyway.
DoR
DoR
GTK themes don't enable or disable whether or not to show icons.
That's a gconf setting
@DoR there's a slight performance hit on encrypted homes that you should probably mention to the guy, but it's not so noticeable on modern hardware
But I read somewhere that it was disabled on a per-theme basis.
01:22
but if he has some old laptop or something ...
@DoR unfortunately I can't find documentation on that right now. :-/
:5988 It's logical though. The overhead of having to decrypt the disk and all
DoR
DoR
@GeorgeEdison I have never heard that, I do remember a brew ha-ha when Ubuntu disabled most icons by default
Either way, if you add icons they will always respect a users settings
:5987 I noted that in this answer:

A: When installing I'm given the option of encrypting my home folder -- what does this do?

Marco CeppiSimply Encrypting your home folder doesn't actually make your computer more secure - it simply makes all the files and folders in your home folder more secure from unauthorized viewing. Your computer is still "vulnerable" in a security standpoint - but it becomes very difficult for your conten...

DoR
DoR
@JorgeCastro A lot of things can make a computer run slower, so I don't think you would be using a computer and somehow conclude that the home folder was encrypted.
@MarcoCeppi oooh nice!
@DoR yeah I was just saying that some people might not like the tradeoff
01:28
what is it with all the peeps asking about the screen casting software>
?
I had it for a while and didn't bother turning it on the next time I reinstalled my laptop
poolie
Hi Jorge! askubuntu seems to be going really well...
DoR
DoR
NullUserException is obviously an FBI agent. They lose laptops all the time xD
:6001 haha :P
BTW @poolie You posted the 6,000th message on this sites chat software
can you encrypt you home directory after installing ubuntu?
01:32
@TheX I believe so
It's encrypting the partition IIRC
so if home is on root then you can create an ecryptfs partition and sync your home folder on to it
Someone chose my answer...
DoR
DoR
@TheX I guess that works on Linux then?
I guess so...
DoR
DoR
I'm going to have to try that sometime
I am going to do it now, just out of curiosity...
No wallpaper option
01:50
hi @poolie it's going great!
I need a new picture...
You do.
:O Oh no!!!!!!!!
*&^% no!
Totally kidding...
999 users for StackApplet... one more to go!
sweet
So I changed my gravatar how long till i see it change?
02:01
Cached - it'll likely show up in an hour or two
okay.
I Just found a sweet tool
aww, no one boxing for packages.ubuntu yet
one of my former students wrote drapes
it's unfortunately unmaintained
@JorgeCastro You're a professor?
Decio Lira
hi all
02:03
Hello @DecioLira!
@JorgeCastro it is in the repos
@MarcoCeppi no I was staff at an .edu and he was whining about the unix labs sucking
so I hired him
@TheX yeah, it works, it's just not being updated, which is sad, it could be so awesome
ahh
poolie
:6035 take that! :)
what was I doing?
@JorgeCastro what uni did you work at?
02:09
I'm also digging Getting things GNOME!
:6023 Press either Ctrl+F5 or Shift+F5 and you should see your new icon
@MarcoCeppi it is there
@MarcoCeppi just took a while
02:23
my google chrome broke lol
mine is too
that was odd
Chrome just dissapeared
like it is not even installed
someone down voted me
@TheX it happens
I've been down voted quite a few times
I just can't understand why :=P I am such a smart and good looking guy :-P
Decio Lira
the vote is in the eye of the beholder I guess :-)
02:39
so how do you become a moderator?
The current moderator team was selected by the SO team to get the site through the beta
There will be public community elections in the next few weeks where the community can nominate and elect moderators
we'll probably select between 4-6 moderators to carry us through the next year before there is another election
Though the last statement is speculation based on the trilogy sites process cycle
I see
I was just curious...
not a problem :)
you spend a lot of time here then? what do you do for a living?
I'm a linux system administrator and lead developer
02:43
for a corporation?
For a company yes
Cool...
It's definitely fun
I work IT for a school District... mostly Windows shop
But I love playing/working with Linux...
DoR
DoR
Haha wow, a -1 accepted answer.
02:46
@DoR Where - that's pretty unique on this site?
thanks to me
it was my answer that went -1

It always annoys me when someone accepts an answer and doesn't upvote it.
Well @TheX did get 15 rep from it being accepted
but the OP could have made it 25
02:48
now it is -2
@TheX I gave you an upvote...but I hit the wrong arrow - it's fixed now
lol nice
but I like @DoR's answer too
@MarcoCeppi yeah iit probably actually works unlike mine
Decio Lira
so, I made a little question
Decio Lira

Q: How to start an app with "Always On Top" set?

Decio LiraThere are a couple of applications that I find myself marking as "Always on Top" every time I use them, so I wonder if there is a way to automatically set them as so, whatever way I start them (menu, shell, gnome-do)?

Decio Lira
but i'm not sure how to tag it
Decio Lira
ideas?
Decio Lira
just put an "applications" to have something
[window-setting] ? I'm not sure that's a tough one
yeah it is
Decio Lira
02:52
@txwikinger added a "gnome" tag.
Decio Lira
nice.
Decio Lira
wow, 2 upvotes in under a minute
Decio Lira
I guess it's not as silly as I though
JanC
it's a window-manager question I'd say...
Decio Lira
guess so
Decio Lira
02:55
* thought
JanC
I added that as a tag :)
@DecioLira You can edit your posts in this chat :)
Decio Lira
:-) thanks
yes, yes you can... I still can't upload though...
DoR
DoR
I can confirm that my answer actually works, lol. Playing a movie as your wallpaper is pretty cool!
03:00
that's a crazy idea. I never see my background though - except through my semi-transparent terminal window
this is my wallpaper though
DoR
DoR
Is LibreOffice any different from OOo right now?
@DoR not sure installing Beta2 right now, Beta 1 seemed to be all graphical
lol they think i am a scholar...
JanC
LibreOffice is OOo 3.3beta + Novell patches (most of these were already used by Ubuntu anyway)
JanC
and different branding, I guess
Decio Lira
03:32
well, time for bad
Decio Lira
bed* gee...

DoR
DoR
@DecioLira hit the up arrow to edit your comment

Q: How to make money from/in Ubuntu/Linux?

Dante AshtonHey all. I'm a student right now, and later in life I'd like to get really involved in the Linux ecosystem. Mornin', y'all. Say, does the askubuntu logo at the bottom-right look squashed to anyone else?
:6145 Of this chat?
mac9416
@MarcoCeppi, yep. Above those three links.
@mac9416 it does look a bit sqaushed yes
13:46
looks okay to me
mac9416
Hmm, lemme get a screenie. (Gee, you're fast at that.)
:6152 hehe gotta be to get a complete and whole answer :P
mac9416
That does look quite ugly. What browser are you using?
13:49
I'm using chromium on 10.04.
mac9416
FF 3.6.3
Nooooo! I refreshed my browser and it made it ugly !
firefox here...
mac9416
Hope I didn't do that. XD
That should probably be a bug
13:50
@mac9416 way to go...
mac9416
Where can it be reported?
meta.askubuntu.com
or in the chat feedback room
Though it would be better to put it on meta, then just paste the link to the meta post in the chat feedback room
This may be a design changed that rolled out yesterday
mac9416
Good idea.
I know they did some changes to chat yesterday to fix the API - there may have also been a design update to take care of other desgin bugs too which could have inadvertently broke that CSS
CSS is a pain in tthe rear

Q: Logo Squashed in Chat

mac9416When I signed into chat today, the logo at the bottom-right looks like this. Marco Ceppi commented on it: I know they did some changes to chat yesterday to fix the API - there may have also been a design update to take care of other desgin bugs too which could have inadvertently broke that...

mac9416
Did my good deed for the day. Going AFK now. Y'all be good. :-)
heading into the office
I need to clean my desk, again
@MarcoCeppi any word on the apt thing?
@MarcoCeppi and also, I finally have votes left over right now
normally lately I've been using them right away when the deadline passes
14:12
there we go, that is better
this fred.bear is like my favorite kind of user.

hey guys, need help here :)

Q: Can Dwarf Fortress be run in console mode?

Alex FeinmanI don't want to start up an X server at all, I just want to play on a text console. Is this possible?

@TheX you don't need things like "on ubuntu" in your questions
we know you're on ubuntu, you're on askubuntu
:)
@JorgeCastro yeah I guess that is a pretty safe assumption to make... lol
14:23
it's ok, one more edit on my way to a gold badge!
lol
@TheX also, add if you need voice only, or voice/video would help.
just need the instant messaging portion

1 hour later…
@MarcoCeppi you broke the one hour oarth of silence...

@txwikinger Yeah - but Robert didn't really comment on it and Jeff wasn't there. So it'll wait

:6209 you mean the person who copy/pasted from the wiki without mentioning his/her source? ;)
anyone ever hear of a .tag file?
:6212 Which question? I've just been searching for questions with "hi" or "hello" and editing them to make them more formalized questions. Typically users with greetings have posts that need improvement - not to mention it's kind of frowned upon in the SE tool
JanC
I mean the long answer to kernel build question :)
Ah, It looked good at least :P
I'm thinking about closing this question
Any nay sayers? IMO too localized and doesn't off much value

Q: Server on Atom D410?

maheshI am new to ubuntu (I am old time windows user and now want to shift my box). I want to setup my new dev box. I have selected following config for the PC Processes - Atom D410, 1.6 Ghz, (512K cache) RAM - 2 GB (667Mhz FSB) HDD - 250 GB (7200 rpm) Is that ok to run Ubuntu server or should I ...

nay
actually I don't care I just wanted to say "nay"
16:23
It feels okay as a one off, but you wouldn't want lots
@MarcoCeppi maybe let it ride for a little longer?
Perhaps if it was retitled
atom servers are actually pretty interesting
"Dev Server Specs" or something
I would get one if my home one died
16:24
:6225 Are they? Could this question be more atom-centric?
I've just noticed a lot of "Well my setup is..." answers - feels kind of wrong
yeah true
not sure, in general I am not finding community-wiki questions very good
I don't feel strongly one way or the other
I don't think this is a community wiki-able question. First (and I don't have the knowledge) are Atom servers this special server?
JanC
it's more a question of "will this modern low-end hardware be fast enough for a simple website with 1 user?" and the answer is always yes :P
:6234 yeah :P
:6234 Thats what I'm saying - I don't think this question really offers that much merit (at least not in it's current form)
16:31
I saw close it, it should be a forum thread
16:42
Is virtuoso-opensource just OpenVZ?
nevermind. I was thinking virtuozzo

@MarcoCeppi is it possible to preload an "Ask a question" link with a tag?
so for example
I want to be able to put on my team page "Got a question? Ask us!" and then link to askubuntu.com but have it so that the question will be tagged "community"
18:44
@JorgeCastro I don't think so - interesting idea though
You can even do this

@MarcoCeppi cool!

these kinds of questions
