Paleontology

Proposed Q&A site for paleontologists, other experts in natural history, and anyone who is passionate about the study of ancient life.

Currently in defintion.

So @JorgeCastro Mild mannered Canonical worker by day. Indiana Jones! by night?
I tweeted it - I warn you though, most people I know cant tell a Herrerasaurus from a Marasuchus - ha!
22:34
haha
awesome
(for the record neither can I)
I just emailed the dude from the discovery channel dino shows, let's see how this works out
sweet!
..suchus indicates a kind of crocodile iirc?
I just looked at the wikipedia page
Dinosaurs are a diverse group of animals that were the dominant terrestrial vertebrates for over 160 million years, from the late Triassic period (about 230 million years ago) until the end of the Cretaceous (about 65 million years ago). The extinction of most dinosaur species occurred during the Cretaceous–Tertiary extinction event. The fossil record indicates that birds evolved from theropod dinosaurs during the Jurassic period. Some of them survived the Cretaceous–Tertiary extinction event, including the ancestors of all modern birds. Consequently, in modern classif...
and found two dino-sary names
Anyways - I do have a lot of paleontology-like questions, and a lot of off-topic examples too
nathwill
22:42
doh
nathwill
@JorgeCastro, you get to test out the NFS-mount/unmount script yet?
@nathwill You can edit your messages in this interface - so autocomplete problems solved!
nathwill
@MarcoCeppi... wow... that's kinda cool!
You can either press the Up Arrow on the keyboard or click the down arrow next to the message and choose Edit
JanC
:6264 seeing 51 makes me thirsty...
22:45
Web Chat: +1 IRC: 0 :P
JanC
:6287 now if this @#€$£µ%ù?! thing would support tab-completion :P
It does for names! But if there are like 12 people with the first 3 letters then you'll have to choose from the list :P
JanC
it does not, I always end up on the "send" button when I press tab...
Works for me in Firefox and Chrome
JanC
oh, you need @ first
JanC
22:50
sigh
JanC
this works better in IRC :P
Hello @JanC!
I made a video
JanC
on many keyboards you need 2 hands to type "@"!
Really? I can get it with left shift and 2
but I've got big fat fingers
JanC
22:52
it's AltGr+2 here
JanC
well, could just work with one hand, but not really comfortable :)
Ah, international keyboards
JanC
and not everybody
@JanC could put it in here
JanC
most people in the world use non-US keyboards you know ;)
JanC
and it's not really a bug, just less convenient than IRC
Well the aim of this chat is to be better than IRC
JanC
also, I can't log here, so I can't grep afterwards :P
You have a search at the top right
It's called web-grep :P
JanC
that's not the same as a local log!
22:56
It's always available though - even when you're not in the room. Having a persistent chat is nice for once
JanC
I can see some advantages of this web thing, but it won't replace IRC
Yay YouTube screwed up my screencast
JanC
LOL
:6318 Not for general chitchat - but one day. First we need to DESTROY THE FORUMS
JanC
not even for that
22:58
Then we'll DESTORY IRC - just take out all of freenode
Ah - yes. I think they're going to make a way to "Acknowledge all" like pressing Esc or something
JanC
I mean, hard to miss a @JanC while I'm typing
JanC
and thus looking
It works well for me since I walk away from my desk all the time to put out fires

JanC
yeah yeah, I only have 300 browser tabs open already... :P
They do actually listen to feedback. I've gotten the SO team to make a few improvements for our version of the chat. Best Windows team I've ever seen
It almost makes me want to become a Windows Stack developer to hopefully one day joint the SO team
JanC
23:10
so, is there a way to copy-paste from here to there? :P
23:25
Yes
You can link the perma link or book mark a conversation
there's also apparently a way to move messages I just don't know how to do it yet
JanC
I can only permalink 1 line?
yeah - if you want multiple you have to book mark a converstaion
Room -> Bookmark Conversation
JanC
sigh
Can you move messages in IRC :p
BTW: There is a way, I have yet to discover how though
JanC
yes, by copy/paste (either into the channel for short ones, or on a pastebin otherwise)
23:29
Nono, I mean within this chat system
JanC
I meant on IRC :P
Oh, haha. Well you could copy and paste here too :P
JanC
which looks like this: pastebin.com/d4zvzcaQ
JanC
pretty unreaable IMO :P

Better looking!

23:31
plain text: 1 / web: 0
Retains formatting, timing, users, everything
Bookmarking Web Chat: 1 Bookmarking IRC: frail :P
JanC
so how is that supposed to work?
At the top right Click Room. Then Create new bookmark. Click on the start of the bookmark, then the last message in the bookmark. Give it a name and save it
You can then paste it anywhere in this chat system. Even chat on other SE sites. Or a website, blog, forum, even IRC! :P
JanC
bah, why doesn't selecting by mouse/keyboard work?
JanC
and I can't leave useless stuff out?
JanC
23:40
anyway, it will be able to replace IRC when it can handle #ubuntu traffic on release day :)
@JanC I found how to move messages
JanC
with 1800 users or so
I think this can handle that - though I'm not sure
What messages would you like moved?
Please copy and paste them for me :P
JanC
I was thinking about copying, but I guess it's more useful to make a list and post that one day :)
I just moved them. Learning about new features everyday
JanC
23:42
oh, and this chat seems to have issues already with 30 users...
JanC
lag
JanC
refresh taking seconds
JanC
stuff like that
JanC
it's still beta of course :)
23:44
Not bad so far
JanC
it's slow by definition, there must be about 5x overhead compared to a simple line protocol like IRC ;)
JanC
at least
JanC
and probably polling-based?
I honestly don't know
JanC
it makes me think about that google thing :)
23:49
Google Instant? That thing drives me nuts
DoR
DoR
I love google instant
JanC
"wave" or something like that?
Well I also hate the Google Background thing. I'm a big minimalist - one of the reasons I first started using Google and despise iGoogle
Ohh, Google Wave - that was awesome. We used it at work all the time
DoR
DoR
I still don't know what google wave is, even though I have used it. xD
Coordinating troubleshooting on servers between myself and the hardware team - keep running notes on customer resource abuse issues - etc
DoR
DoR
23:53
Google Wave should have been integrated with Gmail
JanC
LOL
It's kind of a hybrid between google talk and gmail - only way more over-hyped
JanC
I'd rather uses OE than gmail, it's less broken :P
JanC
same about exchange vs. google IMAP server
JanC
exchange IMAP vs. google IMAP
23:55
I'm forced to use MAPI/Exchange '07 and Evolution here. It's what I get for being a Linux System Admin in a company that's primarily a windows shop
JanC
@MarcoCeppi: you admin the postfix server that guards the exchange servers from the evil internets?
JanC
(doens't help to read mail of course)
No, I spear head the Linux Initative here. The mail servers and other windows servers are outsourced to the worlds worst IT shop. It's the reason I'm here! However, email migration and infrastructure migration is at the bottom of the list to complete.
I fear the evil internet is still out there, haxin' my mails
JanC
they should enable IMAP for you, exchange IMAP is okay nowadays (compared to gmail evilness with hiding your own mails to mailing lists etc.)
