Q: Please don't just vote posts up because you feel sorry for them getting voted down

Mark KirbyPlease don't just vote bad posts up because you feel sorry for people who got voted down, it completely undermines the point of voting and wastes other peoples votes. Today I voted this post down, it is bad, there is no way anyone can think it is good. It is vague, off topic, shows a lack of res...

2
I do that :o
@JamesTobin bad practice. Use discretion when voting for posts
I do use a little of it.. sometimes though I think it is a noob who is really doing his best and isnt neccesary to have voted down
Posts are unnecessarily downvoted but that is not a good reason to upvote them :)
oh ok
@Zanna what happens to a person if his/her post is downvoted?
09:13
they feel sad
lol
doesnt take away reputation?
it does, but not if they are a new user
you can never have less than 1
only -2
so if someone is unnecesarily downvoted and they dont have a lot of points they dont get privileges as soon and it isnt their fault.. shouldnt I help lol
09:15
upvote if you think a post is good, and that's it
oh kay exclamational point
voting isn't personal... it's for the site's quality
if you're thinking "oh I wanna give this person points" that's nice, but not helpful for the overall glory of AU. It's all about the content...
oh ok so if I think a question is good but it's downvoted I can upvote based on content even if I saw a similar one with a lot of votes would not bother even though I liked it?
09:20
yeah absolutely
oh ok then :) that's good
oh I misread...
ah dang
if it has a lot of votes and you like it, then go ahead and upvote it
why not?
yes I may as well but thats not the point
sometimes I am in a rush lol;
I am sometimes very fast when using computer
09:22
you mean upvoting takes too long ?? 0.o
lol I just dont even think about. Like if I pull up a linux command answer from a termminal and I am russhin no longer English hahaha and i wanna just really quick copy it and paste it into my darned terminal and move allong lol
guess it doesnt take long but you should see me sometimes lol
I am qb64 programmer, a language based on old DOS qbasic
the shell function lets me run anything
If I am not on qb64 I am on qbasic on my DOS 6.00
I have to go now, see you later @zanna ;)

Q: Why there are so many unanswered network-wifi related questions?

luchonachoI am surprised by the amount of wifi-network-related questions without an answer. If you look below, combined they amount for almost as much as 14.04 tags alone! Is people less willing to help on those questions? Are solutions specific to each particular case? Is that hardware the most pro...

2
10:45
@AskUbuntuMeta very good question
the answer is obvious... many people have problems with networking, because of the stupid companies who make networking hardware and don't pay people to write Linux drivers, the problems are device-specific, and most of us can only answer questions that relate to our own devices
11:21
the partition question is a dup i guess?
I duped it? or was there another?
another one. you edited
oh yeah
I wrote an answer, then thought i can be a dup.
deleted then
meh, I would undelete... OP doesn't seem to think it is a dupe
you know, I'm a bit wary of marking everything a dupe... I'm not sure i agree that it's always better if everything is in one place and answers are as generic as possible... sometimes information is more accessible in multiple places and presented in different ways
11:30
agreed
in this case, he has an lvm2 partition. don't know if these are same as unallocated space
Funny. The line about emacs cracked me up.
Unfor-git-able
lol

user136984
Does anyone know if there is some sort of GNOME roadmap?
first hit on google wiki.gnome.org/RoadMap
user136984
11:50
@edwinksl: Ah, well, it's not exactly very helpful... It just gives previous RoadMaps, not what's planned for 3.22 and how it's going, that's what I want to know.
user136984
It's fine, I found the right page though. They seem to be doing a complete redesign for the gnome-control-center, it's going to look really nice and nothing like the unity-control-center which is what it currently looks like! :)
where is the right page?
user136984
@edwinksl: This one.

unclear why installing a os that is targeted by WAY MORE viruses helps rofl
"You have a virus problem on a Linux system so let's install Windows"... um...
3
yellow is blue and I am a frog
hahaha
also i feel bad for OP's sister who got conned by the "technician"
Maybe his OS is really Windows pretending to be Linux Mint.
12:24
yeah me too... some 'technician'
remove a virus by installing a virus that is m$, got it
zakly
i suspect many shops get a commission for installing windows
Hold up "In the end the technician installed Windows 7" the OP just went from good to worst. :O
i mean, i respect people's freedom to choose their own OS
but installing windows to avoid viruses is stupidity of the highest order
12:38
I agree surely ulterior motives must be at the root of such foolery
I might install Ubuntu for my Mum this weekend :)
she asked you to do it?
yeah a while ago
she must be intrigued by the "hacking things" you do every day
i know i would be if i didn't know what is going on
12:51
yeah totally, she is like "what is this nut you are on about?"
does she have a broadcom card
hehe good question...
gotta go get train! x

user136984
Why on earth is YouTube recommending me the Google Chrome channel with strange videos like this?
user136984
:D
user136984
I don't like cats and I don't like Google Chrome! :D
user136984
Well, I don't have anything hugely against cats, I'm just more of a dog person, though I will stop for cuddles if one is available. :P
13:12
maybe google has data showing a correlation between people liking hamsters and cats :P
user136984
Hmm...
user136984
Did you find my Beasty Basil YouTube video by the way? It's really cute, if you like fat fluffy hamsters that is... :D
dude you have a TON of hamster videos
i only watched the first one
user136984
I have 3 real good ones, the first one I ever uploaded, the one with the frontflip, and my latest one with Beasty Basil.
user136984
And I really don't know why I am watching that strange cat video right now... :D
13:15
"beasty basil" is quite the name for a hamster
user136984
Well, if you look at the video, you'll see why... :P
user136984
No no no, no more of that cat video! It's actually rather creepy! :D
user136984
That's one scary cat... :D
why is beasty basil so fat lmao
looks like you overfed it
user136984
No, he just met the other hamster Toto, he was really small back then and called "Baby Basil". :D
user136984
13:19
Toto sort of attacked him and he realised how big and bad the world he lived in really was, so he decided to industrially militarise and becoming the fattest and toughest hamster of all time! >:D
user136984
He really was such a tame sweet little thing, but now he's big and nippy. Actually a lot of what you see is muscle and not fat.
13:35
good morning!!
user136984
Howdy there! ;)
user136984
@A.B.: Oh! You're back! :)
user136984
How are you?

A: How do we get more questions asked in our private beta?

Henry WH Hack v2.0My suggestion will be advertisements the community can hold an ad competition and the winner or winners (the person/persons with the best ad) will get there ad placed on the other Stack Exchange sites. (To break it down: Just legally advertise the site on other SE sites.)

Wow I thought I was going to be down voted! :)
13 hours latter and my edit is still pending: i2p.stackexchange.com/review/suggested-edits/56? :(
After renaming evolution folders name in /usr/lib I finally have managed to reduce the memory consumption of MATE under 1GB.

hi @jeremy
@dino hi
nice mountains you got there.
lol thank you
@dino when are you getting a new picture
15:28
@jeremy The kind of mountains that people would claim to have made it themselves
don't take my profile pic -.-
@edwinksl Good question
@jeremy You maked this? I maked this.
haha oh boy
15:29
@jeremy lol don't worry. You are the only person to remind me of that person.
haha that was so weird
wait what?
that person
oh yes, yes it was.
the whole endeavor
15:32
yep. How is life these days?
brought me to debian
just spent a few days trying to install a broadcom driver on debian
lol must have been fun.
f broadcom and their drivers
all i had to do was update my kernel
and it works
there was a poor soul fighting with broadcom just last week.
haha
networks card issue?
15:35
I think so
0
A: WiFi not working with Broadcom 43ba driver

jeremyThe notes for the chip BCM43602 say: "Supported in 3.17+". You probably have an older kernel. Check by running: uname -r Update your kernel to >= 3.17 and everything will work properly.

@jeremy upvoted for your efforts at dealing with the broadcom monster
@edwinksl thank you
@jeremy easy peasy after all... upvoted
yep, after a few days
haha
@zanna read under "I haven't done the step that reads" is that correct?
any ideas why E: Package 'google-chrome-stable' has no installation candidate?
15:59
isn't the standard way to install google chrome to download the deb from google and then do dpkg -i?
i've tried
let me tell you what it says
 google-chrome-stable depends on libappindicator1; however:
  Package libappindicator1 is not installed.
are you on debian?
and libappindicator1 has no installation candidate when i try to apt-get install it
yeah @jeremy I figure you got that right - it's not the sdio driver in your case
i am on debian. i changed my sources.list, that might be the issue?
@Zanna okay good
16:01
sounds like sources.list issue yeah... what did you do?
deb http.debian.net/debian jessie-backports main non-free
deb-src http.debian.net/debian jessie-backports main non-free

deb httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie-updates main contrib non-free
deb-src httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie-updates main contrib non-free

deb security.debian.org jessie/updates main contrib non-free
deb-src security.debian.org jessie/updates main contrib non-free
i needed backports to update linux kernel
so you just added stuff, not take anything away?
oh you had to...
i think i copied from wiki.debian.org/SourcesList
under "If you also want the contrib and non-free components, add contrib non-free after main:"
but changed the first one to backports
16:09
guess you're missing the... non backports one then
so you are still missing
deb httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie main contrib non-free
deb-src httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie main contrib non-free
which is the main repo for, well, most packages that you need
this ^
do i add it under the backports?
order doesn't matter
to back up a bit, i am actually curious how you added backports
because according to backports.debian.org/Instructions/#index2h2, you should have added something different
16:13
sorry I'm at home haha getting told off for being 'in a chat room'
@edwinksl hm
deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie main contrib non-free
deb-src http://httpredir.debian.org/debian jessie main contrib non-free
i am guessing it doesn't matter
i'm still getting the same thing
libappindicator1 issue
did you sudo apt-get update
yes
16:17
it is there though
ah, i got it
apt-get install -f
that's fine too. i thought you wanted to install libappindicator first before installing chrome
that's how it had to happen b/c of libappindicator1's dependencies
or something
magic haha so many posts on AU like "apt install -f didn't work"
@Zanna and in these cases, every system is broken in its own unique way that it takes a lot of time to figure out what is happening
16:21
yeah >_<
i wonder what people did to make apt fail to resolve dependencies
i install a ton of stuff and have yet to perform the apt install -f magic
same
nice
maybe we're just lucky
so i can't really help those folks since i actually have zero exp with it
16:23
or maybe it's cause we respect the snakes haha
@SmokeDetector clever
snake haters/deleters/removers need to be educated
is that spam?
yeah nope.
Looks legit.
went from -2 to +1, magic
16:28
I looked and thought it seemed reasonable
doesn't look like spam but also rather unclear :/
hahahahahaahaha
dat osception
checks dictionary.com ... finds nothing ... laughs politely
someone in reddit argued it is more accurate to call it oscursion
16:40
that's interesting, what is the argument? a mathematical argument?
it is reddit, you can hardly expect that
hahaha
but i think it is a great question that someone can answer using sound arguments
but which SE site would that be
that's a good question... ask it on meta SE
that is a wild place
16:44
indeed... we inhabit a nice sheltered corner
SO and MSE are harsh environments
(is it just me, or is anyone else unenlightened by the apple - answer analogy? I don't get anything out of that at all!)
Oh, it's the weekend.
@Zanna which one is that?
your answer is in another castle is one place that has it... meta.stackexchange.com/questions/225370/…
Here is is by itself i.sstatic.net/vAUaw.png (I don't wanna make a big box)
16:50
What's not clear about it?
When you say oranges when the answer should have been apples, then it is NAA.
well none of those are SE answers, even the shiny healthy one... is an apple. and not an answer.
When you a picture showing where to find the apples instead of the apple itself, it is link only.
aaaah OK, that helps
When you can barely tell if it is even an apple or anything for that matter, then it is low quality.
this is worth remembering
If I ask you for an apple that can be made into a pie while maintaining a complex flavor and holding its shape... And you give me a Red Delicious... That's a wrong answer, @Marti. If you give me an orange, you're not even wrong; you haven't answered at all. We can rank every apple on earth according to its suitability for an apple pie, but there is no useful score for an orange when it comes to this purpose. Similarly, no amount of downvoting will turn "I have this problem too, halp?" into even a wrong answer. — Shog9 ♦ Feb 23 at 18:10
16:53
When the apple is not wholesome as it should be to be a complete answer, then it is partial answer.
@edwinksl Aaarghh
approve this askubuntu.com/questions/814351/… anyone please
Happy Saturday for those who are still in it :D
hi
what's special about this saturday?
Saturday for another 1.5 hours
16:54
same here
Saturday is not a weekday.
August 20: St. Stephen's Day in Hungary
It's a weekend day.
oh. i got it
Let's all move to Hungary \o/
16:56
@Anwar I upvoted that already
@edwinksl nicely caught haha
well wait ...
I'm saying to approve the edit on heemayl's post @Zanna
@Zanna i got that from wikipedia. i love that particular section on wikipedia's frontpage
August 20, 14 – The adopted son of Roman emperor Augustus Agrippa Postumus, was executed by his guards while in exile under mysterious circumstances.

the highlighting hard to detect
anyway, my mistake
17:03
yeah I wish there was a view option with no highlighting
sorry Anwar, the link I followed just took me to the comment on your answer, so I was confused
it was a trick
I took the link from modal dialog!
what trick?
what snake? Oh..
17:09
haha who upvoted? no votes for snake killers!
Stefano posted a nice answer to one of those last week? we can dupe...
yeah that would probably work
although that question has been marked as a dupe
not sure what dupe target to pick here lol
I'd go for the one with the best answer
ok i am gonna to do it
17:24
I dunno why I'm hesitating haha don't wanna be the first to jump
nice extra comment
no worries fam i will take one for the team
Maybe Ubuntu should give you a popup on first login saying "by the way, if you hurt Python, Ubuntu will be FUBAR"
it indirectly says that by showing a HUGE list of things to be removed :P
it's kinda like EULA i guess; nobody reads wall of text
haha yeah I am familiar with it... I had a... gtk issue...
I always read EULAs everything I install software.
17:29
I have NEVER read a EULA...
@HenryWHHackv2.0 you read every single word? good for you
I don't read them if I recognize the license.
@HenryWHHackv2.0 I read the EULA of the first software I installed ever
If it's GPL, there's no need to re-read the GPL every time I install something.
I read part of one recently, and I was surprised to find a section "you acknowledge that this software is not intended for use in the manufacture of nuclear weapons"
17:30
uh oh @Zanna should we know what you are up to
It was an Android file browser... seemed superfluous to me...
It's not FOSS-compliant then.
It shouldn't have usage restrictions :D
Yes @NathanOsman quite right, as RMS explains...
That being said, if you are using a file manager to build nuclear weapons, there's something else wrong.
That was before I ditched my HTC One and got Fairphone 2 with completely free software (except the firmware blobs)
17:35
Windows is so bad my mouse stoped working after waking my computer from sleep. :(
:D
that used to happen to me in Ubuntu, tbf
had to modprobe something to fix it
@Zanna @NathanOsman "not intended for" is not a usage restriction.
More like a liability waiver.
yeah I agree @Seth
I expended an unreasonable amount of thought on it
17:55
"16.04 LTS (Xenophobic Xylophone)"?????????????????
i actually loled
wherezzat?
@Seth lawyer in the making?
@dino in this day and age everyone has to have a little lawyer in them :(

Q: 16.04 LTS upgrade issue and 64 bit architecture

Roland BurleyI was running 14.04 LTS (Trusty Tahr) and on a routine update was offered the opportunity to upgrade to 16.04 LTS (Xenophobic Xylophone) which ,for my sins, I decided to to do. I wish I hadn't as the massive amount of work I did getting Pepper flash to work instead of Shockwave has been undone an...

@Seth Correct. To be fair, however, I have seen EULAs that do expressly forbid that.
18:00
@NathanOsman I'm not surprised.
@NathanOsman I think iTunes comes in that list.
I am always amused at how people try to extend their beliefs into what people do with the stuff they make.
who pinged?

haha that post is sympathy-inducing... I like it

Q: Running tar cmd in wrong format, how to recover

znet98Trying to tar a file called report, but accidentally running wrong format ls -l -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 708 Aug 20 10:12 report /var/tmp$ tar czvf report report.tar.gz then ls -l -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 45 Aug 20 10:13 report how to recover the original file? Thanks

18:25
@UbuntuQuestionsonU&L I think it's gone my friend
rip report
yep
I had a go... it errors out unless the second argument is a real file
but if you specify some file... the second file is unaffected, the first argument turns into useless un-tar-able binary junk... but maybe there is a way to fix it!
Thanks for clarifying this for me @Anwar ! :) askubuntu.com/questions/814673/…
oh man Lee lost his gold? :'(
@Zanna you're welcome. but what was the confusion /
@dino i am surprised lin dan didn't even get a mdeal
@edwinksl equally surprising.
Lee vs Lin Dan should have been the final.
18:50
I am just really curious about Squashfs... @Anwar
But squash is not in Olympics.
@dino agree, that's the el classico of badminton
hahaha ^_^
@edwinksl the el classico
18:52
oh. the installation is just copying this filesystem into the real hard drive and then some configuration
@dino which is very surprising. squash should be in olympics
@edwinksl lol but if it was the final, we know who would have won it.
Yeah... I want to understand really well, so I know exactly how to manipulate it
@dino it would still be fun to watch two legends go at each other :P
now malaysia will probably have 0 gold medal
@edwinksl that rally towards the end in the semi final was top class
@edwinksl Lee broke their hearts
18:55
@dino i didn't watch this olympics :( but i watched london 2012 finals
oh dang
i might just watch the semis later though :P
even if it has 0 gold medals, Malaysia will still have... awesome biodiversity...
^lol random words of consolation
yeah, what was that..
MFW North Korea has more medals than India.
