What flavor of ubuntu?
Anonymous
Try something lighter, like Xubuntu. It is great. I run it at home on my main desktop, and as a VM on there.

night all
01:33
@Serg you here ?
02:18
@gansub yes, what's up ?
@NathanOsman congratz
@Serg thank you! What did I do?
Oh. You mean the medal.
Sorry, I though for a minute there I had done something and forgotten about it.
:)
Well, um . . . i have turned on korean input somehow . . . problem is i dunno how to turn it off
02:39
@Serg shift+space maybe
sorry,
super+space, not shift.
@Serg - I asked that as a question after installing matplotlib I get errors

Q: Matplotlib error with Ubuntu 16.04

gansubI have a Ubuntu 16.04 LTS instance and I am trying to run my old scripts that I developed on Ubuntu 14.04 with python3.5. I installed matplotlib and basemap using sudo apt-get install. These are the errors I get Traceback (most recent call last): File "contour.py", line 30, in <module> x,y = m(...

@Serg it looks like there are other dependencies other than matplotlib and basemap ?
but sudo apt-get should that figure that out right?
@gansub please wait , because I cannot figure out my text settings right now. I'm typing and copypasting this from terminal
@Seth well, yes, for default input method. I am trying to work on one answer, and the guy there uses uim, which is was i am using now. As you can see, I cannot even get started with uim myself , much less answer that damn question
looks like you need assign shortcut key before
sigh . . .there is a shortcut already. if only i knew what it was, because i randomly press it and then suddenly in korean
you are able to go in system settings ?
or try google translator with camera
02:56
@CodeX yeah. I actually installed a gui settings for uix. Apparently input switching is Meta+space
meta is supposed to be Alt . . . . Firefox just sometimes catches it, sometimes not
@gansub i am not familiar with matplotlib, but i think the code fails because of previous line. the two arguments you give have an error maybe ?
@Serg you mean because of numpy ?

Q: How do I change keyboards from the command line?

EyalHow I change keyboard layouts from the command-line? For example, I want to switch from English to Hebrew. I'm able to do it from lightdm with the little icon in the corner of my screen.

@Serg that line prints out just fine
@Seth Just a question, how do you want me to handle touchpad speed in the indicator ? I
@Serg I'm not worried about touchpad speed since it isn't affected by anything. it can stay constant.
03:01
Ok
03:18
@Rinzwind so remember that question about long description for directories ? Remember you said one could create a plugin for that ? Well , I sort of did that , askubuntu.com/a/813178/295286
Finally getting the hang of night shots
where is this
not that game again

Hey, I asked if you wanted the answer before
@Zacharee1 yer a professional fotografer , Harry
03:25

@Serg aye
@Zacharee1 may interest you in another icon request-o ?

@ƎpᴉʇʎXD Yes it does
yes it does
#zachpuns
03:32
@Zacharee1 so I am making an indicator for Seth, in fact it is done and is in working condition. The idea is , creating mouse speed profiles which we easily can access from drop down menu
@edwinksl wait for @Serg's
@Serg so different colors for different DPI?
In mine it is opposite
@ƎpᴉʇʎXD refresh?
03:34
@Zacharee1 No, I just want one static icon
really?
so, what?
Just in case anyone wants to try it out, github.com/SergKolo/mouse-profile-indicator
@Zacharee1 how about mouse icon with P letter in site it
@Serg shouldn't be hard

Something-something burning in my heart, Lyrics I don't know, so I'll sing whatever in this part. . . . . .
1
A: Minimum PC requirements to run latest Ubuntu?

Zacharee1Technically, there are system requirements, but I believe those are mostly a formality. There's nothing really I can find for 16.04, but I've seen recommendations for something close to the following (64-bit): 2-3GB RAM 6GB HDD space (this you'll actually need to follow, but I doubt there will ...

slow
@Serg There's a fire burning in my heart
It is just her in my heart
03:42
@Zacharee1 physically impossible , but yeah, that's part of the lyrics. I'm just being sassy here
@Serg I set fire to the rain, watched it burn as I touched your face
That makes tons of sense ^
2
Hello, its me
Lol
It was just like a movie, it was just like a song.... when we were young
She's like 27
YOLO, it's me
@Zacharee1 modern pop music, ladies and gentlemen, in all its lyrical glory
03:44
well it's not like you can understand them
nothing for lady gaga ?
I want your ugly
I want your disease
I want your everything
As long as it's free
@Zacharee1 Uh-huh.
Nah, Lady Gaga is at least produces music that is a bit more interesting than 90% of pop
I want your love and I want your revenge
you and me could write a bad romance
and thus, Twilight was born
thousand years
03:47
@Serg icon size?
darn it
It's "watched it pour"
and I knew that
@Zacharee1 Make it 16 x 16 and I'll adjust
Can I just give you 512x512?
easier to edit on my end
A few months old, but very accurate still.
painful to read
03:50
@Zacharee1 sure ^_^ whatever is good for ya
although 16x16 will be easier to construct...
Lol.
@NotKennyRogers I hope the next trend in music is talent.
3
xD
Well we do have Adele
@Serg ^
@Zacharee1 Now your photo dont render ever at all
@NathanOsman we're right next to a Telus building and yet I'm "roaming" on VZW just because it gives me 1 bar of LTE.
03:57
Lol.
@ƎpᴉʇʎXD well that's your problem I think
well I know that I'm not the only one
03:58
korean typing?!?
Looks nice
@Serg I like it!
@Serg maybe I should remove the staircasing
I'm going to be gone for a few days, then I will check it out.
@Zacharee1 so much blur
@Seth that's a 2MB version of a 20MB original, so yes
03:59
ah
y u no use flickr
@Seth that's the SE profile pic
wondering what happened to the mouse .. and what is that P
or google photos
If you come in my yard at night lookin’ for Pokemons, you’re goin’ to find a rare one. It’s called a Glockachu. Merica.
hahahahaha
@Zacharee1 I staircasing doesn't bother me that much. If you think it would look better, sure, let's do that. Also, do you think transparent background would be better ?
04:00
idk
let's try it
hmm
should I make it gray
and more muted?
why does the vertical line look off-center
04:07
because it is
Nah, let's stick with the one with white background
y u no center it
You center something in a 16px wide image
you cant question an artist :P
Because YOLO that's why
04:08
Try that
Man, I like this indicator
see what it looks like
i suppose you can make the line 2 px thick
eww
and it sort of is actually
there's a shadow
04:12
P needs to be brighter
red on black is hard to see
KOREAN TYPING?!?
@Zacharee1 lets try green
04:13
@ƎpᴉʇʎXD yes, korean. Didn't i tell you that already ?
Neon or muted?
or maybe no color?
Neon plz
04:14
Looks alright to me
@SmokeDetector has a caching service now?
@Serg yeah
lemme just try one more thing
blends a lot better IMO
but it's your indicator :p
maybe make it themeable?
If only I knew how . . .

Q: Problem connecting to Ethernet on my Linux

Viet LeI'm running Ubuntu 14.04. I need someone to tell me the steps I need to take to fix this issue... It's not my Internet problem because I'm able to wired in on my other laptop. So it's obviously something wrong with my Ubuntu laptop. It makes no sense that It was working perfectly fine yesterday...

@Serg you don't know how to allow people to swap the icon?
I find that hard to believe :p
@Zacharee1 you should start charging serg for the icons... maybe repz for iconz
@Zacharee1 nope, not yet though. Theming probably requires throwing icons into /usr/share/icons folder and I don't have valid reason for that, unless there's .deb file
@edwinksl well he's supposedly making my script for me
@Serg hmm.
oh is it for you xd
04:22
@edwinksl no, this one's for Seth
Mine is some complex shortcutter
@Zacharee1 yup, eventually will be making that script . . . the whole bunch of recent events kind of distracted me though
Mkay, I'm gonna go with with the green one
@Zacharee1 thank you once again. I will add credit to you in the script source
BBL, playing Wii U
05:03
well ew, found a bug in my cereal
@Serg when i type sudo apt-get build-dep python3-matplotlib it says you must pur URIs in your sources.list
so when i installed it yesterday i did it without build-dep
could that cause a problem i.e. the dependencies are not built into matplotlib?
05:21
@gansub I honestly don't know. I don't see why matplotlib would ask that, because sources.list is for apt , not for matplotlib. It would throw an error during installation
05:31

WHY ARE YOU GUYS TYPING IN ALL-CAPS AND ITALICS ?
무됴ㅐㅜㅎ
woo , i finally figured out how to type in korean
now , i should learn to actually type proper words
@Serg You actually wrote down the first 2 words of a TV programme.
05:53
@Serg For all you know you just called someone's mom a porcupine.
@JourneymanGeek well, google translate to the rescue !!!
I said, "anyong"
i was basically going for romanization of "hello" in krean , but meh, close enough
@Serg 요요요 what up my man
hmm. schroooms...
@_@
@edwinksl you know korean ? since when ?
mmm SBS
05:56
i learned the alphabet once upon a time
my korean vocab is non-existent though

Q: Two root accounts, what to do?

LulzsecI'm on Ubuntu 15.04 and today I've been reading an article about Linux security ; http://www.sevagas.com/?How-to-secure-Linux-users-26 Everything went good until the part of UID 0 Account Only root should have the UID 0. Another account with that UID is often synonymous to backdoor. Whe...

:D
here's a programme that translates "Fantastic Duo"
@ƎpᴉʇʎXD do you watch kbs
@edwinksl Nope, SBS

OH dear lord BACON
06:09
Nathan "Bacon" Osman will like it
sigh . . . I've no idea how to make my indicator menu update dynamically
i'm having bunch of warnings output in command line
BaconShare :P
06:48
@edwinksl :D
@Serg Is this the Python / AppIndicator one?
@NathanOsman yes. Basically I have a function that re-makes menu. But every time it does, it throws this error
How is it changing the menu?
(mouse-profile-indicator:23248): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_widget_get_parent: assertion 'GTK_IS_WIDGET (widget)' failed
@NathanOsman I'm calling function self.make_menu() each time
(Sidenote: GTK loves to throw useless warnings on the terminal. So much so that you can never tell if a message is serious or not.)
@Serg What does the body of that function look like?
Do you have this up on GitHub somewhere?
@NathanOsman give me a minute, i'll make a few changes and commit it
Here it is
Menu also flickers each time i update it, so that's probably bad approach
I'm probably gonna go with updating the indicator label instead
07:00
Traffic hijacking Linux flaw affects 80% of Android devices -- including Nougat betanews.com/2016/08/16/…
HA ! that's CVE 2016 5696
I've answered a question about it couple days ago
@NathanOsman any ideas ?
@Serg I see
07:23
:D
@Serg i found the answer !
@gansub congrats ! what was it ?
well i had a projection problem
once i got over it i was able to plot
i have a numpy question
i have an array of this shape - 1,1,23,21
i need to convert this to shape 23,21
i tried this np.reshape(array,23,21)
but it says total size of new array must be unchanged
@gansub use np.squeeze
@edwinksl - thanks ! that works !!!
the output looks weird
but it works !
i have to admit i am glad i am not dealing with compilation issues if i used Intel icc
nice to install everything using sudo apt-get install
07:32
Gtk sometimes reminds me of Windows . . . .its errors are as useful as Windows's
@Serg would you like to see my plot ?
@gansub em, sure. Not that I would understand what is it about :)
morning
still need to figure out the spacing and the resolution @Serg
Evening :)
07:39
howdy
howdy folks
were you able to see it ?
yeah , @gansub , looked complicated. No idea what that means though
contour heights plot
i am plotting heights of equal contour
sorry contour plot of equal heights
07:52
BaconShare: mmm
I've seen 1 of the permissions value in nmcli general permissions no
wondering how do I change it.
Mkay, i decided to nope-the-funk-out and just switch to updating label
@Zacharee1 @Seth new look and new feature. I decided to switch to using label that displays profile name beside the icon. If the current speed value is not equal to any profile, it will say N/A . That way you also can know when it's possible to use "Store current" option ( which is also linked to the middle click)
So . . . unless there's any other feature requests . . . I probably will tag it up and release . . . . and add to my linkedin
@Anwar good Ruby answer, but I would suggest you add check if the matched word is not equal to the initial word. That would make it looks exactly how OP wants it. See my python version or choroba's perl
08:21
@Serg lol so many languages used for that question
@edwinksl that's typical of a text processing language. Maybe someone should throw in java ? I did that once for AU
i might yolo and throw in matlab
08:33
eh, why not . . .non traditional text processing tool, but it does the job
@Serg he wanted if the string is found in the text, print first word and the string?
NIGHT EVEYONE
good night @ƎpᴉʇʎXD
@Anwar if you look at his sample file, the output shows that last entry is the only one there. So " if line has only one word, and that word is in list, only print that word "
oh. thanks. got it
08:38
mkay guys, im gonna be out too
I've meeting with a friend tomorrow, but goddam, i am not going to wake up on time

thank you for pointing that
Hello everybody ! :)

Lol , so I posted a picture of the 3 indicators that i wrote side by side on my wechat, and my buddy ( who works for Apple ) is like "No idea what that is, but looks cool." So I explain, those are indicators, kind of same thing as menulets on Macs. He's like "Cool sh*t , you are too smart for me". Lol . I love that guy

@Serg: Amazon is still confusing me... How do I find all the Wagakki Band albums?
user136984
Because I want to buy them but the search results just aren't very helpful, I wish they'd just give me a proper structured list...
@ParanoidPanda there are Wagakki band albums, but I they're costly. I would suggest you go to yesasia.com, that's where i got my live album
user136984
@Serg: Ok, I'll have a look there... Thanks! :)

@SmokeDetector: Ooh... New format/design! Looks nice! ;)
09:32
Uh , can anyone help me out with reverse DNS here ?
my servers can't return domain for askubuntu
I can find IPs just fine, but not domain
This morning, the production servers at work were down because of an electricity outage. This is the actual email we received from our provider. No joke:
> Dear Sir or Madam,

A general power failure due to a short circuit caused by the presence of a weasel in the transformer occurred on Wednesday August 17 at 05:30.

Our emergency response teams intervened and the power has been restored. However, if you note a persistent failure, please
contact the PCC at 34000.

We apologize for this inconvenience and thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Yours sincerely
We used to have bugs, now we have small mammals!

wtf weasel
ikr?
user136984

I think it's safe to assume that weasel got fried , eh ?
user136984
09:44
:(
@Serg Dunno, maybe it weaseled out of it.
@terdon well dammit, terdon, you stole my pun of the day
joking
Hey, dude, use it or lose it! :P
what the frick . . .My reverse dns is failing left and right
$ dig @8.8.8.8 -x 192.30.253.112 +short
No output
( That's github ip by the way )
I get no output for that either but have noticed no DNS issues
Remove +short
09:54
@terdon well, that's the whole point, i just want to grab the domain name, that's why i am using short
OK, but if it gives no output, that might not be the right option
Which domain name?
that ip address was given as result of nslookup github.com, but seems like actual sever has different domain name
ops.github.com
