the review close queue would be so awesome if it wouldn't show me stuff i already voted to close, which kinda makes it useless. i'm not opening tons of questions to check whether i can vote or not... :-/

While trying to upgrade ubuntu using an alternate iso will it always download stuff from the internet during the process? If so, then what is the point of the alternate iso?
Alternate ISO has text-based installer, which is useful when you can't run full installer. See ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/alternative-download#alternate
so when running the installer it will always try to download packages from the internet?
Yes, if updates are available and you have selected software, which is not present on alternate CD
I don't get the selected software part...?
Some packages are availble on alternate CD - so the installer will use them
But some packages are stored in repos only - so internet connection is required
However, packages might be updated in repo, so the installer will prefer downloading new versions of these packages
12:50
I've read on some sites that the alternate iso can be used to upgrade w/o network access...do we have to do anything special?
...other than remove the network cable... :)
No, network access is not required, unless you are trying to install packages, which are not available on this CD
But the installer will use internet connection, if it is available
You can also install packages, which are stored on disk / USB / local share etc.
can the installer be told not to do that?
because I've tried and it still does...
I guess through one of its steps it asks can it connect to the network...
13:08
Can I directly upgrade 10.04 to 11.10?
You should pass netcfg/disable_dhcp - this will disable network configuration using DHCP, so network will not be used during install
or simply, don't plug in the cable =)
yes, 10.04 can be upgraded to 11.10
Is 10.10 ubuntu a pre-release?
it is not LTS
jrg
jrg
@gcc you can't upgrade 10.04 directly to 11.10
@deostroll 10.10 -> 11.04 -> 11.10
jrg
jrg
13:22
Yeah
i'd suggest just doing a re-install of 11.10 over 10.04

You have the ability to make anything bloated - its just that PHP makes it really easy to bloat it beyond bloat.

Q: Instant messaging clients

AndriAre there any instant messaging clients with custom emoticons like on the Windows Live Messenger or do I have to use Wine for it? I've already tried Pidgin and the default Empathy clients. None have emoticons how I like them.

dupe. just need to find it
ipage isn't slow per se, their db servers are. The host itself is lame, they have outages and shit all the time.
15:17
@rlemon power users are just people who customize their systems. from changing settings to hacking...
say I have a large HTML file (~1000kb) it will take no time at all to download.. however retrieving even the smallest amount of data takes a while.. I first noticed this when I was building a hangman game and wanted to pass the 'answer' in as JSON so the user couldn't easily cheat
