Q: Resolution since installing 16.04 LTS

PeterBI asked this question yesterday but it has disappeared? Maybe I did something wrong ..... anyway: I installed 16.04 on Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo Mobile V5535 and ticked all the boxes re updates etc... Overwriting Vista. I now have a screen resolution of 640x800 and cannot navigate to RHS of scre...

11:35 AM
@terdon saw it :) and reinsertet the reference link

@Videonauth Oh, had I removed it? Dang! Thanks.

np :) for this were a community :)
btw got another nice answer badge as i was on my doctors appointment
just saw

Anyone who can edit this question to be readable should get +20 rep askubuntu.com/q/795940/530811

will do when i done my reviews

OP accepted my answer and then unaccepted it :( askubuntu.com/q/795889/530811
They have all right to.
Oh, shit,. I screwed up.
I thought they were using 14.04

@grooveplex done

Now I left them with an unstable, development version on god knows.... a production server?

of 16.10 :) but theres no easy ways back sadly except a new installation

@Videonauth Nuke It From Orbit is a good idea. The only 'production' servers I have of 16.10 are on an internal testing/lab environment heh
the only area of my network nagios doesn't touch :P

or leave it at 16.10 and upgrade from there till youre on the next LTS
but that leaves them with a couple of monts without updates

12:24 PM
Generate a password in one line: cat /dev/urandom | base64 | head -n 1 | cut -c1-16

@grooveplex Nice. Real Nice!

Thank you
All coreutils :)

@grooveplex What is the urandom file?

It contains random junk
It's, AFAIK, a secure source of randomness
And it doesn't block

coughs and drops a link

Q: EOL Notice: Wily Werewolf (15.10) will be EOL on July 28, 2016

Thomas W.This is a notice regarding releases of Ubuntu that will reach End of Life soon. The following versions of Ubuntu and derivatives will be officially end of life on July 28, 2016: Wily Werewolf (15.10). New questions regarding the above posted after the aforementioned date may need to be con...

the automatic feed poster'll post this anyways, I bet.

12:28 PM
@ThomasW. Been trying to upgrade to Xenial for a while now, getting stuck on backing up all my DATA xD

Use it everywhere:

`echo 'alias pw="cat /dev/urandom | base64 | head -n 1 | cut -c1-16"' >> ~/.bashrc`

@grooveplex Forgot how you'd enable that?

@blade19899 that I can't help with. I have to clonezilla my Linux partition anyways
so I can restore if the upgrade when the next point release for Xenial comes out dies and fails my system

@grooveplex What about head /dev/urandom -c 10 | base64 instead?

> source ~/.bashrc

12:34 PM
@ByteCommander That will print too many lines. You want something like head -c 10 /dev/urandom | base64 to avoid the UUoC

Hmm... Not really. That one produces always "==" as last two characters. Probably for the Line Feed char.

Ah, yes, good point.

@terdon UUoC? and your command is basically what I had.

@ByteCommander Useless use of cat and no, yours would print multiple lines.
No it wouldn't, sorry, I missed the -c 10.

Just the -c 10 after the file instead of before.

12:35 PM
Yep

And I did not make any cat cry.

This should do it: base64 /dev/urandom | head -c 16

@terdon Looks good, but can you tell me how base64 knows how many bytes of urandom to read? I would have expected that to read infinitely...
Does head kill the piped process as soon as it has everything it wants?

@ByteCommander It doesn't, the pipe handles that.

1:00 PM
Well what a new insanity from Brussels, now we got images on tobacco packages showing the results if smoking, I hereby want pictures of dead people caused by car accidents on cars, people who got disfigured from cosmetics on cosmetics articles, pictures of fat people on foodstuffs, drunken or dying people on alcohol bottles etc ....

1:38 PM
@ThomasW.: Thanks! ;-)

@Videonauth Heh. Sounds good. I'm actually in favor of showing such things on the packets. It might help stop people from starting. Just as long as I can still buy the damn things, put any images you like on them.
Hey @Fabby!

@terdon yeah im fine with the pictures to, but then please equality and not bashing on a minority
so if pictures, then pictures on anything showing the risks, or no pictures

@Videonauth na we cant let you die smoking ..

well fine with that too, but then put pictures everywhere
like i said only bashing on one product is as far it concerns germany against the constitution

everywhere ? like on milk bottles ?

1:51 PM
dying or dead people on car doors, fat people on milk bottles etc
everywhere
big and visible please
Like "Driving a car you risk getting into accidents, can cause injuries to you and your fellow people" and so on

"Health officials have known that more than 1 billion people around the world smoke and 5 million people die each year from tobacco-related illness, according to the World Health Organization. "

and how many people die from car accidents?
or from heart attacks because they are overfed
?

life is known to be fatal in all cases...

unlike drinking milk .. second hand smoking is also a cause of concern

how many people each year die from starvation?

1:55 PM
cars are becoming safer

@Videonauth Shall we also warn people from breathing because there might be toxins in the air?

@ByteCommander yep, sadly you cant put stickers on air ;)

for heart attack .. there has to be plenty of things to be banned .. and those things if taken in moderate level is not of that harm

@Fabby You're welcome. But don't ask the user for comments - < 50 rep means they can't. You can always drag them to chat though if you want :P

@CodeX there's the new name

2:01 PM
yeah finally updated
the sound of new message scared me xD

@ThomasW. I think the OP can always comment on answers to their question.
> Please note that you can always comment on your own posts, and any part of your questions. However, commenting on other people's posts is a privilege.

@CodeX BONG

@terdon Cool. That said, it still needed converted.

@Zacharee1 haha now I am getting use to it

Oh sure, I don't know what Fabby was thanking you for.

2:04 PM
@terdon and answers would be 'other people's posts'. perhaps time to test with unprivileged accounts?

@ThomasW. I assumed that "and any part of your questions" covered answers.

@terdon conversion of answer-as-comment-to-Fabby's-answer to comment on Fabby's answer.

it's true, you can comment on other user's answers to your question even if you have <50 rep

cool

Anyone watch C&H?

2:06 PM
@Zanna yes

@jokerdino I was answering, not asking... it would be really annoying if that were not the case for all concerned haha

I wanted to just say yes and then Zach came up with a question and I had to not reply to that.

heh

although sometimes it can make a mess askubuntu.com/a/795024/527764

2:10 PM
why does apt-get install make not ask for confirmation, where as installing something like python (apt-get install python) seeks our confirmation?

probably because it asks if you want to install the dependencies for python

seems like all are pro's here

python is a metapackage, pointing at a specific python versioned package , plus its dependencies
to install python you need to install all the dependencies, which are more than you instructed to install

22
Q: Why `sudo apt-get install XXXX` sometimes request confirmation, others not?

StraeJust for curiosity, sometimes while installing software throught apt-get install software_name the terminal prompt me for a confirmation "type Yes or No", but not allways. I dont mean the sudo password prompt, but the message "Will be downloaded and configrated XXX Kb, continue?" (or something s...

make is being installed on its own, so you either have the prereqs and dependencies for it already, and it's just being installed, or your apt is busted. See that question/answer Zanna just shared

2:13 PM
okay that made sense...

@deostroll You only get to confirm a second time, if there are dependencies to be installed, if your command only install this one particular package you have your confirmation given already by entering your passwords for the sudo command

smells like spam askubuntu.com/a/795996/15811 :P

spam smells good

fine Ill NAA it

meh, i'm just leaving it
do whatever :)

2:19 PM
Is it bad form for me to bump my question into chat for attention?

well if you not do it every day do it, once is ok IMHO

@user2943160 depends on why you do it ;-)
if you want us to make fun of you it is ALWAYS fine >:-D

Q: Chrome Remote Desktop access to Headless Ubuntu Server 16.04 Machine

user2943160I have a server running Ubuntu Server 16.04, started from stock installation with SSH server. @user2943160 you can always ask someone else to post it >:-D
Oh I would not install a deskop on a server.
@user2943160 see my comment. I believe you are approaching this wrong. Is the headless server an instance (google/aws)? or your own server?
I would assume you need a VPN to connect to the server. and then you can just use ssh/scp/sftp to copy files from and to the server.

@Zanna woman have their own Ubuntu server? >:-D

woah

@Rinzwind hahaha :P

Hey just asking! if you say "yes" I am fine with that >:)
I know of 2 women responsible for a server myself (and I have about 300 companies I help out with their systems).
1 of them calls me when the server starts bleeping
the other one closed the door to the server room when the power supply started beeping
just saying >:)
oh and as always: ALWAYS take my comments not as serious when I put a >:-D in it :+)
oh I scared you all away? >:-D

2:52 PM
One of the regulars in U&L is a sysadmin. Apparently, some customer called for tech support and couldn't accept that a woman could possibly be competent in this field and insisted he (because the customer must have been a man to do this) talk with a "real" techie. The ensuing conversation:
in /dev/chat, Dec 1 '15 at 12:38, by Jenny D
My colleague took over the call, and after that I only heard his side, which went:
"I don't know that."
"Sorry, I have no idea."
"Sorry, that's not something I work with."
"No, sorry, no idea."
*incoherent yelling*
"Well, you were on the phone with the right person a while back, but you didn't want to talk to her, and now I don't think she wants to talk with you!"
The customer hung up.
Serves the idiot right.

LOL

haha no I'm just trying to squeeze some good snark out of my brain, but it's not happening right now
hahaha!!

Oh, yeah, here's the first bit:
in /dev/chat, Dec 1 '15 at 12:37, by Jenny D
"Hello, sysadmin Jenny speaking"
"I want to talk to the sysadmin, not to support!"
"Yes, I'm the sysadmin for the mail servers."
"No, I mean, the person who actually works with them!"
"Yes, that's me."
"No, I mean the technical person, not support or customer service!"
"Yes, that's me."
"NO! I need to talk to the TECH PEOPLE!"
After a while I gave up, muted my phone and called around the office "There's a guy here who doesn't believe I'm actually working with the mail system. Can one of you guys (all of whom were men) please talk to him?"
Gotta love gender prejudice...

damn

god, there are many girls out there who could teach us even a thing or two about computers

2:55 PM
I have one regarding a MAN though

This happens many times...

He was told to use the mouse to click on the X at the top right

Did he lift the mouse?
I had someone do that once, in front of me.

He LIFTED THE BLOODY MOUSE up and started frantiquilly clicking the mouse while pointing it to the x

Yay! :)

2:56 PM
of course @terdon
and ofcourse he said "IT DOES NOT WORK"

someone told me a story recently about someone who wanted to copy some text from one machine to another... selected the text with the mouse, pressed ctrl C, unplugged the mouse, plugged into the other machine...
6

oh fuck me :X

In my case, it happened to be a woman but, in her defense, it was the first time she'd ever seen a mouse. She's a 69 year old lawyer who, at that time, had only ever worked with DOS. I said, move the mouse "up and to the right" and she did precisely what I told her. It seems obvious to us, but there's no reason why it should be, really.

oh yes hard please me too

Ah, well, someone took care of things for me. Will check comments.

2:58 PM
lol
@user2943160 me! >:)
also some stuff up there ^^^

a star at the right side means someone liked the comment (in here) ?

yes sir/mam

sir

@Rinzwind the server is an actual device and Ubuntu is the current OS layer.

why would you want to use chrome on server

3:02 PM
ok but =when= it is about a server the worst thing =for performance= to do is to install GUI elements.
I would install a VPN on the server. Set up ssh keys. And use putty or something similar

The point would be that if someone messes up the upstream network configuration or changes the firewall and I don't have any certain/any access to ports on the server, I want to be able to control the server.
i already have all of the ssh configuration set, though I need to generate and add some more keys on more than just my daily-driver computer.

I'm sorry if this is a frequent question (I didn't find answer), but I have Ubuntu in a Virtual Box in my iMac, I'm just beginning. Do I click Try Ubuntu or Install Ubuntu?

@user2943160 In that case you anyways need physical access to the machine, then you plug in a keyboard and a monitor and have the TTY you can work with
still no need for a DE on a server enviroment

@PichiWuana install

3:06 PM
@Rinzwind Thanks!

@PichiWuana did you set up a VHD file (or similar for your virtualbox)? then hit install

@Videonauth not if the server is on another continent

or you can first try it

@Rinzwind still if you messed up and locked yourself out then you need someone who has physical access to fix it :)

oh its virtual

3:07 PM
This problem isn't with the box, really. It's with the network.

@Videonauth if you lock yourself out of a google instance you are screwed and the only method is restoring a back
-up
nathy! :=)

not sure if your firewall is messed up .. how you will you be able to access chrome anyway

So: currently I have full SSH access, but I don't control the firewall of the hosting network. I expect that changes to that site-wide firewall will restrict access to my device.

@user2943160 what makes you think that remote desktop would be any better? Any type of access you set up will always depend on a particular port being accessible and so will always be vulnerable to changes in the firewall.

3:17 PM
@user2943160 any changes to the firewall for SSH access or remote desktop (whether VNC, Chrome Remote Desktop, xrdp / RDP (windows style), etc.) will interrupt your connectivity
all those services rely on open ports; a firewall change will disrupt things like that

And of all of them, the safest, simplest and all round bestest would almost certainly be ssh.

@user2943160 ehm. but if they do that it will also affect the chrome setup. Plus adding that you introduce a 2nd possible intrusion point to your server.

I was reading an answer on Stack Overflow and it seemed to be missing something (it left me with an unanswered question). So I started reading the comments and realized I had asked that very question a year ago.

In News: Bulgaria passes Law that mandates Government Software must be Open Source

and now I cant see who liked it xD

@CodeX Well thats normally anonymous bit it was me

3:26 PM
@NathanOsman I had that feeling too once.Made an answer and while investigating i ended up reading an answer and went "oh yes must upvote this" .... and it was me that made the answer :P

great

but comming down to latest news, what concerns me more is that Hungary now plans an referendum on its own

for leaving EU ?

yes
that trend is not good to be honest
at least IMO

@Videonauth To leave the EU or to oppose receiving immigrants?

3:29 PM
Lol

@terdon as far i have read in german media for leaving the EU

@terdon both
in october about leaving

If any of you was on Badoo ..time to change your password troyhunt.com/…

or not, looks like to be about migrants. And a pretty subjective one

Yeah, that's the only one I see.

3:41 PM
@Rinzwind Just happened to me today.
:D

3:54 PM
I installed the Ubuntu in a Virtual Box as some people here said me and I got a black window with some messages. I found some similar answers but not to my problem. I'm sorry, I'm new in this operating system.

@PichiWuana now you wait, it will eventually load
that's just saying that two kernel modules it's trying to load are having problems, but they're non-critical erros

@ThomasW. It has been like that about 5 minutes

it's a Desktop install right?
in a VM?
expect it to take a long time to load

in VM

I have Desktop Ubuntu 14.04 and 16.04 installed on VMs on my hypervisors, each have 4 vCPUs and 250GB disk space and 20MB of video memory consumed on the host for each

3:56 PM
over a MAC as far as I remember

it still takes 7 - 10 minutes.

Yes, in a iMac, OS X El Capitan

@CodeX Wasn't asking about if it's bare metal or not
i was asking whether it was the Ubuntu Desktop ISO used for installing
i.e. with the full GUI
@PichiWuana it will take a while to fully load
and I mean a while

you mean server or desktop ? Desktop .. again I am guessing

@CodeX who you asking
@PichiWuana What version of Ubuntu did you install into the VM? Ubuntu Desktop 16.04?

3:59 PM
@ThomasW. well you asked me bare metal or not .. that was my reply to it

no I didn't.

Ubuntu Desktop 16.04. ubuntu-16.04-desktop-amd64.iso.

it is 16.04 as can be seen in screen shoot

@PichiWuana then expect boot to take up to 30 minutes at most, depending on the hardware and the virtual hardware you've set up
the GUI over a VM is always substantially slower than if it were installed right to the computer

I understand.
Was it a bad choice to give it 2GB RAM to the machine? I have 8 in the iMac
And about 10 giga of hard drive memory

4:01 PM
mine is super slow even in 4 Gb

more ram is almost always good

8 GB is minimum I think
hard drive

Oh yes I think it's what it needs for the install

@ThomasW. 30 minutes for a VM to boot??? I never saw that.

haha

4:03 PM
@ByteCommander no thats for the GUI to load

My 16.04 desktop VM boots in a minute at most, running on my laptop.

@ByteCommander the Ubuntu gui is not light.

Standard Unity? It is light enough.

maybe it's the extra stuff I have on there, but I don't know Pichi's hardware
or what they set for the virtual hardware
so 30 minutes is a super high estimate for max

Okay, let me test mine. I start the VM now.

4:04 PM
that said, I use Server for my VMs since I have an Ubuntu laptop :p

started.

takes less than 5 mins even in my old dual core laptop ..4 gb ram

And it's on the desktop.
about 55 seconds.
I gave mine 4GB RAM and 2 CPU cores. Host hardware is an i5-6200U and 12GB RAM.
Hypervisor is Qemu/KVM on Ubuntu 16.04
If yours takes 30 minutes (especially given how you usually boast about your hardware), there seems something badly wrong to me.

yeah my y50 also boots up in seconds ..16 gb ram and hybrid hard drive

but that's a real installation and not a VM, right?

4:10 PM
yeah its not virtual though .. but virtual also boots in seconds ..when I try in windows (haven't tried in Ubuntu)

@fossfreedom (fossfreedom) has his membership meeting today at 2000 UTC! Join #ubuntu-meeting on freenode if you want to support him!
5

The CPU should support hardware virtualization though. That makes a big difference.

yeah also without enabling it .. virtual box only shows 32 bit versions of distro in list

@Seth Your message looks weird on the star wall with that superping in it.

heheh

4:24 PM
@ByteCommander I couldn't ping him the normal way :/

Music video ..Change the actors by clicking ..cassiusthemissing.com/#!/video

@Seth Yeah but still you could edit the message on the starwall? no ?

The starwall is updated if you edit the starred message. One of the nicer small improvements.

Q: How to dual boot ubuntu with windows 8.1

Ketul PatelI have preinstalled Windows 8.1. But After installing Ubuntu 14.04, When starting up the computer, it now goes straight to Windows, without giving me the option of booting Ubuntu. How can I get Ubuntu back?

4:41 PM
Yay, another epic day! \o/

@ByteCommander Did your long meta rant ever materialize?

Uhm... nope.
I stayed with private mod messages but had no success anyway.
And I was too lazy.

@ByteCommander Well the irate-ness probably wore off too.

Q: State of AMD drivers in 16.04

Android DevI am really confused about the state of AMD drivers on 16.04 My question is six-fold. What is the difference between The amdgpu driver, The radeon driver, and The radeon-pro driver? When would each of those drivers be used? Are they all open-source? Can you switch between them? Which...

user136984
Oh no... There's been another attack in Bangladesh...

@ParanoidPanda :(

:(

5:17 PM
Hm, it's relatively a minor attack.

The article I read immediately and without any evidence ascribed it to "Islamists". It might, I guess, even be true, but why would "Islamists" go and attack people celebrating the end of Ramadan?

@terdon Solely because people will view the article and the ads.
Therefore, money for the organization that owns the site and pays the "journalist"

Extremist Islamists consider moderates as against their principles too.

@jokerdino True, but why would it be moderates celebrating the end of Ramadan? It just seems like a strange target.

user136984
@terdon: For being the "wrong" type of Muslim, or because they want you to ask that and assume it's some racist to stir things up more.

5:20 PM
Such a celebration is one of the few places I can think of where both moderates and extremists would be together.

user136984
Yes, I know, it's strange, why would be people go for them if they attack sacred Islamic places?

They see a large gathering, they go boom.
It's not about why they gather.. it's more about how much of an impact they can cause.

user136984
But why would they attack the people they want to like and join them?

user136984
But wouldn't the impact be Muslims going against them even more so?

@jokerdino and this is why i think they have a serious bug in their wiring

5:22 PM
The basic idea is to cause terror in the people's mind and they will try to do that whichever way it is possible.

user136984
I still don't think the logic really stands though. If I wanted people to join me, I wouldn't blow them up and what is sacred in their religion, and mine, apparently.

They probably have enough people already. They are here to cause chaos.
They are hurting people who are against their principles of extremism.

user136984
@jokerdino: But they are attacking what they say they are fighting more, the sacredness of Islam and its sacred places. No?

You really believe that?

user136984
It just doesn't all make sense, unless it's a different type of Muslim who they are targeting.

5:26 PM
It is only about power, nothing else

user136984
@jokerdino: Well, people aren't going to join them unless they at least pretend to think that way.

not about religion, this is only their cover story

user136984
@Videonauth: Yes, but they are destroying their cover story which is the only real reason people, at least initially, join them.

@ParanoidPanda 1) Extremism never makes sense. 2) Most organized religion doesn't make sense either. Combine the two and any residual sense goes straight out the window.
3

^ what he said
even the koran states you shalt not kill

user136984
5:27 PM
@Rinzwind: I got an official email today which said that 15.10 goes EOL on the 28th by the way.

and the meaning of djihad is devinetively not what they are doing

user136984
@Videonauth: Doesn't it say something along the lines of you should either convert others, kill them, or tax them for they different beliefs? Or is that Sharia law?

user136984
@Videonauth: Perhaps it is an interpretation.

thats simply the sharia
the koran not states any of this
and before someone thinks im muslim, im not bt i have many muslim friends with which i already had long talks about that matter

user136984
How can they co-exist if they have different views on things like killing. Why is sharia law allowed to set the exceptions and not their supreme book?

5:30 PM
@ParanoidPanda Are you kidding? How do Christians do it? Remember that this is the "religion of love" that is espoused by people who are pro-gun, pro-nuclear weapons, pro "preventive action" and starting wars. Don't try to make sense of it.

why did we had the crusades ?

@Videonauth Good money in that. Also, your sins were forgiven, don'tcha know.

because the people we call religious leaders told us to

Come back after you have read about the history of Islam and the reasons behind why there's unrest in the Middle East all the time.

and if we didnt want end up on the block we will do as they say

user136984
5:31 PM
So if some choose to follow the book, and some more to sharia, then it is kind of still them...

user136984
I mean, both are from them...

@jokerdino But, but, that's because Mooslims are baad, right? They just want to attack the west because they hate our way of life! It's as though they think we've been invading them, raping them, repartitioning their countries and otherwise oppressing them for a thousand years! What is wrong with these people!?

@Videonauth: But there are some nuts too who really believe in it being god's will to kill others.

Yup. The previous president of the US comes to mind.

everyone dreaming of slim cows

well im not the person who really likes to argue about religion tho, for me everyone is entitled to hold his own belief or viewpoint

Some things that will pop up... Creation of the state of Israel.. Iran before and after 1974(?) civil war, Al qaeda (you know who funded them?), Gulf wars, invasion of Iraq, Arab Spring and finally the ISIS.

@Videonauth Religion is one thing. Organized religion is something very different and Western ignorance about Islam is something else again.

(Just made that up, it sounds like one of those adverts.)

If I execute the symlink to a file (sublime text's executable), it opens a window that is recognized different from the one created by executing the file itself, i.e. the title shown in Unity of the window is different. Also, if I pin the executable on the left, running the symlink creates a window which is different from that pinned executable. How do I fix this?
Creating a hard link works fine, though
This problem only occurs with a soft link. Is this normal?
okay, no. the hard link isn't working

PEOPLE NEED TO STOP UPVOTING ME
I lost at least 500 rep today because of the cap.

@KazWolfe that's gotta hurt

user136984
Maybe the more rep you have the higher the rep cap should be?

user136984
Or maybe not...

user136984
I don't know...

user136984
Maybe there should be two rep stats.

user136984
6:19 PM
One which represents how much people like your posts, and the other a capped version showing also the length of time you could have been here.

user136984
Or probably would have been here as it's unlikely all due to big bounties.

user136984
So... I've got the end of this week, then the whole of next week and one day between me and the possible impending doom approaching me... Well, that's nice to know...

Hello
You won't believe what I'm doing right now
I'm downloading a Windows 10 VM

@grooveplex HERETIC !! xD

I know... I'm sorry.
I think it will be a download job that is going to take 2 or 3 days
Because I'll pause the download and then turn off my laptop and continue where I left (hopefully)

6:33 PM
why

If I won't be able to continue the download
But I think I can leave it running for at least an hour and Chromium says that's enough

what

The HUGE download

my uncle and his wife live in a remote part of Crete. They set up some kind of mobile data connection for their desktop machine to get internet. A few weeks later, they were offered a 'free' upgrade to Win10. They clicked 'yes please' or whatever...

and a month later they got a bill for £1700
