@NathanOsman Yeah, "Good luck figuring it out :P" - good luck indeed.
still think thomas is on that list.
as is terdon?
Maybe he switched the order too.
user136984
Is anyone here using Wayland instead of X?
You're stabbing in the dark.
@ParanoidPanda No.
19:00
@ParanoidPanda Wayland... what's that? :D
@ParanoidPanda Or Mir.
@NathanOsman I'm trying to figure out by the position of the AU logos
user136984
@Nathan: It's the GNOME replacement for X. Like MIR.
@ParanoidPanda I don't think it's a GNOME project
@KazWolfe i wrote a script to do that, jk
19:01
Wayland is not a Gnome project.
but GNOME is the first DE to have a mostly-complete Wayland port
user136984
I didn't say it was... It's just that's what they're going to use.
> "Wayland is developed by a group of volunteers led by Kristian Høgsberg as a free and open community-driven project with the aim of replacing the X Window System with a modern, simpler windowing system in Linux and Unix-like operating systems."
- From here
so we have wayland, mir, and X
why
Time to write one display server to rule them all.
19:02
Mostly because X is slow, insecure and hacky
user136984
Anyway, do you guys think that this is around the time that most Linux-distros are replacing X with something else better?
@BharadwajRaju This. And it's really difficult to configure.
@KazWolfe Exactly what I was thinking.
put them all together and call it then wirx the neyw systemd of the gui part of lunix
3
@KazWolfe Same thought.
19:03
systemd-displayd
Please no.
@Videonauth It just wirx™!
3
Just... no.
SystemD already does enough to overstep it's bounds
@MarcoCeppi systemd is love.
systemd is life.
19:04
And systemd is death
WHy did I know that this will start a discussion ;) ?
i actually like it more than Upstart
but i'm weird
Mostly because of bad decisions
There are parts of systemd I appreciate and other parts that make me go... "what in the world were they thinking?"
@Videonauth Spaces are better than tabs.
19:06
@KazWolfe right !
4-width hard tabs! At least they adhere to a dev's IDE preferences.
I prefer 4 spaces
someone post a period. i bet it'll get starred, agian.
And reduce file size
.

The binary logfiles bit me the other day when I was trying to figure out why my Pi wouldn't boot from the SD card I had. I didn't have a display or peripherals connected, so my only way of troubleshooting was to put the card in, boot, take the card out, stick it in another machine, and read the logs.
19:06
sigh
@BharadwajRaju You are banned from Ask Ubuntu General Discussion.
The binary logfiles seem crazy.
test
user136984
Anyway, I think I will install Wayland...
A nuisance, yes.
No I'm not
<-- getting popcorn
19:08
Who was telling me that Fedora 24 launched today?
I think there was a way to get plain-text logs is systemd
user136984
It currently only supports certain drivers but it should support mine...
Printers are evil.
2
Sent from hell
19:10
Printers are still very complicated
I had to resort to printing from OS X since Ubuntu simply would not print 4x6" photos correctly.
They complicate what should be very simple
And this is the 21st century.
We have self-driving cars.
But we can't put ink onto paper yet.
19:10
printers have not improved since 1995
user136984
So far I have not got a printer to work with Ubuntu... :(
@KazWolfe 1995? What was so good about printers in 1995?
yeah and we can find every person alive up to a meter exact by gps but still were loosing whole airplanes
But no it Just Works™ printer
even on other OSes
Communicating with the printer always reminds me of Star Trek trying to log in to an alien computer on a derelict spaceship they just found.
19:11
^--- this
Glares at HP...
glares at *everyone*
I heard that we could just do cat to_print.jpg > /dev/lp0
and expiring ink cartridges. I want to meet the exec that thought of that one
in the good ol' days
user136984
I really want to elections to be over... But at the same time, I really don't... :D
19:14
Fun fact. It's cheaper to buy a new printer than it is to buy ink.
@KazWolfe to be fair, they are chemicals. And they do undergo slow reactions over time that undoubtedly causes lower quality.
So whenever your printer runs out of ink, REPLACE IT ENTIRELY
@KazWolfe *cough* loss leader *cough*
@NathanOsman Not within the year and a half before the cartridge expires.
user136984
@Nathan: Toasters are more evil than Printers!
@BharadwajRaju jep the jpg files looked like that here paste.ubuntu.com/17658087
user136984
I've caught several Toasters on fire... :D
or no... the moment when cartridges count in "pages" and one solid-color page equals a page with a single dot of that color on it
user136984
Had to throw them out of the window into the garden... :D
@ParanoidPanda Relevant xkcd on Toasters: xkcd.com/293
19:16
@ParanoidPanda Do you want fire ants? Because that's how you get fire ants.
My friend had an ink printer that always slammed its print head against its case so furiously that it almost jumped off the table after a few sheets...
2
@ByteCommander so every HP printer ever
user136984
@ByteCommander: :D :D :D
laser printers are chill. But they're expensive af.
Probably that poor print head just wanted to be freed from its tight jail...
19:21
Hi folks
hey hey @Serg
@ByteCommander: I tried running it without sudo already but it just told me there were no changes to make, could that change if I ran it with sudo? — Paranoid Panda 8 mins ago
Election ends in 38 minutes
I'm so hyped
How's the election going ?
19:21
@ParanoidPanda Why don't you just try it??? ^
@Serg o/ :)
@Serg How should we know?
user136984
@ByteCommander: Guess I could do... :P
hey question for elections. It's always first/second/third choice, right?
user136984
Just my Terminal crashed at the time so I couldn't do it then...
19:23
@ByteCommander i thought you guys already know de rezultz
suuuure...
we know but we wont share
my printers all work out of the box on linux.
HP <3
I got a Brother ink printer.
19:25
34 minutes!
It used to work flawlessly, but recently it complains about some strange Init error when I power it on.
@BharadwajRaju well, my prediction didn't go that wrong. I kinda know who won now
The only way to solve it is to open and close it.
> Init error
Try systemd :)
In the printer display, not on the computer.
19:27
1 min ago, by Bharadwaj Raju
Try systemd :)
I'm pretty sure the printer runs some kind of embedded Linux
Btw, we're flushing the star wall again today. The oldest starred (and not pinned) post is just 1h old.
floosh!
starwall.flush();

Windows 10 is better than Ubuntu.
4
19:28
By the way, did you guys know John Cena speaks Chinese ?
@KazWolfe There you go
@KazWolfe not your personal army , don't tell us what to do . .. . Oh wait, this isn't 4chan is it ?

Duly noted.
19:30
*****BEEEEEEEP*****
we have too much fun with the starwall :P
I case of fire, git commit, git push, leave building !!!
Now, here's my "Everything's Ok Alarm". THIS WILL SOUND EVERY 3 SECONDS, UNLESS SOMETHING ISN'T OKAY!

My God. @KazWolfe Just edited something we all starred into 'Windows 10 > Ubuntu'
AskUbuntu zodiac room . . . Because stars
19:31
Unstar!
@KazWolfe HEATHEN!
Looks both ways.
@ThomasW. I told you not to star it!
I can... remove the stars >:)
@KazWolfe I didn't :P

Yay, penguin puns
One thing's for sure. Math.SE doesn't have fun chats like this.
19:34
Math.se is actually sensible.
@Seth sometimes, though, senselessness is useful :)
but I do agree with you
@NathanOsman would you edit out the word completely from that message for me?
@ThomasW. at times.
Alright - I have a shell one-liner to download the election data, compute the winners, and copy the result to the clipboard.
19:35
@KazWolfe because Math. SE talks only about sins and radicals . . . .
6
@Serg Hahahaha
And how to get a tan
@NathanOsman what did you use for a backend to openstv? Last time I tried there was no backend.
@BharadwajRaju :)
19:36
math puns /facepalm
you must have know what was coming
@StefanoPalazzo I'm a bit confused. What am I supposed to edit?
@Serg that's brilliant .
@Seth Backend? The CLI tool?
I tought you might remove the word "completely", so it's "I am aghast"
19:36
Ah.
@NathanOsman there is one? What package?
Maybe i should ask them how do i integrate . . .into normal society. . . . .Although i don't derive pleasure from any of it
@Seth openstv ?
@Seth openstv - the command you want is openstv-run-election.
But I'm not sharing my shell one-liner until after the election.
@Serg is on a roll
19:37
I don't want to lose my competitive advantage.
:)
@edwinksl not really actually, my head is pretty blank today
Whoa, I should really refox.
Everything gets laggy once your swap grows to 500 MB...
@NathanOsman aha, that is why I could not find.
it*
Maybe i should have promised free pankakes for users over 1k in my nomination. That would be an advantage
We've had more than 1000 people vote
that's great
19:39
Sweet.
what's the turnout rate
@Serg or... bacon.
That is almost double last election
@NathanOsman Awww, I wanted it so I could evaluate past data :P
But... that's practically cheating.
19:39
20 minutes left
@ThomasW. You can. As soon as the election is over :D
@NathanOsman heh
yay i now have a one-liner too
@KazWolfe I'm working on mine right now.
19:42
My nomination for future election: my name is bacon and i love bacon. Bacon bacon bacon and some more bacon. I have lots of bacon experience and used to work with bacon. My scripts involve mostly bacon shell. Let's make bacon great again
Quuuuuestion. Does Ubuntu Studio use a customized version of Xubuntu?
Should only take like 5 minutes to write your own.
@NathanOsman ya
Drat.
So that's why NitroShare doesn't work there.
I couldn't figure out why it was having issues since it ran fine in Xubuntu.
2.75 GB? Sigh...
We've been talking about it for the last 30 minutes
@Serg Oops, yup. :)
19:45
we should do an exit poll
sudo poll exit now
@Seth xclip isn't copying it to the clipboard!
@AndroidDev shift + insert
Try that
xclip -sel clip file. txt
@Serg You mean sudo systemctl stop exitpoll.service
@Serg Any way to make it work wit ctrl+v?
19:49
10 minutes left I am so excited
alias toclip='xclip -sel clip'
You get a one-liner! You get a one-liner! EVERYONE GETS A ONE-LINER!
@AndroidDev i think it should work with ctrl v but i usually use shift instert
19:50
9 minutes
@BharadwajRaju You can't get in if you didn't nominate, BTW. :) Just kidding, I'm excited too.
sudo election -results -NAU
@Serg whatis election
which election
In the terminal.
19:53
election: nothing appropriate.
Goodness
Type man sex in the terminal
Just for the lolz, i actually have a function in my .mkshrc whatis, and if you provide argument love, it will spit out the next line
do it
O my actual god there is a man page for sex
you can stop now
user136984
19:54
Oh dear, what on earth are you people talking about now again?
I am sure people don't need manual for that
@ParanoidPanda Absolutely useless topics. It's what happens when little kids get excited.
Nah, sex is a utility:
This needs some work: fortune -o -m 'election'
> sex allows the invoker to have sex with the user(s) specified in the command line. If no users are specified, they are taken from the LOVERS environment variable.
Options to make things more interesting are as follows:
19:55
Ok, we don't really need to hear it...
O. o
what the
user136984
@BharadwajRaju: What the hell?!
user136984
Is he joking?
@ParanoidPanda from man sex
user136984
19:56
I hope he is...
@ParanoidPanda Or he's waiting for someone to poke a mod
┌─[12:56:08]─[kazwolfe@BlackFire]
└──> ~ $ man sex
No manual entry for sex
but yes he is
user136984
Yeah, what is that? Some joke package?
I haz no such manual . . . .and dont need one
19:56
hmm
maybe
user136984
Only once you have installed a package do you have its manual page...
ELECTION HYPE

LESS THAN 3 MINUTES REMAINING
Let me guess, I'm still gonna be on the 5th place
19:58
