"/usr/local/<blah>" is Unix. Not Linux. — Rinzwind 4 mins ago
@Rinzwind ?
> In older Unix systems, user home directories might still appear in /usr alongside directories containing programs, although by 1984 this depended on "local customs".[12]
I doubt the OP's mother is using a >30-year old UNIX install. Or, if she is, she is very unlikely to need her son's help in dealing with it.
@terdon most of the unix systems I know have a /usr/local/{user}/
@Rinzwind Really? Even today?
well. "today". some are pretty old :+
Yeah, but surely not from the 80s!
09:14
ls /usr/local/ | grep "$USER"
returns nothing
heck I even have one with "/usr/{user}/" How f****g annoyingly is that?
:)
@BharadwajRaju No, we're talking about Unix, not Linux
funny one: 10 or so years ago someone tried to make a username that was a command in /usr/. The system did not even complain and just made it ...
@Rinzwind Huh? As in /usr/"rm -rf *"?
dunno what is was :P
oh wait
"local" was the name
09:17
Hmm. It shouldn't actually be a problem now that I think about it
@Rinzwind Ah! Yes, that would be a problem :)
So what, the system took over /usr/local as the user's $HOME?
it sure did.
does not happen anymore :D
> Election closes in 10 hours.
I have seen far worse though
@terdon was my answer so badly wrong/harmfull or partial or none answer at all that is qualified for a down-vote ?
@Videonauth Yes, it didn't work at all. I always downvote wrong answers. I also remove the downvote if they're fixed.
That's why it's a good idea to always test your answers before posting. Your current one also fails. You need something like this:
sed -i "s/Min_Inc=300000/Min_Inc=$New_Val/" /path/file-name
Or:
sed -i 's/Min_Inc=300000/Min_Inc='$New_Val'/' /path/<file-name>
It is not personal, of course. The downvote serves to inform the next user that reads an answer that this answer is wrong. Not downvoting wrong answers actively harms the site, just like not upvoting good ones.
09:28
michael@NEXUS-ONE:~$ nano test
michael@NEXUS-ONE:~$ new_val=400000
michael@NEXUS-ONE:~$ cat test
Min_Inc=300000
michael@NEXUS-ONE:~$ sed 's/Min_Inc=300000/Min_Inc="$New_Val"/' ./test
Min_Inc="$New_Val"
michael@NEXUS-ONE:~$ sed 's/Min_Inc=300000/Min_Inc='$New_Val'/' ./test
Min_Inc=
michael@NEXUS-ONE:~$ sed "s/Min_Inc=300000/Min_Inc=$New_Val/" ./test
Min_Inc=
so sadly i cant down-vote wrong comments
@Videonauth New_Val != $new_val
$ New_Val=400000
$ sed 's/Min_Inc=300000/Min_Inc="$New_Val"/' file
Min_Inc="$New_Val"
$ sed "s/Min_Inc=300000/Min_Inc=$New_Val/" file
Min_Inc=400000
$ sed 's/Min_Inc=300000/Min_Inc='$New_Val'/' file
Min_Inc=400000
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/firefox-50-nightly-contextual-identity,32098.html

Mozilla announced that it’s bringing a new feature to Firefox 50 Nightly, which is designed to help users easily separate their personal, work, banking, and shopping browsing habits on a per-tab basis.
Neat :-)
@Rinzwind neat stuff
but i don't use firefox :/
@Videonauth there, I corrected it.
hey when 1 browser does it and it works the others tend to follow.
@terdon so you GAVE the fish? :=)
09:36
@Rinzwind I tried to teach the fishing but it wasn't appreciated.
then you should let them starve D:
you caved!
and you want to be a AU mod?
oh wait so does Videonauth :D
hmm
@Videonauth seemed to be taking it personally and I had no wish to antagonize him.
@Rinzwind @terdon O.k. let me put it this way, what would you more appreciate when you screwed something up, if i tell you here in chat where we mostly know each other and can discuss it in normal ways, or if I put you a down-vote and left you a comment for the whole site to see? This feels like being told off by your company boss in front of all other employees right?
well this is far more humorous from MY side of things.
I appreciate when someone tells me where Im wrong, its the way of doing it which put me off this time
09:39
@Videonauth Sorry, it wasn't intended that way. I don't know if you're in chat, someone else might see it in the meantime. There's nothing wrong with being corrected, people do it to me all the time. Gilles, for example, always downvotes and corrects my answers on U&L and then reverses the downvote and deletes the comment if I fix them.
Plus, the comment is useful for everyone.
O.k. well even if im in my bed im in this chat ;)
since im not sleeping i even might fire op the laptop and see what the ping is about
Also, I admit I was a little annoyed because you posted an answer that can be trivially checked without making sure it works. It only takes a minute to test this sort of thing after all.
well now that we put each others viewpoint in perspective i say ok let there be peace
no.
peace is overrated anyways.
09:49
@Rinzwind some people just like to watch the world burn
all the best inventions where made during war time >:-D
@Rinzwind Really? Even ice cream?
@terdon Sanitary towels, paper hankies, sun lamp, Tea bags, wristwatch, Zips Stainless steel Communications between air planes
and that's just WW1 :=)
10:08
I just created an ocean wave sound generator for Oli's baby :)
What do you think about this?
play -n synth brownnoise synth pinknoise mix synth sine amod 0.3 10
(needs sudo apt install sox)
not bad
Oli
Oli
@Rinzwind I'm not sure zips were worth 38 million casualties.
Tea bags on the other hand...
Oli
Oli
@ByteCommander Is there any way to include a bit of random variance in the speed/intensity of the wave? And seagulls. Needs seagulls.
it's always the tea bags
10:14
Phew... Seagulls will be difficult.
Not sure if it can mix in sounds at random.
Or if it can modulate anything at random.
maybe using /dev/urandom to variate the wave sound as it is
I can add a sweep so that the waves come faster and slower, but not at random, I think. Okay @Oli?
This requires you to add a timer though, I think.
@Oli :-D
Oh interested Oli?
@Rinzwind Yeah, we need to synchronize that with my ocean wave generator! :D
10:44
Bash, why thou have no floating point arithmetic!? :P
79
Q: How can I get float division?

Medya GhI am trying to divide two image widths in a Bash script, but bash gives me 0 as the result: RESULT=$(($IMG_WIDTH/$IMG2_WIDTH)) I did study the Bash guide and I know I should use bc, in all examples in internet they use bc. In echo I tried to put the same thing in my SCALE but it didn't work. ...

Bash makes me sad.
@ByteCommander Use bc or awk or perl
@Oli Sorry, all my attempts to add some randomness or even sweeps make it only sound weird. I'm not able to do it. :-/
@terdon Did use bc, but although it calculates correctly, I still don't manage to achieve what I wanted.
What do you need?
10:57
Oli's baby will have to live without random waves and seagulls.
play -n synth 1:0 brownnoise synth pinknoise mix synth sine amod 0.3 10
I tried to script some bash loops around this wave sound generator command to make them a bit random, but I can't get smooth transitions.
and what would have to change to create some kind of randomness ?
For example we could change the wave frequency which is 0.3 in the example above.
mhmmmm
I can also create frequency sweeps, but I can not repeat them properly.
 play -n synth 1:0 brownnoise synth pinknoise mix synth 5 sine amod 0.1-0.5 10
^ sweeps from 0.1 to 0.5 Hz within 5 seconds.
But it stops playing then, so I would have to loop it.
Running the above in a loop though sounds weird because the end of that sound does not match its beginning.
This is my last approach, but sounds ugly:
for i in {1..10}; do
   var_len=$(($RANDOM%5+1))
   var_freq=$(bc -l <<< "1 / $var_len")
   echo "len: $var_len --- freq: $var_freq"
   play -n synth brownnoise synth pinknoise mix synth $var_len sine amod $var_freq 10
done
@JacobVlijm @Serg Does any of you have a solution for this? askubuntu.com/q/789665/367990 (kbd shortcut to split the screen between 3 windows horizontally) - I guess you have done similar things already, if not the same.
michael@NEXUS-ONE:~$ python3 -c "print(3 / 2)"
1.5
just dunno if you can expand bash variables in that line
11:07
or you could write a pure python script
@ByteCommander I am positive I did, but I am on mobile...
...will look itup if I get home!
@Videonauth That would work as well as the $(bc -l <<< "1 / $var"), but it's not the problem.
@ByteCommander Here's a related question that Jacob and I answered;

Q: How can I find windows of a specific application and place them into a grid?

GrimlockzI'm trying to write a script to identify all open chrome windows and move them into a grid layout on a large screen I'm not sure how to find out what the best resolutions would be so I was going to manually add them in to a array so if 1 chrome window was available then maximise that, if 2 chro...

This one too:

Q: How can I start up an application with a pre-defined window size and position?

STimI'm wondering is there any way to achieve the affect of the Ctrl-Alt-Keypad shortcuts in Unity using terminal commands instead? I want a command that sets a gui window to half the size of the screen, either left or right aligned. By way of background, I'm writing a script that runs after log in....

It would be simple enough to modify one of these answers for that question but I dont' have time now
@ByteCommander well I just did run it it doesn't sound too bad
11:37

A: I need Step by step openstack installation on ubuntu

Mark ShuttleworthTry this. I have used the "next" PPA of conjure-up because it has a lot of fixes, but it also uses Juju 2.0 beta which is a beta :) Your call on whether you do that or use stock conjure-up from the stable archives. Note that the main archive will be updated to get the new conjure-up anyway, once ...

he is making better answers >:-D

Whoa, did you know that aptitude has a built-in minesweeper? o.O
Oli
Oli
It doesn't. Those are packages you're blowing up there!
:D
@Oli Sure? ^ :)
Oli
Oli
I'm sure I was joking. But that would be a fun game. If you lose it silently removes a package and doesn't tell you what it was.
You mean like Russian roulette but for packages? xD

And some skill instead of blind luck, but yeah

Q: I cannot type the letter 'l' in terminal on mac

user3146340I can type the letter L on any other applications except for within the terminal. I was wondering whether it would have something to do with the bash setting in .bashrc

Prepare to be MODifed! :D

@HenryWHHack Do not taunt the happy fun mods.
and apparently the happy fun lawyers since I can't find the original happy fun ball video on youtuve
Hello Mr JourneymanGeek! :)
Even respect is not working.
Not working with what?
I mean, I quite literally replied to a terrible joke with a classy one
13:15
You forgiving me.
See, you keep doing it.
what's happening
@edwinksl JourneymanGeek Is not telling me what I am doing.
@HenryWHHack You should know what you did.
hm. I suppose that works too.
Hi @edwinksl
13:23
hooray I have been kick out again. :)
@JourneymanGeek hey :)
Any ideas for further optimizing an nginx server. Already got caching/SSD server?!
Fell down after IPT. skinned my knee
If it happened in camp, I'd probably have gotten a medic to deal with it. Instead came home with a blood covered knee ;p
13:39
which camp did you do your IPT?
uh oh army talk incoming lol
13:50
Maju
We got the nutty FT tho
No gym time.
(i do green tag, and usually a good chunk of it is slacking off at gym)
@Rinzwind juno is hella old release of OpenStack, and even then the install instructions from upstream aren't very good
is it? :X

14:05
yeah, Mitaka is the latest release, (alphabetical order)
Do we want comments like this?
Hey, the sabdfl is here! — Bharadwaj Raju 2 hours ago
ok :)
@terdon ehm. I would suggest "no"
since comments are second class citizens, we don't really want them at all
@Rinzwind Yeah, me too. I just didn't want to be berated as a Mark hater
Mark hater.
;p
14:06
@Seth Ginda like a Mad Hatter mark 2
/me deletes
@terdon focus your hate on @muru >:-D
@MarcoCeppi Cool, thanks
sorry, deleted already.
I know Marco would probably delete it (see), but I would probably be "meh" and leave it.
14:07
@Rinzwind Hey, hating @muru is your thing, not mine. I can't hate the poor fellow, I pity him. Poor thing is a vim user.
He has enough problems as it is.
@MarcoCeppi So wazzup? You're on the CC now!
I wouldn't care unless someone's throwing a hissy fit about that comment being there.
@terdon when he stops finding dupes on my answers I will stop :=D
@Seth Yeah, it's been a crazy couple of months
what about some of the comments in askubuntu.com/questions/789465/…
14:10
@edwinksl flag the specific comments and I'll go through them
i am curious to hear @terdon's opinion
@jokerdino I'd dump those on Oli :=)
@edwinksl I'd delete all of them except the couple that actually help the question
comments are transient anyway
@James copy your post to the election room too?
:)
anyways, how goes it, world :)
Has anyone ever felt Ubuntu should stop making non-LTS releases and focus on the LTS ones?
A new release every 6 months would be somewhat of a waste of resources and time.
To answer that, you have to ask everyone
That is why this is in Chat
@BharadwajRaju not me. non-LTS have a reason: those are used to create new software. LTS are used to harden the OS.
14:48
Exactly. I like the latest, at least on one box
and fyi: Ubuntu will drop the in between releases soon enough and switch to a rolling release between LTS's.
...Also to test stuff on future releases
A full rolling-release, maybe?
@Rinzwind That's news to me - when will that happen ?
Like Arch, but stable
14:51
@JonasCz It is a sure thing, not sure when it will be a fact, but read it somewhere too
@JonasCz not soon ;-) there's been chatter about this every so often and it seems a method that would free up tons of resources.
video about it
So Ubuntu is basically planning to do what Mint is doing ? i.e LTS releases only, with updated ISOs in between ?
that's from 2013
any of the mods willing to take a stance on those edit suggestions ? askubuntu.com/users/340497/…
so ..."planning" is probably a bit much. More like: "some people would like it".
14:56
Mint does that, now?
@Videonauth I should be
I'll handle them tonight
i only had a few reviews left but rejected them as far
@Videonauth Whoa, 14 suggested edits in 8 minutes?
That guy must be a robot...
shotgun approach
no just quick in deleting thanks and please elp and such
@jokerdino Superping that user here?
14:58
more those edits arnt
@BharadwajRaju please tell me what else I should be doing also.
@BharadwajRaju im pretty sure our tea rex will do the right thing (tm)
@jokerdino I meant that as a suggestion, so that we can tell the user etc.
@jokerdino What about sending free beer to everyone in chat? ;-)
yes please and 99 virgins ...
15:01
ahem... >.>
@BharadwajRaju Yes. They base each version of mint on Ubuntu LTS releases (14.04 for mint 17.x, 16.04 for mint 18.x), with updated ISOs every 6 months), reasoning is that it frees up resources - seems to be working well so far.
btw picking up on Perl. Seems extremely friendly to a python person :), but just starting...
@Videonauth a large # of those pending have been rejected....
yes i know im one who reject them meanwhile
in other news, only 32 more edit reviews before I reach the gold badge for edit reviews heh
15:06
^.^
@ThomasW. you can make that today. maybe even before the election ends ;)
@Seth if and only if I hadn't already reviewed the amount it lets me review
close to that 20vote cap
yes it exists
Oh. That doesn't help.
shows you how little reviewing I've done since becoming a moderator..
@Seth I think mods have NoLimit
@Videonauth are we having fun with our excessive moderation?
15:10
nonmods have 20 /review cap per category
@Seth though I went from 954 to 968 now so heh
@ThomasW. we don't, but we also knock everything out of the queue after 1 review so we tend to leave it for the community.
@Zacharee1 sure im only doing that to give you a chance to overtake me again :))
@Videonauth I'm too lazy :p
Well I guess the Federal Government came in use today...
15:12
at 970 now heh
i need 30 more :)
they just donated 11 Computers (3 desktops, 8 hp elitebooks) to the school
I should say the USDA...
why'd you reject this @Thomas? askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/582026
@TheXed can I have one of the elitebooks? :P
@Seth no. :-P
15:14
@Seth misclicks happen - sticky external mouse key
@Seth though, I don't see two misspellings and the adding of a contraction being fixed as 'substantial' anymore
tho it is kinda hard to accidentally reject something.
@Seth mix of both :)
@ThomasW. well when they are the only things that need fixing it is
15:15
@Seth 20/20 hindsight, yes.
:)
agree with you
I probably won't be here for the election's end, but I will try to pop in on mobile.
no problem :)

I can't work like this.
@ByteCommander I ran through the edits of Pierre.Vriens and I only managed to spot 2 edits where the post should have been flagged. His recent record looks good too. Do you still want to press charges?

but that's only in that chat :)

@Seth
@SeverusTux you could just flag it ;)
Thats done :)
But mods can delete 'em instantly .
@StefanoPalazzo is this you in anticipation of the election?
:P
@SeverusTux But the flags will end up there too :)
many have marked this as a dup of this , but I don't see how . The question is about installing Genymotion on 14.04 (where they are providing .deb for 15 and later) , the question to which everyone is pointing doesn't even have the word "Genymotion" in it.
16:25
@SeverusTux that looks ... weird
I think genymotion is a windows app
Which would explain the dupe votes
Nope, I am using it
"Come back in 7 hours to continue reviewing" >.>
16:27
Genymotion is an app to run android devices
Ah, nope:
> Genymotion works on Linux, Windows, Mac OS X.
1 rep away from 24.5k exactly lol... shrugs
@terdon this is how i use android ;P ( i.sstatic.net/1TkND.png)
@SeverusTux looks like you need to charge your device soon
@edwinksl ;P I tried many devices, but some apps wont work in higher versions of android. (like uber) , So i am living with 4.3
@Seth here?
Or any mod? I missed the spam in the edit description: askubuntu.com/questions/789807/…
ugh
I'm stuck on TouchWiz
It's called hell.
well yes
@muru ouch
16:53
@muru noice
fixed
Thanks
There was another one just after that, which I rejected and edited
Both anon. Maybe you can use IPs or something to see what's going on
Is the edit-desc spam new?
new-ish for here.
@ThomasW. check edit description: askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/582123 Just heads up that this is a thing now
I have seen plenty of edit trolls, but edit spam, this is just the second time
16:56
@Seth guess what the system isn't showing me
edit reason
nukes cache
o_O
@Seth OK will keep an eye out
but i've had a lot of issues with /review showing me things that aren't there and not showing things
not sure if SE is messin with me :)
lol edit spam, people getting more and more creative
@ThomasW. " showing me things that aren't there and not showing things which are there " sounds like Windows ;P .

Q: Inbound and Outbound ports need to open for NFS in AWS

shibinWhat are the required ports (Inbound and Outbound) need to be opened in AWS while configuring NFS.? While mounting I'm getting the timeout error. Someone, please help on this. I'm using Ubuntu 16 as server and client.

@terdon answer -> comment flags incoming on that one
please poke
Are torrents completely banned in your countries ? coz, In India torrents are equivalent to google :P , that genymotion guy could find older versions of Genymotion on Kickass-torrents.
@terdon nevermind - they asked a comment in a question, then edited their post once OP commented
which is poor :P

@NathanOsman Is George ready to go? :)
George was born ready.

completely ignored Ask Ubuntu on his wiki page :(
@Seth his account is deleted. How can he link it?
@jokerdino true..

@jokerdino About that PierreVriens user who just edits old posts all day and removes "This should have been a comment" lines - his recent edits (since last Saturday) still follow that same pattern, but these times they at least seem to fit... If you want to leave it like that, I think that would also be ok.
@ByteCommander OK. I will keep him as my card.

And the trouble if your BIOS listens to the same key as e.g. GRUB or whatever boot manager to show up...
Just had that in a VM yesterday.
I wanted GRUB, but all I got was the BIOS menu over and over again until I finally hit the right millisecond.
oh man. I don't know if this is a new one or not, but it's gold.
read the hint text.
