I expect them to lie, just not this blatantly (:
@JacobJohanEdwards can you remove your both comments in the unity question? it already has way too many comments :D
@jjohanedwards ^^
@StefanoPalazzo I fixed that page
which one?
The Apple page, let me take a screenshot
(I'll be back in a second)
haha :D
brilliant
'we'll sue them and win'
now that's what I call vertical integration
I looked at their list of software. Maybe one day i'll make one of those wildly popular infographics which show use v. contributions from apple apple.com/opensource
You can't just list a wall of Perl and Apache modules and have that go towards your count
APPLE Y U MAKE ME SO ANGRY
"grep"
is on that list
awesome
I'm willing to bet there's probably only a handful of projects at best on the Mac.
I don't even know who they are trying to fool with this
FreeBSD is one
I wonder whether they give and take equally from each other in the relationship (:
or if freebsd might be doing, oh, say all the work :)

@htorque Which Unity question, I've got a few of them. :X

A: How do I build Unity from source?

Stefano CandoriBuilding Unity from Source (current development version 12.04) Last content update: 8 Jan 2012 In this guide you will build a separated version of Unity trunk (locally installed to your home directory), so you don't need to worry about corrupting the version from the Ubuntu repositories and you...

thanks
@htorque No, thank you, the updated answer looks great
would look better without the !!! Workarounds !!! :D
but that's nothing i can change
there's probably some switch or make target to build without the tests but i got no idea how it's called
(so you wouldn't need to edit the CMakeLists.txt)
Is it said somewhere that if someone gets a deputy badge, try not to decline his flags as much as possible?
Or am I flagging stuff correctly?
BTW, I have set myself a restriction on flagging.
>>If a question is a dupe but has been answered, don't flag it.
If not, flag it. :D
@jokerdino Flag it
Having two dupes, even with accepted answers, helps no one
we can always merge questions together
14:54
Hmm
so just flag with something like "dup and merge"

Q: Move gnome shell window close button to left

GaidinTo be clear I'm not talking about the windows controls, but the little x button that shows up when your in the "expose" windows mode in gnome shell when you mouse over the activities button. I've already used gconf to move the actual windows controls over to the left (ubuntu's change got me used...

If then, ^
@JacobJohanEdwards Yes, it's one way to go. I tend to do it based on answers
If there is one with an outstanding answer, and the other with a crap answer that the author accepted, I'd prefer to close them
if they're both good, then that's good enough. But it's always a case by case basis
14:59
Yeah, I'm well aware of the flag handling :)
It's a good read for users too, I'm glad they have the moderators newsletters

Q: How do I get the minimize, maximize and close buttons to the left in GNOME Shell?

CasperWhen I try to move them to the left the minimize and the maximize buttons disappear and the only the close button moves to the left.

I can find the same question rephrased in every way possible.
@htorque /home/htorque/build/unity -> $HOME/build/unity, /home/htorque/source/unity -> $HOME/source/unity
15:29
Sup guys
Vacation's over, then no time for anything, lol.
Tell a user that he should use something currently in alpha state is something we should avoid right? ie: use 12.04 "because it may solve our issue". That is seriously not good advice without knowing the level of knowlege the user has.

Justinas DūdėnasI wanted to get a program, which is installed via bzr. I have successfully installed bzr, but it asks me to authenticate (despite that I`m logged in to Launchpad). Bzr help seems to be oriented towards devs, and says nothing about logging in. How should a home user use it? Is there a GUI?

@JacobJohanEdwards answered it .
18:20
Is @Oli still around? htorque asked me to check with him if I could get some rep back on a question I put a bounty on, where the bounty would go to an inactive user.
I didn't actually award the bounty just yet.

@WarriorIng64 can you post a link to the question?
@StefanoPalazzo Here:

Q: How do I build Unity from source?

htorqueI'd like to know how I would build Unity from source code in the current development release. Please cover the following topics: Which packages are needed to compile Unity? Where would I get the current source code? What are the steps to actually configure and compile Unity? Is it possible to s...

ah this one. the bounty would go to Cam?
...I guess?
well it's 6 days left
Er, wait, no, excuse me
Sorry, didn't see that one
No, the bounty would go to the answer at the top
That one's a Community Wiki post
19:04
ah, so that's fine then. Six days left for someone to give that post an overhaul
(or make post a new answer)
you could add a notice to the top answer too, saying it's out of date and needs to be redone
So I should wait then and see if someone posts a non-CW answer? The top one looks like it should be good now for 12.04, but I'm not sure based on what htorque said about whether I should actually award my bounty to it
at the moment, it kind of looks like the top answer is correct and final
oh I see - confusing bounty there
Sorry if I got you a little mixed up...I just woke up not long ago, still not firing on all cylinders yet
if the answer doesn't work, there's not much you can do apart from telling people to make it better :) but you need to find out if it works in any case
maybe tell people to post a comment about whether it works or not. since it's a community wiki, you can just add a big notice to the top
I'm actually using 12.04 right now as my primary OS at the moment, but I'm not sure if I'd want to verify this myself and risk a reinstall.
19:09
> This answer might not work at the time you're reading it. Please post a comment after you try it.
That sounds like a good idea, I'll add it
Should be set for now. Hopefully someone will give it a whirl
I'm actually not quite sure about the moderator policy on removing bounties
I just assumed we're not supposed to do it unless there's a special reason, like an objectionable bounty description, or if a questions gets deleted due to a new policy, things like that
part of the reason you can't cancel a bounty is also the fact that it motivates people to post answers. if you do the best job, you get the bounty - regardless of whether your answer actually works or not. you're encouraged to give it a shot
unless it's got less than +2 of course
Makes sense
I'll have to leave for now, my family's coming up to my dorm to visit soon...thanks for the help
sure, have a good day :)

wait, so @WarriorIng64's question is "How do I award a bounty to a CW post"?
19:22
uhm, what happens when you award a bounty to a CW?
remind me... :D

yes
@WarriorIng64 > "If you award it, that user will get the reputation, regardless of community wiki status" (via Lord Atwood)

jrg
jrg
Hello.
20:59
StackAd is broken on 2buntu...
Investigates...
jrg
jrg
are we using the old URL for it?
Old URL?
jrg
jrg
old meta post.
StackAd should use the newest one.
It's designed to do that automatically.
Stupid Wordpress cache...
jrg
jrg
hangon, i'm not sure that was it. :P
21:09
What was?
I'm clicking "Delete Cache" repeatedly... nothing.
jrg
jrg
`# modified: wp-content/themes/wptuts/header.php`
`# modified: wp-content/wp-cache-config.php`
git says you did something
I did.
I added the JS to the header.php file.
But the cache won't update clear.
jrg
jrg
just want me to rm the cache files themselves?
has ssh now
Wait... you guys have SSH access now?
jrg
jrg
yeah, marco gave it to us a few days ago.
21:11
Cool!
jrg
jrg
currently, roland and i are the only ones with access.
It's okay... I tried another page.
StackAd is working again.
jrg
jrg
first thing we did was put all of 2buntus stuff into a git repo, and then pushed all 50MB of it up to a server so we don't have "problems"
you are right!
Ah, so my change needs to be added to Git then?
Where is the repo. hosted?
jrg
jrg
bitbucket in a private repo
changes committed and pushed.
21:12
Ah, I assume that StackTack is broken too then?
jrg
jrg
yeah, that happened when we switched the theme.
and i just haven't gotten around to fixing it
Ah, what's the URL of the repo... I can't find it.
jrg
jrg
the 2buntu repo?
jrg
jrg
i need to add you to the repo on bitbucket, but it's here - bitbucket.org/jrgifford/2buntu
21:16
@jrg Okay, I'm user george_edison there.
jrg
jrg
ok, you're in
and... now i can't add any more people to the repo. i've maxed everything out.
i gave you R/W permissions
Thanks!
Does Marco's server pull changes from the repo. automatically?
jrg
jrg
nope
Should it?
Would that be a good idea?
jrg
jrg
i'm not sure.
we'd have to do something with branches
where master is stable, and develop is develop
otherwise we could run into problems.
which SSH key do you want me to add?
you've got a ton of them on your launchpad. - launchpad.net/~george-edison55
21:20
SSH key... for what?
If you need my public key, I can give you that.
jrg
jrg
for the server. if you're going to do anything with that git repo, you're going to probably want to be able to pull changes in without waiting for roland or myself.
Oh, pull them on to Marco's server?
jrg
jrg
Yes.
Not sure if this is the right format but...
jrg
jrg
ssh2? thats.. interesting.
21:23
Generated with PuTTy :)
jrg
jrg
check your IM, sent you user/hostname
Oh... heh - I thought that was an email address.
jrg
jrg
haha yeah.
Thank you.
21:37
@MarcoCeppi: Haaaalp! SSH woes on your server :)
What did ya break :)
jrg
jrg
I can't add his ssh2 key to the server
It looks like an ssh-rsa key
jrg
jrg
is there a special way to do that?
@GeorgeEdison try now
21:40
Nope, still asking for a password.
I'm using Windows :)
PuTTy?
You've got a screwy SSH pub
21:42
Would you like me to try another key?
Is this better: paste.ubuntu.com/797623
much better, try now
PuTTy doesn't like the key :)
(This is annoying - but I know it's not your fault.)
Would you like me to generate you a key/ppk
Sure.
That would be awesome.
We're putting a "Generate Key" button directly into the CP to avoid this problem for windows users :)
21:45
Thank you, I appreciate that.
I'll email you the full key, address? I actually think I have it
Sighs Minecraft was only played for two hours. So sad...
tnt was embarrasing...
@William There's always next week :)
Yep.
@MarcoCeppi: It worked!
21:55
Isn't that true of life...
Thank you for generating a keypair.
@GeorgeEdison no problem!
What's the non-filled in star for?
i always get confused: are unity-lens-* or unity-place-* the right/new packages?
@William Where?
jrg
jrg
21:59
@William for the post with 5 stars by marco?
thats a pinned post.
meaning its important.
Oh.
How do you pin a post?
jrg
jrg
you have to be a mod.
Yeah, only mods. can pin messages.
(They can even pin their own messages.)
Well, mod or room owner.
Oh, good point.
jrg
jrg
22:02
for the purposes of our discussion, same difference. :P
Stack Alert needs an icon.

Q: Ubuntu installer stuck!

User17It's stuck at "Configuring target system" It's still stuck as of now (I launched the installer from Ubuntu after clicking "try Ubuntu") How can i solve this? Should i stop it? And will it hurt my system? P.S:I clicked install alongside windows.

I'm not very good at this sort of thing :)
Maybe it needs "Stack Exchange blue".
jrg
jrg
22:16
is that comment there OK?
the SE blue would help a lot.
i'm glad i don't have experience with borked system installations (only VM :D).
jrg

i like that.
Not sure about the white text.
jrg
jrg
looks a little cheesy. too much perspective.
22:25

Yeah, not so good.

Yup.
I'll stick a '4' in it :P
jrg
jrg
that'll work
22:31

jrg
jrg
I like it.

jrg

all clean @WarriorIng64. :)
I actually think I'll get that lens...I ssh into my school's servers now and then to remotely test the code I have to write for my class
jrg
jrg
i ssh into my own computer, because i can
or something like that. ;)
I can't seem to find any questions to answer :S
@jrg That's the best reason to do anything, generally
jrg
jrg
i do ssh into my VMs though, trying to do anything serious via a tty without copy/paste is painful. :P
mainly because i'm too lazy to type in the long list of build deps for stuff...
@RolandTaylor fail... :(
23:34
I actually write all my C++ on my own machine, test to see it works, then use sftp to put it on the school's server. Then I ssh in to test it on their own compilers and tarball it
Is there a way to get a lens to start without having to logout/back in or use unity --replace?
if you know the command for the lens you can run it manually
That's just the same as the package name usually, right?
...apparently not
23:41
Hmm
it's a dbus service I think
or something like that
some of them are python files and you can run them from their location
you would need to get the package info (in synaptic) and find the contents of the package to find the right command to run
Nope, found it again lurking in my system folders
whereis is magical

Q: dconf profiles missing

keepitsimpleengineerThe dconf admin users guide says "dconf stores its profiles in text files in '/etc/dconf/profile/'" but on my oneric Unity laptop, there is no /etc/dconf directory. Have profiles been deprecated or where are they now?

I hate questions like this... but I answered anyway
Couldn't get it to run though, so I ended up doing compiz --replace anyway and got another crash out of it
Seems to be up now though, but it's currently empty
what lens is it?
23:51
Granted, I didn't read the directions first
Hmm...~/.ssh/config doesn't exist on my system and setting HashKnownHosts no in /etc/ssh/ssh_config didn't seem to have an effect...I'm logging into my school server over ssh then re-opening the lens to test, btw
I'm probably doing something wrong again
