Q: How come my questions aren't being answered?

Script Kittenwhy aren't my questions being answered? It seems like they aren't noticed... Most of my questions have no answers or votes. Am I doing something wrong?

Hi
anyone here know anything about networking?
@thebluesquirel depends on how technical it is . Our resident networking pro isn't online right now
hi
I don't think it's "super" advanced...

My internet's very slow.... I'm guessing it has something to do with "frame"...?

Any idea what's causing the errors?
21:09
Well . . . no idea what frame is . . .
does all this look ok?

could it be any of this in /etc/sysctl.conf?
@thebluesquirel the ifconfig wont show you errors , it's only statistics

@Serg Hey, speak for yourself!
@thebluesquirel Nothing wrong there!
Is there anyway to make my internet faster?
@thebluesquirel here we go... you installed the 3rd party driver for bcmwl?
@thebluesquirel Could you post the link to your question here so I can have a look at all your info?
21:18
I can't post questions any more...
@thebluesquirel Why?
I kinda lost some reputation one day and got mad so I posted a rant...
@thebluesquirel noob! :+) Now answer my question ;-)
My reputation dropped and then increased....
OK, forget about that: Have you installed the 3rd party driver for bcmwl?
21:20
not sure...
if he answer that I am going to clubber him :=)
there's 2 sets of drivers In the "drivers' section
well see what
sudo apt-get purge bcmwl-kernel-source
sayds
Already did that about 2 times...
those errors you posted look related to the 3rd party driver
(and the one that is bugged for your nic)
The other driver is extremely slow
and unstable
SE down?
oh did you post the ubuntu version you are usng?
21:24
how do I find out in the terminal...?
I know there's a command but I keep forgetting...
@muru Not that I can see...
cat /etc/lsb*
@muru nope(?)
DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu

DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu 15.04"
Hmmm. I'm getting Cloudflare pages
Haven't upgraded because I'm waiting for the newest one
21:25
@thebluesquirel 15.04 is not supported any more
@muru I get a list of questions :=(
@thebluesquirel You should have installed 14.04 LTS (Long Time Support) then...
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW that'll be worse for his wifi :+)
21:26
What's a proprietary driver
Yep, it's back online now,
@thebluesquirel a driver made by a company like nvidia or amd
Ah
not open source I think..?
@thebluesquirel You're running an unsupported version of the OS, So I'm bailing...
so not a native driver (one made by the owner of the operating system or the community)
21:27
Can I upgrade to the beta of 16.04?
@thebluesquirel reason I asked: the bug has a note that kernel 3.19 works with your card
but 15.04 already has 3.19 I believe :P
I don't like 15.04 code's name
So i'm waiting for 16.04...
Is there a way to upgrade early?
Will upgrading to 16.04 help?
@thebluesquirel Nope, that's unsupported too...
ok
What should I do?
Install a supported OS like 14.04 or 15.10
21:35
Why isn't 15.04 supported???
@thebluesquirel cuz a non LTS only has 6 months
I would install 15.10
then compare your WiFi speed with cabled speed and if you still have problems it's your router or ISP
Ok thanks
@thebluesquirel This is why:

Q: How do I decide what version of Ubuntu to install?

dn-ʞɔɐq ɹWThis question is here just to avoid you choosing the wrong Ubuntu version number. So, this is not about: Which flavour of Ubuntu to choose? nor about choosing the Server or Desktop version... nor Which desktop environment should I install? nor Which Ubuntu is best for my hardware? nor What...

21:37
Quick question
@thebluesquirel Have you read the above already and upvoted?
:P
Why can't I run unity on my netbook?
is 1gig of ram not enough?
@thebluesquirel Apparently you did not read above...
That answers all of those kinds of questions.
Likely it's not your RAM (although 1GB is very little) but your netbook's graphics capacity.
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW dont push it :=)
21:39
Unity is very graphics intensive.
Have a look here and especially read the first answer, section How to ask good questions. You ask very short questions, which are unanswerable with the info you give, except this one which is a duplicate waiting to happen. (Just my 2 cents. Disclosure: I'm not a mod) — dn-ʞɔɐq ɹW 28 mins ago
@thebluesquirel that is not alot but netbooks tend to have low graphics too
So far I've been using lxde
Also true! -----^
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW You don't need to add a disclaimer to your comments. You are just as qualified as I am to answer things ;)
(listen to the guys in blue! They're the smartest among us!) @thebluesquirel
21:40
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW mods are nothing special :=) you can clubber them too if you want
Mods are not super users.. just normal users invested with more work.
(work we can't get out of either! :P)
@Rinzwind Clubber/clubber/clubber Rinzwind! ;-)
hmm I might keep my head low after asking a mod to help with a edit :-P
?????
@Rinzwind ????
So is there a list of rules for chat?
user136984
What do you guys think of this by the way? I think it's beautiful:
user136984
user136984
:)
@ParanoidPanda starts of too slow for one :+
But very cute :+)
user136984
@Rinzwind: I like music like that. Reminds me of sort of 70s 80s music (when music was good)...
user136984
21:51
@Rinzwind: Beautiful is a better word I think.
@ParanoidPanda Be honest: You're just looking at this for the girls! :P
@ParanoidPanda When I was a kid and you weren't born yet!
:D :D :D
gtg
Thanks for the help
user136984
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW She is very beautiful, and that is partly true, but I also really like the music.
user136984
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW I'm not saying I was alive then, just that the music of that era was good! :D
@ParanoidPanda I like Babymetal more. 3 times the cuteness. And louder.
21:54
@ParanoidPanda I like this better
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW DOOKIE!
Only cd I liked from them :P
@Rinzwind yup...
user136984
:D
And Prince's let's party ... like it's 1999 is good too!
and don't forget about this one! Very good!
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW I am the biggest Prince fan here :=)
saw him live almost 40 times
1st time august 1986 ;=)
user136984
21:59
@Rinzwind I think I prefer her solos to BABYMETAL when there are 3 of them.
@ParanoidPanda listening to gimme chocolate :+0
user136984
They are just different styles.
Babymetal. The only 3 16 year-ish old grrls that can start a mosh pit _O-
user136984
@Rinzwind: What is a "mosh pit"?
22:01
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW in regards to that I refer you to Orgy - Blue monday :=) youtu.be/aJZTfl3DmCU
@ParanoidPanda how to explain that one :P
@Rinzwind Yes! Very good!
@ParanoidPanda here is a VERY BIG ONE: youtu.be/fgBseiTlDTE
he calls it a "circle pit" ;-)
ooooooooh wicked! I was at the concert :D that's weird. Just randomly picked one on YT
this is a better one: youtu.be/vXmFibhbkhI
I think I found a bug in Roundcube...

@ParanoidPanda Here is the biggest single hit ever
user136984
22:11
@Rinzwind: Ah, I see... :D
Oh hang on... I wonder if a sequence column in PostgreSQL has an incorrect value.
That should be relatively easy to fix with psql.
user136984
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW: Well, that's strange... :D
user136984
Anyway, goodnight guys! :)
@ParanoidPanda Which one? (Use replies)
@ParanoidPanda Pumpkin!
user136984
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW: Your latest message to me. :P
22:15
@NathanOsman that is probably it :p
damn those grammies need more spice :P
@Rinzwind Yup, that was it. A sequence number needed to be reset.

hello everyone
@shaggy Hi.
tried asking in unix/linux chat, but noone really seems to fancy an answer or even much acknowledgment that my question even exist. haha
@NathanOsman well hello
@James I have done the unthinkable - I'm learning Angular :D
@shaggy That room isn't very busy and there aren't too many people around on a Saturday.
@NathanOsman eh I figured, I saw that there was more traffic here, so now.. here I am :D
anywho... was just curious on peoples .02$.
Which question?
22:40
am looking to fully take the plunge, I need some new hardware(my mac's logic board went out on me ...) trying to find a nice portable laptop with solid linux hardware support, a good community behind it, and most importantly financially practical(ont he cheaper end)
I was originally looking into the thinkpad lineup, but now have discovered the chromebook option
and was just curious what people had to say about that, if there were any natively installed chromebook useres on here, or if someone had another suggestion
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW exploring this now. thanks for you input backup :D
@shaggy ChromeBooks are notoriously difficult to install Ubuntu on.
They don't support grub and you need stuff like crouton (which is off-topic here as not developed by canonical)
Also stay away from anything that isn't listed here like Kali, Mint, ...
@shaggy: that's about it... Oh, and get 14.04.4 LTS (=Long Time Support)
(unless you like installing everything again every 6-9 months)
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW yeah that was definitely something I was worried about, I don't know if chroot would hinder my learning experience or not. But I really am just trying to find a modern, portable, hardware supported linux machine, that I will be able to learn a lot from as far as desktop linux goes.
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW I don't and thanks for the heads up.
Read this too:
22:49
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW thanks for the resources, and I will do my best to remain relevant and to stay on topic. as far as distros go, I figure Ill be trying out both Kubuntu and Lubuntu(if machine is older) and picking one of those 2 I assume.
Good idea...
@Mateo: translating... What does "Get Terminal" mean? (Download, open, something else)
system76 looks like some decent hardware, but If possible, since this is my first linux machine, I would like to either buy second hand or something with lowerend hardware, to keep the price down. Was just curious if there were any users on here with a laptop similar to what I'm looking for.
either way, thanks for the help, and info.
23:04
@shaggy How low end and how old are you willing to go?
@shaggy Dell machines work pretty well (at least they did for me).
well originally I was planning on just getting and old ibm/lenovo thinkpad(t61/x60).. then I discovered the c720 chromebook and kinda have been looking for something more modern(than the old thinkpads) since
Although the last release (Ubuntu 15.10) has really messed up the audio on that machine.
Dell's Inspiron line is usually pretty affordable - and up-to-date.
@NathanOsman yeah I think I'll be going with 14.04 LTS if anything... I'd be fine with dell, everyone I've ever owned had battery issues but other than that, if its nice it portable I'd be open to it as long as there is hardware support OOTB
For the record, I haven't had any battery issues on this machine. And it was manufactured in 2011.
I can still get about an hour on a full charge.
23:11
@NathanOsman well thats good to hear, I could be totally wrong about that, I just had 2 older XPSs and they had some heating issues, and a hotpotato battery lol
@NathanOsman Do you charge and discharge regularly?
(or leave it plugged in all the time?)
^^^
@shaggy Don't! Then you'll have battery issues with any machine!
I always fully charge and fully discharge my batteries everytime..
@shaggy Aah! Sorry!
Good boy! Who's a good boy??? ;-)
23:13
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW haha its okay I can see how that would be misunderstood
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW I keep it charged and perform shallow discharges once-in-a-while.
It gets used around the house quite a bit - usually connected to AC but occasionally on battery when a plug isn't easily accessible.
When it comes to Lithium-ion batteries, shallow discharges are better for the battery cells than full discharges. The optimal storage charge is about 70% of its fully-charged capacity.
@NathanOsman Yes! Never charge completely!
Two things damage lithium-ion batteries: frequent full discharges and heat.
But modern batteries never discharge completely!
Anyway, I NEED A SMOKE!
23:15
If you can avoid both, you'll have many happy years with your battery :D
Also, for what it's worth, batteries are replaceable components.
@NathanOsman thats something I was unaware of, I've herd of never completely discharging but never to not fully charge. makes sense
So if one breaks, you can usually replace it for a fairly reasonable price.
@NathanOsman this is true
just being a linux machine, I would hope to have a reasonable amount of 'unplug' time .. I mean thats part of the importance of the portability
@shaggy Indeed. Every once in a while (perhaps once every two months, depending on how much you use it), a full discharge is recommended to ensure the battery level indicator stays calibrated. That way, the "remaining hours of use" message stays accurate.
and linux is relatively resource light.. maybe not ubuntu.. but in general haha
23:18
Yes, true :)
@NathanOsman very good info, thanks for that.
My one suggestion when looking for a new laptop is to make sure you're happy with the parts that can't easily be upgraded (video card, CPU, etc.). Memory and HD can easily be upgraded down the road but other components can't.
looking at inspiron 11 3000 series. pretty close to what im looking for. celeron 2 core processor. would really like a little more RAM, but other than that everything else is light enough and the price is right
I bought a Mac Mini with 4 GB of RAM soldered onto the motherboard. Now there's no way for me to add more :P
@NathanOsman indeed. Im not looking for anything to fancy, I wont be gaming or rendering anything graphic intense. I just want a solid machine to surf the web, write code on, and most importantly immerse myself into the world of linux natively.
23:22
In that case, the only thing you really want to look for is RAM. That's going to be your biggest bottleneck, likely.
@NathanOsman I worked for Apple as a supplier: never buy any Apple products etc...
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW ...unless you have to, like me :D
yea if I could run 8GB, that would be great.
@shaggy Buy a second-hand Vista PC with 4G of ram and run 14.04.4 LTS Desktop...
I do lots of programming, web development, etc. and 8 GB has almost always been enough.
23:23
(upgrade the HDD though)
The only time I ever started suffering from lack of RAM was when I was editing 4K video in Kdenlive.
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW eh some of their older machines went strong, but I agree at this point in there history and honestly thats what I'm making the switch from. My 15" MBP needs a logic board replaced..

@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW We have an HP laptop from 2007 that shipped with Vista and now has 3 GB of RAM. Still runs 15.10 with no problems.
@NathanOsman Yeah, 3G is harder to find then 4G and the extra cache is nice! :P
23:25
It shipped with 2GB and I threw another 1 GB in after buying it.
Most people will double the RAM when they upgrade...
(well... I did)
I put it in myself :D
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW yup thats what I did, I upped to 18gb in my MBP, and well.. needless to say, From now on, 8gb will suffice
it was unnecessary
^--- does that template look cheesy enough?
as ubuntu users, are you able to watch full 1080p video?
@NathanOsman nailed it
if you were going for cheese :D
23:31
@shaggy Yup, I can even get 4K video playing fine.
It struggles to play 4K video @ 60fps though :D
@NathanOsman sweetness, is that native, or do you have to download other repositories
Woow! Total lightdm crash...
log out and everything!
@shaggy It didn't require any customizations on my part.
I have a high-end Radeon video card though - no idea if that made a difference.
@NathanOsman I just tried to find cheesier, but it's difficult, so I'd say: yes, cheesy enough!
@shaggy Yes, on en external monitor
@NathanOsman it does: I need to enable my nVidia card to drive my external monitor to be able to go that high...
Intel just won't cut it! :(
My Mac Mini is the only machine I've ever owned that could play 4K @ 60fps without skipping.
And it has integrated video :P
23:40
@NathanOsman wow thats impressive. whats the card?
or actually specs on the whole box?
One sec...
It was the cheapest Mac I could get my hands on :P
@Rinzwind o/

@Seth that is an invite to a free smack >:-D

Q: how do I make sda1 or sdb1 bigger

MikeHi I'm working with a cloud service and when I clone a VM (This is for Google) I type lsblk after I ssh into it and I don't see why the partition sda1 is only 10 GB which is only 10% of what I paid for. I am not a linux admin at all and I really don;t know what this means. Why is the partition ...

@Rinzwind hey! I have a better memory than that :P
(iirc?)
@Seth No, you didn't.
:D
You're closer than I am!
@ByteCommander @cl-netbox @A.B. German translators needed! (cc:@Mateo)
I know, but I can't cross the border until I get a passport >.<
23:55
:-)
@NathanOsman You don't have a passport???
(In Europe, only hillbillies have no passport)
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW Nope.
Does Canada do the "enhanced" drivers license thing?
@NathanOsman Too expensive??? :D
23:56
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW not true. In Holland a driver license can be used as an identification for Belgium and Luxembourg
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW The US is the only country within thousands of miles from here. And if I don't ever visit, it should come as no surprise I don't have one :D
In my state I can get a drivers license with an RFID chip and use that to cross into Canada (and Mexico iirc)
@Seth Yes.
@Seth WTH is an "enhanced" DL?
But I also don't have a full driver's license >.<
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW I think it has an RFID chip. It's good for the land crossings.
23:57
@Rinzwind Yeah, but everyone has one at home in a drawer...
(that't what I mean with "carry")
Yeah, we have those too.
@dn-ʞɔɐqɹW nope. we also have the "identification card" that is only for Holland itself It is a cheaper version of a passport
They're about half the price of a passport though :P
Might as well get the real thing and be good for 10 years.
@Rinzwind Do you have a passport? Does your mum have one?
23:58
I'd personally just get a passport. I don't like the idea of my DL having a chip in it.
@Seth a chip is no probs!
We have 2 id cards in the Netherlands cuz if we had one the law states the government has to issue them for free. Now they can charge for it.
Plus if you change your address, you'll have to pay to get a new driver's license.
an RFID chip is!
You can read those from a mile away!!!
(with the proper antenna and output power)
*cough* lead card holders *cough*
23:59
I forget you Europeans have other chips.
I have cuz of work. My mum has 1 too; she went to Israel last year :)
But I know a lot that do not have one
