8:11 PM
do i lose data in a partition if i resize that partition

@juggernaut1996 unless you use Mac OS or mess it up, not at all

@Zacharee1 roger that

8:28 PM
Ubantu again...

o/
Today is "work on scope" day.

cool
io
:p

@mateo is there a list somewhere of scopes that ship with Ubuntu Touch?
...and somewhere I can check to see what others have created?

oh, the ones on there I can get to you - but for all the existing in the store:

Ah, good idea.
Thanks

8:34 PM
there was just a handful that aren't listed that come preinstalled
apps, twitter scope, today, nearby, ubuntu store, music, video films, photos, news, 7digital, amazon, bbc, bbc sport, calls, dictionary, ebay engadget, etsy, facebook photos, open library, reddit, shopping (amazon), weathere channel, wikipedia, yahoo finance, yelp, youtube
lol, my new scope is listed first because of the alphabetical listing

@Mateo put a space before the name and it'll make sure it comes first :p

:P
Do any scopes allow you to login to customize results?

@RPiAwesomeness I still have you scope installed ;)
there is a authorization
like the youtube, and twitter you can login to - see your fav's on youtube, and post on twitter

As far as I can tell, there's no scope for Google Drive.

aw, ubuntu should know better:

8:43 PM
I think Google Drive would make for a nice scope.

@Mateo That's irony

Slight change of plans. Today is "upgrade the laptop to Wily" day.

@SmokeDetector LOL
It's Michael again...

@NathanOsman that would be sweet

That guy really needs to learn when to comment

8:53 PM
display the pictures, play the music, link to the files, ect. would be award winning if you could do it :)

Startup Disk creator is so difficult to use.
It doesn't work with a completely blank flash drive for starters...

huh
i usually just get mad at it and use dd
or a dvd ;)
dvd's are easier here because I still have a stack of them

I don't want to waste a DVD for this :P

they have a dual purpose as flying disks ;P

@hbdgaf Heh, yeah. I love those first binges :)

8:56 PM
@Mateo frisbees?

Lol.

that is the brand name...
trademarked

Wut.
That is way too slow for a USB 2.0 flash drive.
Oh lol. It jumped to 86%.

@NathanOsman lol

just like

8:59 PM
It's writing at 7 MB/s.

At least it's not duct tape. Could you imagine if we couldn't say duct tape?! #MythBusters https://t.co/GqoEckQClT
they censored him saying "bubble" on tv

lol

Q: Remounting is not supported at present. You have to umount volume and then mount it once again

SwagatikaI was not able to chmod a file in my /dev/sda3 on my Ubuntu12.04 system. This is what I get when I try to see its information: $ mount | grep 'media' /dev/sda2 on /media/sda2 type fuseblk (rw,nosuid,nodev,allow_other,blksize=4096) /dev/sda6 on /media/sda6 type ext4 (rw) /dev/sda3...

@Mateo eerily enough, DVDs double as ninja stars ;) youtube.com/watch?v=NhYH26KTNbQ

@hbdgaf ◔_◔

9:12 PM
:)

9:25 PM
"Boot error"
Well, I guess that flash didn't work.

@NathanOsman I've been getting a lot of those recently. Did you use unetbootin?

Startup Disk Creator.

ohrly?
huh, it always gave me that with unetbootin but worked with startupdisk creator..

user136984
I love this! :D

user136984
9:34 PM
And this is great too! :D

Anyone want to take over?
where would i find /tmp. at im very new to linux — Npost 1 min ago

user136984
@muru: No :P

Sigh

user136984
9:50 PM
@muru: But I don't think you will get anywhere unless you find out what the currently think as it seems that something in the core of their knowledge is wrong...

@ParanoidPanda Nah, I'm giving up. Flagged as not-an-answer, somebody in the review queue will probably pick it up

user136984
@muru: I've done the same... :D

user136984
@muru: I tell you though, this is the craziest question I've seen in a while! :D

Yeah, how can I make toast using a water pistol?
4

10:10 PM
@terdon trade water pistol for toaster? Or even just a campfire?

@Seth No cheating.

aww

user136984
@Seth: I just saw something slightly disturbing which has now scared me away from a certain AU page... Aren't posts flagged up as offensive not meant to show their contents? I guess maybe this post was just deleted and not flagged up for some reason...

@ParanoidPanda link?
I thought that is how it works.. moderators see everything though so sometimes it is hard to tell.

user136984
@Seth: I don't know, have a look here...

user136984
10:13 PM
It should stop you from seeing it immediately, though allow you to go into the edit history...

Now that's what I call dedication!

hmm, it was deleted properly.

We can probably see because >10k rep. Just like any other deleted post.

@terdon right, but stuff deleted as spam or offensive used to say "this post was deleted as spam or nonsense, use the revisions history blah blah"

Yeah, just saw the original.
Still, you can still see the original and not the spam notice, right?

user136984
10:15 PM
@Seth: It still does everywhere else unless this was deleted through other means...

@terdon you can, but not my default.

user136984
Anyway, it fills up the whole page and is a big nuisance as well as being offensive... So just a small notice with a link to the whole stuff would still be nice...

But, @PP, why would that scare you off? Surely you realize that nothing is actually deleted, right?
@Seth Huh? I thought us mods still see the original. I remember being confused by it at first since I couldn't seem to find how to get the spam message to show up.

@terdon yeah, mods see the original.

user136984
@terdon: Well, because there is so much text there I don't know if there is, say, a malicious image hiding amongst it, because it would be rather hard to tell with all that text and the person could have more malicious intentions than are currently apparent...

10:18 PM
@ParanoidPanda But, but, if the image is "malicious", your browser has already seen it. This isn't Snow Crash, it can't infect you, just your computer.

user136984
That doesn't mean I should go there more than once... Maybe it didn't load properly or something the first time, I don't want it again! :D

user136984
But it would still be nice for there to just be a little notice instead of that text (though of course the notice provides a link to the original text).

user136984
Was this deleted through the means of a offensive flag being validated then?

user136984
Because then I'm going to complain about it showing the original immediately instead of the notice...

Do try to keep your paranoia internally consistent. You said you trust imgur since it doesn't allow gifs, you know that any image on that page will be hosted on imgur and yet you're still afraid.

user136984
10:21 PM
@terdon: I don't trust imgur, it's just better than nothing, and they've been finding so many vulnerabilities in PNG files lately...

user136984
Oh, and by the way, why are some of the links orange and the other black and bold?

user136984

@terdon , hey... hold my beer. I've got an animated gif rant. jkjk

@ParanoidPanda Oh man, I don't see that! You've probably been compromised. Quick, throw your laptop out the window!
2

user136984
@terdon: Why would someone hacking me mess with the styling of a page? :D

10:28 PM
the truth is, gather around people, in whisper: everything is vulnerable!

Why would anyone hack you in the first place!?
@Seth Nope. I have a computer in a secure room in my basement. It is never connected to any network and hasn't been turned on in the past 20 years.

lets ask terdon how many malware infested PNGs he has seen in his life.
@terdon doubly vulnerable, just not exploitable :D

:)

user136984
Well, probably some crazy Window obsessed guy posted that rude thing and then a hidden image amongst it so that he could target Ubuntu lovers...

user136984
That's one possibility anyway, another one is someone actually threatened to hack me (and a lot worse) a while back...

10:30 PM

Yeah, because people who post 100 FUs are just the type to take the time to set something like that up.
@hbdgaf Nice answer but how is that a reason to hack some teenager in the UK?

@terdon I was referring to the paranoia. "Oh noes, the spies are coming to my house"

user136984
@terdon: @Nathan could get drunk and use his script to gain access to my system and post Panda pictures on my behalf... The possibilities are endless! :P

Ah.

user136984
@hbdgaf: Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get you! ;)

10:33 PM
@ParanoidPanda Well, you're the one who chose to run the script in the first place mister selectively paranoid.
@ParanoidPanda Yeah, but just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they are, either.

user136984
Well, I don't run it any more.

Just install backtrack/kali. It's not like it has a known root password and runs everything as root anyway. #justsayin

No. Now it runs you.

user136984
So hopefully he didn't get drunk before I removed it! ;P

user136984
@terdon: Gulp...

10:34 PM
@hbdgaf Oh man, the number of crappy, script kiddie, hacker wannabie questions we get about Kali on U&L...

@terdon And I am GENUINELY sorry, although happy we're allowed to close them/migrate them here

Grrr

user136984
:D

I know people who've just backlisted the entire Kali tag.

@terdon Makes you feel any better, I'm playing with arch. The entirety of bt/kali should really just be an AUR with lots of bugs.
ducks

10:36 PM
:)

user136984
@hbdgaf: I have a bad association with ducks, please don't remind me of them.

<< looks for an animated gif of a duck ducking...
Think of it this way. Are animated gifs intrinsically vulnerable?

user136984
@hbdgaf: I assume that that is a duck ducking, but I cannot see it because of my image blocker so I will never know... :P

user136984
But I have an ever so slight phobia of ducks now, so I'd rather not see it... :P

I promise, it's not a duck ducking, but as said - you will never know XD

@terdon Nice.

user136984
Actually, you should mention ducks a few more times just to push the bad duck stuff off the "newest" section page of the search for this chat when searching for "duck"... :P

user136984
But maybe when I'm not here... :P

Hey Donald! Yeah? Duck, duck!

I'll get you a towel.

user136984
10:43 PM
@hbdgaf: Why? :D

A reference lost. It's fine.
@Oli would kill me for even knowing it.

user136984
You know, I'm eating over my keyboard right now and crumbling... I wonder if this is such a good idea... Well, I guess if I put all the contents of a sandwich into my computer, it will just become a big sandwich one day that doesn't taste very nice! ;D

@hbdgaf Daffy?

I'm often daft

user136984
@terdon: You made me think of Daphne and Josephine there! :D

user136984
10:49 PM
@hbdgaf: Are you as daft as a draft though?

user136984
(Don't ask what I am talking about, I really have no idea... :P)

'.'

user136984
And I was thinking of a draft in terms of an email by the way... :P

user136984
VTC this question as off-topic.

user136984
Hmm... Strange... @Oli hasn't said a word...

user136984
10:52 PM
I hope we haven't scared him away... :P

...aaaaand we're back.
@ParanoidPanda His timezone is probably heading for bed right about now.

user136984
@Nathan: By the way, I'm not not using your script because I am worried about you getting drunk... :P

user136984
It's due to some technical difficulties...

user136984
@Nathan: Aren't you going to make a flavour of Ubuntu with is George-orientated? :P

@ParanoidPanda I don't think you need to worry about that... I don't drink.
@ParanoidPanda No. I don't have time for that.
(Nor bandwidth.)
Technical difficulties?

user136984
11:02 PM
@Nathan: It keeps on crashing, and the page goes with it...

@ParanoidPanda Crashing?
Hang on, AFK.

user136984
@Nathan: Yeah, it suddenly just stops working and then the whole page crashes and it outputs some funny messages in debug mode...

user136984
But when I removed it the crashing stopped, though adding it back in again makes it come back...

user136984
11:14 PM
Just a quick question, I found that there is some software in the Ubuntu main repository which depends on something which it does not install as a dependency, can I submit a patch where I just add it into the control file? And I don't have to do it for every control file if they change? Or is this generally not the kind of thing you submit patches for?

user136984
They just seem never to want to fix it so I thought I could just fix it and all they need to do then is to accept it...

user136984
What does the command command do by the way?

user136984
Right, well, if anyone wants to reply please ping me...

11:30 PM
Back now.

user136984
But goodnight for now (and I think I may have accidentally put @HeatherBrown on ignore)! :)

It's missing a dependency?
If it needs the package to run, yes, that's a bug.
But if not, it could be under Suggests or Recommends.

user136984
No, it needs it to run without giving nasty errors and breaking.

Which package?

user136984
I have reported it but they haven't done anything about it and it was a while ago I filed the report, so I was wondering, is this the sort of thing that one can submit a patch for?

user136984
11:32 PM
@Nathan: It's the Ubuntu Software Center.

Which package is it missing?
And which version of Ubuntu are you experiencing this on?

Q: What is use of command: `command`?

PandyaRecently I found command: command which has no manual entry but help displays as follows: $ help command command: command [-pVv] command [arg ...] Execute a simple command or display information about commands. Runs COMMAND with ARGS suppressing shell function lookup, or display in...

user136984
@Nathan: It's the ubuntu-sso-client-qt dependency on Ubuntu GNOME 15.10.

user136984
@Seth: Oh, well that didn't come up in the search! :D

Oh Gnome. Can't help you with that one. I have no intention of installing Gnome on this machine :P

user136984
11:36 PM
@Nathan: Well, I don't see why it wouldn't be missing it on the normal version of Ubuntu...

user136984
Why can't you do it in a VM anyway?

I don't have the bandwidth to download the 15.10 ISO for Gnome.
Remember, I'm the guy with the 1 Mbps connection?

user136984
Ah... :D

I'll grab the ISO the next time I'm at a coffee shop with free WiFi :P

user136984
Well, you could at least test if it's in the normal flavour of Ubuntu first if you can get access to that easier...

user136984
11:38 PM
I don't see why the control file would be different for different flavours.

user136984
Anyway, must go to bed! Goodnight! :)

It isn't.

@ParanoidPanda gnome isn't normal ;p it was probably assumed

But Gnome messes up changes quite a few things in the system.

to be included on on regular ubuntu

11:40 PM
Doesn't Gnome have their own Software Center program anyway?

@NathanOsman not that I've seen
@NathanOsman KDE has Muon

@NathanOsman now they do, yes. It's called "GNOME software" (gnome at its best lol). But it's pretty new iirc.

@Seth how new is "new?" 15.10 doesn't have it

@Zacharee1 Very new.

11:50 PM
:p
@Seth what's the reason for the limited edit window in chat and comments?
I'm back with the script, and I see no one else has it :p

because letting you edit it at any time opens the door for lots of abuse. comments are meant to be short and sweet and then disappear, so you shouldn't need to edit it after ~5 minutes. chat messages aren't formal either. Just enough time to fix simple mistakes, but not enough to cause problems.

@Seth That makes sense, but what sort of problems?

I'm on my laptop, one sec. I'll get the script installed.

@Zacharee1 you say something, things happen, you go back and say the opposite. Stuff like that.

I must have it open on the other machine...

11:56 PM
@Seth But chat has edit history :p
@NathanOsman ?

You can't be connected (with the chat script) from two machines at the same time.
I'd have to close the one on the other machine.

ah
