@NathanOsman Can you not pick your civ at the screen? I assumed you could or I would have offered to set yours for you.

The host picks.

oh. sorry :/

It's okay.
It picks randomly otherwise.

1:00 AM
@Mateo @hbdgaf sorry guys the internet went off the other night :(

D:
also: \o

o/
@NathanOsman that sounds pretty cool.
Even though I won't be playing it, I hope to see some peek with screenshoots or videos from it :D

1:27 AM
The food is coming, the food is coming, the food is coming to my mouth!
See you! :P

:D
have fun.
@NathanOsman so, I'm going over the replay, and after I destroyed your first attempt at a second civic center, did you realize I had an attack force on the way? I didn't know this until after the fact, but your immediate second attempt (with a guard) passed right next to my attack.

2:01 AM
*silence reigns almighty*

2:25 AM
BREAK THE SILENCE
*smash*

BOOM.
@Mateo I have to go in about 2 minutes.

*tinkle*
*CRASH*
@NathanOsman thx :p

Should I quit now?
And get our final score?

not that that did any good besides fishing...

We were pretty evenly matched.
Anyway, supper.
Thanks for playing.

did you have a civ center hidden back there?
or did i destroy them

Yes :)

2:34 AM

@Mateo ohhh
@NathanOsman @Mateo what do you think about these templates? getmdl.io/templates
I want to try the Material design out, but idk which to try

3:15 AM
eh, I don't particularly like any of them.
but I don't really like templates anyway so maybe I'm biased.

4:18 AM
When's the next 0ad game?

The 7th is the next scheduled one.
Sometimes you can nab someone here though :)

user139252
Feb 7th... In my calendar :D

@HeatherBrown I'm sorry. It's Jan 17th, not the 7th. My bad. (See the pinned message to the right -->)

user139252
Guys... Never let me do this again, but I just did the greatest bad thing...

user139252
I cooked a quesadilla in bacon grease

4:22 AM
:O

user139252
And it is delicious

o_O

user139252
Mix of pepper jack, mozzarella, and Muenster cheeses

Have you ever bought a quesadilla from one of those Mexican food trucks?

user139252
Nope

4:28 AM
They taste like heaven.
If heaven has a taste anyway.. :P

user139252
I avoid street food. I don't know who's touched it

user139252
I also tend to avoid restaurants

After working at one I'm not surprised.

user139252
I go to Chipotle because I personally know most of the employees at my local one

user139252
And if I ever get asked out, I'll be polite and go

4:31 AM
@HeatherBrown and you can verify the food practices :P

user139252
But I don't usually choose to let others touch my food :p

user139252
Yeah, there's that too

@HeatherBrown meh. If you're going to do bad thing, do it right.

user139252
?

@HeatherBrown oh this.
I'm on my phone so replies are a pain

4:33 AM
@JourneymanGeek are you using the new UI?

user139252
I'm also on mobile

Chatsey.

ah. You should totally check it out, it's 100% better than even chatsey :)

user139252
Was my quesadilla not unhealthy enough? :p

4:40 AM
@Seth I'm away from my PCs. Currently at a military camp doing nothing worth redacting. :p

@JourneymanGeek ah. That would make it rather hard to enable :/
well I'm off to bed. G'night folks!

user139252
How can I enable the new mobile ui?

7:36 AM
David Bowie died :( Another icon gone

I really liked his new album :P

Docker Hub is so buggy.
Anyway, goodnight all.

8:00 AM
Morning folks =)

1 hour later…
9:24 AM
@Takkat so much Bowie on the radio <3 Makes me sad though

@Rinzwind no radio at work here... so no sadness (apart from me superfluously having birthday again)

spammers getting desperate...

Awh Yeah!
Official blog:
> "...Greetings Everyone! I am proud to release the first beta of OpenShot 2.0 (details below), and start a much wider testing effort. For all you supporters with early access, I will be sending a separate update with links to installers..." - OpenShot Video Editor | Blog: OpenShot 2.0 - Beta Released!

I've always liked openshot ... nice app - but just too full of bugs to be fully useable in a large project. Lets hope v2 is much better. Its been a long time coming!

10:27 AM
@fossfreedom Openshot 1.* is bugy? Maybe it varies from machine to machine, because most of the time, it was stable for me. Only times it crashed, was because I tried to run too many app simultaneous with OpenShot, with only 4GB ram.

Whenever you introduced different types of sources encoded in different ways ... it usually couldnt cope - crash bang wallop usually.

10:40 AM
Gotta drive, again! Really wishing my job managing Linux web-servers, would start tomorrow...
Bye!

I don't feel that this is really an answer... More of a bug report if anything... What should be done about it?

A: How to make Nautilus icons in Gnome 3.16 less fat?

George Bungarzescuin Ubuntu 16.04 there is no such option as the ui was...heavy simplified Nautilus 3.16/3.18 support only "small" value for leftmost position of zoom slider and the small means 48x48px Hope it will be fixed

its a comment... useful enough to retain.

user136984
But not as an answer... About a release not even released yet that I am not asking about...

user136984
He basically just said that in the next release which hasn't been released yet that there is a bug with this.

user136984
It doesn't really feel like an answer...

11:20 AM
refresh your page

user136984
@fossfreedom: Ah, I see, you have converted it into a comment.

user136984
Also, why in the "votes" section of one's profile does it not show votes on comments?

good question well asked ... meta it ... although I expect the answer being "comments are transitory - so what is the need etc etc"

Paranoid PandaIn the votes section of one's profile it displays all votes on posts, however it does not display votes on comments, why is this?

I just recieved some spam on another machine, so I put the source in an rtf file and sent it to myself here to submit it to a spam report service, however when I saved the file on the other machine it reported to be 4.0 KB, when I moved it to the Trash it became 8 KB, when I downloaded it on this machine it became 4.1 KB, and now that I opened it and have it downloaded it is 4.2 KB, so what's happening?

@ParanoidPanda 1000 vs. 1024?

user136984
@Zacharee1: What?

byte counting :p

user136984
Right, so but do you think that this could be anything to worry about? I mean, sending myself the source of some spam in an RTF file couldn't possibly harm me could it?

no....
I don't think that's possible

user136984
12:39 PM
So why is the file size changing?

@ParanoidPanda so corruption or sentient virus :p

kos
@ParanoidPanda Is the other machine running Linux as well?

user136984
@kos: No, it's a Mac.

kos
@ParanoidPanda Make sure you calculated the MD5 hash of the file on the Mac in text mode.

Q: X server can't open display in Ubuntu

user3495404I'm not very familiar with the X server display but I'm trying to use a debugger program called DDD and it needs X server to open up to use it. I get this error when I try to run ddd: Error: Can't open display: XX.XX.X.XX:0.0 I set my DISPLAY variable to my IP address but it still won't open....

kos
@ParanoidPanda (md5sum -t [...])
Please close this: askubuntu.com/questions/719808/using-variable-in-sed-command. Do people have problems expanding variables only when using sed? :D

user136984
1:54 PM
@kos: The MD5sum according to VirusTotal of the two files is not the same.

user136984
Nor are any of the hashums seemingly...

user136984
@kos: I'll have to go back to the Mac later on and see if it does this with all RTFs.

kos
@ParanoidPanda If you're not sure about how that program is doing the check do a manual check. On Linux the MD5 hash for a file is the same if calculated in binary mode and in text mode, but on other systems is not. Mac OS is based on BSD, I'm not sure if in BSD that matters or not.

user136984
@kos: Ok, well I just created a new RTF file on that computer and put some random text in it... And it behaves in the same way as the other file did.

user136984
So I'm going to assume that everything is fine. Unless I notice something else odd that is.

user136984
2:08 PM
@kos: Thanks for the help anyway! :)

kos
@ParanoidPanda I don't think it should, however the MD5 hash should be calculated in the same way in Linux and in Mac OS (unless you're using Mac OS 9 or an older version).

user136984
So do you think that there could be some internal corruption or something causing this malfunction?

user136984
I mean, I think as it does this for all RTFs that it's not going to be that that RTF file was somehow malicious.

kos
2:26 PM
@ParanoidPanda Yeah, maybe not, but I am curious as to why it changes, I don't see the reason why it should. You're using Mac OS X right?
Can you post the output of head -n 1 file | hexdump -c?

user136984
@kos: Yeah, ok I'll give that a go later and let you know the result. :)

user136984
Is that the same on Linux (the command)?

user136984
And do you want it for the malicious source, or just any old RTF file because it doesn't seem to matter and I don't really want to drag that malicious stuff out of Trash...

kos
2:44 PM
@ParanoidPanda If you're using Mac OS X that shouldn't matter, unless you are using some Windows compatibility mode of some sort... It's the same, you can do that either on Ubuntu or on the Mac, for whatever file that was initially created on the Mac. I just want to see the line-ending.

user136984
Oh right, so I don't actually need to run this command on the Mac, I can just do it on Ubuntu?

user136984
@kos: Well, running that command on the file on my (Ubuntu) machine gives the output of:

user136984
0000000   {   \   r   t   f   1   \   a   n   s   i   \   a   n   s   i
0000010   c   p   g   1   2   5   2   \   c   o   c   o   a   r   t   f
0000020   1   0   3   8   \   c   o   c   o   a   s   u   b   r   t   f
0000030   3   6   0  \r  \n
0000035

user136984
I suppose it doesn't really matter which machine I execute it on because the files remains the same, just the calculation is different (possibly)...

kos
@ParanoidPanda There it is. The file uses CR/LF (Windows) line ending. Run dos2unix file >newfile and the MD5 hash will by all odds match.

user136984
2:52 PM
@kos: Ah, I don't seem to have that program installed.

kos
@ParanoidPanda Then sed 's/\r$//' file >newile

user136984
Should I now replace the top bit with:

user136984
{\rtf1\ansi\ansicpg1252\cocoartf1038\cocoasubrtf360
{\fonttbl\f0\fswiss\fcharset0 Helvetica;}
{\colortbl;\red255\green255\blue255;}

user136984
?

user136984
Or is that the whole thing?

kos
2:55 PM
@ParanoidPanda Did you run the sed command? Then you should have a new file in the same directory called "newfile" whose MD5 hash should match the MD5 hash calculated on the Mac.

user136984
Right, well that is the contents of the new file generated, I will check the MD5sum of the file on the Mac...

user136984
@kos: Ok, yes, the MD5sums match! :)

user136984
And I think so do the other hashsums...

kos
@ParanoidPanda Mistery solved!

Q: "Unanswered" forgotten

Afternoon. ;)

user136984
Anyone have any idea with this crazy question? :D

There is a reason why I'm doing it, I'm not just crazy...

7:05 PM
@ParanoidPanda How come you have a file in ~ with a forward slash in the name?

user136984
7:18 PM
@kos: Didn't I explain in the question? In error.

user136984
@kos: Well, I don't actually have it there yet, I just want it there.

kos
@ParanoidPanda Ok I misread the update, so you told the server to look into the wrong path and can't change it? What is that about exactly?
Just curious, also maybe someone knows why. :)

user136984
@kos: Oh, it's because of a script that manages the config file that I wrote... It may have been a bit buggy, or at least some of its safety measures are proving to be a little annoying... :D

user136984
Oh, it's fine, there is a very manual and slow way of fixing this issue, and I see that I'm going to have to take that route... :D

kos
Alright then. :)

8:11 PM

user136984
It says he was last seen 2 hours ago, but he hasn't been in at least this chat for ages.

user136984
Are there keyboard shortcuts to copy and paste in Terminal by the way?

8:47 PM
Yes, Ctrl+Shift+C to copy and Ctrl+Shift+V to paste.
Also, Bluetooth is weird. I have my phone sitting next to me on the desk about four feet from the receiver and I get interference sometimes. I go into a bedroom 12 feet away with a wall and closet in the line-of-sight and it works fine.

crl
Have a stupid problem with nginx link, proxy_pass isn't working with anything not even a local http://$host:3000/ technically I can proxy any site right?

user136984
@Nathan: If "CTRL + C" were to have a label in say a right-click menu, would it be "Cancel" or...?

user136984
That is in gnome-terminal.

user136984
Or really any Terminal.

Ctrl+C sends SIGINT to the active process.

user136984
8:59 PM
So what do you think a suitable label would be?

user136984
"End" maybe?

"Interrupt" would probably be correct.
SIGINT is a shorter way of saying "the interrupt signal".
Note that it is possible for a process to register a signal handler for that signal. It can then do whatever it wants when it receives the signal.
Hectane (one of my apps) will close the mail queue, write to storage, and safely exit when it receives the signal.

user136984
Ah, I see, so it could just pretend to close if it wanted to (to a degree)?

@ParanoidPanda Something like that.

@ParanoidPanda He's busy with RL...
@NathanOsman Is the case of your desktop open???
@ParanoidPanda Gnome system monitor uses "End process" (cc @NathanOsman)
"Interrupt" sounds too much like "pause" to the average <s>luser</s> user

9:07 PM

@Zacharee1 CSS is good! That works without scripts!
:P
Here is a good example of a site that even has drop down menus and uses absolutely NO scripts!!!

But that's 80s
Someone didn't want me to do that
it looks terrible

@Zacharee1 yeah! Gibson is an old fart like me!
He believes in black backgrounds!
CRT-monitor-style!

ew

It's designed to look old-fashioned, but still uses very nifty new technology!

9:16 PM
I can clearly see the flicker on those things

@NathanOsman I'd bet on your router, if you're using 2.4GHz. Bluetooth is literally a few KHz away from 2.4 wifi, depending on the channel.

@Zacharee1 flicker???

@Fabby CRT?

@Seth Could be - but then wouldn't it be even worse at close distances?

@Seth Good idea!
@NathanOsman It would get worse and better depending on the distance...
(sinusoidal wave --> harmonics)
Is your case open?

9:18 PM
@NathanOsman not necessarily.. it all depends on how the RF bounces around your house.

Do you have an FM radio around?

I suggest setting your router to 5GHz and then see if bluetooth then works better in that area.

Q: Is suggesting the use of another Linux distribution valid?

FriarTuckMuch of what I know has come from using Ubuntu but also several other distributions. I recently suggesting a user use Puppy Linux because they needed something that could fit on a CD (<700mb). I was informed it wasn't appropriate for askubuntu. Is it okay to point people toward other distribu...

@Fabby Nope, case is shut and no FM radio nearby.
The Bluetooth receiver is behind a plastic panel though.

@Fabby FM radio is a looong way off though, I highly doubt it would be interfering.
(if that is what you were suggesting)

9:27 PM
@Seth An old-fashioned telescopic antenna between source and destination can produce weird harmonics...

@Fabby ahh, ok. That makes more sense xD

(I was talking about the physical device, not an FM transmitter...)
:P :P :P

I was like "harmonics from FM? Really?" lol

:D :D :D
You a physicist?
@NathanOsman plastic shouldn't interfere, unless it's cut from a tape bag...
Microwave oven around?

Yup, but not in use.

9:30 PM
That's about the last thing I can think of, except WiFi A/B/G which Seth already brought up...

We don't have a cordless phone either, before you ask :)

@NathanOsman and not sitting in-between source and destination neither?

Nope.

I'm all out of fresh ideas...
Huge speakers that are misaligned (like fell on the floor) ?

user136984
@JacobVlijm: If you don't see this one too late, it might be one for you. :)

9:33 PM
@NathanOsman Uranium-ore??? :D :D :D
I'm going to stop thinking about this: back to the review queue...
(before I bring in cosmic rays, tin foil hats, Aliens, ...)
;-)

@Fabby Think about this: Verizon blamed us customers for the problems we had on 5.0.1. Now that we finally have 5.1.1, there's about a 5x performance increase.

@Fabby the green dot is where I have it on the desk.
Pardon the primitive drawing :P

user139252
What are these pings?

@HeatherBrown No one's pinging you..?
@HeatherBrown (except for now)
@HeatherBrown (and now)
@HeatherBrown (and... now)

user139252
9:38 PM
Why are you pinging me?

:p

user139252
I'm in a meeting :P

Well get off the chat

@NathanOsman good enough...
and green is where it doesn't work and red is where it works... (good choice of colours! :p ;-))

It's orange :P
(The other dot.)
But yeah, I just picked them at random.
I told you it was a primitive drawing :)

9:40 PM
Does nobody seriously have any idea for this?

user136984
:)

Obligatory: salmon is a colour.

@Seth Salmon is a delicious food

@Zacharee1 Don't ping people unless you need them...

9:42 PM
It's also a colour.

@Seth and a smell!

@Seth colour? Where are you from?

OK, enough of this: back to the review queue as I've got no further ideas for Nathan's problem anyway!

user136984
@Zacharee1: Iceland, where all the fish are from. :P

@ParanoidPanda :p
@Fabby Must I point out the times when you and @ParanoidPanda ping-spammed me? :p

9:46 PM
Did I start that???
I'm getting old: my memory is fading... :D
I can't even remember ever giving this answer and apparently someone just read it and upvoted...

user136984
