@ParanoidPanda : another possibility .. did you try playing around with unity-teak-tool ?
@NathanOsman already had true multi window mode for supported apps (so quite a few) since KitKat
user136984
@cl-netbox: Nope...
user136984
@Serg: Thanks! I'll take a look! :)
@ParanoidPanda then try it out : sudo apt-get install unity-teak-tool :)
@ParanoidPanda ... besides ... you might like my newest answer ... =)
@ParanoidPanda what are you playing with ? That "unity bar showing up when dragging icons " question ?
11:14
@ParanoidPanda : have you seen it ? ... a not very usual thing from me ... it was accepted a moment ago ... :)
user136984
Anyway guys, it's settled @kos @Fabby, the OP has spoken and my answer got accepted... So seemingly even though it didn't work for all of you, it worked for this guy... If you want I can provide you with a video of what I see?
why the heck I get all the even pts numbers in sakura ?
hmm - the real answer is "yes you can stop it" ... but you'll need to modify the drag-drop behaviour within the nautilus source
user136984
@fossfreedom: But it's not just nautilus... It's also the desktop and any other application that you can drag with...
then ... unity itself ... there is rarely a "no its not possible" answer - everything is possible - its just how much effort you want to put into it to make it a positive statement.
user136984
11:18
@cl-netbox: I looked in Unity Tweak Tool and couldn't find anything that does anything different from the System Settings in regard to this...
@ParanoidPanda okay ...
user136984
@fossfreedom: It may not be good to edit Unity itself... Especially when the package gets updated... Things might go wrong... But if you've figured it out and you want to write an answer then that's fine... But I'd say it's probably too much effort...
@ParanoidPanda too much effort - yes indeed ! Is this a serious problem at all anyway ? :)
user136984
Oh dear... This is a funny one! :D

Q: Installing Ubuntu on school computers

bob coolI was wondering if it would be possible to install Ubuntu on a school computer without the admin being notified

user136984
11:25
@cl-netbox: Well, I tried to remove it because I wanted a different Launcher... Ended up corrupting Unity and getting GNOME! :D
@ParanoidPanda I think it is better to decide what you want before and then choose to install ubuntu or ubuntu GNOME ! ... that's what I do ... :)
hmm - that launcher Q is a duplicate anyway
user136984
@fossfreedom: I know... I just couldn't find you duplicate...
user136984
Well, I think it is anyway... I remember a very similar question to this...
I've duped it

This StarOS guy seems to me very cynical. It's a first time I see a user that I don't like on the site

Good morning!
Hey, shouldn't 5 delete votes on an answer be enough?
@ByteCommander voted to delete that one

user136984
@cl-netbox: Oh, which new answer? :)
@ParanoidPanda my latest :)
user136984
@cl-netbox: Do you mean this one? :)
user136984
11:56
+1 :)
@ParanoidPanda yes ... very unusual for me ... but fun to answer anyway :)
@ParanoidPanda Thank you very much ! :)
user136984
@cl-netbox: You're welcome! :)
Hello @ByteCommander @hg8 :)
user136984
@hg8 @HeatherBrown: I finally hit 10k! :D
12:13
So let's get the party started for @ParanoidPanda !!! :D :D :D
user136984
:D
user136984
Sometimes when I install new software it tells me that I am getting an upgrade for some of the dependencies from wily-updates, however when I then go and look at the changelog for that package which apparently just got upgraded, there doesn't seem to be anything there that wouldn't have been installed... So this confuses me, is there a way of releasing an update but then not upgrading the software on the users' computers unless the upgrade is required?
user136984
Or am I misunderstanding what is going on here? Can you get only upgrades for packages from wily-updates, or can you also get new ones installed?
... oh oh oh , what a boring party for @ParanoidPanda ... is this all you've got to give ... you panda lovers out there ??? :D
user136984

user136984
12:22
@ParanoidPanda Congratulations! (insert Cliff Richard here)
user136984

@ParanoidPanda sooo nice ... :)

Yeah, The Telegraph seems to have a thing for Pandas... :D
user136984
Does anybody know by the way if firewalld is better than gufw?
user136984
12:30
And does anybody know if firewalld has a GUI?
@ParanoidPanda It is not better or worse - it is just different to use - but I configure ufw in terminal. :)

@ParanoidPanda Look at the revision histories: your "full" answer came 20 minutes after OP's "full" answer. I'm not saying that you copied him, but it's not true that your answer came before his one.
Anyway o/ all
Hello @kos my friend ! :)
user136984
@kos: I posted my answer after his one, but I made my answer (not posted, made) before he posted his...
kos
kos
@cl-netbox o/
user136984
12:34
I wrote the full thing before he published his, then when I saw his I removed everything but the no (the first revision you see), and then later on I added it back again...
user136984
Anyway, I'm happy, the person who asked the question seems happy, can we just forget about this now?
@ParanoidPanda When you wouldn't have started this discussion again, it already would have been forgotten ... :D
kos
kos
@ParanoidPanda Sure, but I don't get why you removed it in first place. I guess to not steal his answer since it was posted first, but why readding it then? It would have been better to leave it from the start, at least it would have been clear that you wrote the same answer at the same time. Anyway you can do what you want with your answers, but be aware that as it currently stands it really looks like you stole the other answer (again I'm not saying you did, it looks like).
Ah they rolled back the changes to the reputation's font!

A: Please unbold the reputation next to a user's card

Shadow WizardWell, this is still bold however "dimmed" by making the color lighter: All in all, fair compromise in my opinion.

Should (98 Q) become a synonym of (1400 Q)? Please vote ^
user136984
Oh I wish that religion and politics could just be replaced by Ubuntu! The world would be a much happier place then! :D
Argh! That question and the first comment below it make me really want to facepalm!

@ByteCommander I guess refers to system uninstallation and refers to software uninstallation
@kos No, refers to both system and software uninstallation!
So either review all questions and retag half of them with (better, but huge work!), or just make them synonyms.
user136984
The is just more specific...
13:01
@ParanoidPanda But unfortunately also magnitudes smaller.
So... The lazy way or the best-practice way?
kos
kos
@ByteCommander See . What you're saying makes sense, but maybe 's excerpt should be changed as in , for the same reasons. Synonymizing would worsen the situation.
@ParanoidPanda True words spoken ! :)
@kos Yes, I agree. But has 7.5k questions which nobody bothered to sort out to those two system/software tags!
Btw, do we have a system-uninstallation tag at all?
kos
kos
@ByteCommander I think I missed the real point. Do we need that tag at all? :D
Maybe you're right, just synonymizing the two since most of the questions tagged are actually about software uninstallation, the problem is that those actually about system uninstallation will become mis-tagged
Which leds again to splitting into two tags for the future like in . Maybe ask this on Meta?
user136984
Is anyone like me running Ubuntu GNOME 15.10 with GNOME 3.18?
user136984
13:14
Who is currently here that is...
Nope. I'm boring and stay with Unity.
But I add XFCE now and hope it will reduce my RAM usage...
kos
kos
@ParanoidPanda Ubuntu 15.10 but GNOME 3.16.4
user136984
Ok, that might do...
user136984
@kos: What do you get when you do what I say in my question here? :)
@ByteCommander This is not boring - this is a CLEVER decision ! :)
13:24
@cl-netbox Well, I'm just installing xubuntu-desktop and cinnamon... :-)
I was planning that long ago, but finally made the decision now.
@ByteCommander not a good idea ... breaks many little things ... you will see the issues time after time ...
I saved the installation output in a file, so that I can remove exactly those newly installed packages if I need to.
And until then, I'll enjoy Cinnamon's nice look and XFCE's nice lightweightness.
Switching to Cinnamon now, BRB
kos
kos
@ParanoidPanda What fossfreedom said in the comments... What happens if you run the application with GTK_DEBUG=interactive?
@ByteCommander this is not enough ... it breaks several things deep down in the system you cannot revert easily ... better install xubuntu alongside ubuntu ...
kos
kos
^^ Second that, I've never managed to install a different DE without leftovers from the previous DE
13:31
@ByteCommander I tested the same with gnome-desktop on ubuntu several times in various editions - and as I like 100% secure working systems without issues on my production machine, I stay with Unity because this DE is designed to integrate perfectly with ubuntu !
@kos completely agree with you !
kos
kos
@cl-netbox Unity on Kubuntu = Kubuntu logo at boot up (that probably could have been fixed) and stuff broken around, mostly icons, Cinnamon on Unity = lots of broken stuff an leftovers from GNOME packages.
@kos yes ... so @ByteCommander should select a DE of his choice and install the matching distro or stick with original ubuntu which IMHO is the best anyway, because developed for being what it is : a complete great OS - no less no more. :)
kos
kos
@cl-netbox In this case I'd install Ubuntu Server and then Cinnamon on top of it, that should avoid any breakage due to Unity.
user136984
@kos: Tried that, nothing happens...
@kos way better than on desktop version but ... I tested this as well : less issues but still some issues ... there are parts of unity, or better on unity depending things, in server version as well
user136984
13:46
@kos: What is the package name for the GTKInsptector?
user136984
Maybe it's not installed or something silly like that...
kos
kos
@ParanoidPanda Sorry, I never used GTKBuilder, I have no clue. I just told you what I'd have tried.
user136984
I don't think that they are the same thing, are they? Wait... I'm really confused now, I'm going to go and have a look at the documentation again...
kos
kos
@cl-netbox That sounds weird.
@ParanoidPanda probably libgtk-3-0 - its probably a missing schema file that needs to be added to the package
13:50
@kos cannot explain this better - sorry - but the installed desktop (gnome) did not work without issues on ubuntu server ...
Currently it works. :) I'm away...
@ByteCommander currently ... :)
kos
kos
@cl-netbox Can you give an example? I'm just curious.
@kos cannot remember exactly because I tested this last year - I think one example was the keyring ... seahorse issues ...
user136984
@kos: Yeah, gnome-builder is a different package... GTKInspector should be installed by default while the other is not...
user136984
13:53
Unless I am misunderstanding you? :)
kos
kos
@cl-netbox Ok, np, it was just out of curiosity.
@ParanoidPanda I don't know what you are missunderstanding, I didn't say anything about that. :D
user136984
Well, you said:
user136984
9 mins ago, by kos
@ParanoidPanda Sorry, I never used GTKBuilder, I have no clue. I just told you what I'd have tried.
user136984
But I wasn't talking about Builder, I was talking about Inspector, and the former is not installed by default but the latter is... And they are also not the same thing so I got a bit confused by what you said @kos... :D
kos
kos
@ParanoidPanda Ah sorry, yes, Freudian slip, I meant GTKInspector. :D
user136984
14:04
Ah! :D
@ParanoidPanda "What's the bug though? That there is no Debug section or that the documentation is wrong? Or..?" ... as I said above - probably missing the schema file from the gtkinspector source
user136984
Right, so where should I report it?
user136984
I mean under which package.
like I said - libgtk-3-0
user136984
I can only find gtk+3.0 on LP, will that do?
user136984
14:11
If that's still not right can you just send me the right LP page?

user136984
@fossfreedom: No, I don't see how the two are related...
message 8 in that link - they got the same error
user136984
@fossfreedom: I think that they are saying that they are getting that error in console as it is an error you should only get when you are not in console, so I still think that they are talking about something else.
user136984
Plus, this is not a bug, it's just how it works.
what if you use xterm instead of gnome-terminal - any difference?
user136984
14:58
I don't seem to have that installed...
user136984
No wait... I do, and it doesn't make any difference @fossfreedom.
no idea - throw a decent sized bounty on it. Probably a code change required. Nothing reported about this on the project website - github.com/Treri/cmatrix

@ParanoidPanda besides @MarcoCeppi being the juju wizard of ubuntu, he is one of the moderators on AU since 2011 ! :)
user139252
@Kos what if you remove all x-org packages, then install a new DE? Since DEs, kind of as a rule, require X, removing X will also remove everything that depends on X, e.g. all bits and pieces of a DE
user139252
Then, installing a new DE will also reinstall your needed X packages
user139252
Right?
Hello @jokerdino @Rinzwind @Takkat and other wonderful people. I came to say hello. You have been very helpful. Just wanted to tell you that.

@HeatherBrown I'm not entirely sure, indeed it sounds like it should work. But OTOH even purging Unity sounds like it should work and it doesn't. I'm not even sure where's the exact problem in first place, I just know it breaks. In any case at that point as I said before (not sure when you started reading) one can just go for Ubuntu Server, can't [insert pronoun here]?
@fossfreedom does canonical provide virtual containers? :P
user139252
@Kos I just saw that installing a new DE keeps leftovers from the previous one
15:58
good question as always ... well asked as always ... dunno !
@fossfreedom I assume no.... I think I would have known :X
0
A: Where's the best place to download Ubuntu virtual machines?

RinzwindNowhere. Canonical does not provide containers so any location you download these from is dubious. You should make the 1st one yourself and then clone from that one.

;-)
I remember sometime in the past they had a website where you could run up and trial stuff on ubuntu. Don't know if that is still going - forgotten which website as well. Getting old... memory going.

Q: Is there a license on all the code put on SE?

Paranoid PandaBy putting code on SE (by posting it in a question or answer or another form of publicly posting it on the site) is the code given some sort of license automatically if one is not declared by the owner? So what I mean is for instance if person A wrote their own program and posted it as an answer ...

@katyasehgal Hi, thank you for the kind words.
yep, foss covered it well with that link. CC-BY-SA is the answer.
user136984
What if it's a script with like three lines? Like a bash script or something which anyone could make without looking at the one posted here?
user136984
16:48
I mean, because you can't put every command under that license just because it's posted here...
literally anything you post - comments, questions, answers are covered by the same license
user136984
So if I were to be the first person on the site to post the command "echo "pandas" > file.txt" and then somebody else on the internet also posted that code somewhere, if mine was before theirs, I could sue them for not crediting me? :D
user136984
Well, I hope that's not the case or the internet is in big trouble! :D
you can't sue ... only SE could ... but in reality why would they? SE would get very bad press.
one key issue that we have to be aware of - copying from other sites to here - you cant offload and relicense someone elses work. CC-BY-SA doesnt allow for this.
wikipedia is a good read here - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_Commons
user136984
But you can't put a license on things like numbers... And they are posted here too...
user136984
16:59
I can understand for larger bits of code which could be considered something which one could own, but no matter how small, SE owns it if it is put here, then that's completely ridiculous! :D
kos
kos
@HeatherBrown Nope it doesn't work; removing Xorg (sudo apt-get purge xorg && sudo apt-get --purge autoremove) removes ubuntu-desktop, but leaves all the GNOME packages etc, and there's no way to remove them other then by removing them manually so I guess that's a no deal.
user136984
@fossfreedom Now that is totally ridiculous and a sign that the world really has gone mad... But what if it was posted somewhere else before, would I then get into trouble even if I hadn't been on the other site?
user136984
So if I once read somewhere that I have to execute a certain command (in some documentation) to do something, is it illegal to then post that command here without posting the site it came from too? Like do I need to post the first site that I found out about every command from?
user136984
Now this is just getting silly... And I don't see you or anyone else doing that...
@ParanoidPanda You don't have to do it, but it would be courteous if you did give credit back.
17:09
Hey folks
@A.B. Hi my friend! =)
user136984
@Terrance: No, according to the license I have to do it... But giving credit to all of the documentations for all the commands I use is a little bit over the top unless it is a rare command or it would be useful to link the documentation, but you don't link to the documentation where you read about the cd command in every answer you use it do you?
@Terrance hey my friend, how are you?

Today I've added my machine to a Windows domain :\
@cl-netbox o/ :)
@ParanoidPanda I want to know how you could copyright a command that can be used in an operating system? I don't think you can. That would be like copyrighting / patenting the act of breathing. I can see copyrighting actual encrypted code, but plain text code I don't think can be copyrighted.
@kos nice to read you :)
@A.B. read ??? not eat ??? =)
17:13
@A.B. I am doing good. How are you?
@cl-netbox Hey there! =)

user136984
@Terrance: Well @fossfreedom seems to think that SE own the world...
@cl-netbox :P :)
kos
kos
17:17
Seems reasonable. :D
@Terrance is samba a friend of you?
@A.B. Yeah, it works well for me. It plays nicely with my system. =)
How can I configure the default domain in smb.conf?
user139252
@Kos I did a purge of libx11* and libqt*. Bit of an over-kill, but it removed everything GUI related.
user139252
Meaning network manager, too
17:19
Default domain isn't longer possible
user139252
So, I had to reconnect my wifi manually through iwconfig and dhclient, but after that I was able to install xubuntu-desktop cleanly with absolutely nothing left over of Unity
@ParanoidPanda Thinking about that, King software tried to copyright the word Candy, and finally had to drop it because the term has been used sooo much that literally there was no way that they could do it. If they had succeeded then everybody in the world that even said the word would have had to pay them money or ask for their permission to say it.
The section libdefaults, I believe
@A.B. Let me take a look.
user136984
@Terrance: Ok, that is proof that the entire world has gone completely bonkers and it's time for anarchy!
17:22
@ParanoidPanda Exactly!
@ParanoidPanda Sorry, it was trademarking the word.
But same principal.
kos
kos
@HeatherBrown I see, clever. But at that point why not installing the server version directly? I guess you used that method on a fresh / semi-fresh installation, as using that method as you said it removes everything GUI-related.
user139252
You can do it to switch DEs if you are unhappy with your current one but don't want to have to do a reinstall, backing up all of your files and what-not.
user139252
As was @ByteCommander's case, I believe
kos
kos
I guess that depends on your usage case. Removing everything GUI-related for me would mostly mean breaking my installation (files aside)
@Rinzwind aren't there official images on atlas for vagrant?
user139252
17:30
Yeah, like I said, it breaks networking a little if you're on wifi.

@HeatherBrown: Anyway, no, I have no idea what you are talking about, Santa...
user136984
@jokerdino: I read it... But if you try and make everything on the site under that license then you are going to run into some trouble...
user136984
Nobody can copyright the word PANDA!!!!!
How would that happen?
Oh dear.. you can't copyright words.
user136984
@jokerdino: Commands are words... Code is just like a paragraph...
Code is like a paragraph of words? Lol.
user139252
17:58
@ParanoidPanda it's not about words, it's about content
user136984
It is, it is a certain order of them.
kos
kos
@ParanoidPanda Yeah, sorry but your point under muru's post about quoting the dictionary for the words you use is just ridiculous.
user136984
@kos: I know it's ridiculous! But that's what you guys are making me believe! And if it's true, then may Pandas help the world!
Maybe you should read about plagiarism, copyright infringement, et al.
user139252
When I get my GUI back, I will carefully explain to you how it works. I can't do this over mobile
18:00
Thanks @Heather.
But what happened to your GUI?
user136984
@HeatherBrown: Ok Santa.
user136984
I don't know why you want people to call you that... But... Ok...
user136984
@HeatherBrown: Ahhhh! I completely misread something you said! :D
user136984
You said "samba", not "Santa"...
user139252
@jokerdino I'm reverting from an experiment with @kos
18:03
Hope you get it back soon. Before panda munches a bunch more people.

user139252
Setting up the gtk packages,so it should be soon
You could have done the experiment in a virtual machine, no?
user136984
@jokerdino: You're next on my munchy list! >;P
I'm no bamboo.
user139252
@jokerdino yes, but I didn't have one installed,and I am impatient
user136984
18:05
@jokerdino: I know, you're much more filling! >:D
That reminds me to download 15.10 to test out our app.
Does anyone use unity-tweak-tool around here?
user139252
raises hand
Does it still work?
user139252
I'm still on 14.04, so yes.
Ah, right.
kos
kos
18:07
@ParanoidPanda We're not making you believe that. We are telling you it's ridiculous!
user139252
I'm waiting to upgrade until 16.04, as I had issues with Wily.
I should disable any PPA updates for 15.04 and older.
@kos I think it's a losing battle.
Ideally, I would want to install Ubuntu on bare metal but I am not sure how that would work with UEFI-boot and all.
user139252
I had to write a 10 page paper on copyrights and plagiarism for one of my degrees, so I will get to it soon :p
Now, I am going to have to install Ubuntu in a Fedora VM.
kos
kos
@jokerdino Yes, you're probably right.
18:11
There is a difference between ideas presented by words and just the words.
@jokerdino it works great without problems :)
@cl-netbox I am not so sure. I have Grub installed in an external HD and I can't boot into Windows10 via grub.
I'm just going to play safe and install it in VM.
user136984
@kos: All of you are completely ridiculous!
Aw, he's back.
@jokerdino in efi mode every system has its own boot loader installed to the same efi partition in a separate folder
18:14
That sounds about right.
user139252
Darn it, I think I want to revert my reversion...
user139252
XFCE was so much faster than Unity.
^^Agreed! That is why I am using XFCE4 now. =)
@HeatherBrown depends on the hardware ... on my machine unity runs fast as hell :)
@cl-netbox I'll get back to you about what kind of bootloader I have in this one.
18:17
@ParanoidPanda ??
Don't forget to scratch head and bang wall.
user136984
@fossfreedom: It was a joke in reply to what @muru said.
ok
on other matters ... fed up with firefox ... keeps crashing
Have you asked a question about your issue on the site?
user139252
@Fossfreedom Try Vivaldi?
kos
kos
18:29
@ParanoidPanda You know when someone is deluding thinking that someone else is doing what they're doing themself? There. And to highlight the fact that I'm saying this in a jokish-although-also-rhetorically-seriously way, since I don't want a flag on the message, I'll put a happy face at the end. :D
user136984
I was half joking you know... :P
18:44
@HeatherBrown I'm not, really, though you may like the human readable link of that CC license:P
kos
kos
@ParanoidPanda Yeah, me too, but seriously, try to think about the whole thing again in a more reasonable way.
user136984
I'm reasonable! It's SE that's not!
user136984
Anyway, I think that we should leave this subject now... :D
user136984
I'm installing 12.04.5 LTS by the way right now! :D
user136984
And it looks great!
kos
kos
18:50
@ParanoidPanda Obviously.
@ParanoidPanda Yes please. This is reasonable.
user136984
@kos: What flavour have you got by the way? :)
kos
kos
@ParanoidPanda You want to eat me?
user136984
Yes
kos
kos
@ParanoidPanda Bad flavour then.
user136984
That is clearly what I was asking, not what flavour of Ubuntu you have. :P
kos
kos
18:53
If you refer to the flavour of Ubuntu I use, that's GNOME. Didn't I told you that about an hour ago?
user136984
You did?
user136984
Have you got 12.04.5?
kos
kos
6 hours ago, by kos
@ParanoidPanda Ubuntu 15.10 but GNOME 3.16.4
6 hours ago, fair enough (I guess?)
user136984
Oh...
user136984
:D
user136984
18:56
You should really get 12.04.5.
goodbye :)
user136984
I think that 12.04 must have been the first Ubuntu I used...
kos
kos
@ParanoidPanda Nope, 8.04. I like abadonwares.
user136984
@cl-netbox: Bye! :)
@ParanoidPanda see you :)
kos
kos
18:57
Bye @cl-netbox o/
@kos bye :)
user136984
Where do you get really old versions like that?
kos
kos
@ParanoidPanda I'm trolling you. Do you remember things older then 2 minutes by the way?
