found this in a search cli.learncodethehardway.org/book
god i hate windows
rm -rf /
It removes -rf /
but what exactly is -rf /
someone on IRC told me to delete it. It's like sys32 on windows right?
lol
I thought they stopped people from doing that?
I'm not going to try it though
@MaartenWachters basically that means "Delete, recursively, and forcefully, everything from root down
15:07
So a no no
@MaartenWachters -r means recursive, so rm will go into subdirectories and delete stuff, -f will force files to be deleted. / is root folder, top folder, kind of like C:\ . However, new versions of rm warn people not to remove /
It shows warning
@MaartenWachters depens on the intention. If you intend to "Delete, recursively, and forcefully, everything from root down" then it is acceptable to use.
xieerqi:
$ rm -rf /
rm: it is dangerous to operate recursively on ‘/’
rm: use --no-preserve-root to override this failsafe
@Serg right. and as soon as you type it on anything else cuz you got used to it: system gone :=D
Don't wanna fuck up my partition. Took me weeks to get my Unbuntu and Kali running properly.
15:09
@Rinzwind Yup, that's how i got one of my VMs deleted, rm -rf /usr/bin :D
@MaartenWachters see... if you where be using "rm -rf /" on Kali it would be perfectly acceptible in any circumstance
4
lol
*ubuntu
Wouldn't it still delete your root?
I've only used Kali so far to spoof my mac for my labs but that's it
@MaartenWachters You've done good - before using a command , you asked for it's meaning on this site. People here don't troll (usually . . . )
Also to explain Rinz's comment . . . Kali is not quite welcome here
How come?
Aren't both good Distro's , albeit for diffrent purposes?
Like you can clearly see, I only just dabbled into Linux for my CS coure (first year)
15:12
This is Ask Ubuntu
not Unix and Linux
we frown at Kali
though there are those of us who use it
This is site for Ubuntu only. Also there's so many people who instal Kali or whatever other pentesting distro there are, and think they are l33t h@x3rs
too many people use kali without understanding the fundamentals ;)
^ that
@JourneymanGeek I need Kali for a course, so... :P
at least I learn :)
I only used it for my course
Spoof mac to overflow MAC buffers on a switch
Although I'm quite sure I can do that on ubuntu some way or another
15:13
Yup
@ThomasW. your case is different , you're a professional
just need to know what tool was used, and install it.
sudo apt-get macchanger isn't it?
@Serg True, though recently I've used Kali as an emergency Linux boot disk to repair a Linux filesystem xD
Gonna try brb
15:14
su@MaartenWachters sudo apt-get install macchanger
@Serg E: Erroneous characters in highlight, missing code formatting, please reanalyze your command
:)
O.o wut
So howlong did it take you guys to manage yourself with shell / shellscripting? talking basic levels here
@MaartenWachters hmmmm. No idea. I started with Xenix ;-)
I've literally never heard of that
15:17
I've been using Ubuntu for about a year and half . . . Been spending a lot of time on this site, answering questions, learning form other folks, learning through mistakes and stuff . . . I guess getting to 20k rep on the site kind of gives me title "experienced n00b" :)
@MaartenWachters it was Microsofts's 1st attempt to an operating system based on Unix
I've got no idea how I got 79 rep on this
@Rinzwind Oh i'm only a youngster. i've never experienced those days :p
@Serg close to being legendary I think :)
hg8
hg8
@MaartenWachters It's your combined reputation
15:18
@cl-netbox oh, no , I am long way to reach @A.B. 's level, he is truly legendary here, even with a badge to prove that
Oh
You're gonna hate me for this but I spend most of my times in the C# and .NET rooms
so
:) Ain't no hatin' breh . . . we're all coders here , just different flavors . . . .
@Serg no no no - your level of knowledge is really great as well my friend. :)
@cl-netbox well thank you for the kind words . . . I try my best and really enjoy every question here on AU
It's too bad that the CLI from network enviroments seems so diffrent, atleast to me,to that of a linux istro
15:21
@Serg part 1 : truly meant - part 2 : same with me :) ah ... not every ... =)
But yeah our teacher unixsystems is fucking useless if I may be so crude. He literally gave us prntscr.com/99vtwi that slide and expects us to write a Bash script
@Serg not me ;p
Well I gotta run to my class now. Thanks for that link to that bash book
I'll defo read it tonight
@MaartenWachters have fun in the class ! And come back soon
I probably will be later
I need to finsih this script before saturday
15:27
Kek , speaking of teachers, I looked at a script that one of CIS professors told the students to use submitting student homeworks on our university's RHEL server . . .
First, the script uses csh
Second, parses ls
I was like, "I expected more from you guys"
@MaartenWachters nah. they are not that different. Some of the commands have different options ok but that is about it
15:43
@MaartenWachters by This i assume you mean the chat, and I also assume you don't know that it's a conglomerate of the reputation across all the SE sites
44 on SO, 28 on Code Review, 1 on Ask Ubuntu = 73 rep here on chat
HA
Found the problem
@A.B. the code snippet you ran didn't work lol
Wrong certificate path in /etc/openldap/ldap.conf
@ThomasW. which snippet
Found the problem =)
all of them >:D

15:46
@A.B. glad it was easy, just the wrong cert path
Now do I install CentOS again. I want to know if I have the error written to the configuration.

@NathanOsman so, as you are our resident Raspberry Pi expert, can you give me a suggestion on which Raspberry to actually get
Or a kit . . . would be even better to know what kind of bundle there is
17:19
@Serg I recommend the Raspberry Pi 2, but for fun, you can try the Raspberry Pi Zero. =)
@Terrance hey my friend. I hate CentOS and the wrong default LDAP-configuration :)
@A.B. Hello buddy!! What happened to CentOS?
The default configuration in /etc/openldap/ldap.confpoints to a nonexisting cert path.
Even in a new installation
I had a funny day >:)
@Terrance It's time to begin my journey into the world of berry computing :3
Speaking of CentOS how close it is to the RHEL ?
99,9%
17:26
@Serg I started with a Raspberry Pi B, and I ran XBMC on it for a long time as a media client. I have it in a box right now, as I have not got a Raspberry Pi 2 yet that can run Windows 10 and other things on it. =)
Hmmm, well . . .maybe I should get a CentOS VM then
@A.B. Looking that up to see what we have done to resolve that. I need to find a CentOS host though. I am thinking that the RHEL systems have the same information, but I want to be on the safe side.
raspberry zero is not on amazon :/
@Serg There is a bundle on Amazon
@Terrance for twice the price.
17:34
Evening lads
\o
@MaartenWachters welcome back
@Seth Yep! That is the only one I see on there. @Serg Buy it from The Pi Hut. Much cheaper! =)
I am considering buying an arduino breadboard kit
@Terrance do they ship to the US ?
17:35
You can run ubuntu on microcomtrollers I am assuming?
Also, it said out of stock
@MaartenWachters microcontrollers run only C or Assembly
No operating systems
because their memory is very tiny, in kb range
@Serg They're all saying out of stock. This one can notify you when they're available. shop.pimoroni.com/products/raspberry-pi-zero
Ehhh we are going to learn assembly next month
But the kit can also be used for my electronics course so its a double win
Anyways I read till Ch 5 of that bash book I was sent here but it seems its not really for scripting
I'm actually electrical engineering guy, and we basically have to know how to program microcontrollers. But I promptly forgot 99% of everything from that class. . . This winter break will be a really really long and tedious review for me
I dont have microcontrollers cause im onlu first yeat
Just want to do it out of interest
17:41
^ That's the guys we've been programming
4kb of RAM , 128 bytes of storage :D such a beast ain't it ?
Godly
Tbf what can you do with them
Lots of things that require a certain form of control system
like a coffee maker . . . .
Currently a lot of my time goes to c# and js
17:45
I wanna make a programmable coffee maker with either arduino or Raspberry
Copy the github coffeemaker.sh

Noooo, no spoilers :p I wanna figure out this project by myself as much as possible . . .becaue I might wanna use it for senior project idea
I need to find something to occupy my brain right now . . .i had no sleep last night, so i am yawning more and moar

And ironically I am alone until the next hour and 10 minutes . . . because my partner didn't show up today - sikc
and i am all out of coffee . . . and i cannot go buy one because partner isn't here
Where are you from if i may ask
17:52
I am Ukrainian by origin, but currently I am residing in the US and I am the US citizen . . . I'd love to travel one day to china though,because i speak mandarin, on aa conversational level
Cool
I live in belgium
user136984
@terdon: I think that would be considered 'cross-posting' which is frowned upon here. Also, I've had questions closed before on other sites and they are simply migrated (if they are good enough) to the appropriate site. I'll ask a mod here though.
Nice , pity I haven't had a chance to visit Belgium yet
Anybody has superglue ? I need to prevent my mouth from yaAAAAAaaawning
@ParanoidPanda you're still obsessing with the Tox IP question ?
user136984

user136984
They still haven't replied on why...

user136984
Is that a type of yodelling?
YOLO = You Only Live Once, a phrase commonly said by teenagers before doing something stupid
user136984
18:21
@Serg: No, I prefer to yodel. :P
@ParanoidPanda It's not cross posting if the original is closed. Only if you post on both sites at the same time. When a question is closed as off topic, posting it again where it is on topic is the right thing to do.
user136984
Or migrating it.
@ParanoidPanda Well yes, but that means bugging a mod. There's no point since it's already closed. Just go and ask it yourself.
user136984
@terdon: I just checked, and it's got 4 reopen votes... :D
@Serg you asked about Raspberry Pis. My recommendation would be the RPi2. You'll need to make sure you have a microSD card, a USB keyboard, a micro USB cable, and a monitor or TV that can be connected via HDMI. If you want to connect it to the network, you'll also need either a USB WLAN adapter or an ethernet cable.

@Serg Its also a county in california
Yolo County, officially the County of Yolo, is a county located in the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 200,849. Its county seat is Woodland, and its largest city is Davis. Yolo County is included in the Sacramento-Roseville-Arden-Arcade, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The county is located in the Sacramento Valley, Much of Yolo County remains a relatively rural agricultural region. This is evidenced by the multibillion-dollar state of California tomato industry that accounts for 90% of the canned and processed tomato production in the...

Also the first moved message is "I can't define a cake by a slice". It highly seems part of the madness to me!
user136984
Ok, what I said was "You can't define a cake by a slice", and what I meant was that I have a belief which is sort of broader than rebirth, though rebirth would fit into it. Rebirth is very specific, and what I believe in could be thought of as that and not at the same time. So my whole belief is the cake, and the rebirth stuff fits into it as a slice, but you can't define the whole as just the slice. The slice is part of the cake, but it is not the cake, and the cake does not fit into the slice.
that makes more sense ;)

user139252
@paranoidPanda Their other TLDs must just redirect to that one, their preferred domain.
user139252
The Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) .io is assigned to the British Indian Ocean Territory. The .io domain is administered by the Internet Computer Bureau, a domain name registry company based in the United Kingdom. Google currently treats .io as a generic top-level domain (gTLD) because "users and webmasters frequently see [the domain] more generic than country-targeted". == History == The .io domain extension has existed since 1997, and has grown steadily in popularity ever since. .io domains now compose 0.1% of all websites. The first IO-related domain to be registered was the...
Exactly. Was just about to copy the same... ^

and yes, it's fine. Why wouldn't it be?
maybe its cheaper
20:04
.io is definitely not cheaper.
it's actually a bit on the expensive side :/
really? :o

user136984

user136984
It really isn't obvious how you get the free download!
user136984
@hbdgaf: Does your username have any meaning by the way? :)
@Serg needs some votes here. Mine was accepted, but was a slapdash answer. His is better.
20:10
WIKI: IO has also been taken as an abbreviation of "Internet organization".[citation needed] In addition, .io domains are often used for open source projects, APIs (such as put.io API and pen.io API) and online services.[20]

user136984

No, but there are commit logs.

user136984

@Seth can't remember if I told you or not - but it works in all rooms on chat.stackexchange.com now. Just need to make some final tweaks before spreading the word.

@GeoMint I had the same on Arch, it's because of the console resolution. I also think the maximum is VGA (1024x768), but I'm not sure about this.

@hbdgaf hehe, thanks for the kind words, I'm still not done yet - gonna add one more option to that answer
God, I feel silly and stupid for asking this question in the first place... 'cause I knew an answer that would work but didn't realize until almost a month later >.<

@ThomasW. Sometimes you just need to write it down. :D good one anyway!
@Seth lol, I've done that in the past though
@kos Indeed! I was like "Wait a freakin second... didn't I do something like this for my external USB Ethernet adapter, and also my on-board ethernet adapter...?" so I took a swing at testing it and I was like "Ho-ly freak-in crap, why did I even ask the questoin..." >.<
feel bad about the bounty, but the answer given about the udev approach is definitely decent
though the simple "Let the kernel manage it directly, 'cause NetworkManager won't manage it then!" approach worked better and was a LOT easier to implement

@GeoMint Then no idea. Why don't you ask a question? It would be nice to make that work.

Q: Login screen on Ubuntu fails to go into full screen or to fill window

GeoMintThe login screen on Ubuntu fails to go into full screen or to fill window. However, when logging-in to user accounts, the screen does go full. I have already installed Guest Additions correctly and i use the Auto-resize Guest Display as shown at the image below. That is maybe happening because...

kos
kos
@GeoMint +1 from me
:D
But i don't want to make it static, but to make it resizable, by adjusting the host's window size.
that could be better as expression
is that ok?
@kos also, do i need to put Vbox version?
kos
kos
Hold on a second though, I just saw you're running on a Windows host. That makes it off-topic, unless you're happy with a fixed resolution.
this is not off-topic
its about the guest. isn't?
kos
kos
I.e. fixed resolution -> set the console resolution on Ubuntu (but then it's a duplicate), adaptive resolution -> do something in Windows (but that's off-topic)
21:52
really?
