@Zacharee1 Try it.
@terdon Not in Ubuntu and no thanks
$ sudo rm -rf /
rm: it is dangerous to operate recursively on ‘/’
rm: use --no-preserve-root to override this failsafe
huh
Then why do so many people have trouble with it?
rm won't remove / unless you use --no-preserve-root. It hasn't for quite a few years now.
@Zacharee1 They don't. They think they would.
Or they did rm -rf ~/ or similar. It will break most things. Including /boot, /etc /usr` and so on. Just not /.
It's in the POSIX specs.
Yeah, but putting the /* is very dangerous
00:03
or rm -rf ~/$STEAMHOME ;)
I just ran it in a VM safely, and bam no more boot in the VM
@Terrance globs are extremely dangerous.
@Seth Indeed they are! =)
Glad I have VMs to play with that can be easily set back up. =)
00:15
Suicide Linux can be quite brutal.
@Terrance Why would someone make that?
@Zacharee1 Don't know. Maybe it should be called "Roulette Linux".
One more dangerous thing I can think of would be running the sudo rm -rf with the /* on a WUBI installation since it has a /host folder that is your hard drive. It would obliterate everything!
00:47
I'll just leave this right here.. github.com/NARKOZ/hacker-scripts
/cc @hbdgaf
That again?
Sorry buddy, what do you mean?
@Seth Oh, that was that mindbogglingly stupid bug where they weren't checking whether the variable was defined and ended up deleting everything in ~/ right? Idiots.
@NathanOsman lol, that was awhile ago
00:59
@Lucio It was brought up about two weeks ago
other news I sent off the email recommending the touchscreen kiosks, and stands, should be a cool project
here is the stand: displays2go.com/P-23320/…
found the source code for the touchscreen, and got it working as well
I should write a post or something if I have time for it, the documentation had a lot of information for old Linux distros was hard to see what needed to be done
including a .exe file that was actually an archive...
@terdon yes on both counts.
xD
That's why you don't get people who put "MS Word" under "Computer skills" in their CV to write your code for you.
01:08
ikr
ō_ô
@NathanOsman That's me :p
tables for steps was intresting, it did make comments for the code kind of nice though I think markdown style might be better google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=http://…
so, I totally should remake a simpler how to for it just targeting Ubuntu
@NathanOsman that is the "in" color right now websafe version ;p
01:24
:P
lol, remember when you had to worry about people that had only 256 colors
01:53
Someone just asked why downgrading iOS wasn't working for them on a thread about the new jailbreak for iOS 9.0
If that isn't thread-jacking, I don't know what is
02:04
Some interesting rounding and math by Gmail
@Zacharee1 lol
downgrading ain't possible xD
not easily
@ThomasW. Unless you're iH8Sn0w, not at all
except for the 4S, which can go to 5.0.1 or 6.1.3
For some reason
02:56
Alpha 19 is out for 0 A.D.!
03:09
@Seth What?
@HeatherBrown I have resurrected my server :p
@Zacharee1 play0ad.com
@Seth a bit late - I think I beat you to the announcement:
Nov 27 at 4:03, by Nathan Osman
@blade19899 http://play0ad.com/new-release-0-a-d-alpha-19-syllepsis/
:P
:P
03:24
@Lucio saw it about a week or two ago. it's pretty hilarious.
think I even dropped it here.
03:48
@NathanOsman I figured it all out...
@NathanOsman not sure what I did, but it works...
04:31
3 messages deleted
whose idea was it to put the delete room button right above the delete messages one? -.-
04:44
lol
Did you nearly accidentally the room?
@JourneymanGeek yeah xD
05:29
This is bizarre.
Suddenly my desktop only does 100 Mbps.
It's only negotiating for 100 Mbps with the router, instead of the full 1 Gbps.
I wonder if this has anything to do with the virtual bridge I set up...
nathan@nathan-desktop:~$ sudo ethtool eth0
Settings for eth0:
	Supported ports: [ TP MII ]
	Supported link modes:   10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
	                        100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
	                        1000baseT/Half 1000baseT/Full
	Supported pause frame use: No
	Supports auto-negotiation: Yes
	Advertised link modes:  10baseT/Half 10baseT/Full
	                        100baseT/Half 100baseT/Full
	Advertised pause frame use: Symmetric Receive-only
	Advertised auto-negotiation: Yes
At least two things there are configured incorrectly.
Wake-on-LAN (WOL) is supposed to be enabled.
And the "Link partner advertised link modes" is incorrect.
Ah, silly me. I used the wrong cable.
I've totally never done that before wink wink
Nooooow we're getting speeds closer to what I expected.
@Seth So apparently CAT5 != CAT6 :P
Now to fix the issue with Wake-on-LAN...
05:44
ANy mod available here?
@Seth ?
@Seth @fossfreedom Its serial voting askubuntu.com/users/439451/ravan?tab=reputation
I just opened AU I got 100 rep, Its very odd
hi @Ravan. Let me take a look.
@Ravan Yes that does look like serial voting. The system should take care of it sometime tomorrow. Don't worry about it :)
@Seth Its really odd
my rep bar looks weird
How to know, who?
There is no way for you to tell who.
Sometimes moderators can tell, but that isn't public information.
If necessary we will contact the offending user and let them know that this isn't ok.
do the last one,
please
thanks @Seth
:)
05:59
@Seth one minute
yes?
Can I post suspect user here?
public?
well.
no. How about you flag one of your posts with that information?
right
I will do now
cool. I'll see to it tomorrow. It's late here :)
06:05
Well
flagged
@Seth see you
good night :)

Morning folks :)
@Fabby & @ParanoidPanda --^
@NathanOsman point four is new for me, great. And I love point five :)
I know it kind of goes without saying but... those aren't really serious tips :P
@NathanOsman do you know a good WordPress LDAP plugin? For WordPress multisite.
Behind LDAP is Kerberos.
I'm afraid I have never used WordPress multisite.
All of the installations I have are single sites.
06:53
@A.B. o/
Hey @Ravan
07:22
Nathan Osman has made a change to the feeds posted into this room
George doesn't post very often (once every month or two), so I don't think adding his feed to this room will disturb too many people.
Er, I didn't realize the articles are posted right away...
Anyway, that's fine now :P
07:51
Hrm... I need a way to get an HTML element to appear immediately after another even when jQuery's .insertAfter() is invoked with another element.
This sounds... difficult.

@cl-netbox yep fine as well.
@Neil nice to hear this ! :)
Hi Everybody, Is anyone able to look more in depth at why I'm getting the following notice "Wait! Some of your past questions have not been well-received, and you're in danger of being blocked from asking any more."
I don't have any negatively scored questions, and I don't think I've ever deleted any.
@hg8 the swastika was adopted by Hitler, but has a much deeper origin and wider usage that just by the Nazis. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika
@ryanjdillon - you dont have a Ask Ubuntu profile - probably should hop into a StackOverflow chat room and ask a mod there to help you - maybe this chat.meta.stackexchange.com/rooms/89/tavern-on-the-meta
@fossfreedom he has a Ask Ubuntu profile
09:58
ahh yes - I was clicking from chat - didnt show up from here for some reason
My score isn't high enough to see downvotes on my questions, so maybe I have more negative points than positive, despite a positive rating?
@ryanjdillon - you've got two autodeleted questions - probably because the system thought you abandoned them.
Hmmm... I haven't heard of this. What's the best course of action to keep myself from getting blocked from asking questions?
when you ask a question - keep revisiting it every couple of months to update it with your investigations.
... additionally if you are not getting any views - pop into here and ask for some help on how to improve the question. Edit the question with any responses
--- consider bounties to get more attention
Great. Thanks!
As an aside, I went to ask a question that I swore I found an answer for before, but no I can't find it, so I'm afraid it will just be marked duplicate if I ask.
my drives in /media/username/ keep getting renamed from /media/username/label to /media/username/label1,2, etc.
10:06
if google doesnt find your question (remember to suffix with " site:askubuntu.com") then pop into here and ask before you post - someone usually here can say "yeah its been asked before"
Ok, thanks @fossfreedom (and @Neil)
i didn't do any thing.
You helped point him/her to my profile

@hg8 Why wouldn't they be?
hg8
hg8
@ParanoidPanda I don't know. That's true, it's not only linked to hitler.
user136984
Hitler used the Buddhist peace symbol because he thought it was powerful, he also flipped it over. And the one which is flipped his way with the dots in it is an Indian peace symbol. And I guess that they just provide them in every flipped round way that they can...
user136984
11:00
Still not too sure where those symbols would come in handy though... :P
user136984
I haven't ever needed to send anybody those before and they are banned in some countries...
hg8
hg8
@ParanoidPanda That's what I was thinking too
@ParanoidPanda Yes it's banned in france
@ParanoidPanda thanks for the clarification
user136984
But these were originally peace symbols, we shouldn't forever associate them with Hitler, we'll just allow him to ruin something else then...
hg8
hg8
Of course.
user136984
There are all sorts of things, such as his name, I don't think that we should reserve that name only for him now, we shouldn't give him special treatment, the name should just be treated as an ordinary one that goes into use one day again. And there are other things like their salute, which originally was a Roman salute. I don't think that all these things should be banned and associated with him and the Nazis for ever.
user136984
11:06
I mean, it all happened rather recently so maybe now is not the time, but we shouldn't keep it this way for ever giving them special treatment. I don't know, you might disagree with me.
user136984
Poor Romans though... Look what happened to their salute and it's banned now!
user136984
And they've even banned the moustache now for god sake!
user136984
Not that I really want the moustache, it's not exactly very nice...

I see what you mean but it's debatable.

I'm just curious about who will upgrade, though I am mostly curious about people who are currently running the latest LTS version.

Q: Why was my question on using Ubuntu to trace IPs closed as off-topic?

Paranoid PandaI recently asked this question How to trace the IP of a Tox user?, and although it received upvotes as and was answered, it was still closed as off-topic. But I don't really see why because although it was asking about third-party software, I thought that was allowed, or if it was because it was ...

11:44
@ParanoidPanda - at a guess probably that question was general networking orientated
user136984
11:56
@fossfreedom: But I was using Ubuntu, plus I have been told in the past that questions about things on Ubuntu that could be asked about the same thing on Windows etc are on-topic here if I ask about them on Ubuntu.
yep - as I said - "I guess" - especially given the answer you accepted was about doing stuff with your router - nothing todo with ubuntu.
personnally I am relaxed with the Q ... 5 others obviously were not.
user136984
Well, that was because I was doing the right thing, but I would need to either do it from my router, or directly connect my machine to the internet because of my router doing the NATing thing.
user136984
@NathanOsman: What was all the trouble about in the Root Access room last night by the way? :)
@ParanoidPanda that kind of question will generally be better received on Super User.
user136984
12:51
@terdon: Then can't you migrate it there? I think that the question is good enough for migration.

@terdon you are appeared with blue color, which site's mod?
@xiaodongjie Unix & Linux
@terdon wow.
@xiaodongjie Nah, that just means I convinced people to vote for me, not that I'm some kind of super UNIX guru.
I'm the least knowledgeable of the high-rep users on U&L.
13:41
@terdon HaHaHa ... how does this work ? Hello my friend :)
@terdon 157K is so high to me!
@terdon believe it or not ... =) are you kiddin' with @xiaodongjie ? :D
@cl-netbox Hi and it's true. The other high rep people are mostly professional *nix programmers and sysadmins. I'm a biologist who likes playing with Linux systems. When it comes to text parsing, I am quite knowledgeable but for the Linux internals, I'm just a competent user.
@cl-netbox i think that terdon is kidding me :D
@terdon But good enough to be moderator xD
@terdon which is really what is important.
13:44
@xiaodongjie Well, that's network-wide. I'm active on quite a few sites and remember that you get a 100rep bonus for each new SE site you join. It adds up quite quickly.
@ThomasW. True, I do understand enough to judge whether something is off topic or not :)
Usually, anyway.
@terdon yes, just 100.
@terdon so all other linux pros should move to biology ! ... to gain the same knowledge you have ! =)
:) I do bioinformatics, that's heavy on the computing aspect.
@terdon then they should move there ! =)
Well, I've also been using Linux for work and play for ~17 years. You pick things up :)
13:48
@xiaodongjie jokes aside ... whenever you are in doubt, @terdon is one of the first addresses you should ask - seriously ! :)
@cl-netbox yes. he's very interesting.

Who knows a working LDAP plugin for WordPress?
终于找到了一个方法, yay
14:01
Hello @A.B. :)
@cl-netbox \o =)
@cl-netbox a working plugin
@A.B. do they not work ?
nothing of them works and I have no idea why. ldapsearch in a terminal works
14:07
@A.B. Probably have to configure it accordingly, I doubt it default knows how to be configured and use correct data
(most LDAP auth systems are like that)
Yes, I have the plugins configured
SSL, anonymous access, Base DN and so on
The interesting thing is, I can use port 636 and SSL in Thunderbird Address Book, but not with ldapsearch in a terminal on the same machine.
is LDAP listening on 0.0.0.0 or is it only listening on the IP address on one of the NICs?
because if it's not listening on 0.0.0.0 and/or 127.0.0.1 it's not listening on localhost, so...
that could be one issue
14:45
@ThomasW. about your bounty question. I doubt it is actually possible to disallow an interface to be used by network manager, because it has to be somehow connected to the router in the first place, to get interwebs access to the VM. . .however, you might want to look into a firewall option; for instance for a moment block your host interface to disallow all traffic on that interface, but allow traffic on your VM adapter . . . .Also,with virtual box in the settings you can specify specifically
which bridged adapter to use
@Serg Except it's not VBox. And the adapter won't work with the Kali VM via "Bridged"
hence why i'm trying to figure out if there's a way to 'enforce' network manager to not try and control it. Theoretically, /etc/network/interfaces entry for the wifi adapter (its name is defined statically in udev rules already) might work, but... not sure
and meh, i have the rep to waste if nobody can provide an answer.
@ThomasW. I was using VBox as a mere example, but you might wanna specify which VM you are using. At least it might give people a hint
As far I was seeing from my googling and stack site hopping, it seems like you cannot whitelist a specific program to be used by interface, but only ports ( iptables hint )
@Serg meh, worst case is just make it 'manually' configured via /etc/network/interfaces... that way NetworkManager won't touch it
everyone can now stop complaining in comments on the Ubuntu phone now ;p uappexplorer.com/app/…
