If you're living right down the street of a hardware shop...
"root filesystem should generally be small".. what do you guys thinks about this statement? I have 25gb root and it still seems not enough
I agree. And my desktop has a 10Gb and never ran into problems with it.
On a server /var/ should be mounted itself.
@reversiblean /dev/sda1 103G 23G 76G 23% /
@reversiblean then again. Having a 1Tb disk makes it meaningless to make partitions if your systems is not going to go over 250Gb
@reversiblean Depends on what you have mounted from external partitions.
@A.B. 103G thats large
cyclist ^ run into competitors racing the other way
@reversiblean It's a SSD
I'd probably consider lvm and seperate var next time I reinstall.
@Rinzwind Ouch. Fails are fun, but wins are better
10:07
@reversiblean if it is a server and you host mysql you can also put the database outside of / That is nowadays more custom.
and very well documented too.
@kos without pipes? askubuntu.com/a/700346/367165 o_O :D
kos
kos
@A.B. Yes. The question can be useful, but that it's an absurd requirement.
I see Oli added a solution without pipes though.
@kos I have quoted you in my answer >:)
@A.B. me likes <3
@Rinzwind Yes, mee too, and as @kos said, it's an absurd requirement
Ok, that says all:
> It is. Its a challenge between me and my co-worker, and this was one of the requirements
10:13
@Rinzwind 10GB root without any issue? you may have a separate /usr as well, I guess. My /usr directory almost takes 7G
is a command throws error like error code = -13 where do I find this error meaning? it is not in man page
@reversiblean nope.
@edwardtorvalds Is that an exit code?
no
it is error on STDOUT
not obtained by echo $?
@reversiblean on a server though I have it a bit higher. Or sometimes we do not even use partition at all and just use a big /
10:15
@edwardtorvalds 13 is the standard error number for EACCES, meaning access to a resource was denied.
It could be that the program just changed the sign of the number.
does this standard is used by all commands?
It's a return value from standard library functions.

@A.B. I'm not sure if voting to close it. Those challenges really should be posted at codegolf.SE, and Jacob Vlijm is basically right here: askubuntu.com/questions/700325/…
10:17
@NathanOsman , another question, I used dd if=/dev/sdb of=chromixium.iso to get iso from a formatted pendrive, but I am not able to boot from that iso in virtualbox
An ISO file is different from a raw disk image.
is there any way to get iso back from usb pendrive
Do you really need an ISO file? You should be able to provide the RAW image directly to VirtualBox.
Penguins are awesome =) askubuntu.com/a/700312/367165
@NathanOsman not really

CentOS DVD ISO 4GB o_O 1 hour download time. I need more bandwith
Meh, the Tox thing =)
@edwardtorvalds you merely need to specify the correct format when choosing the image.
hehe
@NathanOsman I found another simple way of setting up apt cache, by that method all my computers will use same directory, which you can set in /etc/apt/apt.conf
all you have to do is put that dir on any computer on network
Ah, okay.
 cat /etc/apt/apt.conf
 Dir::Cache::archives "/samba/raspberry/archives/";
:D
10:28
bug or feature, I'm not sure askubuntu.com/a/700350/367165
@A.B. if you can use feature, if it gives your problem then bug :D
@edwardtorvalds =)
@edwardtorvalds turns out that isn't the same RAW I was thinking of :P But it's still pretty easy. Open a terminal and run "VBoxManage convertfromraw --format VDI <raw image file> image.vdi"
Then you can add the .vdi file.
This is like my only really 'stable' project:
and this raw comes from dd right?

Note: if the keyboard LEDs are blinking, that likely means the kernel has panicked. (Equivalent to a BSOD on Windows.) — Nathan Osman 1 hour ago
Why that ?
@hg8 to show kernel is panicking? :p
hg8

@edwardtorvalds I meant, is that a feature ? Is that a coded comportment ?
@hg8 feature :=)

@ByteCommander Really ? On external keyboard?
PS2 keyboard, yep.
abhishek:~$ ln -sf /home/abhishek/Matlab/bin/matlab matlab
abhishek:~$ matlab
matlab: command not found
Why?
10:58
@AbhishekBhatia ./matlab
abhishek:~/Matlab/bin$ ln -sf /home/abhishek/Matlab/bin./matlab matlab?
If you want to run an executable in the current directory, you need to explicitly add the relative path (. = current directory).
@AbhishekBhatia No, you run it with "./matlab" if that file exists in the current directory.
yeah that works
I am trying to create a symbolic link.
So what's the problem?
matlab: command not found
11:05
@AbhishekBhatia Yes, because you can only run commands without specifying the absolute or relative path to them if they're located in a directory which is part of the $PATH environment variable. That contains e.g /bin, /usr/bin and /usr/local/bin. Also /home/yourusername/bin, if that exists.
If you want to run matlab as command without a path, you need to create a directory ~/bin and place the link in there. Restart the terminal window after that, then it should work.
abhishek:~/bin$ ln -sf /home/abhishek/Matlab/bin/matlab matlab
abhishek:~/bin$ pwd
/home/abhishek/bin
abhishek:~/bin$ matlab
matlab: command not found
Check above please.
I added this to my ~/.bashrc export PATH="/home/abhishek/Matlab/bin:$PATH"
this shows me command not found
@ByteCommander any pointers/
@AbhishekBhatia Show output of grep PATH ~/.profile and remove that line from .bashrc again, it's the wrong place.
11:22
@Zacharee1 Hello :) Now I am
Alright. I better head for bed.
Night all.
Good night Nathan!
abhishek:~/Downloads/Themes$ grep PATH ~/.profile
# set PATH so it includes user's private bin if it exists
PATH="$HOME/bin:$PATH"
@AbhishekBhatia Okay, then the ~/bin path is already automatically added if it exists.
Restart the terminal window.
or run source ~/.profile
Nothing happens
11:30
After that, it should work. If not, give the output of ls -l ~/bin/matlab
abhishek:~/bin$ ls -l ~/bin/matlab
lrwxrwxrwx 1 abhishek abhsihek 32 Nov 20 16:40 /home/abhishek/bin/matlab -> /home/abhishek/Matlab/bin/matlab
If linking it didn't work, and it's around, just sudo updatedb && locate matlab... then fix the darn link
Sorry, my fault. I misread it...
@hbdgaf how to fix?
@AbhishekBhatia output of which matlab please?
11:33
If it doesn't run, which won't fix it... that's why locate
No, not fix it. but show whether the shell recognized that it should try to execute ~/bin/matlab
I tend to get ugly with problems like this and cd to some wineprefix, export some variables, and then execute relative... but that's simple. Maybe too simple. It works though.
Same thing really. Go somewhere portable and execute locally. Make it a script instead of a link. Either way, I need a nap.
abhishek:~/bin$ ~/bin/matlab
bash: /home/abhishek/bin/matlab: Too many levels of symbolic links
i am confused :P
11:49
@ByteCommander great answer askubuntu.com/a/700384/367165, but ppa-purge is a better way to remove a PPA. :)
12:02
@A.B. More problems with that one... :P
@ByteCommander More problems? What do you mean?
@A.B. OP says same error persists. And he has both precise and trusty repos enabled on 14.04 strangely.
@ByteCommander The repos are not the problem. But without ppa-purge he has to downgrade the packages manually: sudo apt-get install vlc-nox=2.1.2-2build2 vlc-plugin-notify=2.1.2-2build2 vlc-plugin-pulse=2.1.2-2build2
Yes, you're right. And apt-get clean to get rid of the cached ones.
Not necessary but a good idea.
and sudo sed -i '/precise/d' /etc/apt/sources.list to delete the Precise repos
12:21
@A.B Helo :)

@Ravan \o =)
But NOW it's official

@ByteCommander you should also check the output of command -v vlc
Some components of it seem to be 2.1.6, some 2.1.2
You need to downgrade the VLC package as well, it seems: sudo apt-get install vlc=2.1.2-2build2. After that it really should work. — Byte Commander 1 min ago
@ByteCommander dpkg -l 'vlc*'
I watch only. @ByteCommander
@A.B. Sigh... I usually don't like to install extra tools, but next time I will definitely go for ppa-purge. :P
=)
@A.B. LEGEND

Very nice
Only one LEGEND @A.B

Only one Reversal @Fabby ;P

vlc: /usr/share/doc/vlc
vlc: /usr/share/lintian/overrides/vlc
vlc: /usr/share/menu/vlc
vlc-nox: /usr/bin/vlc
reinstall vlc-nox
@ByteCommander to be sure, dpkg -L vlc-nox | grep bin

Q: How to implement progress bar as Application Indicator?

Vsyache Puzdoes unity-panel support panel applets, similar to DBus-based panel applets of gnome and mate? I know about ApplicationIndicators specification, but they are associated with square icons for me. Is it possible to insert long progress bar between main menu and status area?

@A.B. very nice!
@StefanoPalazzo =)
I want this, like right now.

Doing sudo apt-get install unity8-desktop-session-mir on my Virtual 16.04.

Paranoid PandaIn the Hickhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy: Mostly Harmless, on the planet NowWhat there are the Boghogs, and their way of communicating is to bite each other very hard on the thigh, so my question is, if I were to ever encounter one and I wanted to have some sort of friendship with it without either...

@ParanoidPanda yes.
user136984

there is a technical log
for crashes and stuff...
user136984
Do you know where it is?
13:58
@ParanoidPanda yes, off course! I needed that to file a bug!
user136984

user136984

@Ravan current directory.
@ParanoidPanda where have you looked already?
What should I do about a question with a bounty, that I consider to be off topic? (askubuntu.com/questions/699442/…)
14:00
@Fabby Is it ~/.config/tox/qtox.log
@DavidFoerster questions with bounties cannot be closed, so:
Noting, unfortunately...
@ByteCommander I know, but @ParanoidPanda hasn't even looked...
user136984
Oh! I didn't see it there! :D @ByteCommander Thanks! :)

@DavidFoerster Flag it
@ByteCommander That's why I wasn't replying: to force him to look ther ehimself.
@Rinzwind I can't for the same reason.

hmm
we need a mod @DavidFoerster Now where are they :P
Need help?
14:07
see 25563400 @jokerdino :=)
Post it on meta.
@DavidFoerster you should ask about it on meta >:)
I have from a very reliable source :=)
@jokerdino What exactly should be the theme of the question be?
Are we sure its a bug report though?
the 1st one is. it is a program error from what I can see
14:09
Yeah, I am on the question.
@jokerdino It's an issue with the build system of a third-party software. The other is a Wine bug.
Hello everybody ! :)
Hello one ! :)
if another mod agrees with this, the bounty can be refunded and closed after that.
14:11
@jokerdino ahum All bounties are paid for up front and non-refundable under any circumstances. :=) I do not see an exception there
@jokerdino Should I still post on meta? I'm thinking of something like "What should I do, if I believe, that a question with an open bounty is off topic?"
That's possible?
@DavidFoerster Make it specific to this question.
@Rinzwind We can make exceptions.
@Rinzwind Looks like mods are beyond any laws! ;-)
14:12
@ByteCommander I only accept Oli and Fossy on that. The others have less rep than me so why would I trust them >:-D
If you want to be mean, we can wait until the bounty is over and then close it later.
@ByteCommander thanks :D
I forgot the name ;P
jrg

What do we need another mod for?
(@jokerdino?)
14:23

(@jrg^)
jrg
jrg
Confirmation for... what exactly? (Sorry, i'm reading the scrollback and not seeing it)
There is a bountied question that @DavidFoerster says is offtopic. What is the best course of action?
@jrg I believe askubuntu.com/questions/630116/… and askubuntu.com/questions/699442/… are off topic. It's an issue with the build system of a third-party software. The other is a Wine bug.
jrg
jrg
> It worked on 15.04 so I know it is functional I am just not versed enough to deal with different kernels and gcc to fix it myself
I'd say that's a bug.
@jrg BUT we can NOT close or flag it cuz it has a bounty
14:28
@jrg And I agree. Hence my intent to VTC it.
jrg
jrg
I'm affirming the refund and close action.
I see no point in wasting imaginary internet points on a bug report.

@DavidFoerster please have a look at this thing - your comment on the question points to legacy BIOS answers - my answer is here : askubuntu.com/questions/700400/removing-grub2-from-dual-boot/… can you please recheck - thank you :)
@cl-netbox Done and tagged for "uefi".
@DavidFoerster Thank you - so I was right - just asking because it was not meant to be criticism ? :)
14:45
@cl-netbox: It was criticism, but criticism is fine as long as it's substantiated and better yet constructive. I agree with your assessment of the situation.
@DavidFoerster Thank you ! Was it okay to answer the question ?
@cl-netbox Sure. As long as you believe that the question is not a duplicate, you should answer directly to the question.
user136984
Is there a downside when using user agent spoofing in the browser?
@DavidFoerster Yes I was sure - did you like the intro ? :)
@cl-netbox It's fine. I don't see anything in particular about it, that warrants a comment.

@edwardtorvalds me! and I removed it almost immediately and let some software make it :=)
@Rinzwind I am going to install second linux OS, so if installation goes wrong I may need to install uefi again myself (this have happened to me before), did you answer the method to any question?
because if EFI partition is missing or corrupt due to some reason, my current ubuntu will be useless :-/

@edwardtorvalds ehm no it is not :=) My system lets me create those in BIOS. And when I recreate a removed one I still have my OS (?)
