Wait, don't do that yet.

user139252
It isn't exiting you out properly...

user139252
Okay, I want it to log you out of the system when you exit zork, but "exit" in the bashrc isn't working...

user139252
Nope, now it works.

@Fabby Gonna need your expert opinion: my SSD crashed, not even detected in the bios as boot device . . . .How funked am I ? Can anything be done or should I just toss it into junk bin ?
I was creating a youtube channel for my friend in private mode in firefox and . . . .everything stopped responding, so I REISUB-ed, but after that it just stayed on black screen

@Serg back.

12:18 AM
@Serg o/ Hello :)

@Serg Do you have an external drive enclosure?
(ping me as I'm doing a data load)
sound turned on

@Fabby Nope

@Serg OK...
Lemme start the data load and think about your problem at the same time...

@Fabby OK, take your time. Wait, I actually have plastic enclosure where I keep my old HDD, and SATA to USB connector

Erm, ping me only when you need my immediate attention (correction to my prev.statement)

12:20 AM
Understood, sorry

Import running: so what do you have?
a liveCD?
dual hard drives?
Gimme more information! @Serg
;-)

I've a liveUSB with ubuntu and another one with puppy linux, also ubuntu installed on USB ( luckly I brought my stuff with me today ) @Fabby

Bootable USB with a full install?
(SLC or MLC?)

What is SLC ? MLC ?

Erm, do you have an expensive, fast USB (SLC = Single Level Cell) or a cheapo slow one (MLC : Multi-Level Cell)

12:25 AM
I was trying to create an install on usb some time ago, but never errased that usb, so i have it with me right now

yeah that one: SLC or MLC? @Serg

0_0
does anyone use SLC for USB drives?

@JourneymanGeek I do, for my boot Lubuntu 8GB SLC stick

what is SLC ? I don't know what that is

(to disinfect Windows computers)

12:27 AM
@hbdgaf lovely dog. Poor thing is so skinny.
@Fabby 0_0
@Serg single level cell vs multi level cell vs tri level cell.

@Serg SLC = Expensive, fast, MLC = cheapo, slow.

Less the level of cells, the faster and more reliable it is.

see here @Serg

Probably SLC . . . . It's 32 GB drive

USB 3.0?

12:29 AM
2.0 , I believe

and heh, I've been toying with getting a USB 3.0 enclosure for my cheapo chinese SSDs

32G doesn't mean anything: did you pay 20$ (or less) for it or 40$?

Em . . . around 20 I think

OK, MLC... Take the LiveUSB then: different file system, so faster.
boot your computer with that and ping me when done!

OK, plugged in and booting . . . .

12:30 AM
(starting second load)
Second load started: prices, will take a while...

@Fabby booted to options menu , Try ubuntu, install ubuntu, check disc for defects, test memory, or boot from first hard disk options . . . .

try ubuntu

acpi=off , nomodeset

is ACPI=off necessary?

No, but I usually use it . . .

12:33 AM
meh, leave that on.
nomodeset if you like low graphics: I don't have to watch the screen...
:P

Well, i'm already going into try ubuntu mode

OK: twiddling fingers...
lemme know when it's booted.
Do I have enough time to fetch something to drink??? @Serg

@Fabby yes, you have all the time in the world

back in 3 mins

Booted into live mode, 120 GB SSD shows up, mounted without issues, can see files and folders
Wifi connected

12:43 AM
O_o
So the SSD works from a HW and SW perspective?
BTW: I've got an additional 17 minutes as Security is sitting next to me to kick me out of the building by then... @Serg

@FAbby it's not urgent so if you need to leave, feel free
SSD works from both perspectives, i think
I can read my scripts
open images

(sorry it took more then 3 minutes, but I decided to have a last smoke as well)
OK
Good!
now do a:
sudo apt-get install smartmontools
@Serg Security says you're OK, if you confirm your current location without me telling you where you are...

@Fabby Well, everybody knows I'm in Denver , Colorado

Good! He didn't believe me I was giving support to the USA...
:D

-___-

12:47 AM
install finished?

No, live mode lags

OK. Ping me. 3rd load started.

I remembered I can go into TTY
-____- I was waiting for damn unity to start responding

doesn't matter: terminal or TTY.
:D You're an idiot! ;-)

I am using Windows 8 right now

12:49 AM
11 minutes

It makes me dumb

O_o
I thought you were communicating through your phone...

Installation almost done, processing triggers
Nah, I picked up my friends daughter, and now at her in-law's house
About to do her inlaw's HW -____-
@Fabby install's done

@Serg sudo smartctl --scan
Output?
/dev only.

/dev/sda -d scsi # /dev/sda, SCSI device
That's what it spit out

12:53 AM
sudo smartctl --all /dev/sda
(I hope you can copy-paste now)

not in smartctl database
no self-tests have been logged

That's all?
I need everything under:
`SMART Attributes Data Structure revision number: 5 Vendor Specific SMART Attributes with Thresholds:
ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME FLAG VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE UPDATED WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE`
5 minutes...

hold on, I'll log in through live install into chat

4th load started.
I told him you're a big shot in the US that has a major problem with a server

Em . . . Yay
-___-

12:58 AM
I told him it's in a law firm!
:P

paste.ubuntu.com/13380286
what . . .
paste.ubuntu.com/13380386

Minecraft paste???

That was wrong number
O_o

Ah!
reading

What now?

1:00 AM
@Serg SSD looks healthy!
So it's an OS problem you've got.
unmount and run fscheck.
OR: the hard drive became unseated and has re-seated.
check HW connections too!

I've took out ssd and plugged it back in couple of times, not detected in bios
How should I run fscheck

Hold on: it's being detected right now, no???
or is the /dev/sda your USB stick?
I understood you could open images etc...

nope /dev/sda clearly was my SSD, in/media folder

(access data)

yes, I mounted the 120 GB volume, accessed data, all cool

1:03 AM
You've lost me
what is the 120GB volume?

My SSD

your drive or the machine's drive?
so the machine's drive doesn't show up?
Only one drive: yours???
/dev/sda = your drive?

Yeah . . . wait a second

Yeah, just to let you know: when security shows up, he's going to kick my arse out of here! @Serg

paste.ubuntu.com/13380675

1:06 AM
(he went to do his last round)
reading

@Fabby just go, we can figure this out tomorrow

(just telling you)
so the HP is your stick and the radeon is the machine's drive?

Yes

Good: so it's showing up and working: hardware OK, just an OS problem: run fsck

fsck -a ?

1:09 AM
fsck -l /dev/sda
(lock drive: NEEDS to be unmounted!

fsck just outputs it's version, fsck from util-linux 2.20.1

testing
Is it an ntfs drive? (Windows machine?)

i had to run fsck -l /dev/sda

That's what i told you to do!
:P

the superblock could not be read

1:13 AM
I hear someone coming...
Go down that path: HW is working.
Needto split!
Sorry

bye

I got 13 mins extra!
;-)

OK

Tomorrow I'm dealing with a network problem, so might have no Internet access until repairedç!
Ciao!
shutdown -h now

bye ^_^

Q: SSD crashed, now not showing up in BIOS, no boot

SergMy SSD with Ubuntu 14.04 has lagged, so I had to use Alt SYSRQ RESUB (I didn't press I). It didn't reboot, so I powered it off with the power button. Now, the SSD is not being detected in BIOS, when booting from it , the screen reports "Media check failed" In live USB mode, it does show up: I ...

1:59 AM
@Serg uh oh... that doesn’t sound good

@maTEO IKR

2:12 AM
so, snow day tomorrow...
we are getting hit by this:

@Mateo aww
Lucky :p

I guess...

A lot of the world hasn't even seen snow in person

they wouldn't have flinched with a foot back in school - now work is telling people not to come in?

lol
Everyone's driving maybe?

2:19 AM
yeah, I guess some further than others, that is probably why.

¯_(ツ)_/¯

More playing Dropsy ;)
(video game)
fun game ;)

3:10 AM
@Mateo there's snow today in CO as well

nice

jrg
So, if I was putting together a series of videos/articles about DevOps, what are things ya'll would like to see covered?

@jrg what is DevOps ^_^ ?

developer operations?
or something like that ;P

jrg
Well, the entire concept, really. As well as any sorta technology-specific stuff.
docs.google.com/document/d/… - toss ideas in here.

3:14 AM
DevOps (a clipped compound of "development" and "operations") is a culture, movement or practice that emphasizes the collaboration and communication of both software developers and other information-technology (IT) professionals while automating the process of software delivery and infrastructure changes. It aims at establishing a culture and environment where building, testing, and releasing software, can happen rapidly, frequently, and more reliably. == OverviewEdit == In traditional, functionally separated organizations there is rarely cross-departmental integration of these functions with...
our place seems to be doing the "third way"

jrg
Heh.

yay, vagrant is fun ;)

jrg
Yeah, it is.
I was ahead of the curve on that one, but I seem to have fallen behind again with docker.

oh, figured out that there was an older version of vagrant in the repo's when I first tired... all the fun stuff in a newer version

jrg
You can edit btw. ;-)

3:20 AM
Whoever pointed me to the YT channel In a Nutshell, ily

someone else I know was wanting to start a big data sql(database) + frontend page type project
I don't know enough to make it happen, messing with django and vagrant - but waiting on what database they were using oracle, mssql, ect don't rememver I guess there was some reason we weren’t using sqllite?

Most JS/Python/Ruby apps... https://t.co/hkDkjdxpFH

@Serg Have you tried to plug your SSD into another Computer ?

@Neil no, I have not; I will be trying once i get home, I'm not home right now

3:37 AM
@jrg anyway... non-disclosure and all that, If someone really likes sql stuff frontend/backend I could maybe introduce - would be a one developer thing to get it going then show to people that are interested basically you and @NathanOsman come to mind that could possibly set up an entire saas type thing

jrg
@Mateo sounds interesting... I'll have to think about it.
I'm working on Cognito right now, so dunno how much time I'll have.
@Mateo Sent you a hangout note.
@Seth lolyup

re: devops, excellent... more buzzwords to add to the corporate world, as if things weren't difficult enough with "agile" and "continuous integration"

jrg
@Chan-HoSuh lol

I'm joking partially but dead serious too

jrg
3:52 AM
Well, you see it's all about using such things to change the dynamics of the playing field...

I could say a lot (but I won't :P). Let me just give one example re: agile. When I was on a team that did not mandate unit tests, we had awesome unit tests. Now I'm at a place that mandates unit tests with code coverage > 50% to even commit code, and I've seen the most incredibly insipid unit tests. And newcomers use those to learn from (eg they use them as examples to cut and paste), which increases the damage

jrg
there was a good slide about testing, one sec
Basically about how we get paid for code that works, so you setup tests for a given level of confidence.

4:13 AM
well, I've watched almost the whole video. Enjoying it, sure. But even though how he says setup the test for a given level blah blah, he doesn't really explain how that works
Sturgeon's Revelation: 90% of everything is crap
@jrg good video, thanks

@Fabby It's the laptop . . . I swapped my SSD into another laptop, it booted properly. Swapped another HDD into my current laptop - it cannot find it, doesnt show up in bios as an option. I'm probably gonna pop it open tomorrow or on sunday, but seems like I'll be using my backup laptop untill I get myself a new one
Say I said thanks to the security guard, by the way

@JourneymanGeek - Yeah. Probably a rescue from a puppy factory. That rescue is about an hour from a city with a lot of dog fighting, so lots of pit and rottie rescues from puppy factories.

@hbdgaf :(
