Ah, there you go.
Of course, that just moves the question back a step. Why are there 6 default ttys by default? :P
I was waiting for that question :)
No idea, to be honest.
I'm guessing memory limitations and expected expense of each terminal, but I don't know.
Actually, are you sure about that? Is there anything special about tty>6? They don't have a login program running but I don't think there's any reason why they couldn't.
After all, there are quite a few ttys:
$ ls /dev/tty*
/dev/tty    /dev/tty19  /dev/tty3   /dev/tty40  /dev/tty51  /dev/tty62
/dev/tty0   /dev/tty2   /dev/tty30  /dev/tty41  /dev/tty52  /dev/tty63
/dev/tty1   /dev/tty20  /dev/tty31  /dev/tty42  /dev/tty53  /dev/tty7
/dev/tty10  /dev/tty21  /dev/tty32  /dev/tty43  /dev/tty54  /dev/tty8
/dev/tty11  /dev/tty22  /dev/tty33  /dev/tty44  /dev/tty55  /dev/tty9
/dev/tty12  /dev/tty23  /dev/tty34  /dev/tty45  /dev/tty56  /dev/ttyS0
/dev/tty13  /dev/tty24  /dev/tty35  /dev/tty46  /dev/tty57  /dev/ttyS1
Hmm, I might post a question about that but not tonight. Bed time for me. Good night all!
00:04
It was probably a physical limitation at one time.
And now it's just habit/tradition.
@terdon 👋
@Seth that
unity 7 on 7, unity 8 on 8 ;p
00:22
@HeatherBrown I came up with an implementation that is (hold on to your chair) 250x faster.
Runs in under 20ms on my machine.
It may be possible to optimize my formula a bit more but I think I'm done for now :P
As an extra bonus, it will work on any number, no matter how large.
In fact, it almost doesn't matter how large the number is (I tried a 22-digit number), it will still run in about 20ms :)
@Mateo Cool :)
If I'm ever available, I could totally show you some bits in Counter Strike: Global Offensive :)
@NathanOsman wow you really condensed that
skillz
@RPiAwesomeness sure, I'll be sure to get it going a sunday evening or wendsday coming up(those are my days off, have tech team on sunday morning)

2 hours later…
02:22
@Zacharee1 morning
02:56
I'm bored.
which is weird.
Busy day?
kind of.
I spent most of the day helping a friend dig a ditch to re-connect their water line.
Except said ditch was incredibly hard to dig because it was right in between their porch and their asphalt driveway so there was like 2 feet of working room.
Not really what I had planned for today.
03:22
Was it successful in the end?
almost. Still not deep enough.
Luckily they also have a well so they aren't entirely without water.
Ah.
That's good.
yeah. Wells are nice.
I'm in the awkward position of having written some code and not being sure how it works :P
I know I've been there plenty of times :P
03:47
We call that Perl @NathanOsman.
It's too long a comment to repeat here but I was reminded of Perl not long ago and posted on Slashdot about it. It turns out my code's about 25 years old now, still as insecure as the day it was born (flat file text password storage that nobody every moved and set permissions on) and still makes no sense to me as to how I managed to write it.
The scary thing is that it's still out there in the wild. I have no regrets (or shame).
@Terrance morning
thanks for edit =)
04:20
@Ravan Good morning to you!
@Ravan That edit took me a long time, they kept changing their answer every time I started editing.
@Ravan You're very welcome! :)
yeah
Heh... I answered a question a while back, someone downvoted it, and then the asker just approved it. :/
More edits to that one.
It is some what difficult to edit such posts @Terrance
@KGIII hello
@Ravan It sure is
04:22
Hey @Ravan. o/
@Ravan Just performed another edit of that one. =)
=)
I think that is a dup Q
It could be
@KGIII Sometimes that happens. I wish that when you get downvotes that people will tell you why they are downvoting. It would be helpful to know what you're doing wrong so you can improve on it.
Next privilege is Review Queues. I ended up with a bunch of points all at once. Kinda scared me and I thought the site was broken but I figured it out now.
@Terrance Absolutely. I don't mind the downvote. I just want to know why. The points mostly amuse me. It'd be nice so that I could go back and fix it - it was the right answer. I'll link it in a sec and maybe someone can give me insight.
@KGIII congrats 300
@Terrance @KGIII here
04:28
Thanks @Ravan.
Here's the post - not sure what I did wrong. Heck, I spent a while researching it but wasn't able to be 100% certain. askubuntu.com/questions/686969/…
Hmm... Yeah, I leave a comment when I downvoat. It only makes sense. The votes are to improve the site, I thought, not for castigation or ego?
@KGIII I am not sure exactly why, but I know that some people here will downvote a link only answer. It may be correct, but they want to see you spend a little time and add more to your answer explaining.
Hah... Downvoat - yes, yes I do go to voat sometimes. ;-)
Thanks. There wasn't much more to add to it. Ah well, I'll flush 'em out more as I've been doing anyhow. I also have been trying to make them more easily understood for newer users.
yes
@KGIII This one here started as a link only, then grew to show it. =)
@KGIII I wasn't the downvote, but 1.3.x is the npm version not the nodejs version. Also, on stock 14.04 that is exactly the version number installed from repo.
04:34
Nice - thanks @hbdgaf.
@KGIII eventhough there is nothing to add in your post it seems like , you provided only two links
Yeah, maybe I'll flush it out tomorrow when I'm wide awake just for the next person who may come along.
@Terrance - I gotta start taking screenshots but I usually use Lubuntu. I keep Ubuntu in a VM and on a USB stick so that will work too.
@Terrance got gold badge today
@KGIII Screenshots do help in an answer, but also code output of commands. Never leave personal information, but output can really help like this one here
@A.B. o/
04:38
@Ravan Very nice! You have 3, which one did you get today?
steward
@A.B. Good morning friend! =)
@Ravan @Terrance morning guys :)
@Ravan Ah, duh! I see that right below the Badges! =)
@Terrance good night? :)
@Terrance - That makes sense.
@A.B. Yeah, it is good night for me soon. I have another 24 servers to finish in the morning on their LOM configs. =)
@Ravan over 1000! Nice!! I only have 154 so far on my reviews. =( I better get crackin! =)
=)
bye ...
@Ravan You leaving?
yeah , @Terrance
04:43
@Terrance LOM config?
@Ravan Take care! Have a good one! =)
@Ravan cu :)
When does my avatar update? I uploaded my alumni image and it hasn't changed.
@A.B. Lights-Out Management for remote server access
@KGIII It just takes a few minutes.
04:45
Lights-out means power-off? @Terrance
If you make those two edits to the answer, I can toss an upvote on the answer. You'ld be up by 8 rep. One downvote and one upvote nets 8, plus the five from the accept.
Hmm... I changed it hours ago.
@KGIII empty your cache?
Lemme try that too. I tried a private session.
No. I'm still seeing a stock gravatar, so that's not it.
04:48
I'm going to try a different browser. Bugger it.
@A.B. Just a name they give it. The management module is always on so you can remotely power on the host. Access the host through a Virtual Serial Port, like ttyS0. Control BIOS, PXE and other booting functions of the server.
@Terrance ok, now I understand :)
@A.B. I have also heard it as iLOM, iLO, iDRAC, BMC
Well, it is time for this old man to crash out for the night. Have a great time everybody! =)
05:05
G'night. I'm going to poke some buttons and see if I can make the avatar actually work and then sleep.
Welp... I've tried every possible combination of buttons and three browsers - two with zero extensions. It's not like this is complicated looking. It shows up and then disappears. :/ One more try.
heh... Finally the 'save profile' button worked. :/ Maybe it was a site issue? Gravatar issue? It's working now.
05:21
@Terrance sleep well my friend :)

I was reading your profile (secretly) and you mentioned you worked on IBM websphere right?
IBM WebSphere Application Server.
Previously, yes.
just from the top of your head , can you tell how log-friendly this server was? esp from security point of view.
06:42
What do you mean with security?
@A.B. auditing, and stuff like application security
monitoring of critical threads and java beans . Just want to know its usefulness from application security point of view any WAF features it employs
I'm afraid I can not give you good information.
@A.B. that's okay nothing completely required, just wanted to know some feedback

@blade19899 another one : askubuntu.com/questions/688351/…
@hg8 That guy needs to get a spam flag.
08:37
spam flags are quite a serious business ... so don't unless it really is.
@fossfreedom, true, my bad. Review the user in question and make your own decision.
@fossfreedom I spamflag whatever is spammed :=D
@fossfreedom do we still make tags for the name itself ie. Xenial Xerus and if so can I make them? Still need to badge for tagging :X

12.05.1? Typo? :D
where? >:)
08:46
@Rinzwind You editing basterd! :D
You totally made a mistake xD
@Rinzwind yep - still do. Just wondering when the first 16.04 Q will turn-up.
@fossfreedom That's not gonna happen for at least till the first 16.04 image is out.

@Rinzwind Well done =)
why is there an "oneric" tag?!
and how the heck do I make a synonym :X
@blade19899 removed them here askubuntu.com/questions/683329/…
16.04 tag is useless here too askubuntu.com/questions/676048/…
we do not have an "ubuntu-next" tag though :P
08:59
@Rinzwind Was braiam not the one for tag editing? Is he still around?
@blade19899 He is. But not in chat
@Rinzwind ah
Aparently unixmen already made a Wily Werewolf review:
> "The problem we have with reviewing Ubuntu on any occasion, is readers consistently expect to read of a revolutionary new release, every 6 months. If you’re expecting Ubuntu 15.10 to be just that, then you may want to click out of this review right now..." - Unixmen, Ubuntu 15.10, Codenamed Wily Werewolf, Review
09:13
@blade19899 sorry I do not expect that. I expect a working operating system.
"LibreOffice has been upgraded to 5.0.1.2, a major update for LibreOffice users. Firefox on the version that we tested is sitting at 41.0.2. "
So we drop 36 numbers? >:-)
and another thing: topic says UBUNTU so why XUBUNTU images?
09:39
@Rinzwind I stopped liking them after they changed there theme to the abomination they have now.

@Rinzwind What usage are the tty logins for? Always wondered.
10:33
close votes are different from flags ?
close votes are for 3K users and above. Until then flags could be used to bring attention to problem Questions or Answers to moderators/review queue users
thanks =) @fossfreedom
when I am voting to close my own post I saw available votes 50

Love them
@blade19899 lets say we have 3 screens and keyboards attached to 1 computer. You could use tty7 to show Unity, tty8 to show KDE, tty9 to show another KDE. That could be a useful usage of more than 1 tty
10:45
@Rinzwind Ah got it, might play with it latter.
Why was this closed: askubuntu.com/q/633038/36315?
Its on topic IMHO
oli:
> In other words, if I found primed nuclear device and the only interface to diffuse it was a cmd.exe command line, we'd probably all die. I'd take my chances with tar.
I love oli for this:
tar --version
:+D
works for almost all commands so that one would be easy to know
@Rinzwind that was more than 10 seconds - we're all nuclified by now.
@Rinzwind Yeah. --help tells you everything you need to know. If not, then man cli-app
@Takkat nope it was not
At the top of my head:
10:50
for the very plain reason I AINT BOB
> tar xcf *.tar
Right?
@blade19899 nope errors out since you need a valid file when using "f"
@Rinzwind Rob*
@blade19899 potato patoto :=D
Added * ^ right now?
10:52
and if there are not *.tars? Plus you are better of using "t" for viewing instead of "x" for extracting
extracting could be that bomb in the image :DDDD since it can seriously fuck up a system
