Curse Makerbot and its outdated software
yeah, if university wifi could be any slower that'd be great
nice, I like the new system76 wallpaper
That's sort of nice. I wanted a 3d extruded octagon glowing Crysis-esque wallpaper at one point.
00:15
hm, I think I'm going to use more of the icons from this set, It is growing on me
On the plus side, wow - Travis-CI's new container infrastructure is fast. I pushed a commit and within about 5 seconds, all of the tests had run for multiple Python versions and they had emailed me the test results.
Are you using UE4 at all, or you just installed it to test?
just installed it really
either the questions are asking what I cannot solve, or my knowledge base is lacking
not much time lately
00:16
I cannot find a suitable questions to answer right now
@Mateo I'm getting ready to have LOTS of time for a while, so I'm poking around at different things.
making a todo list?
@Mateo what theme is that?
it is a mix
@Mateo Well. First is the budget for the next year. Next is finishing up a couple of lingering projects I used to be able to blame on time. After that is figuring out if I'm going back to retail at all. I had someone offer to make a position for me. After that is deciding what I do to eat, if I don't do that.
00:22
so, you take the ubuntu-mono-dark top bar icons, plust the shine and arrows on the dock, add the flattr icons - then do "Ultra-flat-theme" for the windows which is a spin off of numix - then remove the pixel border on the windows
yikes
@Mateo it is pretty, but not worth the effort for me.
yeah, mostly why I usually stick with plain unity.
which sounds like they are starting to overhaul, starting with the install screens
ooh please
i saw the new pretty install screens. i'm wondering how much is going to change though... and if there will still be the option for non-composited desktop for underpowered hardware. something we used to have that was useful, but that has been going away and coming back recently under unity.
do you think unity is going to go tictac instead of transparent to nick the whole compositing thing in the bud? from the installer, that looks like where they're going.
it will be interesting to see what the windows look like under that theme
They did a good job with the flat look
Ubuntu Mac
The chrome theme masks what it actually looks like.
Interesting
@Mateo Which icon pack is that?
Also, can you give a link for the System76 wallpaper? I really like it
00:44
Whoops
Here
@RPiAwesomeness flattr
@Zacharee1 So, they're going mac theme. That's neat and clean. Not what I would have liked most, but I do like it.
@hbdgaf You're kidding, right?
@Zacharee1 Not kidding. I like it a lot. I just have weird taste. I'm definitely NOT the majority, which is what Ubuntu needs to shoot for. They're hitting the mark.
@hbdgaf That's 15.04 with a Mac theme.
00:55
well how about that, they fixed the launcher icon rendering
yay, no more wavy lines through the firefox icon
I was saying that I have other tastes, so it's probably not as funny as you thought it was.
@hbdgaf "lol" at @Mateo
God, I'm tired
Should I update to 15.10?
I'm holding back for a day or two.
What for?
01:07
Yaaay, i got a downvote on a +8 answer
Where?
If you're downloading via BitTorrent, now's the time, though. Lots of users seeding the download today.

A: Include command in output file?

SergMost minimalistic - approach #4 and #3, both could be converted into function; #2 my favorite - awk. #1 uses script command - very versatile tool, useful for recording command line in general; applicable anywhere, for whatever you want to record. Approach #1: There is a /usr/bin/script command...

@Zacharee1 I'm waiting because I don't want to download a 1 GB ISO file on my 1 Mbps connection.
@NathanOsman ah
@Serg wonder why
01:09
@Serg I also just received a downvote for this.
So don't feel bad :P

@Serg me too on that question, and Byte Commander also

01:14
Huh ? @kos looks like somebody is trolling. By the way is there any consequences for serial downvoting ?
@Zacharee1 - I love a good troll. I admit it. Downvotes aren't good trolls but I figured I'd share this: youtube.com/watch?v=sTSA_sWGM44
kos
kos
I don't know. They're the most "complicated". Maybe the downvoter didn't like them fo that
@Serg there's a -1 rep for many downvotes
for some reason that I have yet to find a pattern on
kos
kos
@Serg I don't know, I don't think it's a troll, they targeted precise questions
Well i know if yoi downvote you also loose point. But there's nothing like serial upvoting, right ?
kos
kos
01:16
@Serg However yes, sure, but the serial downvote must be directed to a single user AFAIK
Alright. Well anyhow, I'm gonna go home cu I'm falling asleep here. See you guys

kos
@Serg Goodnight! o/
Later. o/
Sorry folks, busy. Got a call from the next job.
01:55
Meh... I'll stream Xubuntu too. I'm out for a while folks. I've been asked to go sit and watch something.
02:21
Does anyone know if it is possible to get OpenSSL 1.0.2 on Ubuntu 12.04 (precise?)
GNOME is confusing
And do you know if apache mod_ssl will use that version? Or how I could tell it to?
No idea
I just searched for it
I don't necessarily need to use OpenSSL 1.0.2, because I can just append the diffie-helman params to the end of my SSL certificate, but if it was "simple" to install openssl 1.0.2 and apache mod_ssl would automagically use it, then I would do it the better way with specifying SSLOpenSSLConfCmd DHParameters
@Zacharee1 hello =)
@NathanOsman I don't see Go in the list
does Go is realy useful /important language ?
It's a much newer language so it doesn't have the widespread adoption that other languages do (yet).
but IIRC it came around 2010 , isn't it ?
When it comes to programming languages, that is considered very recent.
And I believe it was more like 2006/2007.

04:17
@NathanOsman I didn't mind him, but are you still working on him at all?
And I suppose it's a bit late to say this, but there is a Linux conference down here today and tomorrow. I dunno how doable that actually is for you period..

@hg8 The SE system detects serial votings.
That means if you up/downvote the same user more than a specific threshold within short time, it will send you a warning and undo all those votes.

@terdon Is it possible to redirect the the last command via !! in a file without executing !!? ls; !! > out
@A.B. What do you mean? !! > out will execute the last command. In order not to execute it, the shell would have to keep the output of the previous command in memory to write it again. That would be a very bad idea since a command could produce terabytes of output.
@A.B. !!:p > out
Or not.
At least that does print the line without executing.
11:10

Bye
@A.B. Found one, is that what you want?
$  uname
Linux
$  echo !!:q > outfile
echo 'uname' > outfile
$  cat outfile
uname
hu?
Redirect last command to file without executing it:
echo !!:q > outfile
ls;echo !!:q > outfile
No.
History works line by line.
ls;echo ... is one command.
11:12
arg yes
But you can use !#
That means the current line.
$  uname; echo !#:q > outfile
uname; echo 'uname; echo ' > outfile
Linux
$  cat outfile
uname; echo
It refers to the current command line until the !# string.
Guys you can't get the output of a previous command without executing the command again. How could you?
You can restrict it using word designators and modifiers described in man history though @A.B.
@A.B. this smells a lot like an XY problem. What are you trying to do?
@terdon Are we talking about the output of the command or the command itself now? @A.B. ?

yes, this thing from yesterday
The output, I think. That's what A.B. asked for.

Yah, but you can't place the !# thing into either an alias or a bash function.
That's why I gave up on that approach.
$  uname -r | xargs -I cmdout printf "[%s] $ %s\n%s\n" "$USER" "$(echo \!#:-1:q)" "cmdout" | tee testfile
[ipc-admin] $ !#:-1:q
3.19.0-31-generic
@A.B. See ^
But note that this only works for commands consisting of exact 2 words (command + 1 argument word.)
-_-
And you have to type it, as it is not aliasable/scriptable/functionable.
Leaving. Seeya.
11:20
my computer! it lives!
cu and thanks
(disk cloning successful, partition resizing comes next-
@A.B. @ByteCommander posted an answer. All you need is a function like this:
function runcom(){
    ## Print the arguments given. The '--' is needed
    ## to protect from arguments starting with `-`
    printf -- '%s\n' "$@"
    ## Run the command
    $@
}
$ cat out
apt-cache
depends
kde-window-manager
<kde-window-manager>
@A.B. True. That was silly. I had originally used echo and switched to printf without testing. It works as expected with echo.
11:32
=)
@terdon 15.10 install sucks!
it demands efi :X and my system was still using grub-pc,,, so it crashed after install
@Rinzwind Seriously? It demands it?
I'm currently making a new partition to switch to arch again. I've been meaning to for a while.
@terdon looks like it. install ended up with grub minimal bash and it did not want to (re/)install grub with any of the methods I know (grub kept on insisting GPT+EFI)
@Rinzwind That's ridiculous.
hey might be be being a n00b :=D
I have 15.10 now working using uefi boot from bios though :)
OH what is really funky: I upgraded 15.04 to 15.10 and the installer I used just now said there was an EFI partition of 49Mb. I -never- created that partition. So weird this
Basically all I had to do was mount the partitions and let the installer go :X
12:01
oooooooooooooooooooooooooh crap
@Rinzwind total nukage, huh?
colleague of mine installed Ubuntu in VMware and was looking at a reply -I- made on AU

13:17
He @Ravan =)
Hi
@A.B o/
@Rinzwind so, an installer disk installed EFI when your system wasn't set to EFI?
Did you boot the USB in EFI or Legacy mode?
(some computers permit you to boot in either mode from USB)
hg8
hg8
Hello @Ravan =)
@hg8 hello
got a doubt regarding grub
wrt this grub won't show menu if only single OS present by default
We can customize settings ,
my question: Does GRUB show menu (without customizing ) after any kernel updates
@Ravan What do you mean by this question? If Ubuntu is configured on the system as the default, I think the 'wait timer' is so short that it'll default-boot into the latest kernel
@Ravan if you've diverged within the grub-defaults and overrode the timer, then it operates as you configured the grub defaults
(the 'menu' appearing is dependent on it being configured as such in the grub defaults you configure, which are referenced when grub is updated)
13:32
I think I am not clearly presented my question
no you haven't
Does kernel updates trigger the grub to show menu at start up ?
with out adjusting settings
Is it possible ?
@ThomasW. I had everything set to not use efi.
@Rinzwind I didn't ask what you set
i asked you whether you made sure your installer disk was loaded in Legacy Mode
and not EFI mode
because I know there's a bug that i had seen where if you boot in EFI mode it can break things
rather, if you boot to the USB in EFI mode
jrg
jrg
14:00
@Fabby You're welcome!
@ThomasW. sorry did not know it was optional ;-)
14:48
'tis ok, @Rinzwind
15:31
@A.B for you here
also: yay 15.10 out, new wallpapers
Guys, I hae a hypothetical question: If some company (for whatever reason) wanted to make an OS that was based on the Linux Kernel, and make that OS proprietary, would that violate the terms of the Linux Kernel?
GPL... so maybe
unless its an unaltered linux kernel
oh, the Linux Kernel is copylefted?
...
GPL , and always has been
makes more sense to use a BSD varient ala apple
15:43
ok.. so it means whoever builds an OS based on LK have to also has to license that whole os under GPL, which is copyleft?
ok I read about GPL on Simple English wiki... I see, whatever is based on the LK has to be released under GPL too.. that's nice.
yup
and its enforced to an extent. That's why we have nice things like third party router firmware
because the router firmware based on linux kernel is forced to also be open source, and therefore its easy for third parties to modify and improve it?

just like its easier to make custom firmware mods for android devices I guess
But can they say like "OK, the kernel is GPL," but other parts of the OS is proprietary"? I mean, that's what a lot of Android releases are like, right?
The problem with router firmware now is the FCC is trying to say "You have to make your device not flashable" here in the US. It would apply to anything with a wireless card too - so Android also.
how could FCC possibly justify that rule?
This is why we cannae have nice things
@Fiksdal sort of correct.
15:56
oh ok, so they can have a separate license for the kernel and other parts of the OS?
lol I didn't see any justification in that article.
"Prevent wireless devices from operating in unlawfully powerful debug modes by locking down firmware"
lol why would a powerful debug mode me unlawful?
be
Think about ath9k letting you adjust transmit and receive power and filter levels. Or setting your regulatory domain to some other country to use bands you're not allowed to use domestically. That's not the moral thing, but it's what they're trying to legislate.
I know neither one of those things is flashing firmware, but it's where it's going.
16:03
oh ok.
I see.
about the kernel thing, I'm still not sure. Aren't Android releases somewhat proprietary? I mean, parts of them are proprietary, right? How is that possible when they are based on the Linux Kernel which is GPL?
so, basically...
if you ask they need to give it to you
eventually
they need to give you full GPL right for every component in the release?
*rights
GPL doesn't protect from you extending it. It protects from you from copying it and not making the source available. So, if you extend it, and still distribute the parts you borrowed - you're safe.
so all they have to do is (if asked) provide the source code for everything in the Android release?
Yep. Here's the android tree. Our wobbly bits are separate on purpose. Have a nice day.
16:11
does that also give anyone the right to modify and redistribute everything in that Android release?
Yes. But, if you don't separate your changes, then you have to give them back. It's a little complicated.
for example, if Chrome is included in the release, doesn't Chrome come with proprietary components? Do they have to release the source for those components and give people the right to change and redistribute them? What about Kindle Fire? Surely it comes with proprietary components? Do they have to make all that free and open?
@Rinzwind can you give me reproduction steps please for reproducing the issue you said you have where it put EFI on even thoug you didn't have it configged?
and a base for the steps to reproduce
because then I can poke it in a VM (VMware Workstation 12 gives me EFI and non-EFI modes xD)
oh ok, they seperate the relase into seperate parts, making some of the parts proprietary? And the GPL allows for that?
@Fiksdal No. Think about it this way. FFMPEG is bundled in Chrome. Chrome can USE FFMPEG, but if they modify it without separating it - they have to share that back.
@Fiksdal And yes, it does.
16:17
so Chrome has to keep FFMPEG seperate from the release? Which means that the release has a GPL part and a proprietarry part. Which GPL allows. OK, I think I understand it then.
i'm totally not a lawyer though, but i did stay at a holiday inn express last night.
lol dude, how is that even vaguely related to being a lawyer or not?
also I'm still 30% confused about semi proprietary software based on the LK.
It's a theme for commercials. The point is it's not related at all. It's sort of sarcasm I think.
haha ok.. yeah he pwned that guy.
16:48

Q: How can semi-proprietary software be based on the Linux Kernel?

FiksdalI hope this isn't OT, sorry if it is. If I understand correctly, the Linux Kernel is GPL, which means that if anyone bases anything on it, they have to also license the entire derivative work under the GPL, making anyone free to modify and/or redistribute their derivative work. For example, all...

17:08
@ThomasW. I had 15.04 installed non-efi, Used -upgrade to 15.10-. After install and the reboot it gave me grub minimal bash. That basically is it.
@Fiksdal chrome wll never get included into base Linux. It will be chromium = chrome with all the prop. stuff removed
No, but it is still included into the same release, as it is in Android releases. I guess they keep the kernel seperate license-wise from packaged software.
17:25
@Rinzwind and do we know why we got the minimal BASH screen? Was it because it EFI installed even thoug hyou were in legacy mode?
17:36
i assumed so. cant get my head around it. i was in legacy mode and the installer decidedto upgrade to efi.
