@OctavianDamiean are you mainerror on freenode?
Yes, and I need some glasses and the colored names user script for IRC Cloud ...
hey guys it must have been asked many times still I want ur opinions -- which tool is best to make exact image of HDD and put it on other computer?
jrg
jrg
ok, imma gonna haf to downvote you for that snarky comment in #juju. :P
@OctavianDamiean agreed, IRC cloud is... ugly. :P
@wisemonkey "which tool is best" - asking for trouble
dd works.
I was trying to be a smart ass and horribly failed because I didn't see that m_3 answered the ordinary user thingy and not Marco.
jrg
jrg
22:09
lol
Lesson learned. I fail at life.
hmm I understand dd would work to make image of HDD how to put it on other computer though? so assume one scenario I want to clone my HDD (250 GB) on USB (1TB) transfer exact same image to other laptop HDD (500GB)
lol e1 fails at life
goes back to the Ubuntu packaging guide

@ThomasWard I should be able to be there. Depends on the mood of the better half when she finally gets back from work.
And it also Depends on SpaceChem. Good God that's a superbly addictive game.
22:14
lol
@Oli tell me about addictive games...
the only reason i'm not playing COD:MW3 righit now is because this system's keyboard is fubarish
missing keys, parts inoperable due to someone spilling coffee over it
@jrg I planned to make an Ubuntu theme for IRC Cloud.
One day I'll have the time to make it happen.
jrg
jrg
heh, my "get done eventually" list is about 100 items long. :P
and the list of Ubuntu themes is fairly long as well. :P
holy god i found the most awful thing on youtube that is also simultaneously the most epic thing based off a meme
have any of you heard about nyancat?
heard?
jrg
jrg
UGH NO NYANCAT IN THIS ROOM EVER AGAIN!!!! kicks you to death
22:25
:p
someone put it into guitar hero
I had it as my ringtone just so my roommate can get annoyed
and set the computer to play it
jrg
jrg
ok, this could be funny
22:26
lol
You know whats funny?
@jrg trust me, its not like i like nyancat
i despise it
however that video is both horrible and epic at the same time
jrg
jrg
what is this i don't even...
@wisemonkey i once programmed my sister's Mac to play nyancat on boot and to not stop
@wisemonkey i almost got killed xD
/me was drunk the night before thoguh
jrg
jrg
@ThomasWard that is cruel.
22:28
I can imagine
:P
@ThomasWard that is mean
@jrg aye, but i was drunk
@TheX ^
jrg
jrg
nobody, no, not even Mac using sisters are deserving of that fate.
that is no excuse. :P
hahahaha
Sisters don't deserve to use macs...
4
or macs don't deserve deserve sisters??
or something...
22:29
that reminds me I should probably set it as my ringtone again and keep my phone at home
man....
I mean....
I need some water...
/me installs the nyancat boot virus onto @TheX's machine
2
@ThomasWard I run Linux, I can't get a virus...
</ultimately evil and cruel>
@TheX its basically a C++ script and a line of code thrown into the boot scripts :P
@TheX its cross platform, but i am not evil enough to publicly release it :P
/me WAS drunk when he wrote it
:P
jrg
jrg
it almost sounds good now...
22:32
C++ is slow and confuted...
confuted ===== ?????
lolwut?

it basically is like imploding your brain

jrg
lolwhut?!
brb, rebooting, need to get real work done. :P
@ThomasWard aww man not again... my brain can only handle so many implosions...
@TheX mine is just a massive black hole :P
due to nyancat spammers
my network clearly doesn't like nyancat I was disconnected immediately
22:45
someone made a 100 hour long youtube video of just NYAN CAT
WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THE WORLD?!?!? calls an air strike on his computer
THANK GOD, THE EVIL IS GONE! o.o
Hey all, can I get some help with this? I've been prompted during an application installation: "What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]"
When I press enter I get an error stating: "The path "/usr/src/linux/include" is not an existing directory." Where is this location in 11.10?
one hour, 10 minutes, until the meeting that decides my fate. @Marco @jrg @Oli
yes i'm doing a damned countdown
Countdown for what?
Lolz
If you remove everything in your address bar in Chromium, and press backspace, it makes a sweet drum sound.
Came up with a beat for myself lol, now if only I could record it.

@MarcoCeppi @Oli hey, @ThomasWard just got banned for some reason here in chat...

Q: AutoSuspension from Chat for "Inappropriate Content"

Thomas WardSOmeone mind explaining what content was inappropriate, and why the system is automatically banning users now, and can perhaps undo the suspension?

can undo?
22:54
Amusing, probably some filter for bad language
jrg
jrg
lets uh, test it then. :P
I can only guess that it was the last line he typed here, so the filter would be pretty strict if that's the case
@sadmicrowave: do u have headers installed?
@wisemonkey, I guess not, although I thought linux would have come with them...
thats obviously not true
@wisemonkey where can I get headers?
lol
What a loser
jrg
jrg
22:56
A wise man once told me, "He (that is, my father) feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on some damn fool idealistic crusade like your father did."
waits for suspension
(that was a test)
I got suspended for talking about Hitler once...
jrg
jrg
move along
I didn't...
@sadmicrowave: I don't know exact package but search for linux-header in software center
I'll look as well
I don't even remember what the conversation was about now...
it wasn't even bad...
22:58
@wisemonkey I"m looking for the 3.0.0-13-generic package
I see I've 3.0.0-12 in software center
is it necessary to have -13 in your case?
@wisemonkey not a clue :/
I don't even see 3.0.0-12 in the software center
assuming u have 11.10 and using proper repositories
u should see kernel packages
r u using wubi?
What do you see at the time of boot? I mean there is always kernel number specified in front of boot names
23:03
same thing I see when I type uname -r in a console
which is 3.0.0-13-generic
lol completely forgot about uname and I thought I'm updated and I see 3.0.0-12 :-/
:p
I'm doing some google searches now for 3.0.0-13-generic header 64bit
I guess I won't be able to help u in that case :( last thing -- just try checking all sources in software sources and search for linux-header
awesome :)
@jrg you have any experience with cron?
23:06
wow...
I CAN TALK AGAIN! :P
@wisemonkey ^
@ThomasWard learn your lesson?

A: AutoSuspension from Chat for "Inappropriate Content"

FabianThere is no completely automatic ban on chat, a 30 minute suspension is triggered by a successful spam or offensive flag. So you need either multiple 10k+ chat users or one chat moderator to declare the flag valid for the suspension to trigger. I've checked the post you were suspended for and it...

@TheX read that
23:08
lol congratulations on the overturn.
@wisemonkey although I see linux-headers-3.0.0-13 is already installed
Me flag you?
@sadmicrowave: good u found it or specifically looking for 3.0.0-13 ? cause I see same list but yea 3.0.0-12
in any case
/me goes back to scanning youtube
I don't have any problem with you.... yet...
23:09
whilst i wait for the meeting
what meeting are you waiting for?
@wisemonkey you see in my image where the linux-headers-3.0.0-13 is already installed?
the meeting regarding my membership application
What is it that I'm supposed to be trying to install then?
@TheX i applied for ubuntu membership
the meeting is tonighit
23:09
Oh cool.
Good luck :-D
thanks
i've got people here backing me up :)
ohey Fabian. You didnt show up as a mod when i looked at your StackExchange account.
I am sure you do. People are pretty nice like that here.
@ThomasWard I'm a mod on Skeptics, not on AskUbuntu
23:10
@sadmicrowave: tried apt-file search linux-header?
@wisemonkey what am I supposed to be installing then? if it is already installe?
@Fabian i look at StackExchange accounts... not just <site>.se accounts
just search ;)
/me kicks his browser for not bluify-ing your name
@wisemonkey apt-get* ?
o.O apt-cache
23:12
@sadmicrowave: no no 'apt-file search linux-header'
if u don't have it install apt-file
should give u output something like:
@Fabian thanks though for acting quickly on that :)
hehe just tried uploading text file and was wondering wat went wrong :P
I just saw the meta post by chance
heh
there should be a global tag for "chat-moderation" that pings every chat moderator on SE
@wisemonkey ok, that still doesn't tell me which header file I need to install to satisfy the requirement of the application I'm installing
23:15
:P
@ThomasWard The chat flags actually do that, they're visible to every mod in chat, the spam/offensive flags also to 10k users
oic
so theoretically
someone on some other se site
could have approved the flag
without context?
yes
@sadmicrowave: I thought if u have already installed it, u only need to find where it is and sorry I guess that was all I had up my sleeves :P
@Fabian /me states that as unfair and prone to injustice being done, therefore the chat moderation system should be revisited
23:17
what is an application? if anyone else have installed it then they must have workaround
@wisemonkey oh thats true, can't I just use locate linux-header also?
@wisemonkey vmware-server
There are a few meta posts about it I think, though you can get to the transcript from the flag. So anyone looking for the context of the flag can easily do that.
but moderators who dont bother to see the context shouldnt be moderators in the first place
@sadmicrowave yup find/locate also works, but if u do apt-file search on any package it suppose to tell u missing dependencies as well
iirc, the Ubuntu IRC team has IRC chat moderator regulations specifying mods should be identifying the context of what is reported
granted that's for IRC
but similar policies should be put in place SE wide saying "Determine the context first before acting"
/me might propose that on SO meta :/
23:20
I assume most mods do that already, the problem on chat is just that flags are shown to a lot of different people, you get very variable results out of that
i see. i'm tempted to post on SO meta anyways
at least requesting what standard moderation policies are
and in response potentially stating that a moderator should research the context of a situation prior to responding.
thereby eliminating the false-positive suspensions
at least in a majority of the situations

A: Gaming chat guidelines

FabianThe 30 minute suspension is an automatic consequence of a spam/offensive flag in chat being declared valid. Those flags are shown to 10k users (cumulative reputation on all SE sites) and moderators on the whole chat.stackexchange.com. The flag is shown without further context, though you can acce...

That's one discussion of that on gaming
do you mind if i link that in on the SO meta?
@wisemonkey I did a locate for linux-header and came back with a large list. All files started in /usr/src/ but in my installation when I enter /usr/src/ for the directory of C header files it says The path "/usr/src" is an existing directory, but it does not contain a "linux" subdirectory as expected.
i'm still posting regarding this
/me tends to hold grudges and rages as active until the cause is dealt with
23:25
wisemonkey@devMachine:/usr/src$ ls
linux-headers-2.6.38-11 linux-headers-2.6.38-11-generic linux-headers-3.0.0-12 linux-headers-3.0.0-12-generic virtualbox-4.1.2
@ThomasWard of course you can link to it (the gaming post also links to another one on meta from me)
on my computer /usr/src contents look like those
so if u r expecting '/usr/src/linux' its not there
but /usr/src/linux-headers.xxxxx is
if the package is free I'll try to install it let me check if vmware-server is available
@wisemonkey you will probably have to go to vmware's site and get it: downloads.vmware.com/d/info/datacenter_downloads/vmware_server/…
@Fabian meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/112691/… <-- if you want to comment / track
only 27 minutes until my membership consideration meeting begins o.o
its 450MB so gonna take a while to download
I'll let u know once I'm ready to install it
23:32
@wisemonkey thanks, I have to go :/, can you just ping me when you try it out
sure if I know how to handle users in here let me see if I can add u somewhere
ohh well I'll just keep ur account open in one tab :P
@wisemonkey I'll just stay signed in
ohh ok then
:p thanks a lot!
for what its worth I also found this: communities.vmware.com/thread/91143
