@Ravan The answer that Rinzwind wrote on your question is correct, but I would also look here for the common lockout.

@Terrance Is there any differenc between local and remote
method is different?

@Ravan fail2ban only does SSH (remote), and as far as the local log in, the PAM system takes care of that. I think the PAM could actually take care of both, but hope that someone doesn't use the root user, or that would be locked out.

@Terrance so in that answer both covered?
@NathanOsman o/

@Ravan He did put both there. I personally only use fail2ban for my home system.

4:24 PM
@NathanOsman have a look here askubuntu.com/questions/678331/…
@Terrance see above and below messages

@Ravan Yes, he did put them both there. The PAM tally command would reset the lock on the user account before the time expired on it. The PAM security does the local user itself, where fail2ban locks out the IP address of the remote system.
After a certain number of attempts.

@Terrance @NathanOsman my question is here chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/24329255#24329255
any one can use that command?
does it ask for authentication?

@Ravan anyone with sudo access could use that command that was logged into the host.

ok I will try first!...

4:48 PM
@Terrance nice one

@Rinzwind =)

@Terrance \o =)

@A.B. Hi my friend! =)

This could have gone SERIOUSLY wrong askubuntu.com/questions/678366/…

@Rinzwind =) indeed

4:56 PM
and @A.B. why is there a name aboettger in the part starting with /home here askubuntu.com/a/678369/15811
and what is with the html in there >:-D

@Rinzwind ... maybe because it is his user name ? =)

@cl-netbox always remove personal data ;=) and we all know his name is A.B.

@A.B help
just installed gnome3.16....system running in low graphics mode error @A.B

Press F1 for help
:=)

@Rinzwind thanks for your hint - maybe he simply forgot to remove it because he was busy in answering 1000+ questions >:)

5:06 PM
@Ravan quick answer: drop to command line, install graph driver and run "reconfigure"
detailed one is gonna take some time :X
lol

@Rinzwind =)

@Ravan Hello - I'm back - just booted from wily-beta-iso for testing purposes - running great that beast ! =)

any link @Rinzwind
@cl-netbox hello

I should have a link yes :X was looking through my archive
I had the same problem on a very new notebook ... took me ages to fix :P

@Rinzwind I found this

5:09 PM
@Ravan wow and I though I saw all the great topics on AU :P
ah lol. I upvoted 2 answers in there at some point.

but which answer!....
has to select

do not use this one askubuntu.com/a/125516/15811

yes

use this for ATI cards askubuntu.com/a/126035/15811
this one might be the real problem: askubuntu.com/a/138729/15811 full partition so it can not create the file for the videocard driver
Hmm no answer to re-install nvidia :D

5:41 PM
@Rinzwind html for font weight bold, and grep gives the full path

Oops.

@Ravan Nvidia?

I just killed my website.

@NathanOsman ^.^
why?

It's back now.

5:43 PM
@muru oh yes, you're right, that's sneaky o_O

I had an Nginx configuration error that brought down every site on the server.
Usually Nginx checks the configuration before reloading the server but this time it didn't.

@muru OP likes your answer askubuntu.com/q/678400/367165

I will leave now - a good time for all of you around - see you - goodbye ... :)

@cl-netbox cu =)

@NathanOsman Always run sudo nginx -t first

5:59 PM
I thought the Debian packaging did that when I do service nginx restart...

@NathanOsman it will also torpedo workers, yes, if it's bad. (it will not if the config is valid, and for current connections)
@NathanOsman It's supposed to. But there are cases where that's not enough. (Be thorough lol!)

Okay.

@NathanOsman it's odd, but the 'service' system isn't enough to make sure it works 100%
sudo nginx -t <- actually runs a test
outputs all errors
(unlike the service system/scripts)

nginx: [emerg] host not found in upstream "fpm" in `/...`
^--- here's what isn't working
:(

configs.
or make a private chan with me and provide em
or similar
@NathanOsman good thing i showed up :)

6:07 PM
Yeah :)
Now all I have to do is figure out why it's still serving the default Nginx page and I'm all set :P

@NathanOsman is it the standard Debian package?
or from Upstream's repo?
or mine

Nope - straight from Debian.

ln -s /path/to/newsite/configfile /etc/nginx/sites-enabled
sudo service nginx reload

I did that.

oh
see the other chan

6:24 PM
Is it possible to dual boot Windows and Ubuntu whilst having a single boot partition?
I've got: /, /boot, /home, and BIOS-boot partitions for Ubuntu
and Windows also creates two smaller partitions
but I don't want those smaller ones. I just want Windows in a single partition, but can't figure out how to get Grub to see Windows w/o that tiny boot partition there

@AmagicalFishy Well, that's a Windows question then, isn't it?

Windows needs the "System Reserved Partition" for booting. It is possible to install Windows without it but I'm not sure it's possible to remove after the fact.

Anyway, I have to run... See you guys tomorrow.

@ByteCommander No. :p
@NathanOsman Huh. I've done that, but, for some reason, Windows ends up creating 2 other partitions anyway

Well, I'm out of ideas then.

6:30 PM
There's a Windows/Boot folder, which I assume holds the bootloader and stuff
but when I point Grub2 to it, or do os-prober
it doesn't see Windows as an OS

Do you use BitLocker at all on Windows?

I don't
I only use Windows for games

Hmm... I have no idea then.

Hrm
I think I have a messy idea (thanks to your link)

user139252
What's going on in here?

6:34 PM
@SmokeDetector Spam... at 11:34am in the morning??? What is this?!?

user139252
A bad lunch idea?

user139252
Apparently my students can't be trusted to remember their passwords, so I had to spend all morning making SSH2-RSA keys....

Having been responsible for managing accounts on the family computers, I've come to the bitter conclusion that writing down your password and sticking it to the monitor isn't a bad thing. Anyone with physical access to a machine already has the ability to do anything with it.

@NathanOsman Never show stick the admin password to the monitor if you have little kids that don't know Ubuntu recovery mode yet! ;)
Good night.

Well, of course, I remember my passwords.
It's just the other users who sometimes have trouble.
And I usually prefer to use keys to login anyway.

user139252
6:41 PM
Keys make it easier to log in

user139252
But making flashdrives with keys for 15 students, each with a different key, takes too long D=

user139252
Oh well. It's done now. What was happening with @AmagicalFishy

Oh he was just wondering about extra system/boot partitions.

user139252

The wood pieces and Happ buttons came in for our arcade cabinets today, they finally get to build their own machines!

Got a new server by digital ocean people! SSD Servers! EuroBytes! Awh Yeah!

user139252
SSD SERVERS! YAY!

user139252
I want SSD to get more affordable...

user139252
No way would I pay $1K USD for a drive...

@HeatherBrown, Same here. Really need to get a more powerful Computer

7:05 PM
You can get a decent Samsung SSD for $200 these days.

user139252
How big, though?

user139252
I sometimes do photography and video editing.... I like my 2TB drive. Last I checked, 1.2 terabyte was almost $1000

@ParanoidPanda First try sudo apt-get install -f

got two small systems now lol
they're smalllll form factors

@HeatherBrown 250 GB. What I do is use the SSD for the OS, applications, and my home directory. Then I create mountpoints for Pictures, Videos, etc. inside the home directory to a regular 2 TB mechanical disk. Then all of that gets backed up over the network to a 2 TB NAS.
Hybrid solution FTW.

user139252
7:13 PM
That could work... Done!

how goes it everyone

It goes.
I've got the blog up but WordPress organizes things in such a way that makes it difficult to manage uploaded content...

yes that's because Wordpress
is wordpress

I know :P
I hate PHP and I hate WordPress.
This is one of those "necessary evils".

Guys, I can't .htaccess to work on my server, which is Ubuntu 14.04. I am removing the php extension from my links. It worked on my other server(debian)

user136984
@Terrance: So as it doesn't work for you either and you have Chrome, what do you think that we could all have in common and not with those who are not experiencing this issue?

I can't figure this shit out
Damn you, Windows!!!
It creates a small system partition regardless of what I do. :l

7:56 PM
@ParanoidPanda have you removed the packages?

Q: After ubuntu crash - whole filesystem read-only

user2365568I just had a crash on my Ubuntu system - It happends now and then when the system goes into a sleep mode - I cannot wake it up again - I will sort this problem out in due course of time. But I have another issue - THIS time, when it happened and after restarting the computer - when Ubuntu is boot...

@ParanoidPanda give me an answer or I have to sleep ;)

@ParanoidPanda Mine actually started working, but it only notifies me right after the message happened, but there is no indicator that remains on my screen letting me know.

user136984
@A.B.: Not the packages that it told me had been removed during that installation.

@ParanoidPanda Than remove the packages as commented.

user136984
8:08 PM
@A.B.: Why would I remove the packages? It seems to think that I need them... The problem was that it seemed to suggest that it had removed them even though they were necessary dependencies for other programs.

user136984
Unless I am misunderstanding you?

@ParanoidPanda remove the packages and I will repair your system. Packages can be reinstalled.

user136984
Ah, so there is some sort of problem in my system associated with those packages?

It makes no sense to have a corrupted package management.

user136984
Oh, so you think that the packages are corrupted then or my package manager?

8:12 PM
o/

@ParanoidPanda any dependency has a problem and we will solve now.
@RPiAwesomeness o/
@ParanoidPanda and if not today, then tomorrow

user136984
@A.B.: Why in one case I am reinstalling the program affected, and in the other the dependency?

user136984
And I am not reinstalling all of the programs affected nor all of the dependencies.

user136984
Or should I do this with all of them? Perhaps with the --reinstall flag?

No, simply remove vlc and libavcodec56

user136984
8:18 PM
Oh wait, I tried to do it with the second you mention and now it is saying that it is not installed any more...

user136984
But I am now able to install it, should I do so?

apt-cache policy vlc

user136984
@A.B.: The output of reinstalling the second was:

Am I the only one who finds Banshee's shuffle feature confusing as all heck and basically useless?

I'm trying to get used to amarok, since I'm planning on full Qt only stuff when LXDE hits stable.
A more direct answer is, I don't particularly care for some of the lack of usable features in banshee either, but I don't expect basic utilities to imitate a media-center either.

I just wish the stupid queue/shuffle would work in a normal sense :P

See the edit.

10:07 PM
Gah. Of course I missed the contest again. Why do I have such crappy luck with time and contests ;(
Could've entered to win a 21:9 ultra-wide monitor from LG :P

;) it's fine.

But Noooooooo
I had all this other stuff & I had to get the date wrong & not be able to work on it. Gah.
First the Ubucon contest, now this. Why the crap can't I get anything done in time?

Maybe you can give some feedback, but I'm still holding out for a few saner heads to all agree.

I finished a CLI skirmish-like game.
I'm trying to decide on whether to REALLY bury the needle and call it something like "notSkirmish" on github, then go pay $4 for stock medieval weapon artwork for the cards - followed by a blog about "How I built a $30k project in a week in 500 lines" and point at the exchange with the author on kickstarter... or whether I should just back off and call it something else.
I still have 15 days to beat him to the mark :)

I'm confused by the formatting. What's what?

We talked about the skirmish card game yes?

10:10 PM
Yes

I told the author I was planning to make an open source free-ish version where donation levels bought decks, and asked where I could buy decks to give people. With me so far?

I was threatened with legal action. So, my first thought was "avoid the conflict altogether".

Well then.

Use a different name, a different card theme, change the rules a little... change everything a little.
My next thought was "Fugetaboutit." in my best italian accent. Just make the exact same thing, since you can't copyright/trademark a card game. Only the name, the artwork, and the rules card. Just buy some stock art for $4, and call it something pretty similar.
I have a working CLI standalone that adheres to the rules. So, as I break it out to client-server and GUI, I have to decide between avoiding the conflict altogether and making a point.
/thought. that's the linear version.

10:21 PM
Sorry, back from lunch.

No problem. I made the logic procedural for @RPiAwesomeness

Yeah, my personal gut feeling would be just give it a new name and ignore the conflict.
You have a very valid and logical point but they seem to have already shown that they take a dim view of community effort.

That was my initial response too, but then I started blaming myself for people being like that because nobody ever gave them a slap and knocked them back.

Instead, focus on what you've made and the community will rally around that.

This is true. Saner heads.

10:23 PM
Indeed.
It's sad people are like that and occasionally standing up to them makes a difference, but not very often :(

That calms it down a little. I'll divert from going that route for the time being. Try to come at it the other way.
FWIW, it works mostly. Now, I have to break it to make it client server, but not a lot.

Do you have the code up anywhere yet?

Not yet. I'm not sure if I should post it before I have it client server instead of hotseat.
It's quite literally about 500 lines though, and half of those are class definitions.

Ugh. Sociology. Dullest reading ever.

@RPiAwesomeness - are you actually having to read sociology or are you trying to divert the conversation on purpose? I'll respect either one. Just to be clear.

10:33 PM

mmm, friday food day ;) - how are things for everyone?

Relatively well. Just debating about exactly how I spend my weekend. You?

not much, next week though is "The Martian" release, going to plan to see that

Things in frozen are going well, but I have about 20 on-hands a day going up... It's a little unsettling that it got this bad before they sent someone to fix it. Guess it's par for the course. Now they're giving me until oct end to fix it, and where I was will be on medical leave from oct to dec. So, I'm just trying to prepare myself for a beating again.
I plan to see Sicario when it hits the boards. Should be a fun one.

I think I'm done theming my install for now, I'm going to try to use vivaldi regular for a while. I need some json help on my new scope, I cant get the search part working

I can take a look.
Where's the code?

on my computer right now ;p

I'll push it to github

Okay.

Its something to do with how the json is nested I think, right now I feel I'm just smashing it with a hammer till I see something work

@Mateo Sorry for the delay. The kitchen sink sprung an unexpected leak that I had to deal with.
Everything is under control now.

ah, I took a dinner break as well :0

Hrm.
CMake Warning at CMakeLists.txt:26 (find_package):
  By not providing "FindIntltool.cmake" in CMAKE_MODULE_PATH this project has
  asked CMake to find a package configuration file provided by "Intltool",
  but CMake did not find one.

aw, not building for you?

Yeah, but I think I can figure this one out.
/usr/share/cmake-3.0/Modules/FindIntltool.cmake exists.
It should have no trouble finding the package.
Something is messing up the search paths.
Oh wait...
So... this is interesting.
Apparently /usr/share/cmake-3.0/Modules/FindIntltool.cmake is provided by the cmake-extras package.
And the cmake-extras package puts the file in the wrong place.
...for CMake 3.2 (which I have installed).
I'll have to backport it to my PPA.

11:45 PM
oh, that's right you installed the new versions

I'll have it built and published in the PPA in about half an hour.

@ByteCommander Done, as per your request. ;-)
