hey @Fabby, your Meta Stack Exchange question made the meta newsletter!
18:19
Is it ok to use this URL in an answer? dllme.com/dll/files/d3d10_1_dll.html
@Mitch ^^^^^^^
@A.B. No I don't think so. Which question?
0
A: Installer in WINE can't find `C:\users\myusername\Temp\_is6da.tmp`

A.B.There is a missing DLL d3d10_1.dll. You can see the error message if you start wine via terminal: err:module:import_dll Library d3d10_1.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\users\\aboettger\\Temp\\_isf61a.tmp") not found Therefore download the DLL e.g. here, place the file in ~/.wine/drive_c/windows/...

I guess if you know for a fact that fixes the problem, I think it would be OK.
@Mitch I changed it and now refer to Google.
18:25
@Seth nooooooooooooooooo
@intex What message?
(Link?)
@ParanoidPanda I'm hoping for this weekend.
@Seth That's nearly the most votes I've had on any question!
@Fabby n00b
:+)
Also, for anyone asking why George isn't available... something is preventing him from speaking. And I haven't figured out what it is.
18:30
Poor George
He got muted
@Rinzwind Unix command, mail server etc...
;-)
I got a badge for "hard drive" tag :D
@Fabby You ve send me some graphical message and written test?what was that
@intex Are you sure it wasn't one of the dumb tests?
entrance exam for using ubuntu chat :+
18:32
let me look onto my activity log...
@Fabby some Arabic type msg
@intex Can someone pin this to the wall, please????
44
Q: He who must not be named? (aka Anyone can ping everyone in chat)

FabbyFor some or other reason, typing @ᔕᖺᘎᕊ in a chat room pings everyone who's been in that chat room for the last 7 days... Seems to work in all chat rooms (I only tested 2 as I don't want to be a jerk) How should we proceed?

5
@intex Can you star that?
It's the answer to your question...
@Fabby @ᔕᖺᘎᕊ yes this one what does it mean
@intex it was a bug.
And I accidentally fired it.
I wanted to say "ᔕᖺᘎᕊ with an @ before it."
what does it mean and what language is this ᔕᖺᘎᕊ
18:36
but I said: "@ᔕᖺᘎᕊ with an @ before it."
Tamil or so...
It's someone's name
can you translate in Hindi or English
@ᔕᖺᘎᕊ \o
@A.B. I's fixed now...
Doesn't work any more.
:(
18:38
Used to ping everyone that had been in chat in the last 7 days...
I so do not get that select :P
MSSQL is weird
@A.B. can you star the one above?
I am not doing anything creative for many days in Ubuntu?
(the "he who must not be named?" one)
@Fabby done
18:42
@Fabby Ah, that explains why my StackExchange app said I had a message from you in chat last night. :)
@Terrance >:-)
some cyber agency some sheiks from UAE, people from AA group ,and many NGO's for schizo people collectively trying to make me mad
Hmmm... seems like Oli suspended George.
@NathanOsman Again??? Why this time?
I guess I need to head back to the drawing board.
Some people like him. Others don't.
I can understand the reason he bothers some people...
So some adjustments are needed I guess.
Plus I really want to rewrite him in Go.
And that will take time. So... for now, George is going to hang out only in the Sandbox.
I'll be fixing that shortly.
18:45
@intex Not much rep earned...
Is this news is true or fake about stampede
@intex It's on Al Jazeera....
So I would give it a lot of crdibility...
yes true
I don't understand anything

Q: Broken dependencies: console-setup-linux, initramfs-tools. Xubuntu

ga7pilotLinux newbie and as yet still unproductive dunce. I ran the terminal commands here and now have these broken dependencies: console-setup-linux and initramfs-tools. Those commands must have been obsolete because it also reformatted my menu system as if I now have some other, probably earlier, vers...

But the answer is even better

A: Broken dependencies: console-setup-linux, initramfs-tools. Xubuntu

FaronIf that's have to do with what you have been working on personalizing your desktop. Then I would suggest you to delete /home/yourusername/.config since that is what holds all of information on your preferences and all of that. This course of action would enable you to restart all over again and...

@A.B. :D
The first one is someone who did an rm -rf in the wrong spot probably...
Checking on food!
C U L8R...
18:52
@Fabby Cu =)
@Fabby bye Fabby have a nice meal.
Holy single-star wall
@NathanOsman o_O wat
@Ravan BTW, if you starred all those messages directed at you, please try not to star everything that's useful to you in the future.
It floods the wall with single-star posts and since they're newer, they often take precedent over older, but more highly-starred posts that other people may find more useful than those you starred.
:)
19:34
@Fabby hey dude, what was that weird ping thing?
Neverming, it is on the starz wall
@Lucio :-)
@intex Chicken tandoori with home-grown tomatoes and cumin rice!
btw, how the duck were you going to type specifically ᔕᖺᘎᕊ O.o
@Lucio It was a user in another chat room.
and everyone got pinged
LOL.
funny!
19:37
lol
Meta.stackexchange chat
ouch
so bunches of people running in
@Lucio LANGUAGE! O.O /s
@Fabby lol xD
And then I made the mistake of trying it here too...
19:37
sorry..
@Fabby I was wondering why when I clicked on the notification it never took me to the message.
even though the user has never been here, everyone got pinged...
I asked a chat mod to delete it.
that didn't help
Because by the time I realised what I had done,
it was too late for me to delete it.
Yes, it did!
no other prankster could copy it and try it out somewhere else!
>:-)
are you joking? It was everywhere!
19:40
No , just here and meta.stackexchange chat...
are you joking? It was everywhere!
oh
@Lucio Only people ho have been in this chat room for the last 7 days
That is, a lot of people
and everyone who dropped by the meta chat room.
@Lucio Yup...
And as everyone knows me...
right
19:41
everyone keeps asking: what was that weird Arab ping about?
fun time heh
haha
(whereas it was Tamil or so...)
And the biggest joke of all?
the user himself never got pinged!
:D
xD
19:43
It was a hard block in the source code for some or other reason.
(that got modified afterwards, leaving that in)
The developer who was on it in minutes even threatened to freeze all rooms that this was used in!
>:-)
(until he fixed it)
lol wut xD
did it do anything else besides mass ping?
Nah. Only stole your social security number, DOB, and your first-born child.
Nothing too serious
:D
damn my physical first born child
It could had been used for a DoS depending on how it was handled, so it was quit more important than just a ping.
19:46
hackers are getting better and better
@Lucio Oh, good point.
@Digi Quite.
@Digi nope
@Ravan awesome! I'm happy to hear that :)
@Lucio Well, no one who was aware used it in that way...
we all realised it was important enough not to mess with.
@Digi It was discovered by accident.
@Fabby He was referring to my joke ;)
19:49
@RPiAwesomeness :D Ah!
>:-)
anyway, can you imagine what that would have done as a comment to a question like this?
(or just a few in the top 10?)
@Fabby I guess you received (and will on the days to come) the pay check in the way of ping spam, all of them directly to you :-)
@Lucio :D Yup!
Twice in two days? What's up @Lucio
Heh, too many pings to omit :)
Just the same, improving the app for the thesis
Hope it all goes well.
19:57
@Lucio ??? Thesis?
What's the title?
Yeah, it is all about pinging as many people as you can on a geek social network. Kinda fun :P
Thank you
@Lucio You're welcome...
Native English speakers forget to correct any non-natives...
So us non-native ones should stick together! :D
and for that, we non-natives, thank
lol
I've got a few funny stories people misunderstanding each other because a native was speaking to a non-native...
I once even nearly got fired for using inappropriate language.
@hbdgaf thanks.
@Fabby Oh, that sounds like a gem
20:02
I once called a woman "a silly twat" which to an English woman means something else then a Scottish man...
Case in point
lol
@hbdgaf That made my firefox crash...
can't stop the laugh xD
(but it was worth it)

Q: LXDE, Ubuntu 14.04 - use i3 as WM instead

baxxI've installed Ubuntu 14.04 with LXDE using crouton on my chromebook and it's working fine, I would like to try using i3 with it instead though (which is what I usually have on my main system). I'm not sure how to go about this - on my other system it was just a case of choosing i3 then selecti...

It's one of the greats.
@Seth Sorry for late reply, was at the gym. Sounds like a bug! Report it?
@hbdgaf You must have heard about the Italian in Malta
@Fabby Nice one.
@blade19899 mmm, seems more likely they changed the keybindings, right?
20:10
@Seth Not that I've heard of. I haven't played 0ad In while.... Gimme a min...
oh that's really strange @blade19899.. I just opened it again and everything works fine o_O
@Seth Yeah, mine just worked as it should
@Seth Weird. :/
well thanks anyway xD
@Seth No problem buddy :)
@Seth only 18 active bugs left :D
I'm writing a field for a form. What is better, Nation or Country?
20:22
@Lucio country
I've never seen "Nation" being used. Definately Country
ok, thanks guys
Nation will be..
jk :P
Country is the better word, because in Poli-Sci there is a distinction between a few that confuses people: infoplease.com/world/statistics/state-country-nation.html
@hbdgaf That's interesting
20:25
/me had to take a college Poli Sci course in High school...
@hbdgaf Interesting...
@hbdgaf "had"? Who made you?
I had a programmer teacher who was received in Poli Sci (if i'd get that term right)
:P
@Lucio In my language that's called PolSoc...
Awww. Honestly, nobody made me. The teacher had to fight to get them to let me take as many college courses in my senior year as I did. It was that or "Keyboarding" though, which I obviously wouldn't have learned anything from taking.
@Fabby like the socket of a Polish, that's great
20:31
@hbdgaf :D You're lucky that your system is so flexible...
@Lucio >:-)
@Fabby Any system (almost) is flexible if you hit it hard enough.
I was in a Catholic High school (we call them colleges)
and you basically had a choice between: Latin&math, Latin&Science, Math, Science and economics...
tough choice when you're 15...
It is. I've said for a long time though, class choices should be based on aptitude not decisions. You don't get to say "This is what I want to do" then try and fail. You get to take a bunch of tests, and are given a menu of what you'ld be BEST at doing. Still choices, but more of a "set everyone up for success" instead of "teach them all a little bit of everything"
I would be an economist.
@hbdgaf Yeah, but Joe Average will still tend to go with the flow and study what's fashionable at the time...
@Lucio You were good at it but didn't like it?
20:36
yep
@Fabby This is true. You'ld get people set up learning a trade though. "Sorry, you don't have the aptitude to do that track. You'ld make a great welder though. Why not give that a try?"
@hbdgaf I would have been a translator: I was good at languages, but didn't like them as a specialisation...
So now I can get by in 10, which is good for international jobs...
...of which I'm not landing any :-(
:( - Sorry.
@hbdgaf Never apologize for anything for which you're not the cause!
;-)
Okay, word for gesture of sympathy/empathy
20:39
@hbdgaf :D
Much better!
"My condolences" is what springs to my (weird) mind! >:-)
Totally different connotation here.
@hbdgaf That's a good one for English.stackexchange.com
Spanish SE is dead btw
@Fabby It's sort of there already, but it doesn't give a word for specifically "gesture of X". english.stackexchange.com/questions/19334/…
Scratch that. It was buried in a comment.
reading again...
20:46
My commiseration to you.
@hbdgaf sounds better...
Mi lamento para tí.
my battery is dying.. see you later guys
Still going to ask though... ;-)
@Lucio Hopefully not the battery of your pacemaker! ;-)
O.O
@Fabby Go for it. I haven't been on that one long enough to know if it would be considered a dupe or not.
Fabby is on fire with the jokes today.
20:55
Ah!
:-)
Here's a good one stackoverflow.com/q/29492895/486399 - I don't understand the downvotes except that it's an anti-pattern
@Fabby Commented as such, and put some data on the one on english.se
21:42
So we moved my grandpa over to live near us and we just got a tella-marketer/donations call ... to our house asking for him...
@hbdgaf upvoted and left a comment...
My server completely ran out of disk space. Even bash completion didn't work.
21:57
@NathanOsman Oh dear
@RPiAwesomeness My reaction to this is to hold the horn away and shout "Hey, Emma, can you fetch gramps?" and then tell the tele-marketer: "Stay on the line, someone went to fetch him!" and then leave the line open, but on mute and check for a hang-up every 15 minutes...
Do that often enough and they will put you on their "don't call these @r$ehole$ ever again" list!
Bah. I'm taking a Sociology CLEP test prep class and it's horrible. Definitely CLEP-ing the crap out of this class, do not want to have to sit through an entire actual class on the stuff :P
@RPiAwesomeness CLEP means nothing to me: please enlighten the Alien...
(a test-class???)
22:10
Not sure exactly what the acronym is, but CLEP tests are tests you can take to prove you know enough of a subject to skip the entry level college classes on the subject
Saving money & time ... and brain cells when it comes to Sociology
@RPiAwesomeness :D
.xyz domain names are on sale for a dollar.
Good for work servers ... not much else though :P
I was hoping there would be some good shortened domain names.
But no such luck so far. Someone has qms.xyz.
What for? Just to have?
22:18
I'd use it for shortened links.
quickmediasolutions.com/something => qms.xyz/s
But somebody already has it :(
@NathanOsman Cool!
(if you would have it!)
@NathanOsman Ah
@GeorgetheDev time
@Fabby The current time is Thu, 24 Sep 2015 22:19:31 GMT.
Huh.
I thought... he...
22:19
@GeorgetheDev: Ah! you're out of jail!
Oh right. Hang on.
HE'S BECOME THAT THING THAT ROBOTS DO WHEN THEY BECOME SELF AWARE!
@RPiAwesomeness SkyNet?
Okay. He's only in the sandbox now.
No...Singularity?
22:20
There is actually a Belgian ISP whose name is skynet: skynet.be
@GeorgetheDev: time
@Fabby The current time is Thu, 24 Sep 2015 22:20:55 GMT.
@NathanOsman Is he?
@Oli George has been relegated to the Sandbox until further notice. I'm going to keep him there until I can find a way to make him less annoying. I'll ping you and some other mods when that time comes. Until then, he'll stay out of this room.
@RPiAwesomeness CLEP == collegel level equivalent protocol. If you hear "AP" think "if you score well enough on the final different colleges will give you different levels of credit, but college level"
WHAT THE.
Oh.
22:21
@hbdgaf Ah
@NathanOsman I learned a new word: relegate!
In my case with poli-sci it was AP - and I scored a 4. My professor said something like "Yes, but if you ever studied you could have gotten a five..."
@GeorgetheDev time
He's gone now.
Visit the Sandbox to say "hi".
@hbdgaf >.>
22:23
@hbdgaf What's the max?
5 or 6
I took AP Economics. Loved the class, hated the tests
Why???
Or maybe not loved the class, but I did like them.
@Fabby 5 is max. 4 is most anywhere gives you a semester of credit. 3 is low end places give you a level of credit. It may have changed since then, but it was that way at the time.
Sounds like if you like the one, you would like the other...
22:24
I don't really know. They were just horrible. Maybe it was the way I was taking them, online (hate online tests), but I dis-liked them intensely.
Saw it...
On-line???
Great cheating!
No :P They were practice ones, I never took the real one
break into the remote server and give yourself straight As.
@RPiAwesomeness Have you ever seen "War Games" from the 80s?
"Do you want to play a game?"
I may go for the CLEP one though, I guess AP is kinda the big "oo. You did AP. You must be really smart." while CLEP is more of the average level of testing.
@Fabby I want to, but have yet to.
22:26
Most meaningful statement in that movie was "The only winning move is not to play"
I know the premise of the plot though
@hbdgaf as far as a theme for your game goes... I thought some more about the operating system / distro idea. SuperTuxKart (the racing game) did a slight spin on that and went with open source mascots like Tux, Beastie (BSD), Gnu, Hexley (Darwin), etc.
Could that work?
WOPR
@hbdgaf followed by "How about a nice game of chess?"
I play chess.
22:27
@hbdgaf You need crazy ideas for a game?
I'm crazy! ;-)
Smoke! BRB.
@Fabby Crazy ideas for a game include metasploit.
@NathanOsman It could. I'm thinking dune weapons at the moment, but I'm having trouble finding the artwork. I'm thinking about just posting blank cards with a skinning engine. Then people could chain-link to the project page and give you skirmish themes, OS themes, dune themes, or whatever else.
That sounds like the best idea. I'll gladly contribute a mascot theme :)
@NathanOsman Holy crap, sports teams would be epic.
Definitely doing the skinning engine.
This is going to be fun.
Yes. GREAT fun.
"How do we spell fun soldier" -- "PAIN". "How do we spell victory?" -- ?
22:39
@hbdgaf A security game?
Metasploit was originally developed in perl as a game.
O_o
Seriously, I'm not kidding.
I believe you! You should know! :-)
I'm just surprised...
's all...
This is an easier target set... as is working frozen at the big WM. I need to find my easy before I find my awesome.
I'm just decomposing a problem and finding a solution. Then throwing myself at it. Then finding a better problem.
22:47
>:-)
I want the best problem, but I won't not win ever again.
@NathanOsman - Do you have recommendations for the ranking levels? I like the OS noise as a way to do it, but I'm also prototyping the engine, so I need test sets.
Hmm... I'll give that some thought.
Thank you.
For the OS theme there might be "novice", "home user", "power user", "IT", "hacker", "programmer".
Just off the top of my head.
