@A.B. I saw your answer here : askubuntu.com/questions/634082/… what do you think about using ubuntu-make to install android studio ? It would be easier to install and to keep up-to-date...
@hg8 I do not like it. But that's just my opinion. =)
@Ravan do you see grub menu when PC starts ? did you run sudo update-grub ?
hg8
hg8
08:09
@A.B. fine haha do you mind if I add an answer with this alternative ?
@cl-netbox I see grub with 1.*Ubuntu and 2.Advanced options only these two options
I will try update-grub,@cl-netbox
@hg8 No why should I. Alternatives are always good.
@Ravan so Windows was not recognized during install. Is your disk part table gpt or mbr ? did you install both in efi or in legacy mode ?
@cl-netbox working!!.....great man thank you!
@Ravan Now you see Windows as well ?
08:15
@cl-netbox I executed that command before boot repair.....but forgot to execute later
@cl-netbox yes !!
hg8
hg8
@A.B. great :) I gave you +1 your answer is pretty complete. Just out of curiosity, why don't you like ubuntu-make ?
@Ravan I am happy that it worked for you !
@cl-netbox thank you !!
Thank you =)
I'm not sure anymore. Something was not working. But maybe I should try again
@A.B. problem solved! dual boot
hg8
hg8
08:17
@A.B. ok :)
@hg8 give me your answer
@Ravan I don't like the grub-repair tool - are you interested in an alternative so solve this with built-in possibilities ?
@Ravan Great =)
an upvote for @cl-netbox
=)
@A.B I decided to offer bounty to my question ...you just answered!!
@A.B thank you I will try! that

Q: Some scripts (languages) are missing in my Character Map

RavanI am using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. In my character-map some scripts (Languages) are missing. How can I get them? Is it possible to reinstall them? For example,here there is no mathematics option: apt-cache policy gucharmap gucharmap: Installed: 1:3.10.1-0ubuntu2 Candidate: 1:3.10.1-0ubuntu2 Ver...

@A.B I accepted!...it works!
08:27
@Ravan what about boot-repair alternative - interested or not ?
@cl-netbox Interested!...
@Ravan did you install in efi mode ?
BIOS
@Ravan so no efi partition - grub installed in mbr (legacy mode) ?
@A.B hereadd some more stuff because my question is about some scripts are missing!
@cl-netbox yes sir..
08:31
@Ravan which scripts do you mean?
@Ravan do you have one or two disks in your PC ?
@cl-netbox I need to update all my stuff which I have previously in my system
@cl-netbox one
If the font has the scripts, then they will be displayed.
@A.B. certain local languages,...but I don't know whether they are available or not in that chatacter map!
@Ravan But what languages do you mean?
08:34
@Ravan how many partitions and which of them (number) is ubuntu ?
@A.B. Tamil ,
@cl-netbox how to make my ubuntu more secure!
@Ravan did you install grub to extra partition sda3 ?
@Ravan no need to make ubuntu more secure - it is secure enough just as it is !
@cl-netbox I installed using "something else option".....I tried different combinations....
08:50
@A.B. so I can install any missing fonts! isn't it?
@A.B thank you =)
@cl-netbox are you shocked by looking at my screen shot?
@Ravan I suggest you another layout for better maintenance and better grub reinstall possibility.
Morning.
@ByteCommander Good morning to you ! :)
Anyone knows the regex for a string that starts with exactly 2 spaces, not more?
@cl-netbox what ever you want to suggest please suggest today
@cl-netbox I don't want to change again and again!
08:53
@Ravan not shocked - but can be improved ! - I tell you what to do - but takes a little time ... today is no problem ... =)
Oh, I got the bronze tag badge!
@Ravan yes ---> apt-cache search --names-only '^ttf'
@A.B one question,don't mind
hg8
hg8
@ByteCommander Good Morning
08:56
@A.B how you are checking whether ppa's are correct or not. Are you using launchpad or do you have any other tool for that?
@ByteCommander congrats
@ByteCommander how you got that badge?
@Ravan one more question : what and for which purpose did you install to sda6 and what is installed to sdb (you said you only have one disk) ?
@cl-netbox sdb is my usb!
I used logical partitions instead of primary
@Ravan ok - and what and why sda6 ?
09:08
@cl-netbox sorry boot sda6??
I kept swap, root ,home and boot
@Ravan What do you mean with "correct"?
@Ravan did you create this extra partition with mount point /boot on purpose ?
@A.B. sorry...right or wrong!
@cl-netbox no! no purpose!
@Ravan I Seeking a PPA out. Then I filter by the distribution.
@A.B sorry! I don't understand
09:17
@Ravan Example: PPA for Trusty and VLC
Ok for trusty
@A.B. thank you!
@ByteCommander right!
@Ravan I suggest : back up data - delete all sda partitions except sda1 / sda2 /sda5 - create a new partition for ubuntu / (root) - and if you really want, create another new partition /home. I prefer to create a separate partition for personal data formatted with FAT32 or NTFS so that it can be accessed from ubuntu and from Windows. Generally I always recommend to keep the layout as simple as possible ! If you follow this suggestion it is easy to reinstall GRUB when necessary !
@cl-netbox I have total windows8 in sda1 (boot , home all)
@hg8 testing you (may be)
@Ravan Yes I know but I am talking about the ubuntu part. That's why I said keep sda1 !
@cl-netbox ok...
hg8
hg8
@Ravan aah yes of course...
sda2 Ubuntu swap -primary @cl-netbox
hg8
hg8
09:30
I did not know test use real users
sda3 Ubuntu /root -??@cl-netbox
sda4 Ubuntu /home - ?? @cl-netbox
?? primary or logical!
@Ravan no leave it as it is : sda1 Windows sda2 extended sda5 swap and new (extended) partition 6 for / - install ubuntu including everything (root/boot/home) to sda6.
@cl-netbox this is my first set up i.imgur.com/0DQ49oI.png
@cl-netbox @cl-netbox /root and /home can I install on same partition ?
@Ravan Then new (extended) partition sda7 formatted NTFS for personal data.
@Ravan Yes
so I need to remove /boot correct?
I have nearly 450GB free unallocated space!
09:36
@Ravan delete partition
@Ravan please do all these partitioning jobs from GParted on ubuntu install media and then start installing all ubuntu things to sda6 !
@Ravan follow exactly the instruction -> chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/24301041#24301041
@Ravan Is everything clear for you now ?
@cl-netbox yes!
@Ravan okay - when do you start ?
@cl-netbox I'm not using internet while installing...
is it ok?
09:49
@Ravan is what okay ?
@Ravan I'd move swap to the end of the drive. Otherwise it may always be in the way in case you need to change partitions.
@Takkat but it may be slow system doesn't it?
@Ravan done =)

Q: How to install Latest version of Apache Solr on Ubuntu

RavanHow to install Latest version of Apache Solr on Ubuntu search engine platform on Ubuntu 14.04 ?

@cl-netbox not updating while installing
Swap is for RAM emergencies where the system slows down anyway. You will not feel the difference. In case you need to grow swap it can much easier be done if it is at the end.
09:52
@A.B does it need any configuration?
@Ravan no updating no config except the standard install procedure
@A.B. You know regexes, right?
@Takkat is it possible to speed up system by using more swap?
@Takkat @Ravan I assume he will keep going with ubuntu so it is not important - and when he once want to add another distro it is better this way.
@A.B. How do I write a regex that matches lines starting with exactly two spaces, not more?
09:54
@Ravan not really... what speeds it up most is putting the OS on a SSD.
@Ravan please don't make it too complicated ! swap size minimum matching RAM is good to go !
ok @Takkat @cl-netbox thank you! l apply those changes ! bye =)
another distro will use the same swap. In case we upgrade RAM we may want to grow swap... that's much easier in case the swap is at the end of a drive. But sure, swap can be anywhere.
@ByteCommander ^
arg
/^ something/
@A.B. But if "something" may be everything except more spaces?
I need it for grep.
09:59
@Takkat swap size must be chosen according RAM and so is independent from which distro is used. =)
ah ok
/^ [^ ]something/
You need more swap for grep?
o.O
No....
the formatter eats my spaces
@Ravan: If you have a swap file rather than a swap partition you can experiemnt
But swap is not a replacement for ram
10:00
/^\s\s[^\s]/
I want to grep the output of apt-get -s upgrade to see which packages would get updated.
maybe try this
Put it in backticks ;p
And those lines start with two spaces each.
@Takkat yes you are right but I think RAM is big enough - some say you don't even need swap nowadays ... :)
er... pass it through cut first? ;p
@cl-netbox: maybe
Its a bit of a safety blanket for me ;p
10:02
@JourneymanGeek I also set up swap space of 16 GB even if I have 16 GB RAM - just in case ... :)
I just do the default
I did once have 16gb of swap... on a 30gb drive...
oops
having no swap is like living in a house without an emergency exit. It may work but it should not catch fire.
but that's why swap files are awesome
yeah swap on file is great... especially since hibernating is evil ;)
@Takkat That's why I recommended @Ravan to create a swap partition. :)
But it fails if I add another alternative regex with "|".
LANG=C apt-get upgrade -s | grep --color=never "upgraded|^  [^ ]"
Ah, got it!
Shot in the blue
Have to escape the "|" for the shell!
grep -P --color=never 'upgraded|^ [^ ]'
use single quotes
LANG=C apt-get upgrade -s | grep --color=never "upgraded\|^ [^ ]"
That works.
10:10
single quotes to avoid escaping
I use it as alias, so the line is in .bashrc and looks like:
alias sysupdate='sudo apt-get update && LANG=C apt-get upgrade -s | grep --color=never "upgraded\|^  [^ ]"'
@Ravan did you finish ?
@cl-netbox doing !
following your message!
@cl-netbox only one extended partition possible!..@cl-netbox
@Ravan correct - create a new partition under the extended partition.
@Ravan right-click on extended - create new
10:25
@cl-netbox @cl-netbox In that extended total Ubuntu right?
no choose a size e.g. 20 GB
@Fabby o/
@Ravan o/
@GeorgetheDev time
leaving... Bye!
Bye!
10:28
@Fabby Hello OF ! =)

@Fabby I didn't said "Huh?"
@Ravan no: you said "I don't understand"...
:P
10:32
@Fabby ;)
"Huh?" was faster to type and means the same! ;-) :-)
@cl-netbox
@Ravan new layout should be : sda1 primary Windows - sda2 extended - sda5 swap - sda 6 ext4 sda7 ntfs label data
@cl-netbox I posted screenshot ! how is it?
format sda5 swap
10:34
@cl-netbox after
create new sda7 fomat ntfs
@Ravan ?
@cl-netbox continue!...ignore
@Lucio the first one was Liri, the next ones were Vivaldi - theme was a combo of ultraflat(with changes) and just the folder icons from flatter
@Ravan post new screenshot when finished
10:36
@cl-netbox format or delete?
@Ravan wait
@Ravan format sda5 as swap
@cl-netbox ok
@Ravan right-click sda7 select label and call it data
@Ravan you can grow sda7 if you want in case you need more space for your personal data - you can do this later anyway.
@Ravan new screenshot when finished please
@Ravan I have to leave soon for about an hour ... so please hurry to give me a new screenshot !
@Ravan again : sda1 primary Windows OK ! - sda2 extended OK ! - sda5 format swap - sda 6 format ext4 - sda7 format ntfs set label data
@Ravan I am leaving now, will be back in about an hour - when finished partitioning as advised install ubuntu to sda6 - select mount point / - good luck my friend - see you later ... :)

Q: Why doesn't Ubuntu (and Mint) install a boot sequence

SteinI've tried to install a new Linux operating system and I've tried different flavors (x)ubuntu, Mint etc. With and without encryption, with and without LVM, but I'll always get the same error. When rebooting after an error free installation, my PC will boot up and skip along the the boot order: ...
