@Oli: You have rabies in one arm?
for ii in everything:
burn(ii)
I'll check out rsync, though. I just got a new laptop, but the Ubuntu on my old one is way too set-up to start from scratch again

A: How do I "duplicate" a server?

Journeyman GeekIf all else fails, there's the old fashioned way - On Ubuntu or debian,use dpkg --get-selections to dump out a list of installed packages, and install them with dpkg --set-selections. The equivalent of this for red hat based distros is yum-debug-dump and yum-debug-restore (optionally with --insta...

but I want to reinstall my Windows on the new one because I neglected the old one (only use it for games) and it's now riddled with viri (the scientific plural of virus)
I used cp when I did it but this method works quite well
hm
That's perfect
00:03
Alternately....
I like the idea of a fresh Ubuntu install, but I can't bare to do that when I think of all of the tweaks and packages the one I use now has
softwarerecs.stackexchange.com/questions/16376/… some of these options look shiny
sadly, the software I'd really prefer here is dead
00:28
Found some old style label makers today :)

old old school
and they look like they could survive a nuclear war
The one does like 3/4 in wide letters
@JourneymanGeek What's the software you prefer
?*
@AmagicalFishy: The late and lovely remastersys
Would turn an install of ubuntu into a installable livecd
the developer ragequit. Someone else tried to take over, complained that the original developer wanted to charge 50 quid for the source code and... charge 50 quid for access to the software.
There seem to be other forks... hmmm
hmm
github.com/ch1x0r/respin looks promising, via remastersys.org
However I've known of this thing's existance for all of 30 seconds
and have no idea if it'll work
If you try it, let me know
00:46
Ooo, lucky number!
777 users
@RPiAwesomeness oh, you should put a web app up of that, that is fun
Mine doesn't really look like me:
Those glasses are too small.
00:57
Not bad.
@Mateo Totally :D
The percentage of forehead to hair is wrong in the last one ;)
01:12
Phoo. My hands are ugly when they're cold.
@JourneymanGeek Ah! I'd try the Respin command line, but my old laptop died, so I've the HD in an external case
ahh
Yeah in that case the fresh install + package install + rsync with the right flags is what I'd do
01:26
@Lucio working a bunch. Haven't been on SE in months
02:14
Wait, they're making a peanuts movie? It will probably ruin the whole franchise.
02:49
this is fun, almost have a theme I like that isn't default:
oh that's cool!
and yay, I'm not the only one with nautilus, FF, and chrome as the top launcher icons xD
just have to get back the launcher highlights back and change the top bar icons to white...
also liri browser is intresting - they also have it on Ubuntu phones
That is interesting.
But I'm feeling a bit leery of this liri browser ;p

Q: Start server from terminal using a script

user5858I've a server "nodejs server.js" and I want it to restart as soon as it crashes but only if previous restart time is more than a second. This will prevent my email being flooded if the server exits immediately. Here is the start_server.sh which restarts it. I've placed it in @reboot in crontab ...

@A.B. Morning.
@GeorgetheDev what time is it?
@NathanOsman The current time is Wed, 23 Sep 2015 04:46:43 GMT.

But yeah, I'm apparently behind on standard vaccinations too so this has been an interesting couple of weeks (MMR, Typhoid, Tetanus, Flu, Yellow Fever, Hep A, Hep B, Rabies, probably Polio... and antimalarials). Thankfully I'm okay with needles.

hg8
hg8
@cl-netbox Good morning my friend :) Congratulation on your ~2k
@hg8 Thank you very much - I just realized - now many restrictions are removed ! :)
hg8
hg8
@cl-netbox you can now freely edit
@hg8 yes, this is a big advantage - how many reps do you have currently ?
hg8
hg8
@cl-netbox ~1918. I am getting closer too :)
08:41
@hg8 That's not too far away - maybe you will break it today or tomorrow ! :)
hg8
hg8
@cl-netbox I hope so =)
@hg8 you could ask @A.B. if he could give away some of his to you ... if that's possible at all ... JUST KIDDIN' ! :D
@cl-netbox I could start a bounty =)
@Ravan Thank you so much - Did you get your dual boot environment running ?
hg8
hg8
@A.B. Please not a too hard question :p

@cl-netbox I have lot of data!....busy in back-up!

09:09
@Ravan as you want! thanks!
@cl-netbox GNOME is great =)
@hg8 few seconds gap it seems,...
@cl-netbox I don't want to take risk!
hg8
hg8
@Ravan indeed thanks...
@cl-netbox I will clean total hdd!
@hg8 it's ok!
09:11
@Ravan storing separate is the opposite of risk !
@ByteCommander o/
@cl-netbox but I will clean totally!...by the way I faced i/o error with my usb
@Ravan I meant it for the future.
Going to hit 7k today, I hope. \o/

Hello @ByteCommander :)
@ByteCommander GOOD LUCK ! Don't worry, it will happen ! =)
Good morning hg8.
@A.B. AGREE ! =)
@ByteCommander have you got anything now?
Thanks, I'm sure it will. Only need 15 more points.
@Ravan What do you mean?

09:15
Thanks for your edit @A.B. (askubuntu.com/q/677405/338915)
wait@ByteCommander
@ByteCommander now too close!
@Ravan Please do not serially upvote me. Only vote when you like the post, not the author.
Besides, if the system detects it, it will revert all of your votes for me and send you a harsh warning.
@ByteCommander wait man !! look at my profile!
I vote very less! than raising flags@ByteCommander
I just want to make sure that you know SE is not appreciating that kind of behaviour.
Although you already have 2528 points, you're still pretty new after 41 days.
And it sounded like you wanted to push me over the 7k line a bit...
I appreciate every vote, of course, but I don't want to risk them therefore! ;)
So what is with your profile?
I don't see anything special...
@ByteCommander no special! but I vote less!
I vote only when I like posts
I know rules man!
09:21
That's very good. :)
I am near to gold badge @ByteCommander
@Fabby @JacobVlijm Reopened the workspace question.
@Ravan Which one?
"Marshal" @ByteCommander
@Ravan Oh, respect. I'm still at 288/500 useful flags for that one.
My next one will probably be the "Copy Editor". 121 more edits to make...
@ByteCommander good luck!
09:30
Oh, look. I'm on #2 in this weeks reputation change ranking, right behind @A.B. stackexchange.com/leagues/31/week/askubuntu/2015-09-20/…
@ByteCommander =)
hg8
hg8
@ByteCommander well done :)
@Ravan just a little hint : 'man' in this context is a harsh emphasis, what I know you didn't want to express. A positive emphasis would be : wow, great man ! :)
@ByteCommander =) great
Thanks. I'm looking forward to mod tools access at 10k...
09:32
@cl-netbox thank you!!
@A.B. Beware - @ByteCommander is hunting you down ! =)
@cl-netbox I am not native english speaker!..thanks for your guidance
Nah... It was one or two good answers this week, but other than that I'm much slower...
See my monthly(#9)/quarterly(#14)/yearly(#25) rankings...
@Ravan You're very welcome - my native language is German. :)
@cl-netbox I have already noticed =)
09:35
don't mind every one- It is highly difficult to cross @A.B
in month/week
@A.B. Is leading all rankings...
hg8
hg8
806 week reputation for @A.B. ...
So forget about it at all - you might break your fingers !!! =)
Only in the all-time ranking people like Oli are better than him - because they had 4.5 years advance!
@cl-netbox what will happen if I use win8,Ubuntu,kali
is it possible?
I mean is it ok?
09:39
Besides of @A.B. 's rep points : great answers - great overall knowledge !
hg8
hg8
@Ravan You can do it
@cl-netbox I need screen shot for firefox with menu opened!
@Ravan if you first prepare partition layout correctly before, then install W8, then install ubuntu everything should work fine !
@Ravan When you install another linux distro alongside ubuntu you will have permanent GRUB work to do.
@Ravan Did you know that you can boot from iso files by adding entries to GRUB menu ?
Why is having two linuxes giving problems with GRUB?
@ByteCommander Everyone, Thanks a lot!!!
09:45
You just have to make sure you know which OS has the one in use and always update this one, because updating the other one will be ignored.
@Ravan That is a good alternative to installation of maintenance systems like Clonezilla or GParted.
I'm away in my firefox tab forest for some question hunting...
@ByteCommander Not problems but extra work ( every time after kernel upgrades in every system ).
@Ravan You even can install ubuntu from the iso file without creating dvd or usb. - I did it !
@cl-netbox I guess you can chroot into the system with the installed GRUB and update it from there without booting into the other OS... But never tried it.
09:50
@cl-netbox edit my answer here
hg8
hg8
@Ravan what is the taskbar at the bottom of your screen ?
@Ravan another hint : the little word 'please' in this context is no mistake, maybe a little bit old school but nevertheless, it always helps creating good atmosphere ... :)
@cl-netbox "please" I use every time but I missed this time!...but thank you!
@hg8 In Unity I use task bar!
I don't like dash to switch between opened apps
hg8
hg8
@Ravan How do you activate that ?
@Ravan it's okay - now you can check the answer - edit finished. =)
10:01
@cl-netbox I added one more shot to that please have a look!
@hg8 sudo apt-get install tint2 run this command
hg8
hg8
@Ravan Ah tint! Ok thanks :)
@hg8 ;)
@Ravan well done - I edited again. :)
@cl-netbox now you can directly edit !
without someone approve!
@Ravan I realized this as well - must have something to do with breaking 2K.
10:06
@cl-netbox but you won't get +2
for edit
@Ravan no ? - if not, maybe I get some upvotes then for my answers ? :)
;)
@Ravan Did I explain all things good enough ?
@cl-netbox yes!
@Ravan by the way, why do want to install W8 - it's horrible - a VM would be good enough for testing ... ?
10:12
@cl-netbox yes!...but to test my self
I mean I can't solve dual boot problems because I don't know much about it!
to know more
@Ravan understand - helpful to know about it for helping others later ...
@cl-netbox yes win8, I don't even have key!
Should this be closed? And if so, as what? askubuntu.com/q/677105/367990
@Ravan download enterprise edition from TechNet - evaluation 3+3 months without key - but then you can as well select W10 ...
@ByteCommander unclear?
@cl-netbox doownload? my network killme!
Oli
Oli
10:18
@ByteCommander It's probably fine, it's just a weird way of asking how prefetch works in Ubuntu. On top of an answer, they want a citable resource (which is okay)
@Ravan what speed do you get from provider ?
@Oli hello,....don't mind,may I know how to flag this and this
@Oli my flags declined!
@cl-netbox speed test shows [www.speedtest.net/my-result/4686889171](www.speedtest.net/my-result/4686889171)
@Oli Thanks. I thought so too, but as the question style is pretty different from what we usually have here as good questions, I was not sure.
@Ravan that is not too bad - consider to dl from TechNet ...
@Ravan FYI: The markdown link syntax [name](URL) needs a full URL including the protocol prefix (http(s)://) to be recognized...
10:26
@cl-netbox right!
@ByteCommander ok
askubuntu.com/review/suggested-edits/465968 where did this guy learn English?
@muru what do you mean - I have seen way worse things in the last days ! :)
@cl-netbox deliberately changing I to i? O.o
@cl-netbox about Star OS
@muru @Ravan StarOS is the 'burner' - but this is the best I've seen from him so far ! =)
10:31
Burner of what? English grammar?
;=)
@muru No - that is meant to be "ironic" ! Have you seen some other 'brilliant' outputs from him ? You wouldn't believe it ... =)
@muru hello
\o coming back later :)
10:37
@cl-netbox Bye ;
cu =)

@Ravan The purpose of flagging an answer is to have it removed outright. That doesn't serve the best interest here. The answers might not be perfect (they could do with some fleshing out) but deleting them doesn't help anyone.

@A.B what is g++-4.8?
@A.B. why - what is the benefit - isn't it just additional work to do ?
Oli
Oli
11:27
@Ravan A particular version of GCC's C++ compiler
@cl-netbox do you mean g++ and g++-4.8?
@Oli thanks =)
@A.B. ??? - I only edited ... :)
@cl-netbox These are two different packages.
@A.B. I did not manipulate command and output, just corrected clarification and readabilty of the question ! :)

@Ravan Sure: vlc 2.2.1~trusty1
@Ravan I have my answer written only as a clarification.
@Oli what is benefit of protected question,...apart from "commenting thanks etc"
@A.B ok
@Ravan give me an upvote :P =)
done! @A.B
@A.B can you protect question?
Oli
Oli
11:40
@Ravan It's for questions that get loads of "I have the same problem" comments as answers (because they're from new users who can't comment). We try not to use it too much because it also stops legitimate answers from new users.
@Oli is there any restriction to protect question(apart from reputation)
I mean certain type only protected...
@Ravan which question?
@A.B wait

Q: How to update VLC to the latest version?

IvanAs VLC 2.0 is released, how do I get it in Ubuntu (XUbuntu actually, in my case) 11.10? Any PPAs or packages to download? The official page says "Ask your favorite packager..."

@A.B I flagged this
11:57
@A.B. Is there any benefit of editing reviews beside helping other users - isn't it just additional work to do for improving the quality of community Q&A ?
@cl-netbox only pleasure by helping others
@cl-netbox as @Ravan said =)
@A.B. @Ravan =)
@cl-netbox You get badges.
@A.B have seen that question?
11:59
@ByteCommander can I sell them ? =)
