@ThomasW. around? You an op in #ubuntu-packaging? Someone's kind of vandalizing it..
02:34
btw, does anyone know of any good CLI for Linux beginners guide? My Father's work is starting to provide them Ubuntu USBs for work (system maintenance and some other stuff he didn't tell me) and he asked me if I knew of any good guides.
Unfortunately I learned everything I know just from diving in more than reading..

@A.B. Good night!
05:24
@AnubianNoob sleep well :)
@ArtOfCode No, the functionality and interface has not been changed. Just that the project and package got renamed from ChatExchange3/chatexchange3 to ...6 each. But I'm planning to file a pull request for the main ChatExchange repository, so that there will only be the 6 (Python2+3) version in future. Therefore I will probably rename it again and remove those numbers from project and class names within the next days.
(For 100% compatibility with those applications using the current original ChatExchange.)
To the rest of you guys: Good morning...

Ehm, I think I found a security 'issue' with Ubuntu.
upvotes are in order here: askubuntu.com/a/676089/15811
I fudged up my laptop, and I only got a black to screen at boot up. When I booted up, I started the recovery at the grub menu, and choose fallback at root terminal. And, I saw that I was able to use the add user command. Which I probably could turn into a root user.
Isn't that a security issue?
@A.B I think for you
@Rinzwind I read the first paragraph and already knew it has to be a Jacob Vlijm answer! ;D
07:30
One could have stolen my laptop, and at startup chose recovery and add another user, and I'm fudged then.
@ByteCommander me too _O-
@blade19899 Physical access == root access if user has enough knowledge
@blade19899 nope. It is a feature
This is intended and unavoidable.
physical access means you data is screwed anyways :=D
07:31
If a set the bios to boot at my HD only, no USB, CD/DVD, Network startup. And set a bios password, it still wouldn;t matter
@ByteCommander Really?
@blade19899 you would think. It will take me 5 minutes to bypass that password
Should I ask on AU on how to prevent this?
You can at least take the HDD out and connect it to your own machine and root-access it from there.
@Rinzwind How?
You can't boot from anything but the harddisk. And it my laptop
07:32
BIOS hard reset.
@blade19899 -ALL- bios passwords have -DEFAULTS- that always work
@A.B I already flagged it as not an answer but declined
@ByteCommander Laptop. Isn't that a no go on a laptop?
Either there's a magic key combination for this, or you can take out the batteries...
The former requires googling for the manufacturer's service manual, the latter a screw driver and a calm hand...
I'm asking this on AU. Wanna see what people come up with,
07:33
@blade19899 here is a list of some basic passwords for a BIOS that work even when a password is set: uktsupport.co.uk/reference/biosp.htm
> LKWPETER
o.O"???
Why?!?
@Rinzwind UGh. Every time I think I have a secure machine, someone has to show me my ignorance ;(
@blade19899 only thing you can do is encrypt your disk to prevent anyone -seeing- your documents. But they can then still delete it all
@ByteCommander "Leberkäsweckle"+Peter ;)
@Rinzwind ;'(
07:35
@Takkat xD ROFL!!!
@blade19899 yeah and here the kicker: how many people have lost their data due to messing up themself (loosing pwd for decrypting) versus how many lost their notebook and got their data exposed? My bet: the 1st wins
@Rinzwind decrypting failure may even be more often than a hard-disk crash.
Oh and people encrypt stuff nobody (really nobody!) else is interested in.
@Rinzwind I can only raise my hand here... Forgot PW of some 7z files once, but I don't even remember what I stored in them, so I guess it could not have been important. That was now a few years ago.
see ^^ @blade19899 common sense says: just don't loose your notebook :+)
lol. Yeah you guys are probably right
Still interested in what people can come up with to secure a laptop.
So, gonna ask. And will see what knowledge Au user have
07:43
Only full disk encryption, I guess. And then hope you did not lose it while started.
Well handcuffs could get your hand severed from your body :+)
gps tracker or a mail thingy that sends its location to a mail account on boot.
Thiefs tend to boot up the system instead of just removing and throwing away the hard disk.
@Rinzwind Why not just formatting?
I remember a story of a dude that got his computer stolen and he had some software on it that send him messages every now and then. Took him several months to track the thief down cuz the thief did not even bother with removing the OS.
(Or booting from live)
and here is a good topic on when you do not have tracking software: lifehacker.com/5987302/…
@ByteCommander I would toss it myself. Just to be sure :+

Q: How do I change the location of Gnome Shell notifications?

eLyUKayEeThe GNOME Shell has the notifications at the bottom by default. Unfortunately, I like to use the dash to dock and stick it at the bottom. Meaning I can't see the notifications anymore. Any way to change the locations of notifications to elsewhere on the screen?

@blade19899 Found an article, but in German about how to secure the recovery mode root account: wiki.ubuntuusers.de/Lokale_Sicherheit

You can set a root password, then it will be asked there too.
But it's still possible to edit the grub entries to directly get root without password.

@Oxwivi which port
and what is Samba AD

Oli
Something like sudo fuser -n tcp 53 might work
$ netstat -peanut | grep -P ':53\s'
(Not all processes could be identified, non-owned process info
will not be shown, you would have to be root to see it all.)
tcp 0 0 127.0.1.1:53 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 0 32852 -
udp 0 0 127.0.1.1:53 0.0.0.0:* 0 32851

Who needs QT3 or QT4 to configure a kernel? >:)
0
A: How do I recompile my kernel without qt3?

A.B.I have no idea why you need kernel 2.6. To use make xconfig you have to install the QT3 libraries, and you could download and install the Precise packages. But you could also start make menuconfig So you have done this sooner, as I have compiled kernel.

@hg8 possibly ... might be worthy to keep around if you can answer how to confirm if skype is up or down. Will happen again I'm sure.
hg8
hg8
@fossfreedom you are right. I am really surprise skype is still down...
12:41
@A.B yes ! but not for V V
@A.B I searched lot of time.....no use! ;(
12:58
@A.B. I don't understand your answer. What do you mean by "have done this sooner"? What does make menuconfig do? How can the OP install qt3?
Hmm. Has George been fixed?
hi
@terdon Greetings.
Damn.
@terdon When I was young.
I'm afraid the sentence doesn't make sense. What are you trying to say? That you have compiled a kernel before?
@terdon Replaced by "When I was young, I have done in this manner."
13:04
Ah! :)
But will any of that help with installing the qt3 libararies?
@terdon o/
@terdon Not really, the question was "How do I recompile my kernel without qt3?"
@terdon Updated
@A.B. I just don't understand how your suggestions help. I'm sure they do, but I don't understand how from your answer.
@terdon I meant to say that he must either install some libraries, but no longer exist for Trusty or he must take the path for which the libraries are not needed.
Ah. It would help if you explained that in the answer itself.
13:21
@terdon Ok, updated =)
boo
@A.B. Thanks. But how do the second suggestions work? Are those ways to compile without needing qt3?
@terdon make menuconfig?
Yes
And make config. I assume those will present you with a choice of including qt3 or not. Is that right?

Edit? Close? Delete?
13:47
@terdon I don't understand make && make modules_install && make install
@terdon you need qt only for make xconfig
@A.B. ? I'm saying I don't understand how the second part of your answer helps. You haven't said what it does, you just give two screenshots. I assume that it is a way to choose what dependencies the kernel should have and, therefore, a way to copile without qt3. I have no idea if that's correct though.
@fossfreedom is this acceptable for a q from 2011? askubuntu.com/a/676665/15811
@terdon make xconfig or make menuconfig or make config configures the kernel. You need one of the make commands. But you know that certainly. To build the kernel make && make modules_install && make install
@A.B. I've only ever tried to compile a kernel once and that was years ago. But yes, I assumed that's what it was. So, does that give the OP the choice to not require qt3?
fossy is ignoring me :*
@ByteCommander ha I deleted 95% of that question >:-D
13:53
not ignoring ... work type people keep pestering me!
@terdon Sure. He must only use make menuconfig or hardcore make config
me like @Rinzwind
@A.B. Ah! So what you're saying is that if he simple uses one of the options you show, there will be no need for qt3? That is really not clear from your answer, man.
@terdon o_O
Can you rephrase that?
please? -_-
If the OP doesn't use make xconfig and instead uses either make config or make menuconfig, then he won't need qt3?
13:57
@terdon Yes, that's right
So, the only reason that qt3 is requires is because of make xconfig?
yes
OK, mind if I edit your answer then?
@terdon I would be very grateful.
@A.B. Done and upvoted.
