I didn't get a t-shirt! ;)

Oli
Daily Mail linkage should be a bannable offence. Everytime somebody reads it, their IQ drops.

ha ha ha

jrg
hehe.
Have to admit, they have some funny jpgs. :P

@brunopereira81 whooot

@Alvar woot woot to your woot?

7:02 PM
@brunopereira81 Ubuntu 3.0 xD

lol
yeah

or is it linux kernel 3.0?
added a comment ot clarify...

agree on that

@OctavianDamiean you aren't in the room :P

Oh GOD!

7:06 PM
haven't missed anything ;)

@jrg: What DVDs are you producing?

jrg
@GeorgeEdison CDs. 11.10, desktop.

Oli
Ooo. Doom 3 source code will be out soon. There are going to be a lot more pretteh-lookin FPS shooters.

There is no sound at all in Bonaire 6.

@Oli wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow

7:07 PM
have audio

@jrg Ah, makes sense.
What architecture did you decide on?
...or are you doing some of both?

jrg
Some of both.

Oli
The number of os in that leads me to the conclusion that that, was sarcasm.

jrg
After I thought about it, I ended up doing 3 and 3.

3 of each?

jrg
7:08 PM
yup.

@OctavianDamiean oh sorry, no i have no audio either

Well, I'm guessing any computer from the last 5 years can use either one.

maybe it's in another room

jrg
We're expecting a lot of poor college students tonight, so I'm expecting to be asked "Can you mail me one?" or something. :P

Oli
And wayhey, HP are making ARM servers.

7:10 PM
In other un-related news I hear skynet might be attacking soon!

@htorque I'm in Bonaire 1

doom3? cool, maybe i can try to implement smarter AI :P

Oli
Or a lightswitch.

@Oli Yeah, glad they decided NOT to ditch their platform

@OctavianDamiean switched there too

7:11 PM
They don't know that the session is about lol.

:D
nobody knows what design guys really do :D
besides drinking lattes and using apple products >:D

jrg
what room are the design guys in?

I can't view any of the streams.

there's nothing to view, icecast → audio :-o
@jrg bonaire 1
#ubuntu-uds-bonaire1

7:16 PM
You mean there's no streaming video? :O

jrg
No video. just audio.

...and I can't stream the audio either :(

Doom 3d is the best game ever! :D
played it on mac os 9 256 mhz cpu xD

Ah, I found the links - Chrome won't play them though.

jrg
yeah, it won't.
haven't had any luck with firefox either

7:19 PM
Mmm, pretzels

interesting...
@MarcoCeppi how is that sushi diet going?

@MarcoCeppi hey don't forget to add items that you might already be doing to the blueprint

@JorgeCastro In the AU blueprint?

yeah

@Alvar Excellent

7:23 PM
so like, anything you might already be doing

@MarcoCeppi cool :D

@JorgeCastro Awesome, can do

@JorgeCastro I have super good news for you.
Try updating the Ask Ubuntu Unity lens and running sudo apt-get install audataserver-proxy (assuming you're using the AU Tools PPA).

oh ok

morning

7:27 PM
@ajmitch Morning.

awesome
we should so submit this whole thing to the software center!

Oh Jorge is here. :)

@JorgeCastro via the dev.u.c?

yeah
we need to fix the packaging to shove it all in /opt
and get it out there
so people can use it!

I think, @GeorgeEdison, doesn't it already deploy to opt?

7:29 PM
@ajmitch morning @JorgeCastro hi

@MarcoCeppi Can you explain the last item on the blueprint? I'm not sure I understand what that's about
"Look at seeing if SE can have interesting tab on by default to help improve having unanswered question visibility?"
that sounds really dangerous somehow

@StefanoPalazzo It's what Stack Overflow currently does

@JorgeCastro the LP bug is still open, just let me know when you think it's ready - I was going to use the arb-wrapper script from stgraber to move some files into /opt, but it's possibly not needed.

oh I see!

7:32 PM

I read that as "interesting tab" (week? votes? ...)

@MarcoCeppi Oh, oops.
Sorry, I stepped away for a second.

Yeah! So it could help get better sorted values for us

Yup, it puts the data dump in /opt.
Some of the other packages don't use /opt though.

in that case +1 from me :) that's long overdue

7:34 PM
@GeorgeEdison Right, it needs to go into opt for develop.u.c

Even the binaries?

lfaraone's suggestion is stellar as well. the forums and au don't work together at all!

AFAIK, yes

Yeah, that's his task :P I'm glad I don't have to work on that one!

7:35 PM
@MarcoCeppi What are we talking about?

We talked about a few different ways to handle it. One simple way was a banner that says "Have a question, ask on Ask Ubuntu"
but it'll be hard to know how they will take that, or if they'll accept that as a solution

@MarcoCeppi once we're all approved members, we should think about setting up meetings with the forums council, see if we can learn anything from each other

@StefanoPalazzo I agree, it would be great to start talks and help clear the air
I don't think there are any Forum members here at UDS, or I would have tried to track one down

Uhm... I think we have a problem packaging to /opt...
/opt isn't in $PATH.

we should convince them to get rid of all mandatory logins for a kick-off, then we could start encouraging people to link to forum posts :)

7:37 PM
Can we symlink stuff from /opt to /usr/bin?

or is it just me? I get the "please log in" nonsense all the time

@StefanoPalazzo On the site?

on the forums

@GeorgeEdison I don't know. Ask on the site - tag it with [application-development]

@MarcoCeppi Ask Ubuntu?

7:38 PM
mmmhum

Okay.

The people running dev.u.c and that project actively watch the application-development tag
3
I think those two questions would be great to help fill out their q list

Does anyone have a problem with the main Dash Home menu (default is press super-key) and unity bar appearing behind other windows/applications? I would like these features to always appear on-top of everything else....
in 11.10

@sadmicrowave Yes

yes I've seen that as well

7:41 PM
I tihnk it's Chrome's fault - Are you running Google Chrome?

logging out helps temporarily

no I'm not
@StefanoPalazzo @MarcoCeppi no solid fix for it though?

So does a unity --reset
@sadmicrowave Not that I know of. Let me see if I can track down the bug report
Apparently I'm "Critically low on battery"

what about the cause... I can't even figure out why/when it happens...

I occasionally get the dash coming up behind the rest of my applications. This isn't about fullscreen apps (like bug 763680), but rather everyday (maximized) apps. It doesn't always happen. But when it does, it doesn't fix itself. That is, for the rest of the session, I'll have a behind-apps dash. there are more, this looks like the best one

7:43 PM
even if it's working most of the times, i recommend logging out and back in over restarting unity/compiz in a running session (obviously don't do it if you need anything from the session :D) - this still causes stacking issues.

ATI 11.10 drivers working nicely for the 10 mins test run I did till now :D

yeah, they have a 11 min timer. :P

^^
@htorque ops, there you go, seem it now :P

@StefanoPalazzo "This bug was fixed in the package unity - 4.18.0-0ubuntu1"
@StefanoPalazzo comment #28

7:48 PM
what version are we at?

Q: How to package an application that contains a binary that needs to be in $PATH?

George EdisonI am packaging an application that contains binaries that would normally go in /usr/bin and a shared library that would go in /usr/lib. However, the package guidelines suggest that binaries should go into /opt. What is the proper way of putting these files into /opt yet making sure they are in ...

Not sure about the wording...
@MarcoCeppi ---^

@StefanoPalazzo I don't know :[

hmm bummer
the last PPA update makes my AU lens not return questions
it's returning tags and stuff though

well, it says "unity 4.24" for me

the icon looks nice
oh weird

7:50 PM
@StefanoPalazzo further down people are still complaining that it wasn't fixed in that release

it worked this time

isn't there a special room for this topic?? :)

hehe, listening to didrocks: i guess you can pick up every woman by just saying "unity" with that french accent. :D
2

or like Rick James

@htorque LOL

7:52 PM
@htorque haha xD

not that it's important... wasn't 11.10 supposed to remove Synaptic? it's still there

upgrading to precise - bbl

@htorque backed up everything? :)

not extra for this event :D

jrg
As soon as this deja-dup backup is done, I'm making the leap to Precise as well
and then removing the gmail filter for precise-uploads. :P
so i'll get FLOODED with email. :D

7:56 PM
I mention it because the upgrade failed for me, such that I couldn't boot
and I was glad I had backed up everything before

what happened?
the system i upgraded as soon as the repos opened is running fine
with backups it's less of a brave action...

I wasn't in the mood to debug the error :) it just didn't boot anymore

jrg
well, I have to make the upgrade quickly, I've got to have a functional system for the LoCo meeting tonight. :P So I'm really taking a risk hehe

I still have to make the switch to Oneiric on my desktop. When I'm on Oneiric then I'll upgrade my development/testing partition to Precise.

jrg
8:00 PM
Would a question on "where can I get the UDS-P Ask Ubuntu sessions?" belong on meta or the site?

up next: "General requirements gathering for Xorg in Precise" in bonaire4

@jrg Already asked

Q: Are there transcripts of UDS sessions?

forestpiskieI've been trying to listen to one of the UDS (Ubuntu Developer Summit) sessions today - had a great deal of trouble with interference. Are there transcripts available of sessions?

@MarcoCeppi awesome, thanks.
:) nice

@MarcoCeppi cool, where did you find that link? :P

8:02 PM
:D Steals all the rep

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3 libssl0.9.8 libvisual-0.4-plugins wine1.2
sounds good to me. it's on - i'm so brave!

Still no answers :P

yeah, try the forums :D :D :D

Cool! Box.net just gave me 50GB of free space :)

jrg
@GeorgeEdison You'll want to try this - benjaminkerensa.com/2011/10/27/…
haven't tried it yet

8:07 PM
Sweet!

man, those texlive packages are biiig

Q: How to open windows only on one monitor?

VJoI have seen this question, and I would like something similar. When a new window is opened, I would like it to be shown on my primary monitor. Then if there is a need, I would drag it to the secondary monitor. Is there a way to do it? I am using xfce and gnome, and I have 2 seperate X Sessions.

jrg
it's a precise bug!

precisely!

8:17 PM
@htorque Are you upgrading to Precise?

28 secs ago, by htorque
precisely!

jrg
@htorque what was the amount of time for everything to install?

it's still going, so i got no idea

upgrading to 12.04 already?

it downloaded almost 1000 packages though (837mb)

8:19 PM
@htorque You'll be happy to know that there are daily builds of StackApplet for Precise.

jrg
think it could be done inside of an hour?

@GeorgeEdison you be sad to hear that i usually don't use StackApplet :P
but i can test it if you like :-)
@jrg certainly

jrg
ok, time to make the leap.

@htorque Thanks :)

@jrg prepare for sudo apt-get install -f

jrg
8:20 PM
ok, I can do that.
had to do that all the time for Oneiric. :P

still 540 to upgrade (down from 8**) :D
seems bumpy
@brunopereira81 yeah, some users suffer for the masses :D

@htorque would like to try that on a vbox but but... its too soon! no? :D

jrg
we suffer for you, so that in 4 months when you make the jump, your wireless isn't broken. :D

there's nothing you can break in a vbox, but i'd say there's no point unless you want to find and report bugs
there's nothing new to see

jrg
i'm actually doing a demo on Oneiric tonight, moving to precise probably isn't the best idea. :P

8:23 PM
@jrg if you haven't started upgrading, i'd not start :D

jrg
@htorque Too late. :D

@htorque true

jrg
wait, nevermind. i can still stop it.
hm, it's currently 4PM, I have to leave at about 6:15PM to be on time.
Nowhere near enough time to do a re-install and SRUs if it's borked beyond repair. :P

still stop it!
:P

jrg
guess i'll postpone the precise date until tomorrow.
:(

8:26 PM
odbcinst1debian2:i386 was broken, so i purged it, let's see what's not working after the upgrade :P
at least it's continuing now :-)

@jrg sarcasm face there is still time, it will won't be broken, it will be perfect!

jrg
@brunopereira81 It'll be precisely perfectly broken.
:D

jrg
YES. lyz put up her 11.10 slides.

@jrg You cant save me from breaking my wireless when I update to 12.04 I have no wireless and I'm still on 11.04 :P

8:29 PM
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  libmpg123-0 libsdl-image1.2 vlc

jrg
SHUSH. I want to save someone from breaking their wireless. :P
vlc? no worries there!

i'm currently running vlc, so thanks! :D

@htorque (lies) it will be ok!

Q: How to get my software into Ubuntu?

WitekAs a developer of free software, I want to get my application into Ubuntu. Should I provide a source tarball and ask for packaging? Or should I create a package myself? Should I target Ubuntu directly, or should I try to get into Debian and then into Ubuntu automatically?

> 573 not fully installed or removed.

jrg
8:30 PM
@GeorgeEdison I'd say merge.

doesn't sound too bad.

@jrg I'd suggest merging too.

jrg
then don't close it. :P

Flag it?
What is Etherpad?

jrg
etherpad? it's awesome, think google docs collaborative stuff

8:34 PM
it's like mumble, just working.
>:D

@jrg Joined the group... waiting for approval...

> (Kernel not yet decided, probably 3.2-ish)

@JorgeCastro: Please approve me for the Etherpad group!

3.2 would be great

(I see you're the owner.)

jrg
8:35 PM
You should get approved in about 20 seconds, maybe 30.

Bounty offered: What do I need to do that I can access google calendar on thunderbird? http://askubuntu.com/questions/493/what-do-i-need-to-do-that-i-can-access-google-calendar-on-thunderbird #thunderbird

@jrg Not working...

@GeorgeEdison hmmm
it looks like the results returning is actually slower by a lot now that I have installed the dump package

@jrg i think i'm done (except of this one failing package). took 36 minutes.

@JorgeCastro: Is it using the local server?

8:37 PM
how do I check?

jrg
@htorque Hm.
Should I go for it?

no

jrg
ok.

@JorgeCastro Well first step is browsing localhost:19115/similar?title=test
...and making sure it returns JSON.

if you have to leave soon, don't

jrg
8:38 PM
i don't have to leave for ~two hours. goes for it

ah, that works
I think it might be the lens
like if I do "unity keyboard shortcuts" the big popular question doesn't pop up

Yeah - maybe it needs to be restarted.

jrg
@htorque release isn't appearing for me. :(

?
oh, are you using update-manager?

jrg
yeah

8:40 PM
i'd go the "edit /etc/apt/sources.list" route

jrg
i think I'll just edit /etc/apt/sources.list instead
great minds think alike. :P

i also disable all ppas before upgrades.

jrg
I need my nightly build of chromium. :P

@jrg You need the AU Tools PPA too :)

jrg
@GeorgeEdison Yeah, that's right!
but I need chromium more, i'm useless without it.
@GeorgeEdison was it you who was looking for an RDP client?

8:48 PM
if you upgrade, chromium daily is still oneiric-only, so don't replace that :P

jrg
decided against it, can't risk breaking everything when I'm the presenter. :P

@jrg Nope.
@jrg Try tommorrow? :)

jrg
Ok, guess I was wrong. :)
Yeah, trying tomorrow.

i have a presentation next week and i will NOT update my other system till then (it's currently working :D)
you just have to be careful, then ubuntu+1 is not as scary as it sounds like. :-)

jrg
heh.
unfortunately.

8:53 PM
@ajmitch: Are packages accepted into Debian / Ubuntu if Lintian reports only warnings?
...or do warnings need to be dealt with too?

depends on the warning, they should generally be lintian clean though

Okay.
@ajmitch: My "fun" list: paste.ubuntu.com/725705

jrg
oh, before I submit this, are adobe-flash-style packages A-OK? (as in, it downloads it and unpacks it on the install system)

@ajmitch: Is there documentation that explains what each Lintian error / warning means?
...and what needs to be done to correct it?

9:04 PM
@GeorgeEdison try this: lintian.debian.org/tags.html

Great, thanks.

@GeorgeEdison sorry, am at work, what @htorque linked should be useful

hiya

@George an update needs issuing for the Ubuntu repos version of stack applet, no?
damn JUST AFTER I type it >.>
@jrg what package?
also...
Extraordinarily true! http://t.co/DSR67ANu

Can you answer this? Is it possible to programmatically control the Unity Dash? http://askubuntu.com/questions/72266/is-it-possible-to-programmatically-control-the-unity-dash #unity

11:50 PM
@TheEvilOne: Does StackApplet work now?

Can someone tell me if unity will finally allow us to minimize applications by clicking on the launcher icon (at least optionally)?

Lemme check.
Nope. Not in Oneiric.

if you're lucky it'll get added to precise

I meant 12.04
