BTW @MarcoCeppi good job on your session - not sure who was yawning through it :D
@jrg I'm encouraging the use of Ubuntu Tweak 0.6 (it's the best current solution other than GNOME-(Shell)-Tweak-Tool - is that a good thing?

jrg
I'm fine with that.

I asked you because you're more active on the power-users mailing list than I am, so you'd more know the spirit of the people there :)
AKA the powers that be.

jrg
particularly since it's supposed to be submitted "soon"

Sweet
okay urban terror time for me again :D
before novel/working time :D
waiting for Jorge Castro so I can troll

12:16 AM
I am so confused with init.d scripts...
Is there any significance to bash return codes other than 0 == SUCCESS and >0 == FAILURE?

1:03 AM
@GeorgeEdison hm?
@GeorgeEdison i couldnt replicate the error :/
@GeorgeEdison btw i'm reading the bugs...
you have a ton of Fix Released ones
er
actually you have a bunch of fix committed ones
have those been incorporated yet into the current versions?
if so, mark as fix released?

jrg

Had an embarrassing experience with Juju at the LoCo tonight. :(
@JorgeCastro Your answer here is borked. :( - askubuntu.com/questions/65359/…
Although I'll probably get it fixed here soon.

Q: When a object calls another, which class should have that method?

jiewmengSuppose Am I right to say OnlinePortal should have the method initBooking(...), not Customer? I remember my TA saying that its Customer who should have the method (to ensure correct access rights or something)? but if thats the case, its possible that the method is duplicated many times?

Migrate to SO!

Migrate yourself to SO :P

LOl

@TheEvilOne 1.5 hasn't been released yet.

@GeorgeEdison okay...?
@GeorgeEdison i was still unable to replicate their bug
(11.04, KDE, 64bit)

So I can't tag any of them as "Fix Released" yet.

1:33 AM
oic

@TheEvilOne Yeah, I was able to find and fix the bug.

got a planned release date?

@jrg What happened with Juju?

:P

Does anyone know of a command that can start a program and return its process ID?

I always install all the usable Desktop Environments I can find :)
With two hard drives, I'll be able to install anything :D
@GeorgeEdison no :(

@GeorgeEdison pidof program after you run the program

@TheEvilOne Yeah but that won't necessarily return the instance of the program I just started.
Will it?

2:16 AM
depends on the number of instances rnning

@RolandTaylor My biggest problem is bandwidth :)

Q: Enabling longer period of inactivity before suspending

Simon MeredithI'm just wondering how I would go about having more than 1 hour of inactivity. It would be better if there were higher options, such as 3 hours. Thanks!

@GeorgeEdison if its, say, an instance of Python and there's 8 instances, it wont tell you.

@TheEvilOne I'm afraid it is :)
This actually is for a Python app :)

Sad that I'm forced to answer that with "No, the developers don't think it's a good idea :/"

2:17 AM
:P
@GeorgeEdison what app

audataserver-proxy - one I wrote.

code?
/me wants to check running whilst monitoring htop

But it won't run without the python-audataserver package.
You can get that from the Ask Ubuntu Tools PPA.

whoo system lag

jrg
What's Ubuntu's desktop UPS support like?

2:22 AM
woo even more lag
"UPS support" as in Uninterruptible Power Supplies?
@GeorgeEdison know how i can get rid of these Translation entries in my system?
its in the apt stuff :/

@TheEvilOne Translation entries?

Ign http://security.ubuntu.com natty-security/restricted Translation-en_US
Ign http://security.ubuntu.com natty-security/restricted Translation-en
Ign http://security.ubuntu.com natty-security/universe Translation-en_US
Ign http://security.ubuntu.com natty-security/universe Translation-en
those
it appears for all...
natty- blah

Hmm... do they show up in the Software Center under Software Sources?

nope
that's w hy i'm annoyed
and FYI, i'm still on Natty
so i use synaptic
ugh evil system
i'm going to post about those Translation things as a question

How do I search my command-line history for commands I used before? http://askubuntu.com/questions/74631/how-do-i-search-my-command-line-history-for-commands-i-used-before #commandline

and can i yell at the questions feed?
:P

@TheEvilOne Sure.

can I swear? :P
@MarcoCeppi in case you're around, i think i flagged something migration worthy

3:23 AM
Four people flag a question, no one casts a close vote on it?

not everyone has the 3k rep for casting close votes?

@MarcoCeppi i cant cast close votes :/

I can.
Which one needs it?

I know at least two people did :\

I haven't flagged anything for a few days, so it wasn't my fault :)

3:26 AM
or was it :p

I have to write a manpage - only problem is I've never done it before.
Anyone have tips or advice?
...or know how to do it? :)

does the program have a --help flag?

Nope.
Though that's a planned feature down the road.

does it take any useful command line arguments?

@MarcoCeppi i WISH I had 3000 rep though
hint hint

3:29 AM
Only one: --pid-file <FILENAME>.

you could just take a look at existing manpages & tailor them to fit
@TheEvilOne and I wish I had 20k rep, but I don't :P

@GeorgeEdison I just sat down and learned manpages one day

Lol!
You make it sound so simple.

it's tedious, but for simple pages, worth it
Bed time. Got a 10a session o/

@ajmitch but for me, 3k rep is far more easily attained ;P
SO THERE
:p

3:30 AM
@TheEvilOne yeah ok

How are manpages structured in /usr/share/man? I see a bunch of weird folders...
es, de, man1, etc.

@GeorgeEdison google "How to write a manpage" :P
@GeorgeEdison come on, you of all people should know about Google
don't tell me i have to teach you about Google :/

I do :)
I just wondered if anyone knew of a good resource that Google didn't readily reveal.

nope
perhaps maybe the ubuntu how tos if one exists
otherwise nope

Heh - if this happens often enough, I should create a page on the Ubuntu wiki with step-by-step instructions for beginners.

3:33 AM
that woudlnt' be a bad idea man.
a plain, clear text example on how to write a manpage would be pretty nice to have.

I just finished writing a killer init.d script :)
...killer in the sense that it almost killed me :)

:P
@GeorgeEdison after you write your manpage, write the tutorial
because i need to learn how to write manpages :P

Good idea.
Either that or a blog post on 2buntu.

as well i require rep here
i wonder if anyone's going to upvote me :/
i'd really like to have 3k rep >.>

@GeorgeEdison wiki.debian.org/ManPage/help2man <-- why I was asking about whether it had a --help flag

3:38 AM
only 648 left!
:P

@ajmitch That is helpful. Thank you.
I didn't realize that templates were already generated.
Where are the ones that were generated?

@TheEvilOne As a search strategy I'd focus on Debian resources. Manpages are an old system that I'd expect to be addressed in some Debian policy document.

@ændrük hm?

@GeorgeEdison you don't have to recreate the package either, the templates are just copied in from /usr/share/debhelper/dh_make/debian/

3:46 AM
Oh, okay.

@TheEvilOne nothing, just replying to a 15-minute old chat message... don't mind me.

@ændrük so i can mark you as irrelevant for 10 minutes?
:P
@ændrük any idea about this?

Next step: how do I preview an nroff file that I created?

@TheEvilOne bad news, it's an apt-get bug that it downloads translation files even if you tell it to not use them

@ajmitch except i use aptitude
@ajmitch any way to fix it?
natty
(btw you can upvote my thread and post that as an answer unless you want me to answer my own post and be sad)

3:54 AM
One sec, I've found a resolved bug that may match it - I'm fairly sure aptitude uses the apt configuration for this

@ajmitch Is there a command to preview my manpage?

2
A: Preview man-page without installing package

R Samuel Klatchkonroff -man /path/to/manfile.1 | less

A: How can I remove the Translation entries in apt?

ajmitchTo disable downloading translations, create a file named /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/99translations & put the following in it: Acquire::Languages "none"; You may also need to remove existing translation files in /var/lib/apt/lists/

fwiw, this stopped download the translations themselves on oneiric, but not the TranslationIndex files, though I think it should have

@ajmitch Thank you!

@GeorgeEdison yeah, I googled "preview manpage", it was the first result for me :P
SE sites tend to rank well in google

I Googled something like 'how view manpage' and didn't get anything.

4:03 AM
so you got the search right when asking in here, but not when asking google :)
also if you run man man, you'll see that you can run man -l /path/to/man.1

I'd been pursuing apropos nroff but got stumped by the numerous functions of nroff.

@ajmitch check the comment

@TheEvilOne right, pretty much what I said in here - I'll reply on there
just that it was meant to be fixed in a later verion of apt than is in natty

@ajmitch reread my comment
@ajmitch it got rid of most of the stuff, everything except TranslationIndex entries

Yes, what I said
For some reason it's still downloading TranslationIndex on my oneiric system though

4:12 AM
so its a bug
file a bug for oneiric
i'll bump it with natty

I'd want to look at a little closer before I file a bug
As well as looking for any existing bugs filed in LP
For now, I need to head off for a few minutes :)

4:35 AM
I swear that @jorgecastro is a bot - he's at UDS this week & still editing questions
3

I think I finally got that manpage written.

great

5:02 AM
How should I include it in the package?
Should I list it in the .install file?

you create the manpage in debian/foo.1, then put it into debian/package.manpages
one of the listed I pasted earlier explains that

Okay.
Got rid of all of the Lintian errors / warnings for the package itself - just some warnings for the source package now.

morning

5:25 AM
I did it!!!
All Lintian errors and warnings are gone!

\o/

How can I remove the Translation entries in apt? http://askubuntu.com/questions/74653/how-can-i-remove-the-translation-entries-in-apt #aptget

5:43 AM
@GeorgeEdison you fixed up the copyright file & other issues?

Yes.
You can view all of the Debian files here: bazaar.launchpad.net/~askubuntu-tools/audataserver/…
Now it has a much better chance of being accepted... well, that is if I can get an answer to this question.

Why do you want it in /opt? Trying to submit it via the ARB?

I don't know... that's what Jorge wanted.
Personally I think it's alright in /usr/bin.

Yeah it needs to be under /opt/extras.ubuntu.com/packagename to go via the ARB, but I suspect that there are restrictions on putting services like the audataserver through that process
It's something that I should probably sort out :)

That would be great, thank you :)
I'll work on getting the other packages to run through Lintian clean.

5:49 AM
Otherwise it's something that could go into precise & be backported to oneiric

Right.

Which is probably the preferred option for that

I'm still not sure how the data dump packages will work though.

you mean whether you package up a snapshot of them, or just have the package fetch the dumps on a regular basis?
You could have a mix of both, I suppose

How often can packages be updated?

5:51 AM
Depends on when in the release cycle it is, and who's able to review them, and what changes are made
Obviously packages like tzdata get updated as needed

Hmmm... so maybe we could have the package updated infrequently in the main repos. and tell people to use our PPA if they want more frequent updates.

Yep
How often do you get a new dump?

Also, CC BY-SA 3.0 is okay for data in packages right?
It's OSI-approved?

I think it'd be OK for use

@ajmitch Well, the dumps themselves are released 4 times a year - but I can use the API to bring the dump up to date at any time.

For example, the package in the PPA now contains data from up to two days ago even though the last dump was September 1.
Example: this question was asked 6 minutes ago.
...and you can already search for it here.

Then can you have installed systems update it themselves rather than relying on packaged data?
That way, you could have both a packaged set of questions, and a separate directory that holds changes to that data

@ajmitch That's the plan... sort of.
The data server doesn't implement that yet. It updates when it starts.
But don't get me wrong - what we have now works.
Even if we only package one version of the data dumps and never touch it, everything will still work.
(Of course, it will get slower over time, but by then we'll have hopefully implemented something better.)

6:16 AM
Do the data dumps contain the answers as well?

google chrome changed the link texts size! that's strange
any idea on how to fix it?

6:32 AM
@ajmitch Yes, but not the index used by the program.

@GeorgeEdison just curious, how did you make the /opt thing working (visible in $PATH)?

6:47 AM
@htorque I haven't yet.

@billzt for long text you can use paste.ubuntu.com
other file type uploads are not supported. maybe use some service like dropbox for that.
