@GeorgeEdison Server is installed, working on installing Xen now.
@Jacob Great. Did you hear the sad news?
@GeorgeEdison That Steves dead, yes I did just now
02:06
Back.
Apple's days are -1 numbered.
@RolandTaylor Oh yeah... Apple will really see some shares plummeting after this.
As I predicted, the day he left Apple as C.E.O, Apple's walking papers were given.
Mark my words.
@RolandTaylor nah..
03:08
Howdy !
03:49
Hi @OmeidHerat @GeorgeEdison
@RolandTaylor I Predicted that!
@MarcoCeppi is 83.4Hz blocked in your country?
Well I don't want to use OpenSuSe or anything.
@GeorgeEdison :| You did not star it :D
For some odd reason, my keyboard still has the windows key?
We prefer to call it the "super" key.
The Super key refers to several different keys throughout keyboard history. Originally the super key was a modifier key on the Space-cadet keyboard. Recently with Windows and Macintosh computers doing away with large numbers of modifier keys the Super key has become an alternative name for other modifier keys when using a Linux or BSD based operating systems. Knight Keyboard to the Space-cadet Keyboard Tom Knight created both the Knight keyboard and the Space-cadet keyboard. Among the improvements from the Knight keyboard to the Space-cadet keyboard was the presence of two more modifiers f...

@AmithKK @GeorgeEdison Heya !
whatup peeps ?
@OmeidHerat Not much.
@OmeidHerat Hi
@OmeidHerat :( steve died
04:26
I know right
but I am no big fun of him.
he was a great man though.
@AmithKK people like him are great but no my cup of tea.
@GeorgeEdison you good with Apache ?
Maybe... I've worked with it a bit.
Me too
how can I set my defualt htdocs as a DocumentRoot for all domain names ?
like I have set mydomain to 127.0.0.1 and dig mydomain confirms that.
but when i go to my browser and type http://mydomain/ it says DNS failure !
Wait...
that is workign fine
04:50
@GeorgeEdison Visit my Blog with IE You GET BIG MESSAGE
@AmithKK: What's your blog URL?
Wired problem I have.
using dnsmasq as DNS Server
and I can dig mydomain but ping mydomain fails
funny thing is that ping mydomain. works just fine !
@GeorgeEdison any ideas ?
You mean pinging it with a trailing dot?
yeah to make work without that dot.
ah, the joys of DNS
05:05
If I recall, a trailing dot assumes that the previous string is a TLD?
I'm not sure, but for example, 'http://google.com.' is a valid URL.
05:22
@AmithKK I'm sure you did...
and the fall of the Berlin wall as well :D
05:34
Night all.
Goodbye!
good morning!
06:17
Anyone know how long it takes (on average) to get an app approved through developer.ubuntu.com
given that it's a new site & things are still being worked out, it'd be hard to give any sort of average time
@trampster do you have an app you want to submit?
06:40
@ajmitch I submitted by app yesterday and was wondering how long I will need to wait.
that'd depend on what needs fixed :)
06:59
@trampster I see you're also getting it in via Debian, which makes the developer.ubuntu.com process a bit redundant
07:12
Well I'm trying to get it in via Debain, but I'm not making any progress. Debian doesn't really want applications it seems
I'm in #debian-cli as well, I've seen that you've been getting help there & making progress
And even if I can get it into debain, It wont make it into ubuntu for another 6 months
No, that's what backports are for
Most people in #debian-cli are in Europe, so it's sometimes hard to talk to them at the right time of day, but they're more than willing to help sponsor packages
So using backports I can get my app into ubuntu 11.10, 11.04, 10.10 because it doesn't seem to happen (as far as I've seen)
it'd go into oneiric-backports, natty-backports, etc
07:18
How many apps make it in that way?
Can you answer this? Can Ubuntu One bookmarks sync work in Firefox 5? http://askubuntu.com/questions/56882/can-ubuntu-one-bookmarks-sync-work-in-firefox-5 #ubuntuone
At least oneiric-backports is enabled by default, I don't know about earlier releases
I don't know numbers, I do know that the ARB process has been slow, to put it mildly
I'm going to persist with trying to get it into debain
The submission process is very slick so far, But I have also hear that the ARB is very slow.
It will be interesting to see which of the two accepts my app first
I could bet on Debian, but that wouldn't be fair as I'm both on the pkg-cli-apps team & the ARB ;)
just trying to update sid at the moment so I can clone the git repo & try & build it
They other thing is that I don't have a debain install, which makes it hard for me to know if it works or not
07:24
Also one of the people in #debian-cli is active in ubuntu backports
I use a virtual machine for debian unstable
ajmitch - so if your on the ARB you would know how many submissions you are getting and how long they are taking to get through?
I know that since the developer.ubuntu.com site went live a week ago we've had quite a few submissions, none of which are approved yet as all need at least some changes to packaging
One of the most annoying things I dislike about it is the requirement for files in the package to be in /opt/extras.ubuntu.com
We're trying to come up with a sane way to deal with that which doesn't inconvenience people & make packaging harder
I don't think I install anything to /opt so I'm guessing my app will be rejected, (at least at first)
right, unless the ARB handles that step for people submitting apps
stgraber has written some useful tools to simplify that
Why do they have that requirement?
Is it to make sure the app doesn't interfere with the rest of the system.
07:33
pretty much
All this updating is burning through my data cap for the month... good thing it rolls over in a day or so :)

Morning
hey marco, check out the VC. I've literally jazzed it up :)
Though I'm not sure it'll work so well. I might have to remove it :\
14:16
I like how fast VC is Stef
seems really responsive, and quick to load
@lazyPower I'm glad! most of the credit for that goes to couchdb.
nosql \o/
So, this DBA walks into a NOSQL bar, and leaves because he cant find a table.
14:30
the only (only!) annoying thing about nosql so far is that you can't really have auto-incrementing numeric ids
it doesn't work well with the revision control stuff. so instead I do base36 encoded milliseconds since jan. 1 2010. that is why you see things like /rooms/zpm716p/. still better than 32-byte uuids
truth
guids are nice in some cases but unnecessarily byte-consuming in others.
I've experimented with the base of this number. Went up to base 64 at one point, which gave you ids like "Zw_-x". but I had a feeling google wouldn't like it. (Z=25, z=51)
14:48
are you engineering this with <buzzword> in mind?
of course!
jorge did it! there's our first marshal in town. :P

Q: How to see which graphics card is loaded on start or install

Niko NikI have a brand new HP Desktop PC. I have tried to install some versions of Ubuntu (10.10, 11.04, 11.10 beta 2) for 2 days, and every time GNOME is started after 2-3 minutes of work, Ubuntu is freezing. After hard restart it comes the same problem. I give the PC to one PC expert, who has instal...

Did I choose the right tags (other than ati)? Also, is this a case of hybrid graphics? I can't tell.
18:27
hp is pretty useless as the user didn't write which model.
so: driver and ati should be enough IMO
he linked to the model
@Jacob: Hello.
What's new?
@GeorgeEdison not much, didn't have time to finish last night
I'm about to go finish
@RolandTaylor oh, i'm totally blind.
18:43

Why am I here?
too cold at the beach? :D
18:48
@RolandTaylor Ubuntu.
I've never seen this spelling before:
> "...to res-size the partition..."
@GeorgeEdison I mean... idk
I don't belong on the internet.
I get pissed when people say... certain things, do... certain things... etc. I respond. Then the volcano erupts and I get trapped in the explosion.
just relax
hi all
Hey, nice to see you!
blah
I can't
18:54
I have a problem (one more than usual)
Someone is wrong... on the internet.
all the programs I install in wine crashes when I start them!
what should I do?
Use windows.
use windows for windows applications - works (most of the time).
gna!
I HATE windows
18:55
@RolandTaylor trolololo
and I love some of the stuff with linux
you can run windows inside linux (inside windows inside linux)
@Alvar Have you tried running the isntall from the console to see a more verbose output?
(I don't like the "undocumented features"
@MarcoCeppi I only get an error when I start it...
maybe you just need to install some stuff via winetricks
WHICH error?
18:57
Okay
all the installs are "successfull"
what error do you get?
Have you tried running the program from the console to see a more verbose output?
@htorque this program has crashed sorry for the inconvinice
@MarcoCeppi no....
how to?
wine /path/to/app.exe
18:58
wine /path/to/app.exe
cool
funny we said almost the same thing
@GeorgeEdison I'm not helping with that one O.o!
I'll try and reinstall wine xD
The programs I tried to run was spotify, itunes, counter-strike source
all of which I tried to install from playonlinux as well....
all hostages rescued!
:D
19:02
last time i checked (two years ago), cs:s was working fine via steam on wine.
not that that helps you.
:D
no LOLs
the same error on all programs
what to do?
purge?
yes it's the normal windows error, the same you get on all start-ups
@Alvar PRO TIP: Spotify has a linux client.
@MarcoCeppi BUT it requires PREMIUM! I KNOW.

@Alvar Download Windows 8 and try it.
It's free.

@GeorgeEdison nothing is free
for a reason.

@GeorgeEdison where? :O :P
@htorque it sucks
who would pay for it even?
they could have made a -50% deal in the apple store today, no?
Might be worth dedicating a room for investigation here

@htorque At this point in time, they need all the sales they can get.

Is there an easier way to setup a chroot? I want to avoid "installing ubuntu into a chroot"
I seem to remember it being: setup chroot, symlink binaries & directories etc, ???, profit

1 hour later…
21:34
Arg this is frustrating.
jrg
jrg
What is your end goal?
Chroot all users while maintaining their files outside of the chroot
So regular systems like apache and courier can access them
jrg
jrg
arkose on login with the following: sudo arkose -n -h -c "cd $PWD; $SHELL"
this is the fourth time I've heard of arkose
jrg
jrg
copy-on-write sandbox.
@MarcoCeppi Probably all from me. :P
21:38
So, that'll sandbox the user in a jailed folder?
Because I'm not trying to sandbox apache - but the user when they log in via SSH
jrg
jrg
so you're trying to prevent us from installing random stuff, right?
More or less. I'm more worried about you all jumping into each others folders
and copying data
I can't chmod 0750 home folders because then Apache can't get in
jrg
jrg
that'll do it. the $PWD part will restrict us to our own user.
hum, I will try this out
because setting up these chroots is driving me nuts
jrg
jrg
so, if I have /home/foobar, /home/jrg, and i'm logged in as jrg, the only dir i have access to (inside arkose) is /home/jrg.
21:41
if this works, it'll save me quite a few days of playing with choots - which means more development time \o/
Right, so I just need to setup sudoers so everyone can execute arkose, then have it run when they connect?
jrg
jrg
yup.
Secondly - how does a user, or can a user, break out of arkose?
Is it just a jailed shell?
All these answers and more can be found on the interntes!
jrg
jrg
yup. so exit will get us out
but, if you setup something with arkose being persistent....
@MarcoCeppi as far as chroots, go, I take it you have probably seen this? - cyberciti.biz/tips/howto-linux-unix-rssh-chroot-jail-setup.html
21:45
yes! It's not availalble on lucid
@jrg Yeah, I have one setup - but it won't work properly with apache since everything is copied into a chroot.
What I want to do is setup something like this:
jrg
jrg
@MarcoCeppi Ah, gotcha.
k
I guess it's high time I ditch this dev server and move into the PPR servers
Didn't seem to work on my machine
marco@XPS-8100:/home$ sudo arkose -n -h -c "cd $PWD; $SHELL"
/home is bind-mounted, changes will affect your real /home
Starting with network support
/home needs to be on a separate partition for ext4 storage type. Falling back to tmpfs
Using tmpfs for copy-on-write storage
sudo: cd: command not found
