21:00
@Fabby wait, are you giving me the finger?
@Seth It's still ongoing - we play for a couple of hours now and then. The games drag out for quite some time.
@TheX You're slow, aren't you?
>:)
I'd like to think I'm doing better :P
@hbdgaf you crack me up xD
@Fabby lol no... just wanted to clarify that it was what I thought it was...
21:00
@NathanOsman Ah, so like Risk then?
Yes, but way more complicated.
On that note, before a fist fight breaks out... or someone gets slapped with a rainbow trout, I am going home....
Q. What do you get when you cross a crooked politician with a crooked lawyer?
A. CHELSEA
Awww. I was referring to the mailserver breach thing.
@TheX Yeah! I told you to get off my lawn much earlier then now! ;-) :P
CU around!
21:02
It is actually quite hard to design a good thumbnail pic...
@jrg Care to explain? I don't get it!!!
jrg
jrg
YOU KNOW WHAT DONT URBAN DICTIONARY THAT.
Darnit. I can't come up with any jokes that aren't really, really terrible. :(
:20947115 "How is your face like a piano? I can tune a piano and I can tuna your face! smack" (not directed at anyone in particular)
:D
aaand now my reply is broken >.<
jrg
jrg
21:04
@Seth lol.
:D that I get!
@NathanOsman I'd hope so! Risk is pretty boring..
I saw a graphic of a huge bonfire in a backyard.
Caption "Backyard document burning...
Well, now we have confirmation Hillary is running for office."
4
@hbdgaf ROTFL
jrg
jrg
21:05
@hbdgaf Ah yes.
3 stars in as many seconds!
jrg
jrg
So I think PDFs are a file format from $really_bad_place
@NathanOsman So what are you playing?
RPG?
@jrg [cough] SWF [cough]
I wrote a Python parser for SWF files. It didn't do much.
jrg
jrg
@NathanOsman Yeah that could be worse.
what do you parse from SWF
21:06
Mostly just meta-data.
@NathanOsman Does Python have pointers???
Probably just separated the streams... not interpreted them.
A parser? without pointers???
At least not natively. You can use ctypes to interface with C code that uses pointers.
21:07
respect
Yeah, but still....
I could probably dig up the parser code... hang on...
that must have been a huge nest of case statements!
binary blob, indexing, and relative indexing... or you could just write whatever parser as a layer on top of scapy...
Ah, nvm. It's on my old work laptop. Not easy to get at.
@hbdgaf Yeah! But you need pointers for that!
21:08
No you don't.
I mean: it's like writing it in BASIC!
(puke)
I'd rather do that in assembly then a language without pointers!
What really made the parser tricky was the way the SWF format packed data into bytes. Integer width could be any number of bits.
(and I haven't done any ASM in 20 years or so...)
What was that python perl joke?
Python - It's like writing pseudocode that should probably work and usually does.
Perl - It's like writing gibberish that should probably not work, but somehow does.
@NathanOsman so tuples too?
21:10
Tuples?
@hbdgaf :D I don't know either
I don't understand what tuples have to do with extracting variable-width integers...
Bit Tuple Byte
4-bit integer...
Damn I'm old!
A tuple in Python is just an immutable list.
Hah!
21:11
Half of a byte is called a "nibble" if that's what you're referring to...
Damn!
You're right!
nibble!
sorry for being my confused (and confusing) self...
Happens all the time: I'm confused and then confuse the hell out of everyone around me...
jrg
jrg
Oh, there was a good thing
so what happened is it expected the bytes to be in order
(is what one of my ex-bosses used to say)
jrg
jrg
21:12
and then the bits inside the byte to be reversed
(stupid printers)
Actually, I have a copy of Adobe's PDF reference book.
Do you keep it right next to your copy of the Necronomicon?
3
jrg
jrg
@NathanOsman oh? the one that got turned into the ISO standard?
I think an earlier version of that.
@hbdgaf :D and *
BRB. Emergency... :/
jrg
jrg
21:14
> But even with these problems, The Story About Ping has earned a place on my bookshelf, right between Stevens' Advanced Programming in the Unix Environment, and my dog-eared copy of Dante's seminal work on MS Windows, Inferno. Who can read that passage on the Windows API ("Obscure, profound it was, and nebulous, So that by fixing on its depths my sight -- Nothing whatever I discerned therein."), without shaking their head with deep understanding. But I digress.
I saw that a while back.
Terribly funny.
So anyone hear the speculation about Windows possibly open sourcing?
> "... and my dog-eared copy of Dante's seminal work on MS Windows, Inferno."
LOLOLOL.
@hbdgaf Yeah, but that's not going to be for quite some time yet.
@NathanOsman Yeah, I laughed at that pretty hard too.
jrg
jrg
@hbdgaf yeah that speculation is exactly that.
21:17
@NathanOsman Yeah... well they have to give themselves time to rip out all the really embarrassing code blobs first.
jrg
jrg
and then we don't get the version controlled version
we just get a tarball
Well do you really think they would want you to see commits that happen right after patches?
@jrg ...or they throw it on GitHub without any history.
jrg
jrg
Or that
but seriously - that would be such (SUCH) a large departure, that i'm not sure i'd believe it if it happened.
i could see major portions being open sourced
but not the whole thing
Yeah. It would kill ReactOS for sure :P
21:21
@jrg Yeah, fair enough. That is probably spot on.
jrg
jrg
like, i know from the gig i had 2 years ago that the printer driver interface is a complete wreck.
and I can only imagine that the rest of it is just as bad.
so anything tied directly to the kernel? Nah. probably not.
but I could see say, explorer.exe, skype, control panel, and some of the "minor" things
hyper-v. i might even be convinced to lay money on some elements of hyper-v.
I'ld say the UI probably also, although not the multimedia bits. Since that's still a feature difference sell point. So with the thousand different purchasable versions - anything that distinguishes between those versions is probably right out.
@hbdgaf So many people have the source code already that they might as well opensouce it!
@jrg The NSA has it, the FSB, ...
jrg
jrg
@Fabby If I had enough money I could get the whole thing.
For "auditing purposes"
Indeed...
jrg
jrg
21:26
I know that banks do that
A few years ago, the Russian Government was going to drop Windoze
(if they didn't get the source code)
(Vista era even)
So...
You don't even have to pay...
Just have enough clout...
jrg
jrg
Well, what I meant with "enough money" was that it was a large enough contract
Well, I think a lot of countries are choosing to go with linuces for that reason. India did, did the German school system? I mean in a LOT of cases linux makes sense for that reason.
;)
jrg
jrg
because that's how M$ makes their money. OEM, office, consulting.
cloud probably is 4th, and i am ignoring xbox.
21:28
I was asked once to come and work for M$
Yeah, Xbox makes them a ton of money.
I stupidly refused...
jrg
jrg
@Fabby a friend of mine is a consultant there
I already had shares in the small software company I worked for... >:)
jrg
jrg
he says it's the best job he's ever had.
21:29
I once met Bill Gates...
I live not too far from Redmond, myself :P
Uh-huh... sure...
He actually came into our offices...
We were one of 4 companies outside of the US doing Microsoft mail...
Was he demo-ing USB capabilities with scanners in Windows ME?
2
jrg
jrg
21:30
and he's done a little bit of everything, from startups to fortune 100 to defense contractors. says that MS is the best stuff he's ever done.
and he wanted to talk to "these people" before launching MsMail 3.0
@jrg I know a few people who got a burn-out there...
(they also retured quite rich)
I mean: rich enough to retire in their 30s
I'm not 30 yet, so there's still hope.
Not to for their children never to have to work... But still.
Well... I always planned to retire when I was 55...
Yeah, that whole "microsoft employs more millionaire secretaries" thing
I can't see it happen yet...

Q: Error installing Ubuntu on VirtualBox

s g I'm trying to install many different versions of Ubuntu (12.04/14.04, amd64/x86, server/desktop, etc.) on VirtualBox 14.3.26 on OSX 10.10 and I'm getting the following error: [ 0.000000] Fast TSC calibration failed.] It's the first and only thing to show on the screen before the VM turns off a...

@hbdgaf I don't know about $-millionaires...
@hbdgaf To your Linux in German schools thing: We still have XP. (coughing heavily)
But enough to live on for the rest of your life...
I'm back btw...
Really? I must have my euro-countries mixed up
21:33
@ByteCommander You're JOKING!
@hbdgaf I know in France FLOSS is big!
I had IT classes last year. back then it was still XP.
@jrg: so I may have to take back everything I said about self-signed certificates the other day. Digital Ocean's private networking isn't isolated from other machines on the network, so in theory other machines could read some of the data in transit, requiring data to be encrypted. Guess what the CoreOS people recommend... :)
But we have a few laptops with Win7 on them...
21:34
Linux adopters are organizations and individuals who have moved from other operating systems to Linux. == Government == As local governments come under pressure from institutions such as the World Trade Organization and the International Intellectual Property Alliance, some have turned to Linux and other Free Software as an affordable, legal alternative to both pirated software and expensive proprietary computer products from Microsoft, Apple and other commercial companies. The spread of Linux affords some leverage for these countries when companies from the developed world bid for govern...
So, I was misinformed. Not ALL, but a whole lot.
@hbdgaf CERN runs CrayLinux...
The most advanced HW in the world runs the most advanced OS in the world...
3
(and Ubuntu!!!)
All CERN's Distributed Computing runs on Ubuntu VMs...
(and a lot of the lab stuff too!)
just not the Cray...
Why do you know? Don't tell me you were there too...
:D Actually,
I wonder if that guy that did the rpi beowulf cluster posted the schematic for his custom power rail boards.
@ByteCommander I was... :P
21:37
>.<
@ByteCommander I've got the t-shirt to prove it!
I could post a picture...
Lemme look...
We planned to visit it with our Physics class, but they let forgot it or were too lazy or whatever... :P
jrg
jrg
@NathanOsman self-signed certificates!
Is it worth it? Maybe I can still shake the guy awake who proposed it...
21:40
@ByteCommander That would be an advantage to growing up somewhere larger. We did week long class trips to DC to see museums and such... and then I get back to the boonies and can't believe there are people in their 50s that haven't been to the Smithsonian. So, yes - completely understand....
@ByteCommander Yes and no...
Yes, if you get a chance...
No if most of your class isn't interested...
Just go with Mum and dad and get in yourself...
I just got in...
Well, the class is mostly interested, as the teacher is, but nobody is really wnating to organize it... And it's expensive.
It's free!
Just a bus...
Bus for 40 people...
Yeah?
Cost = 1/40 of a bus!
21:43
transportation, possibly lodging, non-cafeteria food, lots of hidden costs there.
Get in in the evening,
sleep on the bus
take the tour,
get in the bus
get back home in the morning!
sleep on the bus
2 nights, 1 day!
I don't know. I'm terribly bad in organizing things...
It's not like you have to fly in!!!
Organize it!
Do it!
I just heard what others discussed.
It'll help you get better at organizing if you take something way over your head!
21:44
And the formalities with school insurance, etc
That's the principle's problem!
^^ and that, but it's just a waiver here.
Not in EU...
You have to get special insurance by law...
(but as everyone is getting special insurance by law, it's cheap!)
Hmm, I will talk to the guy who proposed it. Maybe he's still interested. If not, he can at least tell me how far he got.
I am glad to see transcripts from Google Voice is on its A game...
21:46
Ahhh. Well schools have to be insured here - but if there's an outside activity - the parent can waive the liability or if someone refuses to waive the school's liability they have to be allowed to still show up to school and be put in a room with a TA or whatever.
@ByteCommander Talk to the guy and then start organising...
Maybe... ;)
call 3 bus companies and ask for their rates and sleeping system...
Call CERN and ask to speak to someone from PR that speaks German...µ
I'll write him a mail tomorrow.
Go see the guy.
In person!
It's pretty easy to organise...
21:48
?! Travelling to Swiss for nothing?
Nothing says I don't really care like an email. Eye contact and a handshake can go a long way...
But then, I've organised deployments of software in 50+ countries and 170+ sites...
@ByteCommander Ah! :D
I thought it was someone from your school who started doing stuff already!
@hbdgaf Sounds weird to us...
@ByteCommander Call then...
totally normal in the US.
Maybe... ;)
I am not sure.
@ByteCommander But insurance is so expensive there!
21:51
Should I update using the GUI or should I be an elitist and use the CLI...
This is a great responsibility.
I usually prefer to stay in the background.
@TheX Use whatever tool is best for the job...
@Fabby I think they both function equally well...
@ByteCommander You can use me as a sounding board...
@ByteCommander Start by drawing up a plan and send it to me...
I'll verify!
@TheX So why ask? (Or didn't I get your Q?)
@Fabby Don't understand what you mean...?
21:54
@ByteCommander Make a plan to make it happen.
Send the plan to me
I'll correct it.
You'll learn and no one (in your school) will ever know that someone helped you!
It's easy:
Okay, I will think about it.
1/ Call 3 bus companies and ask for rates
2/ Call CERN PR dept
3/ fix a date in summer holiday
But first of all I will talk to the guy who proposed it and my teacher.
Nah!
21:56
Give your teacher the plan...
@RPiAwesomeness That's the best one by now!
@Fabby just wanted to know everyone opinion, @RPiAwesomeness are you a living billboard for Raspberry Pi?
@RPiAwesomeness Good. Less pixels between | and .
(and then it will be perfect)
When you don't know what this is about (and you've seen it way too many times)
it reads like Pi 21
What if you make the RPI logo bigger, so he's actually pointing at it... and adjust the text size accordingly.
not Pi 2!
21:58
I have to discuss with them first because I don't know how far they already planned anything and if they're still on it or if they stopped and for what reason. Could also have been that the principal denied it... I have no idea. I missed a long time this year.
Sometimes you just have to jump on the tiger...
(but then, that's me!)
Oh. and it's about 5:30h to drive one way.
Car or bus?
Buses do 90Km/h on average...
@Fabby You're a tiger?? I thought you were a Vorlon... Can they morph their shape?
Google maps.
"to ride a tiger" = to do something dangerous...
But sometimes you only have a choice between being eaten by the tiger or ride it!
22:01
and the sister expression "you can't ride the tiger forever"
:D
meaning and when you make a small mistake - it eats you
@Fabby And after that you told "but then, that's me" - So you're the tiger. Or not?
no...
I like riding tigers... >:)
Then I did not understand... Can happen.
22:02
I like riding tigers = that's me...
You can fool some of the people most of the time...
You can fool most of the people some of the time...
but you can fool enough people enough of the time to make it worth your while...
>:)
@TheX Making a thumbnail for my vid.
@ByteCommander That's car... Buses are slower...
Well, this tiger is in someone else's cage at the moment. I have to ask before it will be free and ready to jump.
:D
Good man!
Do it!
Ask!
Okay okay. Tomorrow!
22:05
(and don't be put off if they couldn't make it happen)
You will be able! ;-)
(with a little bit of help)
(I know I am procrastinating...)
;-)
Good night all!
Watch a movie and sleep!
@RPiAwesomeness OHH!
@TheX lol, yeah :)
@Fabby You leave? What about pi-orbitals?
22:08
What??? Now???
I thought you had 2-3 weeks???
We can do it tomorrow, sure.
I just thought we could have started earlier... Then we might have finished now.
But the time flew by...
I will need my rest soon too.
I always heard that one differently.
You can fool all of the people some of the time or some of the people all of the time but never all of the people all of the time.
@hbdgaf You doubled the first phrase.
@hbdgaf That's the generally accepted one...
The other one is mine...
But just one question: How deep is your knowledge about those pi orbitals?
22:13
I told you before: It's been 30! years since I've done any of that stuff...
So in a general sense: yes...
With electron configuration in orbitals and quantum physics stuff? Or just the more basic things
I don't know how much I'll remember
Former...
I know how pigments work...
and how to design colours...
Okay. We'll see tomorrow then. I'll warm up a room when I log in...
I just don't remember how much I remember...
What time? Because I've got stuff to do too...
@Fabby ;) ^ Could also be a quote of Aristotle...
22:16
:P :D
What time?
When do you have time? I have holidays.
Not morning...
So except the early morning (sleep is important) I am free.
Not early afternoon...
19:00?
A bit late, but okay. I'll be around longer and we'll find each other.
I will prepare my questions for you until then.
22:18
Tomorrow is a really busy day for me...
@RPiAwesomeness nice one
Look, you've got my skype.
If it's urgent, skype me...
Oh. Really? I thought you're still searching for a job.
If I'm not responding on skype: call me.
@Mateo Yeah. I think I'm just gonna tweak that one a bit and go with it.
22:19
I don't have skype.
Yes I am, biut there's other stuff too...
I wish I had a skype friend...
But nobody loves me...
The job hunt is the reason not in the morning...
SMS me.
And there is no need to call... It's not urgent. And I can do the parts of the stuff I understand without you.
Hold on!
It's after midnight!
Looking at the wrong day!
22:20
Not even my wife will add me...
13:00???
Which honestly I can't blame her for that...
Just come when you have time and I'll either be there or not. I think I'm on after noon too.
@TheX Does she have Skype???
Honestly I don't even know lol
22:21
Ping me!
You're still in CET? (UTC+1)
Yup. Same TZ as you!
Fabby?
Okay.
I was adding an alarm to my agenda...
For you! :P
Good. Then see you tomorrow. :)
22:22
Ciao!
Good night all!
Closing down...
3... 2... 1...
Sleep well and dream of unicorns... ;)
I feel this one is ... a bit too crowded:
Maybe if you switched which leaf he's holding and a tiny bit smaller so he's still pointing at it, but you have more whitespace and you're not violating that rule of thirds thing.
22:32
@hbdgaf Oh, good idea.
I really think I'm just gonna drop that top text. Doesn't really fit in and makes everything too complicated
Yeah. I think that one would work without the top text and the It's the text at the top and the rpi red text moved up and to the left to balance out the space instead of centering it on the logo.
What font are you using for the script/written text?
22:48
Might move that top text a little to the left to align the left hand side of the two text blocks
@RPiAwesomeness - don't know if you'll like it, but I think that's pretty neat. Maybe crop off some of the bottom whitespace too
o/ @chaskes
It seems like update-notifier-common package is broken. How can I fix it? Reinstall doesn't work...
thought you were headed to bed?
I thought so too... :P
oh no, that was fabby...
Actually I had the same plan.
But then I decided to check for updates once again before going to sleep - Bam!
You have an idea?
