12:49 AM
@Mateo I have to find a raspberry pi 2 first...

yeah...

is my cpu too hot?

@TheX what type of cpu?

1:04 AM
@TheX has it said ouch yet?

looks ok if it is a icore
oh, wait was looking at the graphics card...
@TheX the cpu is ice cold ;P
that is around 80F, and for a regular processor I would consider 120 upper limit of normal - 140 getting hot - 150 way too hot - icores run hotter for a normal

1:46 AM
When it hits 60° C, then you start to worry.
Your video card can probably go beyond 100° C.

Note to self: Do not cut self while shaving. It is uncomfortable.
@TheX No, you're fine. 27 C for a CPU is just dandy

2:14 AM
If it is colder in my pc then the ambient temperature could condensation form in my pc?

I kind of doubt the surface is that cold. Just the area where the thermometer is.
But I honestly have no idea.

Hello from Arch!
Finally got it (kinda) working!

Wow. Two thumbs up.
I've installed Arch. It's an impressive accomplishment.

@NathanOsman lol and here I thought I'd get it done in a couple of hours.

The trickiest part for me was getting the network up and running.

2:24 AM
Installation was easy but I didn't reckon on how hard getting the gui running would be D:

I didn't realize that the DHCP daemon wasn't auto-starting.

really?
So far I've had no networking issues.

@Seth Oh I didn't even try to get any kind of GUI running :P

Although I haven't configured network manager.
I'm just running on wifi-menu.
@NathanOsman lol

Ah, I was just using a bridged adapter in VirtualBox.

2:25 AM
If you have a decent graphics card it isn't hard. I'll leave you to guess how decent my graphics card is :P
@NathanOsman ahhh, yeah.

I'm going to guess it isn't an Intel card.

I tried in VB before too and could never get the network up.

It's possible - just difficult.

So I just wiped windows 10 and went for it.

And the instructions don't mention anything about DHCP. I had to figure that one out myself.

2:26 AM
yeah, the instructions for installing in a virtual environment are lacking.

I should have wrote down what I did so that I can do it again later :P
Though I could probably remember most of it.
I'm physically exhausted, BTW. 1 hour of ball hockey, 1 hour of Frisbee, and 1 hour of soccer.

haha, I know that feeling. "What did I do to make that work again??"

I can hardly walk.

Wow. Can't say I quite know that feeling.. but I can imagine it!

Every single muscle is sore.

2:28 AM
ugh, what's up with my typing today?

@Seth Arch is really nice.

Hi @chaskes!
I guess I'm learning how nice it is right now, for better or worse ;)

@Seth Hey. How've ya been?

What do you like about it the most?
@chaskes Well.. I'm going to have to say "just ok". But it's a decent ok :)

It's fairly well-built as far as performance goes.

2:36 AM
I like the high configurability, the minimal bloat-free footprint creating speed, and the awesome wiki
@Seth Well, as long as you're decent.
Plus the latest version of everything

Those are definitely awesome things about it :)

But...take the warnings about reading the news and being aware of potential conflicts before upgrading seriously. I've had an install blow up before.

@chaskes This is true.

I like some amount of pre-installed, knowing that certain things are good to go from install on ubuntu - there are is like literally 5 or 6 extra things to get going to work on Ubuntu

Most of the time it's no worse than waiting a few days for a package to catch up with the rest of the updates, similar to using sid,; but one I had it truly die.
@Mateo Good point. But it also helps you learn, especially when using DE's other than gnome or kde where all of the needed bits (like polkit, etc) may not have been wrapped up for you.

2:46 AM
sure, I've installed so many de's/wm's on my desktop that I ran into this bug: bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity-greeter/+bug/1068605 and that was on a 22in monitor, so it's fun to try different things out

Yeah, with a less-used DE/WM on Arch, you discover all of the things you've taken for granted in gnome, etc, like screen locking, authentication, and so on...
task bars, network manager...

yeah, and that you can have things running window decroations separate from the compositing

default applications, alternatives....
@Mateo Oh, yeah, there's the good side too for keeping things light.

I actually like that bit better, like in xubuntu easier to take one piece out of the equation and troubleshoot

Exactly. It's nice to have those easily separated.

2:55 AM
some thing strange going on with graphics? try diffrent compositor - instead of whops I'll try reseting all of unity's settings, then down to making a new user or then reinstalling ;P
so maybe since they are going back to qt stuff, they will go back to being more modular

well on the lighter bit, sometimes with arch you feel a little like "this is my linux installation. there are many like it, but this one is mine." just saying.

@hbdgaf Yep, that's the exact feeling. And that's why I'm also going to do a linux from scratch soon.

@chaskes I'ld stick with arch. LFS is more broken than you'ld think on closer to edge packages.

I like the "I know this" Jurassic Park feeling when I see unity ;)

@hbdgaf Yeah, but truth be told, lfs is just for learning really, not so much for daily use.

3:00 AM
Yeah, and people always seem to hate it when I tell them to use it that way.

@Mateo Although what nix looked like that then? :)

@Mateo The fact that people want unity makes my head hurt a little for that reason makes my head hurt a little..
I'm sure there's a "bro i don't even unix" meme in that scene somewhere :)

@chaskes haha, there was a stack post somewhere about that - I think they had a real 3d file manager like that

I think X was like 3-4 years old at the point. I'll tell you when I first switched to linux I was disappointed it didn't look like Jurassic park.

Q: Is the Unix operating system featured in Jurassic Park real?

Mathew FoscariniWhen the film Jurassic Park came out, and I saw that scene where Ariana Richards is sitting in front of the computer and says; This is a Unix system. I know this. It's the files for the whole park. It's like a phone book - -it tells you everything. I've always wondered. Is that silly 3D ...

meaning I was very naive.
@mateo Thx for the link. So more realistic than I knew, but so it was a high-end non-free system that the rest of us wouldn't have.

well it certainly didn't look like that out of the box. the fellow that introduced me to u/l was a bsd freak and stunned me running quake windowed but at higher fps than i could on similar hardware.

so the movie wan't realistic on that bit, but the idea that if you came up to any random computer to do a certain task, which one would be easy to use out of box, (doesn't count if you carry around a usb with a maintainer script for your choice)

3:20 AM
lol, someone recreated his desktop: jurassicsystems.com

His desktop was a regular SGI experiment IIRC
If I could break into my SGI octane, I could probably get it running ;p

ToroidalI see that on the main Meta site that the profile pages seem to have been upgraded with the look and the information they show and how they show it. I think that this is a much better look than on other SE sites, so when will AU upgrade? Or does it not work like that?

12:06 PM
o/ @Rinzwind - bit of weird going on with the meta questions today.

@hbdgaf dont care I beat the Blood Starved Beast moments ago. My day cant go wrong

we could just delete meta >:)

errr, i do tend to handle life problems that way... but QA problems? no.

we should ban @Fabby on Meta. He is far too confusing

Ah, there it is @hbdgaf. Funny I couldn't find it on their site earlier.

you were searching newegg not neweggbusiness

Ahhh
So how's shipping after they raised the price $10 already?

2:08 PM
shipping from newegg is typically low - and they have to make money somewhere. they just give it to you right in the price.

Hmm, 1.99. Not bad.

exactly so.

@CarlH The chat messages. When you type something, that's a "message".
You can press the Up key or click on the little arrow next to your avatar by your message for a short period and make changes
Like you did above, you messed up and sent just @mur.
You could have pressed Up or clicked the little arrow on the left of the message and edited, thus removing the extra message.

@NathanOsman Happy chocolate bunny day to you too! ;D

Am I the only one that finds it amusing that I keep making the mistake of running systemctl start service instead of systemctl service start on Arch?

7:51 PM
I'm used to doing: 'sudo service xyz start'.
...though I find 'start xyz' to be more natural.

@NathanOsman I was more referring to the fact that upstart uses start service vs systemd's service start.

Right.
I'm still used to init :P

lol :p

But I much prefer to use systemd.
I used it quite a bit last year when I was working with CoreOS.

The thing I don't like about systemd is that it tries to manage everything.
systemd gets a bug and bad things could happen..

7:58 PM
Yeah, it's very monolithic.
That is (I think) the biggest objection I hear about systemd.

8:16 PM
lol
I uninstalled wifi-menu because I thought it might be interfering with NetworkManager.
Rebooted. No go.
Finally think I figured it out. Go to install necessary package.
Oops.
ok, got networkmanager working.

Extra, extra, I'm currently switching from Unity to gnome3.
I get the feeling that it was not designed for laptops tho.

8:35 PM
@Rinzwind Too bad I can't up-vote that! ;-)

@blade19899 I extremely dislike GNOME3. It took over a bunch of my system defaults without asking (icons, fonts, Plymouth splash) and screwed up Unity a decent bit.
If that was all I had installed, perhaps I could like it. But it messed with Unity too much for my liking :P

@RPiAwesomeness Crap, i'l check unity later.

@blade19899 ;) Reboot and you'll see even more damage

@RPiAwesomeness AAAHHH, FFFFFU*CCCkk

@blade19899 What did you just see?

8:40 PM
Ow wel, i was planning to reinstall Ubuntu anyways.
@RPiAwesomeness Haven't rebooted yet.
I was tweaking gnome3 to my liking
LOTTA WORK

Well, you just swore, what were you swearing about?
I have discovered the Title clip thingy in Kdenlive and it is amazing. I wish I had known about this thing before I started on my Pi 2 video.

@RPiAwesomeness you said
> ;) Reboot and you'll see even more damage

@blade19899 Ah ;)
@NathanOsman Can also attest to this

Unity is to sluggish. Gnome3 is a mess.
What interface has the best of unity and gnome?

Yup! The only real solution is to use i3-wm! :D

8:43 PM
Gnome 3 is a mess. I agree with you on that one.
Unity isn't so bad.

I quite like Unity and it's not really that sluggish. Except in the Dash when you search.

@NathanOsman Yeah, bet gnome3 feels snappier then unity.

They really need to work on speeding up the dash search :P

@RPiAwesomeness Thats the sluggish part
@RPiAwesomeness THEY SHOULD!

@blade19899 Yup.

8:44 PM
@blade19899 Perhaps but hey - it works.

@NathanOsman We'll backup, reinstall and tweak...

@blade19899 Yeah. @NathanOsman's twitter post:
I tried #GnomeShell for half an hour. I want that half hour of my life back.

I found it minorly funny and mostly true.

I never used twitter, and won't start now.

8:46 PM
@NathanOsman You look very similar to one of my friends IRL.

Really?

Somewhat.
Similar smile being the biggest one
Does Snappy Core have a logo?

I might try KDE.

How to install the KDE shell under Ubuntu?

8:48 PM
@blade19899 I want to try KDE 5 - it looks really good
Much better than 4 did

@RPiAwesomeness How do I install KDE5?

@blade19899 I don't actually know :P

@RPiAwesomeness So I installed Arch on my spare partition (as you know) and YouTube works in FF 37 just fine.
I didn't install anything flash related that I know of.

@Seth Awesome :D You might just have a video to watch in it fairly soon too!

Cool!

8:53 PM
Yeah. Seriously, I'm so tired of editing this video :P
It just got a lot easier though, figured out how to use the title clip thingy in Kdenlive and it is amazing.
So much easier than doing stuff in GIMP and then importing, then resizing, then positioning, then animating the way I had been :P
lol. I was looking for the Android logo and came across this:

:D

that is awesome.

It is :)
I just sent it to my uber-pro-Apple friend. If you don't hear from me again, you know what happened.
@Mateo Didn't you post a link to an Ubuntu version for Raspberry Pi 2?
Ah. Nvr mind. Found it.

@RPiAwesomeness You have more persistence than I do ;)
And patience for that matter.

lol
It's friendly banter usually. I know there's almost no way he's gonna change and he knows that I don't mind Apple, other than the price.

9:10 PM
@RPiAwesomeness use the Ubuntu mate one, after enabling compositing it was nice

@Mateo I'm planning on doing so.
Next video though

And that one was from the Ubuntu mate people, so a lot better than the random community images

;)
Oh, sweet! All the better!

anyone else get the irony with "sweet" and raspberry pi or am I just being weird?

9:14 PM
Mine is arriving Tuesday.

I have to download all of Qt 4 and for some reason pacman is only getting a 60K/s connection D:
This will be painful.

@Seth Hey! Now you know how I feel every single day :D

@RPiAwesomeness huh, that is always instant for me, finishes before I get a complete word, most of the time all I need is one or two letters to get what I want.

@Mateo Well, it's slow on my craptop
Desktop it's, like you said, almost instantaneous
Well, for applications. Files take a while longer

@RPiAwesomeness >.<

9:21 PM
@Seth Indeed

huh. You'd think a package manager could download archives without having to lock up the rest of package management things.

I love having 1.24 TB of space :D

yay
my connection jumped to 400K/s.

>.< Now I feel sad for me, but yay for you :)

I won't make you sadder by saying what it should be at.. Good luck getting better internet :)
Woot! We're done.

9:28 PM
Yeah. I'll be getting at least 1 Mb/s, if not 2-3.
I wonder if Mojang will ever release an update for MC:Pi....

Just got bit by another Python 2 => 3 migration bug :(

They changed the OrderedDict class.

@RPiAwesomeness the main guy left, and Microsoft bought them, and your asking if they will update it for pi?

um, fuse segfaulted... need more data.

FUSE is "Filesystem in USErspace", so did you try to mount something?

reading the question, it's a panic when you have a corrupted partition of some kind the kernel is trying to mount something.

@NathanOsman No idea, sorry. It's for an answer. Somebody else has the problem. He/She did an apt-get autoremove which deleted an old kernel version and got this some time later.

@ByteCommander Asterix & Obelix :D

11:18 PM
I think you mean sk in both places instead of x

@hbdgaf Eh, no...
Asterix or The Adventures of Asterix (French: Astérix or Astérix le Gaulois, IPA: [asteʁiks lə ɡolwa]) is a series of French comics. The series first appeared in the Franco-Belgian comics magazine Pilote on 29 October 1959. It was written by René Goscinny and illustrated by Albert Uderzo until the death of Goscinny in 1977. Uderzo then took over the writing until 2009, when he sold the rights to publishing company Hachette. As of 2013, 35 volumes have been released. The series follows the exploits of a village of indomitable Gauls as they resist Roman occupation. They do so by means of a magic...
O.O They're releasing a new one in October O.O

No, but that would be cool.

@TheX Don't you mean Roast Boar?

@ByteCommander >.< the kitten spam is back

;) Just one image copied from good old LolCats...
I won't post more of them.

Fair enough

11:28 PM
Or maybe I will...?
@hbdgaf So can I tell the owner of the kernel segfault question anything?

Nothing I'm aware of out of the box... other than it's fuse, so it's a filesystem problem.
@ByteCommander So, next on my list of foods to play with... two slices of butterbread - buttered with a slice of cheese each as if you were making a grilled cheese. Three strips of thick cut bacon cut in half and woven together like you're making a basket (that whole over under thing) so they cook in to a square disc.
When the bacon disc is cooked, but still limp, throw a scrambled raw egg on it, so the bacon and egg are incorporated in to the same patty sort of thing. When it's done, it's all one piece - so you can make it in batches to freeze. The bacon egg patty on the grilled cheese (now it has cheese on both sides). Seems like a bacon egg and cheese sandwich done right.

Turns out, you don't need the butter, you can brown the toast in the bacon fat and it takes two eggs to get the desired patty.
^^ that's bacon

@hbdgaf Bro. That sounds awesome :D

Oh, it's delicious. I tried it.

Now I'm HUNGRY! And it's 01:35 AM here... Awww >.<

"quoif"? My dictionary refuses its job on that word...

stem, stop, reduce
i probably misspelled it, but nothing like it is in my dictionary either.

@hbdgaf Do you mean quench?

sorry quaff as in quaff your thirst

Quash?

Quizzle?
No, I think the word @hbdgaf is looking for is Qwuaf

Unfortunately your waffles did not make it through the LAN cable... They probably got stuck at my ISP's. I am still hungry for Bacon

@RPiAwesomeness now you are just making things up ;p

@Mateo Indeed :)

or he's doing a snoop dog impression. take a quizzle for shizzle my nizzle.

"to quaff" is just used for drinking, I think...

yes, but it sort of fits. bacon is a bit addictive.

;) It is! I have it ways too seldom...

i'm single and bought the family pack... so i'm set for a while.

<-- Going to the fridge now hoping nobody will wake up...

i really need to get a set of earbleeding headphones so i can not disturb the neighbors with my speakers.

@hbdgaf If you're looking for not terribly expensive, but still very good closed-back ones, look at the Audio Technica M40X or M50Xs.
Or, if you want open-backed and fairly cheap, Superlux HD668B

ok now I'm hungry.

11:47 PM
my bad my bad.... the recipe has everyone hungry. it is awesome though... i know that doesn't help at all

@hbdgaf You are the hunger inducer.
Yeah. Anyone who ever makes videos using Kdenlive and needs captions/titles: USE THE TITLE CLIPS FEATURE. IT'S SOOOOO much better than designing in a another application and then import, resizing, and positioning the image in kdenlive.

i'm working on a menu for a food truck.
no seriously... i am.

@hbdgaf I just found a banana and a boiled egg that took me over 5 minutes to peel... Not comparable to bacon though. :-(

I am continuing the Freeciv game I was playing with my brother. We've now both got nuclear weapons.

5 minutes to peel an egg? you're obviously doing it wrong.

11:58 PM
Is it true that boiled eggs are easier to peel if they were older the time they get boiled? - If yes, the hen that produced this egg has had fever...

parboiled then cold shocked then reboiled seems to be the way for an easily peeled egg
