hi @DougSmythies I like your user picture
01:07
Does anyone know why my wacom tablet is recognizing the pen ~3-4 inches off the pad? It's kinda annoying...
And, does anyone know how to fix it.
Sounds like it's infrared?
@chaskes That's the thing, it's a contact tablet and it's definitely not supposed to do that
Ok, that's all I had.
Thanks for trying :)
01:44
@RPiAwesomeness oh, my wacom did that when the pen pressure tip was broke :( had to buy an new pen
@Mateo Nooooo. That had better not be it...I already had to return the first one I got 'cause the reciever was broken
does yours also have a eraser?
two ends on the pen?
Plus, it's not actually drawing, it's just moving the pen on the screen.
@Mateo Um..it's got one nib
And the pen has a button on it that I'm not sure what it does.
usually for shortcuts
@Mateo Yeah, probably
01:48
if it is a toggle up/down you can assign it to make the brush smaller/bigger
or if just one button, map it to undo
@Mateo I guess? I can't make sense of the Wacom settings within system settings...
@RPiAwesomeness huh, sounds bad. you should be able to move it slightly off the surface, but then draw by pressure
send a picture of your settings
@Mateo @Mateo Yeah. I don't know why it's doing this. It's usable, but because of the way it does this hovery stuff, it makes it really hard to actually use.
Because I'll be doing something in the air, then go to tap, and it screws everything up :P
is it clicking without touching the pad?
@Mateo No
So I don't think it's the nib
01:55
oh, then I think you are ok
The detection thing is just hyper sensitive
did you try mouse mode?
@Mateo Trackpad mode?
And yes, I did
Oh well. I'll look into it more tomorrow. G'night folks. Dang 9PM computer curfew
later
02:31
NSIS isn't working very well...
File: "C:/Users/Nathan/Documents/repositories/nitroshare/src/data/header.bmp" -> no files found.
...even though the file does indeed exist.
Wut.
> "There is a "bug" in the NSIS installer that refuses to extract the file name properly when there are only "/" forward slashes in the file name..."
Lame. That is incredibly lame.
And double escaping slashes is not cool.
@NathanOsman Double slashes for anything is lame
@Mateo Thanks for the comment. I didn't see it earlier, still finding my way around.
02:46
sure. always nice to see new people around.
I've been on forums for a few years, but people kept saying try askubuntu.
yep, it's a bit different, but I like the focus on question/answers
that and the chat is fun :)
Agreed. I am struggling to get to 50 points thou, so I can comment.
Find a decent question you know the answer to
I have, or so I think, but don't get anything out of the answers.
it'll come.
02:51
you can also suggest edits, make sure you find a few things to edit in another a post - say spelling + capitalization + a bit of formatting what is code, paragraph spacing. then you can get rep for doing some of that.
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll try it.

Q: How to remove disk lock

Bani RabbaniI have installed ubuntu 14:04 version, I already write the password on the disk. turns out it was too long for me, I want to disable it, how? I am a beginner, need an answer

does he mean pwd?
03:43
anyone know where I can get some definitive research / benchmark evidence as to the resource performance of various different desktop environments?
I have some old hardware and have been going crazy installing various DEs with no luck
everything is laggy
I think Phoronix makes a benchmark tool.
I specially am interested in Elementary freya / Unity / gnome-shell / cinnamon 17.1 (with compiz) / the new plasma with kwin
@NathanOsman
@NathanOsman, but then I'd have to install each one and benchmark them right?
not to sound lazy but
Probably.
I was hoping someone has already done this
plus I am lazy

sensors -A | awk {'print $3'} | sed 's/+\|°C//g'
prints the percore temprature of each core. Can anyone think up a simple way to produce one line of output, posibly in csv type fromat?

1 hour later…
05:43
@JoshuaRobison are you asking the memory usage benchmark?
This one is usually close
KDE is most memory intense, with TinyWM, and some other lesser known at top (bottom on usage)
Unity is a little more than GNOME, and Cinnamon is much less
This was pre-plasma I believe though
Much more recent flexion.org/posts/…
JWM... shivers...
Is it Jim's or who was it?
The link has better results, but not as visually appealing
and a year newer
@NathanOsman do you use a different desktop manager
06:01
I use Unity.
Though I've used both Gnome 3 and KDE in the past.
Were you the one who wrote lenses?
I don't think I wrote any lenses.
I use Cinnamon
hehe at " i dont think"
@Virusboy on mint?
no Trusty
06:04
E17 (Enlightenment) is pretty lightweight.
I installed it on an old netbook and it made a huge difference.
Cinnamon is a LW option for DE in Ubuntu
I installed enlightenment over the top of ubuntu, it made it kinda slower.. but I had tweaked the heck out of my system
and I ended up pointing to wrong ppa
first experience with dependency hell
@Virusboy i thought it was supposed to be lightweight for Gnome3/2
oh not KDE :)
No, its considered a stand alone
I was reading that as KDE not DE
I love being able to press super button and find any program
so that's why I like gnome/unity
Like I do super then fire to open ff
or, super then libre to open librewriter
and i would rather not mess too much with other things
Cinnamon has the search feature in super, but it resembles a more 2000 look
06:11
Is it like Windows?
yes
its GUI very much resembles it
tomorrow ill ping you a SS
I am actually not a fan of Windows GUI anymore, but if I started with that I probably would like it
I hate icons on the desktop :)
I dont mind the Windows GUI, i just hate the Kernel(Or lack thereof)
It just feels watered down after messing with linux
esp. cmd
well just remember its standard in Mint
06:14
even powershell
In other news, Winblows has once again borked my synpatics install and can now no longer turn off my touchpad
Yeah Mint used to pretty much just be Ubuntu with a diff desktop, but has grown even since I have messed with linux
Like it borked synaptics in windas?
yea
it works but past getting it reintergrated with winblows is no longer a concern
Ah ok.
I need to sleep I am starting to doze
have a good night!
same
night

Apparently, Windows doesn't like the BMPs that Gimp exports.
I built an NSIS installer and it wouldn't display the bitmaps at all. Resaved them in paint and they display without issue :P
@Fabby: just FYI, I took the time to build an MSI installer as well as an EXE installer for both x86 and x64. So you have four installers to choose from :P
06:44
^--- Windows installer
@Mateo: they've now bumped CMake 3.2 to Feb. 10 (next Tuesday).
07:03
@NathanOsman and such are the problems of building to spec...
@RPiAwesomeness: no I've never heard about Amway until you told me... Why?
@NathanOsman (y)
07:19
@RPiAwesomeness I feel your pain.

Q: New type of flag - feature request

ToroidalI think that a really useful flag would be one that you can use to flag "Questions" with that actually within them contain questions nothing to do with each other, so in fact questions that should be asked separately. So that you can for example flag a question which reads something like (and le...

@Takkat i see my name used idle!
I had two pings, but was busy on another viewport...
@Rinzwind to make people klick on that link I posted to then upvote you :)

@Fabby: Oh yes... I asked some questions which I thought that you would be able to answer, so I pinged you. But then someone else quickly answered my question, and so as not to bother you I thought I would remove the messages where I pinged you! :D But I guess it didn't work out exactly as I thought it would... :D
The pings stay, but the message was indeed removed, so I had no clue what you were talking about.

But, the site which they are referring to is on several blacklists for being malicious, phishing and it is also on a Spamhaus blacklist.
user136984
@Fabby: Do you know if this link is anything to worry about? Or if it it just a normal URL shortener which happens for some reason to have not such a good reputation?
user136984
Because I have seen many other trusted URL shorteners on major blacklists.
Looking
looks like MadMike is on it already.
user136984
15:34
Right... Seems to be fine now. It just worried me when I saw it on many major blacklists for being malicious, and the origin of spamming. Also the fact that it is here in the PhishTank database for being a phish worried me.
user136984
But I suppose that that will happen to any URL shortener which is used for those sorts of things. Actually it is a rather good and sneaky way of doing it, so that your spammy/malicious site does not get blacklisted, but instead the URL shortener does.

@Toroidal that would be spam
Hey people...
hi
@Whaaaaaat What pain? :D I've got plenty of things causing me pain, digitally anyways :P
@fossfreedom hopefully they ship over here, as I totally use wifi all the time and don't really use a "phone" to talk on...
@Fabby Yeah. So, I went on a tour of their world headquarters (~20 min from my house) for school and they had a computer set up where you could get your face scanned and then they would recommend which of their beauty products would help you the most.
Me, being bored out of my skull, was just derping around.
16:56
@RPiAwesomeness Be happy to just be a bit bored...
I decided to hit Ctrl+Alt+Del, just to see if it did anything (I know, I know, for shame) and it brought up the task manager...
hm, brings up lock screen on unity for me
I'm bored and ill... brother infected me with a cold... :(
@RPiAwesomeness: :D Now I'm absolutely sure you're a girl! :P ;-) >:)
I used to map it to the task manager on my old computer
16:57
and I was able to interact with Windows (it was running Windows XP). So, being the hax0r I am, I hit Win+R...
@RPiAwesomeness I get the logout screen with Ctrl-Alt-Del
@ByteCommander The computer was running Windows XP
It's not mine
@ByteCommander they usually lock that one down if they are "smart"
@ByteCommander: I have a good recipe against cold:
Oh, you're on Win? Shame on you!! ;D
16:57
1/3 hot lemon juice
strawberries
1/6 th honey
Anyways. It brought up the Windows run dialog, and I was able to launch a command prompt.
1/6h orange juice
1/3rd whiskey!
I didn't have time to do anything really l33t, so I just ran echo You have been Hax0rd
and left.
@Fabby Wait...why am I a girl??!??
16:59
Oops, have to go... Sorry - Bye!
Yeah. I was bored and "hax0rd" and international company in their own headquarters. Nothing major.
"you could get your face scanned and then they would recommend which of their beauty products would help you the most"
@Fabby Like I said. I was bored out of my skull.
