^--- grass in Blender
nice
@NathanOsman you use a particle system for that?
@hbdgaf You'd think :)
@hbdgaf Yes.
...and a tutorial. No way I would have concocted something that good on my own.
(And it isn't even that good.)
It needs more specular highlights.
blendercookie has a good one on using particle systems for hair. i would imagine it could apply to grass too.
that said, i'll take gameplay over fancy foilage any day. one makes me happy. the other makes the developer nut show last longer.
00:16
I'm using this.
@hbdgaf Don't worry, it's not for a game :P
And I agree. Some of the most fun games had the lamest graphics.
Though there is something to be said about graphics.
Blender is, and always will be, way over my head.
Same here... I just play with it for fun.
I never was much of an artist though.
...though I have used it for a logo now and then.
@hbdgaf: Naw, its a lactic acid pickle
@NathanOsman Real grass typically isn't that... perfect
You'd have a mix
00:20
I'm doing my best to get it more random.
@NathanOsman nice, did you do multiple patterns from different angles, it looks really good
Nope, just three unique blades spread out over the surface with random size variations.
cool
00:42
Rerendering now... should look a bit better.

Q: Windows installation cd and usb boots to gnu grub 2.02

Redstarti have read via a website how to install ubuntu alongside windows 8 uefi and i actualy managed to install however I did not had an option to install alongside so i replaced windows with ubuntu have checked bios and i have setted it correctly other computers it works fine And yes i have removed...

@Seth Huh, well, I'm apparently very random
^--- maybe a bit better?
Still not random enough though...
Bother graphics card drivers and all that :P
To accept, or not to accept...that is the question.
I mean, the edit does improve the answer...but is that an edit that should be made?
Seems a bit big
@NathanOsman maybe add in some of the thick blade variety and some that is curved, but I really can't see patterns in it so that is really good
00:57
I'm tweaking the blades a bit now.
Am I the only one who loads Tech Republic quite slow?
Hit 1K flagging. For all the trolls, I'm watching you! >:)
01:12
Needs more contrast.
gets better every time :)
So, I have a quick question, maybe one of you knows the answer. I have been completely and utterly stymied in my attempts to figure this out. In Python+Gtk how can I, instead of creating a new window, just reset everything in the existing window as if I had created a new window?
What do you mean by reset?
I have a feeling I am missing something very obvious here.. but I am having trouble putting it to words.
Tell us from user perspective?
01:22
@NathanOsman Like, just change all the widgets in the window to a different configuration.. Does that make sense?
Kind of like make them all disappear and be replaced with other widgets?
More or less, yes.
Then you probably want some kind of panel for each group of widgets.
Make all but the first panel invisible until you are ready to show it. Then make the first one invisible (hide it) and show the one you want displayed instead.
Alright.. Another friend told me something like this should work, but it doesn't. (It appears win is interpreted as a local variable and thus just creates a new window)
I'm obviously doing something seriously wrong but honestly I have no idea what I am doing right now :P
@Seth widgets within widgets?
01:27
Stick this in front of line 14:
global win
You are indeed correct, win is interpreted as a local variable unless instructed otherwise.
Same behaviour :/
(I actually tried that, albeit at the top of the file)
Let me take a closer look at the code then.
(The global thing was me just glancing at the code and seeing that it was missing.)
Sure, thanks. I feel pretty bad.. but I could not find an answer anywhere :/
I probably need a good book
You want the first window to disappear, right?
yup
or rather, everything in it to disappear and be replaced by another set of widgets.
01:32
Let me rework the example a bit then.
@Mateo_ I'm a bit confused by GTK terminology.. They seem to call windows widgets sometimes?
@Seth I'll make a really simple example that does what you need and then you can adapt it.
thanks
Meanwhile...
well, I call a widget a undecorated window... not sure what the official term is
01:33
I feel like a help vampire D:
I'm starving
I'm probably just making everything confusing more for you ;)
later guys
Better... worse...?
somewhat, I think you need a color randomizer on the lighter color blade, it sticks out
and all the ones of that color lean to the left
01:37
That blade is brighter because of its bend and the reflection off the sun.
oh, hm...
@Mateo_ Rather ;)
01:52
@Seth: there's this: paste.ubuntu.com/9637913
But it doesn't initially hide the second pane like I told it to. Once you click one of the buttons, it works.
I'm not sure if this is a GTK bug or something else I'm not aware of.
Oh... hang on.
I see what's happening here.
because of show all at the bottom?
Yup.
I didn't see that there :P
One sec. while I fix this up...
I was thinking if you made a bunch of stuff it might be easy to contain it in a widget, then just show/hide the widgets
@NathanOsman yours looks really simple though ;)
02:08
@Seth: here we go: paste.ubuntu.com/9637983
It works now.
Thank you @NathanOsman, that's helpful.
I guess the way I tried earlier just isn't possible?
Well, you were using two different windows before.
j0h
j0h
when I go to ssh into a remote shell, and launch the session via a panel applet, ssh opens XTerm. But i want it to open term, or mate-terminal, or gnome-terminal instead.
@j0h I replied to you when you asked earlier. Did you not see it?
j0h
j0h
I didnt see it
In fact, when i returned to my desktop, it looked as though I hadnt even posted
02:17
@NathanOsman ahh.. This way just seems a bit messier than using separate classes, although I can understand why that doesn't work.
You can still use two classes.
Let me adjust the sample a bit.
@j0h start reading here:

when I go to ssh into a remote shell, and launch the session via a panel applet, ssh opens XTerm. But i want it to open term, or mate-terminal, or gnome-terminal instead. I allways used to open up a regular terminal.. I really hate xterm, how can I configure panel applets to launch term by default? I saw this last year and solved it, but i cant find the thread.
(there were just a couple of messages)
j0h
j0h
@seth
I am using mate
@NathanOsman oh nice. Thanks.
j0h
j0h
mate 1.8
02:19
@j0h cool. Let me power up a VM and take it for a spin.
I'm not used to MATE, is a panel applet like a widget or is it just an icon on the panel?
j0h
j0h
the panel applet is for an ssh session.
so you said, but that doesn't really answer my question.
What is an "applet" in the MATE sense of the word?
j0h
j0h
a buton on the panel that can be used to execute code
like maybe a "launch terminal" button that is pre-built in?
j0h
j0h
like that, yes but customizable as well. the same meaning as used in gnome fallback mode, for panel applet
02:25
@Seth: here you go: paste.ubuntu.com/9638021
I've abstracted the box contents into a separate class.
In my example I use the same class for both boxes.
But you would probably want to create a separate class for each.
j0h
j0h
The window it brings up says "Launcher"
@j0h ok, that helps some. Getting the VM set up now.
this looks intresting

Q: Panel apps try to launch in xterm, even though it isn't installed

j0hI have some panel applications that launch terminals, but when I click on them, they say xterm failed. Well yeah, xterm isn't installed, nor do I want it. I want mate-terminal to come up instead. How do I configure that to happen? This is Ubuntu server 12.04 with a mate desktop. I have MATE Ter...

oh, you asked that ;)
@NathanOsman Ah, yes, that is helpful.
A little more complicated than I thought, but that's fine.
j0h
j0h
I see. But i couldnt find it: I guess I'll try it
Hey! that workd!
Thanks @Seth, @Mateo_ @j0h
02:31
Wait.. it works now @j0h?
j0h
j0h
yeah I installed gnome-terminal
lol
j0h
j0h
and now it works proper
ok, glad it works :)
j0h
j0h
Thank you, for the effort.
02:32
cool
guess that is some kind of fall-back...
Thanks a lot @NathanOsman!
03:04
No problem!
^--- and hordes of Android users were just logged out of their Twitter accounts thanks to a timestamp issue.
(Apparently 2015 comes early for some :P)
wow

What's worse - they can't log back in yet.
Luckily, I'm still logged in on my desktop.

I got a lighted keyboard (steelseries Apex 64145 ) for Christmas. Im going to ask them for linux support, though I assume they will decline. That said, is there an utilities that can help me program my programable keyboard, in linux?
Something like xbindkeys?
j0h
j0h
I'm hoping for something that can help me program the lighting
04:04
oh that's another matter altogether..
Now that's more like it.
nice!
04:56
Hey

06:00
Hey! stuff still works right after Kernel updates!
This is great!
06:12
Do anyone know how RAID works?
j0h
j0h
First you do something that allerts the FBI
Then, they come to your house and steal your PC
then you tell them that what they took was your toaster,
and aviod a lengthy jailtime.

Thats how RAIDs work
RAID (originally redundant array of inexpensive disks; now commonly redundant array of independent disks) is a data storage virtualization technology that combines multiple disk drive components into a logical unit for the purposes of data redundancy or performance improvement. Data is distributed across the drives in one of several ways, referred to as RAID levels, depending on the specific level of redundancy and performance required. The different schemes or architectures are named by the word RAID followed by a number (e.g. RAID 0, RAID 1). Each scheme provides a different balance between the...
I have like 30 40GB drives Im tempted to make a raid 0 and get that mad disk speed

Q: How to use an internal php.bin file?

blade19899I have an old server, which I got for free, and it's running a slightly outdated PHP version. I sometimes struggle to life with it, as I want to write new feature on to my personal website. With newer php function. Some of the features are not achievable with an older PHP version, so that's why I...

post on AU and I'll have a look >:-D
@Rinzwind Is it on-topic here?
no idea :D
Your comment is confusing @blade19899
@Virusboy my comment?
15:43
@Rinzwind ahah. don't even know if the server is running Ubuntu!
@blade19899 lol
@Virusboy Which one?
@Rinzwind No
@blade19899 I doubt what you want is possible :-P
in response to michaels comment on your Stack Overflow php
15:44
@Virusboy How so?
@Rinzwind It has to be possible! I don't wanna keep using old php code.
You said its not yours but the say you got it from an internship. Its most likely why no one has answered it
Whats the server package manager @blade19899
@Virusboy I got the domain, and i have access via ftp to the server.
@Virusboy Dunno :/ I never mucked around with it to much. Don't even know what Linux distro it is. :(
Do you have physical access?
@blade19899 more /etc/lsb* ;-)
I hope it shows dapper 6.06 :D
@Virusboy No. I can access via ftp, and upload files there via filezilla, but other than that, I got nothing. I'm a Junior Developer not a server guru :(
15:50
@blade19899 flamewar on hence the PHP? flamewar off
did you check the linux version yet? :D
@Rinzwind Bro, no idea what you're talking about.
@Rinzwind I'm at work.
some people here hate PHP and want it to burn :-)
you need to ssh into it
@Rinzwind Along with Java
@Rinzwind Ow yeah, i remember those people. Fun guys.
@blade19899 what you can not ftp to your system from work? :D I manage my home router + bittorrents from work :D
@blade19899 lol
I am in the camp "whatever language works for you use it" ;-)
15:52
Ubal
@Rinzwind Me two. If it works.
my boss once got angry when he asked "if we'd adopt a new language what would you prefer"
I told him "don't care. I'll learn it when you tell me the name" D:
I am a programmer that codes not a coder ;-)
yea imma coder
15:54
I am one of those people that picks up pen and paper and draws a picture before I start coding.
@Rinzwind So, your mentally insane.
though at school I used to make whole PSS and PSD but gave up on that. far too much work.
i still laugh at people who think writing xml in notepad is cool
@Virusboy my boss codes JS in notepad
wait wut
15:55
@Rinzwind @Virusboy , seriousness?
yeah and he's good at it :-D
he makes less mistakes than I do (I use aptana)
is he too lazy to write a complier?
I burned notepad ages ago. Mostly because there is no Notepad on Ubuntu
@Virusboy for what? we use mostly interpreted languages
@blade19899 yes there is :=) we call that gEdit
@Rinzwind Is aptana any good. I use sublime text 2, for everything i write.
15:56
N++ is the linux verison
@blade19899 yes aptana does all I need it to do (but I use it only for html and js)
I have been told for large projects you need an IDE.
oh your wiriting website code
@blade19899 it helps. BUT you need an IDE if more than 1 person codes on the same software
@Rinzwind i need one for my website(PHP, HTML5, CSS3, JS, Jquery.). And future projects with others
15:58
@Virusboy we have our own ERP software
@Rinzwind Yea imma Frontend dev. I use C# as a preference but can use others too.
And it's 5 o'clock. Everybody made a run towards home.
start operation snowstorm
(it is white outside ;-))
racist
@Virusboy Yeah thats a well know fact.
Bye!
