@Seth thanks for the quick feedback!
02:17
@Braiam Argh, that got closed?
@JorgeCastro Why U close dat!?!?
@Danatela No problem. We can't migrate things after a certain number of days. It's either 60 or 90.. can't quite remember.
60
<-- had already a flag declined cuz this
(on SO)
well, actually, mod was thinking I wanted to migrate, when I wanted to close it
ah okay.
60 it is then.
@Braiam I don't understand what you mean there.. It's still gnome-screensaver AFAICT.
gnome-screensaver-command -l still locks the screen.
@Seth the one that dimms the screen isn't the screensaver, tho
yeah it is.
If you remove gnome-screensaver it won't work anymore.
Or at least, that's how it was. I doubt it was changed, unless you have proof otherwise.
What's going on here?

Q: Heartbleed: dist-upgrade didn't fix it

pagliucaSorry for my bad English. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS (GNU/Linux 3.2.0-60-virtual x86_64). In an attempt to fix Heartbleed, I first ran apt-get update, then apt-get dist-upgrade. It went all OK, so I thought that that security issue was fixed. But openssl version -a outputs: OpenSSL 1.0.1...

How can he not be getting security updates if his sources.list has them?
@Seth no repro, the server didn't had the stuff
yet
02:26
are you sure?
was looking only at the hours
from the content of his question I can't infer how the issue got solved
if he at least had included apt-cache policy openssl, I could tell what went wrong
man, the only question that was interesting askubuntu.com/q/446228/169736
02:42
@Seth did I misclose something? link!

Q: Can I reuse other OS /home directory for Ubuntu?

zarkI currently have Mint 14 set up on a 128GB SSD, with my /home directory on a 1TB Hard Disk. I am thinking about installing Ubuntu 14.04 when it comes out. I understand that I can select a different home partition during installation and not format it. Will the home directory just work, consider...

(the link was in Braiam's message I had replied to just above yours ;)
It isn't so much that you misclosed it as much as I trust you ;)
Wanna make sure I didn't miss something.
Did I have a close vote on that?
@JorgeCastro Yeah, third vote.
My bad then! inspecting it now it looks fine to me
though, in general sharing /home directories can be bad
but probably not between mint and ubuntu
Know enough for an answer maybe?
@JorgeCastro All cool. Not like I haven't misclosed things ;)
Once I misdeleted something.
I was mainly making sure you didn't see something I missed.
02:45
I do tons of actions per day, I make a ton of mistakes, that's why 5 votes to close something is crucial
2
I can feel confident if I mess up someone will ensure it ends up okay!
2
Which is great :)
Like the SE folks say, these sites are about Community, and Community is great :D
@JorgeCastro only the dots files, and he's going to get rid of mint anyways
@Seth hmm this touches one of my other questions
how to translate xscreensaver-command -lock into gnome-screensaver-command -l and vice-versa
@Seth cough
@Braiam Hm? Once I misbanned someone in chat..

I'm sure :)
Anyway, I'm out.

can we please reopen this askubuntu.com/q/346864/169736
why doesn't the software senter support open source vpn software like tunnelblick?
tunnelblick should be added to the apt-get repository
@JohnMerlino are you spending time packaging tunnelblick for Ubuntu?
@Braiam umm well, I mean if I was part of the ubuntu core development team I would add it high in the queue, considering the popularity of vpn
@JohnMerlino well, you actually can be part of it wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/GettingStarted
Why isnt there an option in SE to change my profile pic. on all its sites if I just change it in one site? or is there?

My open ssl version says this "OpenSSL 1.0.1e 11 Feb 2013
built on: Mon Apr 7 20:33:19 UTC 2014" Does this mean it is safe?
@Qwertieϟ Yes it is.
@Qwertieϟ Possibly. Most likely.
You should be fine. The update has been in the archives since Monday.
I did see some SSL stuff in the software updater yesterday
@Qwertieϟ You would also need to generate new keys and revoke old certificates. See this answer from Gilles.
Five reasons that will kill you.
@Aditya I am not running any secure servers ATM but I herd clients are also at risk
@Qwertieϟ Gilles' answer talks about clients as well. Other than that, I don't have much experience about this stuff ;)
@Andrew That was the worst article I have ever read :)
06:45
@Qwertieϟ IT was the first time that I saw it, just right now.
I don't understand why so many people are upset of the EOL of XP, do you?
@Andrew Its a bit of a problem for things like ATMs that run XP. I think it would be hard to update all of them
@Qwertieϟ It is and was several years ago an outdated/obsolete OS.
@Qwertieϟ "But I love XP. It was the best Windows!" It usually goes something like that.
Everyone forgets how much people hated Windows XP when it first came out.
Yep, I was only 3ish
Lol... I was only eleven.
06:52
98 was my first windows
I don't remember but the first operation that I use was MS-DOS With 98 or 95.
Windows 9x series was a program on DOS. The series inculed Win. 95, 98, 98SE, ME
I only started using linux 6 months ago
I got a cheep PC for $30 and it was running vista. After 3 weeks I switched it to mint
Looking back 8 years ago. When the year was 2006. Doesn't seem like it. I remember when they killed 98, and I remember my dad getting the last of the updates for it
The first time that I did use Linux was in 2010 or 2009, on the desktop, of couse.
what does this mean
Warning: This image is oversized (which is a bug) and will not fit onto a standard 703MiB CD. However, you may still test it using a DVD, a USB drive, or a virtual machine.
found it on cdimage.ubuntu.com
how can size be a bug?
@Qwertieϟ The reason why Windows doesn't work right, it is base on DOS Technologies, and it was never design for more than a single user. Gnu/Linux is a clone of Unix, which was design for multi-user systems.
@PatilAditya Then they most of downside them, because I remember when 12.10 comes out, it was 8XX MB in size
Is the Logo of Windows still a flag?
07:03
BTW how uses cd nowadays? I haven't seen one for months. dvds are not very costly compared to a cd.
Same
I just use sd cards.
And a couple of flashdrive for school.
@Andrew I just use my nexus7 as a FTP server
that works too but there is a downloading time though the network, and not as fast as coping them.
@Andrew Its fine for things like docs
Yea, but I carried like 50-150 MB files sometimes
07:07
@Andrew For big files I usually use a portable HDD
@Qwertieϟ But flash is better than hard disk
@Andrew true, but i have had usbs fail
My favourite one a 64GB 3.0 usb failed last week
I use my home network for most file transfers.
Virus are fun, come out and play, you have been waiting for a while, since your gods don't want you to get patch. El, isn't it cute? That the Microsoft, is kina tring to control it, since they want people to still use it, but want to make money out of the anti-virus incs. The Virus only wants to help people to lose there money since they are still on XP, IE6 and they don't know any better. Yepee, phishing is fun, Do you want to go with me. Linux is only down the road.
Try it, you might like it, since we are untied by the freedom we hold and the kernel we use..

Goodnight all.
I'm tired.
How do you open xampp after installing it?
@Qwertieϟ why xampp in first place?
@Braiam So I can test my php files before uploading them
@Qwertieϟ how did you installed it?
the executable file from there website
It seems to be running but I cant get to the GUI
08:25
It would take a desktop PC about 316 octillion years to crack my password! http://hsim.pw/
@MinatoNamikaze Only if heartbleed does not get to it first
09:07
@MinatoNamikaze it would take me 1 hammer.
@Qwertieϟ still no reason to not use our native lamp setup ;-)
and you open it from localhost ( localhost/xampp )
09:19
@Rinzwind What if I forgot the password
@MinatoNamikaze A hammer can be very helpful in remembering :=)
it tends to bring out subconscious memories

@MinatoNamikaze Why crack password, when there are better ideas like peeping?

@AvinashRaj Sorry for the late reply, out with friends. I have no idea how i broke my packages. I was in my exam weak so i paid little attention to this. But, now i need to have this working again. I can't even install updates, cli, gui.

@blade19899 just hold the package apt by running apt-mark hold apt and then run sudo apt-get install -f

@PatilAditya Why you are willing to delete your account?
Many SE sites have been hijacked by muricans.AU is not yet, but will be hijacked by those people soon.

actual good question, seeing few of those around askubuntu.com/questions/446863/…

oli is catching up to fossy
Rinz is catching up Luis... ;)
Takkat is catching up Lekensteyn ..:-)

no way doing so... he'd be so much better if he was here more often
Give Rinz another 2 Rep points...
@Takkat i think you are the oldest AU user.
@AvinashRaj lol - not so sure about that... there are older people than me.
definitely.
plz mention some.
the hardware engineer

@Takkat no Luis and me have been switching places for 2 weeks now :=)
@jokerdino yeah - keepitsimple says he's 71.
13:29
@AvinashRaj I am 45 :-)
@Rinzwind no wonder with so little difference.
and I saw a post on AU about someone claiming he was 86 and needed guidance
so that could be a challenge.
@Takkat ha I am ahead again. Luis challenged me to a 1 year rep fight >:)
@Rinzwind lol
Older people are not so scared of TTY - they come from DOS.

Q: Hello i need some one who knows java / linux ubuntu programming

Luc4rioHello i need some one who knows java / Linux / Ubuntu programming i have some questions to ask him ? i need a tutorial on how to make a radio app witch uses online radios for streaming the music .

:P
who doesn't?
I think someone flagging the messages wrongly.
you know why I stopped reading the no sound questions? They are ever so often the result of some obscure tinkering with system files or other weird setups.
No chance to find out.
why my meta question was not appear yet?

@Takkat default answer: install pavucontrol >:)
@Rinzwind yeah --- but it will not help in cases where people already tried "everything" :)
@Takkat my opinion is they never installed pavucontrol though >:D
it's all GNOME's fault...
and their meaning of "everything" most times means "nothing" >:)
at least it always does mean "nothing helpful"

Q: Why people are willing to delete their accounts?

Avinash RajI saw many people on AU, dealt with the community members directly and made their account deleted. What would be the main reasons for deleting their accounts by own?

@Rinzwind another good link for so many sound issues: voices.canonical.com/david.henningsson/2012/07/13/…
and never forget the good old Fn+F8
<-- hates all function keys
we have a terminal app at work which is entirely operated by function keys. You need to learn their function by heart.
i want to know about heartbleed bug . So please give any link that explains the bug clearly and briefly.
We have to create a seperate room for heartbleed bug.

@AvinashRaj Have you read heartbleed.com ?
Who founded this bug?
@AvinashRaj Did that, no luck, same error.

Q: How to explain Heartbleed without technical terms?

NickMost of my friends who are not experienced in computers want to know what Heartbleed is and how it works. How would one explain Heartbleed to someone without a technical background?

@terdon thanks for the link both me and @AvinashRaj were searching for something like that...BTW you think a passwd change can save us?
from the bug
No
@Venki I am not a security expert by any stretch of the imagination. But in theory the danger is that an attacker might have gotten access to your passwords so changing them would be a good idea, yes
As long as the server in question has fixed it. If they haven't it makes no difference. Remember that the bug is server side.
What I was about to say ^^
14:26
@blade19899 could you clarify your question? What gives you the error about sublime? You start with that but then ignore it and talk about an error caused by the apt package.
But by all means change your passwords. It just won't do any good if people don't update their servers
The best description of the bug I've seen is the xkcd comic that Minato posted, it's on the starwall.
@terdon right..so you seem to suggest very similar to what is here cnet.com/news/how-to-protect-yourself-from-the-heartbleed-bug ?
@Venki Yes, I guess. But seriously, I know jack shit about security, I don't know any more than you do about this.
@blade19899 just remove the gpg keys
14:32
@terdon thnaks for the help..especially that link!! bye!!
btw, @blade19899, if you want the message to be in english use LANG=C command or sudo LANG=C command
@terdon I had exams these couple of weeks, so i paid no attention to the error i was getting. And i can't recall what i did to fudge it up this bad.
@Braiam, meaning i can just: sudo rm /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d//webupd8team-sublime-text-3.gpg?
@blade19899 OK, then remove that bit. It is just confusing, you have one error in the title and describe a completely different one in the question body.
@blade19899 I recommend removing the PPA in a swoop and add it again
^ HALP
@Braiam I don't think that's the issue, he gets "subprocess installed post-installation script returned error 2"
14:38
@terdon "E : Sub -process/usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)"
@Braiam ppa-purge-ing them as we speak
@terdon > Setting up apt
> gpg : key block sources
> dpkg : *error processing apt* (--configure)
We will see what happens..
remember that "post-installation script returned error" means that something went wrong with the configuration scripts of the installation of the package, in this case apt, which where caused by gpg keys
@blade19899 nah, just removing using `add-apt-repository -r ppa:/blabla
@Braiam He said three minutes after i started purging -_-
lol
14:53
Ok, got it fixed: sudo rm /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d//webupd8team-sublime-text-3.gpg
update; upgrade; dist-upgrade; clean; -f install;dpkg reconfigure -a; and am good to go again.
Now, food. Am hungry as hell.
Bye! 0/
@blade19899 if you try to install anything from that PPA it will fail miserably
@Braiam any idea how I can fix this?
dpkg: error processing bleachbit (--configure):
 package bleachbit is not ready for configuration
 cannot configure (current status `half-installed')
Errors were encountered while processing:
 bleachbit
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)
Tried: sudo dpkg-reconfigure --force bleachbit
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get -f install
I installed the damn thing a while ago to answer a question here and don't remember the details but intentionally broke it. Now I can't fix it and feel like a fool :(
@terdon sudo dpkg --configure -D 200 bleachbit
$ sudo dpkg --configure -D 200 bleachbit
dpkg: error processing bleachbit (--configure):
package bleachbit is not ready for configuration
cannot configure (current status `half-installed')
Errors were encountered while processing:
bleachbit
@terdon ls /var/lib/dpkg/info/*bleachbit*?
15:04
@Braiam Ah! Yes, I was just working my way to that, checking the postinst script now
@Braiam :
 $ ls /var/lib/dpkg/info/*bleachbit*
/var/lib/dpkg/info/bleachbit.list     /var/lib/dpkg/info/bleachbit.postinst  /var/lib/dpkg/info/bleachbit.prerm
/var/lib/dpkg/info/bleachbit.md5sums  /var/lib/dpkg/info/bleachbit.postrm
The postinst is very very simple, I don't think that's the problem. Any reason why I shouldn't just remove all those files?
@terdon in case of problem how could you remove it? :(
@Braiam What do you mean? In any case I want to remove bleachbit
do sudo dpkg --purge bleachbit remove it?
@Braiam No:
 $ sudo dpkg --purge bleachbit
dpkg: error processing bleachbit (--purge):
 Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should
 reinstall it before attempting a removal.
Errors were encountered while processing:
 bleachbit
I also tried moving the files away from the apt/info dir and that made no difference
yeah, sudo apt-get install --reinstall bleachbit is the way to go
15:09
@Braiam YES! Sweet, thanks, that seems to have done it. I didn't know the --reinstall flag
Ah, that has been really bugging me, I wish I could have posted a Q but it's on LMDE so...
heh, nah
through dpkg is tricky to deal with
I was about to suggest that before, but I wanted to try something else
anyone knows if it's that OP is misunderstanding the procedure or what? askubuntu.com/q/446563/169736

@Braiam I also purged the ppa's. And cleaned my packages.
is this command works?
sudo start lightdm
i think it would be
sudo service lightdm start
Oli
Oli

@AvinashRaj Why? lightdm is an upstart service on all the releases that matter, isn't it?
@Oli will change to systemd ;)
Oli
Oli
And I'd be surprised if that syntax isn't ported over to systemd
service is more regular and supported by init, systemd and upstart
What I want to know is why are we switching to systemd? I haven't heard good things about it.
@Seth cuz Debian rulez!

Hi
askubuntu.com is very busy?
I could not connect to it.
mm? maybe your dns had problems
DNS?
Now I'm using google chrome in ubuntu12.04
15:55
@Oli That actually makes some sense.
It icon is show busy, and after long time, More and Reload button is shown.
Why is it?
Your internet connection isn't good.
Then, How do it?
But I can connect to this chatting room, And I could not with that.
The chat servers are hosted in Oregon. A lot closer to you than New York ;)
There is no chinese?
15:57
no
Oh, I understood.
May I use proxy server to solve it problem? and Which proxy?
No, a proxy probably wouldn't help any.
What is best proxy address for me?
@Seth Seriously? I haven't heard anything good about upstart apart from having very clean code. Everyone seems to be complaining about it. I don't hold a very strong opinion on this but the consensus seems to be against it.
