@Seth it is also saying that there is an error at line:147
Illeagle option -n
Core dumped
@Seth it is also giving the same error at line 167
@hbdgaf Did you get all of that?
@terdon I'm not going to search back and find the exact message to reply to, but I don't think you understand the Ubuntu release cycle. If you don't want to upgrade often you should be on the LTS release. The other releases are for more "bleeding edge" people who are going to upgrade every 6 months. You can't really compare non LTS releases to Windows release. It is true we can take the EOL rule too far sometimes (especially since the new change with 13.04)
but that's what you get when you give your users the power to close how they want ;)
@ElliotLabs use -N not -n, like hbdgaf said.
read -N not read -n
@hbdgaf will try
@Seth ok will do
i'm also SO not running the whole script. you need to highlight somehow lines that are throwing exceptions. i have no desire to have samba not from repo...
@Seth @hbdgaf It is still throwing the same error except it is capitalized this time... :-P
ok just look at the mainmenu function and the following command
21:04
you didn't provide prompt text OR the variable to store it in... nopety nope nope you didn't
@hbdgaf ? Sorry I didn't quite understand that... I am still a novice when it comes to BASH scripting
I am primarrily a Windows user and am trying to get into Linux
which I think will replace Windows in the future
here is a book. it's free and good: tldp.org/LDP/abs/html
(market share wise)
I have been reading that and already have it open in a seperate tab
lol
lets see here.
Lemme pull up one of my uses of read.
answer was posted with the correct syntax
21:10
well now I can't find one..
so good.
@fossfreedom I tried it but it didn't work
"Didn't work" isn't very helpful. What happened?
I am going to hash my cd ISO and see if it is correct
@Seth I did the same thing nothing diffrent
@ElliotLabs you should carry on the conversation by editing your question - post a comment on the answer saying what went wrong
I edited the question so extra code was removed check it again
21:13
you've got someone who is interested (he/she posted an answer) - suggest work with them to get an answer
I don't have enough rep
I can't comment on my question
it requires 50
why are you even asking them to press a key then asking for a menu selection. just drop that whole blob and call mainmenu again...
I have 40
?
@hbdgaf ?
I don't understand can you please reword it?
Remember I am a noob
press any key...
read something
mainmenu

there are two superfluous lines in there... and your problem is in them.
@ElliotLabs impossible, you can comment in your own question and answers
21:15
I can only comment after another user has started comments
Wow @JorgeCastro - you get another star ;)
Oh, oops I accidentally the wrong message.
@hbdgaf From what I understand is that i should have it go like this:`mainmenu () {commands in here}
mainmenu
clear
mainmenu
?
@MichaelHampton you accidentally what?
@Braiam oh, starred the wrong message. That's ok. It probably needed it anyway.
I really came in here to ask: I have seen that you have a feed in here for ubuntu questions posted on U&L. Do you also have a feed for such questions posted on SF?
Oli
Oli
21:19
I accidentally once
As was the fashion at the
@MichaelHampton Nope
@Oli Eh, too bad. Sometimes we get questions that are on topic at SF but would probably be better answered by the Ubuntu community.
@ElliotLabs i think you should probably try simple things and play with it a while. don't try to fix it in your main script. break it out and play with it. i'm so not trying to download and compile samba in a vm to answer a bash question...
@hbdgaf I have separated the mainmenu module and am trying to get to work. Fortunately the answer has been found.
It turned out to be the -p and -n flags were inverted and the output var was in the wrong spot
check out the page I have marked the answer
yep. i saw it already.
21:23
It wasn't me that time!
How did that get a star??? and not this...
20 mins ago, by hbdgaf
you didn't provide prompt text OR the variable to store it in... nopety nope nope you didn't
oh god @MichaelHampton, you broke Oli!
@hbdgaf I didn't understand that
@hbdgaf The latest star was for something that is useful that I have already done. Plus what do the stars do for you?
hmm - we've got a random starrer...
it's a serial star-er
21:27
lol
feel free to purgify the stars
does it give points?
nope. it's a way to point strongly at something.
@ElliotLabs er, no
stars are there to highlight something interesting
21:27
oh ok
I see
The stars give me a good sense of the "flavor" of a room especially if I don't visit it often.
how do you reply to previous comments?
@MichaelHampton ok
@ElliotLabs At the right edge of the text block is an arrow, click it.
@MichaelHampton Oh I see... lol
@hbdgaf k I got it
21:28
@ElliotLabs Almost!
memory overload... blork
@MichaelHampton what did I miss?
@ElliotLabs At the right edge of the text block is an arrow, click it
@MichaelHampton @MichaelHampton I did that already...
@ElliotLabs You're getting there :)
Whoops doubble @
@MichaelHampton anything else I need to do?
21:31
@ElliotLabs Um, write more?
@MichaelHampton\ ...
ok will do in a bit I have to go to a young makers meeting
www.theclubhou.se
@ElliotLabs Wait, it's not in Sweden?
yah you can but the .se from the sweedish government same as .us
it is up to the government to hand out the top level domains for there country
they can say no if they want
but usually that does not happen
gotta go cya!
Have fun!
@MichaelHampton How many Ubuntu questions do you get each day (or so)?
21:35
@Seth Maybe 10-15 tagged ubuntu
And a few more where they forgot to tag it
anyone know if simply having a .edu email address will get you a dreamspark account? like say as an alumnus of school xyz i have a permanent .edu address?
@hbdgaf I think if you have a .edu email they don't do any further checking
@MichaelHampton sweet. free windows test beds for life ;)
Yeah. Wish I still had an .edu email :(
21:39
@hbdgaf so might work
@MichaelHampton i can give a go here for one semester recommendation if you think you'll make 3k back before the loophole is closed...
I got a Websitespark before they killed that program, but it's still active. Doesn't have nearly as much software though it does have free Azure
heck. i did a BS in half a semester and an MS in one and a half... so, just test out of everything on a sideline get a free degree after that decision. if you're good at testing, you can have a couple of accredited degrees pretty quick if you're paying for it anyway.
Maybe I"ll just have my gf sign up for it, she does have a .edu
@MichaelHampton IMO that's a bit much to be pumping in here along with the U&L ones...
21:43
@MichaelHampton good call.
@Seth Quite possibly. And it's only a few questions that I think really need attention anyway.
Well feel free to pop 'em in here then :)

Q: Customized 12.04.3 Ubuntu ISO fails to boot in Virtualbox -- getting stuck at the txt.cfg/Ubuntu boot screen

tristanI'm attempting to make a custom Ubuntu installer, but the ISOs that I'm generating fail to boot in VirtualBox 4.1.18. The raw ISO (downloaded here: http://www.ubuntu.com/start-download?distro=server&bits=64&release=lts) will boot in virtualbox, but my custom ISO will not, getting stuck at the ...

That is on-topic on SF?
@Seth Barely. The VirtualBox thing does weigh against him...
21:47
That's what I figured.
If I didn't reasonably believe it was a professional issue, I would have just migrated it already :)
Off the cuff it looks like providing kernel params 3 times, which doesn't make any sense to me. I'll have to download an ISO to check it and try bumping around the txt.cfg file to replicate the error.
People that ask questions about respins should really post their ISOs in full.
My guess is that it's a simple but subtle error.
probably.
And since it's almost certainly Ubuntu-specific...well, here I am :)
21:52
I think it was in the internetworkexpert CCIE training videos: "It's not that CCIE's don't make mistakes... as currently evidenced. It's that we troubleshoot them really fast."
Can you provide the full ISO that's giving you problems? — hbdgaf 10 secs ago
if you didn't know when people explode, I recommend you to read this Q
@Braiam I' reminded of rise of the triad.

Pandas.
22:18
@Braiam Got an answer for this? askubuntu.com/questions/442445/…
@Seth 13.04...
@Braiam So? It says 13.10 in the title anyway.
@Seth people sucks at tagging
yeah, some people do.
wow, used all my close votes
I mean... 50 close votes D:

aphoticstarfieldI've been running into this error every time I try and update. I have unmet dependencies in my packages, but I have yet to find a way as to how to resolve them. giganticbrain@ubuntu:/usr/lib$ sudo apt-get upgrade Reading package lists... Does anyone, besides Braiam, think that maybe this isn't too broad?

Q: best video converter

neoI need a good video converter software that can convert many video formats from one ot the other. On Windows I found Format Factory to be good. I would like its equivalent or something better on Ubuntu.

the "best", and nearly two pages already
"best" is only in the title, but yeah.
one of those long list things...
That's what I figured most people would say, which is why I closed it.
22:56
tagged with mkv? is that a format he wants then?
yep.
33 mins ago, by Braiam
@Seth people sucks at tagging
doesn't really apply there.
@Seth can the se team do that?
Do what?
23:02
whenever there's and convert it to ?
and the likes
Hum. No, don't think so.
Might be worth a feature request though.
not exactly something that always works though.

BraiamWell, the 10kers (users with more than 10,000 reputation) there's the close queue in the form of 10k-tools, but mere mortals doesn't have this tool at all. But, don't exasperate, you still can spend them using the following query. Take into account that the data is dumped weekly, so you may or ma...
