Q: Xubuntu 13.10 no login screen

FischerI am using the android app so I may not format the question properly. I'm using xubuntu 13.10 64 bit. I had a problem recently with var permissions and I solved it like so http://askubuntu.com/q/431080/116070 It worked. Now I have another issue that just popped up, maybe it's caused by var may...

6:37 PM
@DKBose what ?

@DKBose that's actually "LIKE" :-)

Wasn't this mentioned before? D:

@Braiam ack, btw I like the abbreviation you use ("no repro" sounds good)

Q: Undefined Behavior Killed My Cat

ugorenUndefined Behavior Killed My Cat It's well known that undefined behavior can kill your cat [citation needed]. But can it? Your Task Write a program that invokes undefined behavior. Describe a scenario that starts with the above program being run, resulting in a Felis catus ending its life whi...

Isn't the new hot questions list awesome :D
Sounds to me like the phone is dead, no way you're going to be able to mount it when it's off.

6:56 PM
@Seth I brick my phone, welp!
IMO, he got better chances on apple.se

nah, I doubt it. They aren't Windows or Linux guys.
If we remove the part about mounting it in Linux then yes.

yeah, well, they must have some trick to make iPhone's back to life
I mean, it's Apple, no?

Right.

They call it bricked for a reason...

@AvinashRaj how come you left all those comments here and did not upvote? That question is a rare gem, clear, researched and well written.

@terdon now i do that.
i suggest all the possibilities.
Tried to purge nvidia using the command, but it goes through all the related packages and says none of them are installed, so not removed. I'm still here in the guest account. — user256491 12 mins ago
guest account?
@terdon
> awk -F 'http://ppa.launchpad.net/' '{print $2}' /tmp/update.txt

@terdon Still no logs though :-/

@AvinashRaj thanks

Asked for syslog, kern.log and xorg.0.log
probably don't need all those but.

@terdon sighs he's able to login every time he reinstalls, when he install nvidia drivers then everything goes haywire

7:09 PM
@terdon sorry forget about the command.

cuz, somehow he has been able to install those

@Braiam I don't think so, the problem appears, then he tries to install nvidia to fix it.

I'm going to purge most of those comments, they could be much simpler.
@terdon this

is on-topic.
but dupe.

7:13 PM
ubuntu touch devices question
i think

@Seth which acer table?

@Braiam oh good point. I thought he mentioned it.

@terdon if you VM stopped crashing you may like to answer this one ;) askubuntu.com/q/253035/169736
wait, Ubuntu is host... mm...
I bet is Gedit fault

i clicked on the Bridge room link.Finally the message disappears.What can i do to get back and put my vote on?

@AvinashRaj What are we talking about now?

7:22 PM
sorry

Was it a flag?
Did I miss a flag?!!

yes, spam flag.

@AvinashRaj flags are handled fast in chatrooms, if you didn't that's all

Ahh.

chat spam flag

7:24 PM
@Seth read my last line on the bridge

@Braiam this. If you don't catch it the first time too bad.

@Braiam my guess is that the OP is using the wrong clipboard. Trying to use middle click instead of Ctrl+V or vice versa

Wait, middle click and Ctrl + V are different clipboards? o_O

@Seth yup
At least on most Unices, unless Ubuntu has changed that.

Not sure
@terdon I'd remove the reference to 13.04 in your question. 13.04 is EOL and you're gonna get close voters for that.

7:36 PM
Anyway, that's not the issue, I have the same problem with my (still crashing VM), works for the windows guest but not the Ubuntu

(just the last reference)

@Seth seriously? I just downloaded it yesterday from Canonical's website! That's the one you get when you download Ubuntu.
@terdon Damn, scratch that, I'm using 13.10. Editing now

Ahhh
that's better. I wondered why you were using 13.04 instead of 13.10 lol.

@Seth I could answer that but not without insulting the OP ;)
By the way, here's more than you ever wanted to know about the different clipboards:

Oh wow. Thanks

7:40 PM
BBT :-)

8:05 PM
@AvinashRaj that's great! Grats :)

8:23 PM
now i'm on rooted kitkat with the bcmon driver on my nexus 7. gets closer to a home-grown pwnpad...

@Seth cool! Thanks :)

installs python3... this takes WAY more work than it should... I need to back up this image when I'm done...

8:49 PM
grr... sl4a is being uncooperative...

9:13 PM
@Seth are you around?

@guntbert I am now :)

@Seth (about our recent comments on meta): I don't think it is "a big fuss" - I see it as counterproductive when you are treated "unfair" by getting told you didn't pay attention when you indeed paid very much attention - even it is a machine that treats you that way.

@guntbert shrug. You just have to brush it off. Like I said, the audit system only knows what's bad by the actions you take.
That sounds harsh, but that's the way it is.
It's just words, on a computer screen. Don't worry about it :)
Once you're contacted by the moderators, that's when you should start worrying ;)

I don't propose to cancel the audits but to tweak them - which was promised by kag9 ("we will keep a close eye...") (if I remember the nick correctly) and seemingly didn't happen, yet. You see I am not worried at all - but it annoys me when I am told off wrongly - maybe it's the wording too - my point: the audits in their current form eat up ressources unnecessarily. I repeat myself: keep them but ask the powers that be to improve them.

Yes, most everyone can agree with you there, however that should be done with constructive on MSO (you can post them on meta.au, but I don't recommend it).
I think it's already been proposed actually, lower the amount of audits for certain users per x audits failed over y times

9:32 PM
@Seth strange, shog9 said to post them meta.au (meta.askubuntu.com/questions/7812/should-we-get-review-audits/…)

Yep, that's reports. I'd suggest putting feature requests on MSO if you want anyone to see them though.

understood - won't bug no no more with that :-)

bugging us is fine, just make it new and constructive. It's always best to step back for an hour or two after you get annoyed, makes for better meta posts ;)

9:51 PM
python3 working now... not much left until the nexus 7 is covered in awesomesauce ;)

@Seth I'll keep my promise - no more rants from me about the audits - especially nothing after being freshly annoyed - I don't open the review queue at the moment at all :-)

@guntbert it seems more and more people are feeling that way. pretty soon nobody will be touching it

@hbdgaf well I certainly don't intend to initiate anything like a strike - I only know not to do things that tend to annoy me when I can do things that don't annoy me in that time.

that's fair. it was just an observation.

g'night :-)

9:57 PM
night

@hbdgaf oh, cool - got out the nexus 7 again? I haven't touched mine in a while.

@Mateo yeah, i restored to vanilla kitkat today, then added root, the bcmon driver with the new apk they released for RECon, and python3

nice

interesting at least a little, although i thought i'ld be happier when i finished...
on the upside, it means the aircrack-like functionality i was trying to do in python would become useful again since bcmon doesn't react properly to queries... even if it sets things properly and allows monitor and injection.
i was a little frustrated for a bit because google-play installs of sl4a and py4a didn't work. had to go the non-app-store route to get the apks directly so they worked...

@hbdgaf hm, are they doing something to change them for the store somehow?

10:13 PM
@Mateo I don't think the ones in the app store are legitimately sl4a etc. I think it's someone's respin that tries to do things a little differently and it breaks stuff. It might be a path-ing issue since different android devices have notoriously different paths...

so sort-of what nathan was running into with ssl

Sort of.
Either way, it works now...
It baffles me that android even has a setting "poll for wireless access points even if wifi is disabled"... makes you wonder what else android is doing without you knowing about it under the hood.

@hbdgaf ah, yeah. I found that setting and turned it off...

at least it asked me on first boot...

there were some others like keeping wifi on during sleep (turned off for battery), the nexus 5 nearly flatlines on sleep (as long as certain apps aren't keeping it on...)

10:29 PM
nice. i'm trying to get as much of the pwnpad-like functionality as i can in to vanilla kitkat instead of doing the multi-rom thing again. pwnpad latest is compiled with kexec support OOTB btw.
o.O @KodduX - Ozzie quotes in the profile for the win

@hbdgaf :-D

10:58 PM
ooh, pip works on py4a3k now :)

11:09 PM
....and it is still happening.
I got ya!

@Lucio BEWARE! it has a close vote
D:

@Lucio I was defending you earlier with the English not being your native language.

I saw that, thanks for your support
Now I don't want to use the review system anymore.

My point was that translations are often clunky in their wording and the immediate-bad in some of the audits could be recognized as clunky wording or wrong structure without even interpreting word meaning.
@Lucio anyway. no problem. i see how some things could be problematic for some users.

@Mateo do u remember my story about an always-unsatisfied-client?
The guy was using IE.
End of the story.

11:25 PM
People still use IE? smh

@hbdgaf (in my countrie)

@Braiam what if you try to start zeitgeist twice or make the database file non-accessible for the current user?
