What is new in Kernel 3.0? http://bit.ly/p6MfzB #kernel
01:18
@GeorgeEdison did you purchase it all?
@MarcoCeppi Nope - read the bottom of this question.
hey @MarcoCeppi can ya check the ubuntu regulators room?
@TheEvilPhoenix I did (I'm always in there)
@GeorgeEdison nice, all I have in a nalgen :)
01:42
@MarcoCeppi Cool.
@MarcoCeppi thanks
I HOPE 11.10 DITCHES BANSHEE!!!1!11
I hate that application. Crashes waaaaay too often.
Just uninstall it :)
I first need a good alternative.
@GeorgeEdison Banshee works great on my machine anyway.
01:49
@JohanSJA Thanks, but I've kind of made up my mind that I need an alternative.
Sure. Knowing that there is always an alternative is what we have in this FOSS world.
That's what makes it so wonderful.
I updated my IE-hating answer:
11
A: What version of Internet Explorer (IE) should my web app support

George EdisonNone. Seriously. You should not support IE. It stinks. Edit: since I originally wrote this answer, Internet Explorer 9 has been released. IE9 offers significant improvements over its predecessors and is a much more worthy competitor in the browser market. Having said that, it still has a lon...

04:25
@JohanSJA I hope you don't mind that I converted this N4030 answer into a comment. It didn't seem to answer the question to me. (i.e. "how to get it working on 10.04")
there are quite a lot of users who rely on the LTS release because they can't afford to upgrade every six months, so we take good care to document the LTS properly, for its entire lifetime
05:00
@StefanoPalazzo that's fine for me.
I do understand that you guys are doing it for the sake of the website to keep it organized anyway.
we try :-)

Morning!
Morning
I want to port Android on custom made hardware. Is it possible?
05:44
@hotveryspicy morning :) this probably isn't the right place to ask this question, but there's an Android Stack Exchange (with it's own chat room)
room is silent.
yeah, 11 days since the last message :(
yes. so sad
but if you can phrase your problem more specifically, you should ask a question on the android site, and check if it's been discussed before

Good morning all
06:46
Oh dear... trouble has come.
The newest kernel update won't boot.
Why does 11.04 freezes randomly http://bit.ly/nDrVxH #1104
I immediately get a kernel panic as soon as it starts booting.
Thank goodness the previous kernel was still around.
that speaks not in favour of the updated kernel :/
No, it certainly doesn't.

Arduino is an open-source single-board microcontroller, descendant of the open-source Wiring platform, designed to make the process of using electronics in multidisciplinary projects more accessible. The hardware consists of a simple open hardware design for the Arduino board with an Atmel AVR processor and on-board I/O support. The software consists of a standard programming language compiler and the boot loader that runs on the board. Arduino hardware is programmed using a Wiring-based language (syntax + libraries), similar to C++ with some simplifications and modifications, and a ...

how do I change the name of a folder via the terminal?
with 'mv' alvar
~$ mkdir tmp
~$ mv tmp/ tmp2/
...
@Rinzwind can I do it in one command?
yeah the last one ;-)
you do not need the mkdir do you? since you already have a dir :=)
not funny
@Rinzwind btw this doesn't change the name, this just replaces the folder, which is a bit hard if it's a big folder (top of the tree)
Oli
Oli
@Alvar @Rinzwind has told you what to do. His example shows creating a directory just as the example. You want to mv yourcurrentdirectory yournewdirectoryname

@Rinzwind Yeah it's owned by a company that is owned by another company that went thoroughly bust (owners went to prison for fraud). Expires in a couple of years time so I'll be watching and waiting.
@Oli ok... thanks
StackFusion
@Oli can't you pre-claim the domain? >:D
12:21
is there a good list of commands like mv and mkdir and all that?
@Alvar yes!
one sec
:D
like this one alvar?
Oli
Oli
@Rinzwind Not sure what you mean by pre-claim. It's technically owned by somebody (probably a bankruptcy arbitration firm) and I think they've forgotten that it exists. All the email contacts go to the domain of the main company (that went bankrupt) so there's no easy way to know who to speak to. I'm almost tempted not to contact anybody. If they realise they own a three-letter-dot-com, they might auction it off.
I got more >-D @alvar

@Rinzwind but with higer resolution! :D
I need to know all the mv -r means aswell

Q: How to become a UBUNTU developer?

MunnaI have some knowledge in shell programming, and lot of interest in using ubuntu os. I have to go deeper as a programmer for ubuntu. What i have to know and wt is the proper way?

If I move a file to the folder I am in, what is the second part of the command? (the first is the way to the file)
@Rinzwind do you know what I mean?
@rinzwind should the command be mv currentfolder/path/to/file currentfolder/ ?
14:00
um
@Rinzwind mv /path/to/source ./ would work
so if say
its in currentfolder/path/to/file,
you can do this:
mv ./path/to/file ./
the "." denotes "HERE" which is whatever folder you're currently in
".." is up one lvl, and "." is current lvl I think....
mhm
../ would refer to the parent of the folder you are in now
for example
my terminal defaults to /home/USER/ for the default opening location
when i type ../, its referring to just /home/
so ../USER2 would be /home/USER2/
when I am in USER's home folder
this is how my tests look like...
the names are in swedish and I have to move "rolex" to "digital" or delete "analog" and all the files in it
there were no good exercises before the test so I jsut do the test a couple of times until I get 100%...
so you want to move the fodler "rolex" into digital?
where are we now :P
btw your move
@TheEvilPhoenix no ur move! ;)
@TheEvilPhoenix "digital"
14:08
okay...
if we are in digital...
and are moving analog/rolex to digital...
then...
so the command should look like this:
mv ../analog/rolex ./
mv ../analog/rolex/ ./
yep
:D
note i always add the / at the end to make sure i know its a folder ;)
btw this wasn't exactly the task, I had to do, but it was similar...
14:10
mhm
btw, you're in check
:P
@TheEvilPhoenix i know
14:41
@Rinzwind Hey I used to have that one on my notice board here until I could have a rough undertanding of what they all were...have not seen it now for a while...maybe somehere moved it
OW! damn... working with computers and servers can be painful... i just sliced my finger on a sharp metal bit >.>
stupid malfunctioning hardware requiring me to open the system to replace it...
this system has been elevated to an elite group of computers which have drawn blood or caused injury to me.
have any of you ever had a power supply explode in your face?
I have
its not fun
whooo, 1802 rep on AU... only about 2 more weeks and I might get 2k rep finally :P
@TheEvilPhoenix I never forget working behind a desktop and pulling the wrong wire to end up with an old monitor (ie heavy) that was not balanced right ...on my head..felt more stupid than anything at first til the blood ran all over the floor..I was then not only injured but in trouble for making a mess !
Desk went up to the wall after that!
fortunately for me, when the power supply exploded it was in a lab environment (had a computer in the tech lab being serviced), so we were ready to combat that
my hand, however, was not ready for it and got burned
14:49
ouch too
you know those huge capacitors in those things?
in the back of a pc
inside the power supply
which is in the back of a PC
anyways i was holding a small flashlight into the thing to see if it had burned out (lack of power to the systems),
and didn't notice the bulging cap on the capacitors...
few seconds later, POP BAM "OW, DAMN IT!!", 6 people came over, and my hand was burned
thankfully my face wasnt near the actual things :P
thats why they put screws on em..to keep people out! ..that and sharp edges ;)
hehe
except i'm trained to work on these things
so...
yeah, newbie mistake :P
i learned from it :P
14:52
yeh!
(1) When wokring with evil power supplies... place them in a bulletproof an explosion-resistant chamber.
hola senoritas!
get some one else to hold the torch
(2) Place some C4 next to the thing.
(3) Watch the fireworks
@andybleaden and that
experience and cowardice always keeps you safer than a qualification
14:55
mhm
training helps to recognize the problem situations though
i just overlooked a step that day :/
but hey, as I couldnt do my work then, i got workers comp benefits for the two weeks it took my hand to heal :p
and was stuck answering helpdesk calls
which was evil
more painfil too
hey @Alvar welcome back :P
@htorque konnichiwa
:P
15:11
nothing too interesting in here, i see :P
nope
although i think that i'm about to beat @Alvar for the second chess game in a row :P
cant be sure though
since he seems to have afk'd
oh good my lunch break is soon
i beat a couple of higher elo guys
just because of my chaos tactics (i don't know chess)
lolol
yeah, @Alvar beat me the first game... i came back and beat him the second game...
afaict, i may win the third game
but thats dependent on his next moves
which then change my strategy
(or fall right into the expected strategy :P)
once you think too logic, i'll beat you with my lack of knowledge :D
@htorque i'd like to see you try to beat a rating 1500 computer :P
15:14
unfortunately most of the time this only works once per guy
:D
"damn, what's he doing? i don't know that tactic. what's that maneuver? *explode*"
@TheEvilPhoenix no problem with a 0day exploit :D
@htorque then i challenge you to beat a world master at chess
i'd like to see if your chaos strategy works :P
no, i'm not a world master :P
he'll resign due to my incompetence
-> default win
:D
lol
or he might kick your butt in 3 moves :P
(like I've done to grossly-inferior players :P)
i know those humiliating moves (from experience), so that won't happen :D
@Alvar welcome back again
15:19
@TheEvilPhoenix thanks :P lol
there is a move waiting for ya
and i think you arent going to like the current positiioning on the board :P
holy... its supposed to go up to 101 today????
and its 98 degrees out?
EVIL WEATHER!!!
(good for me though :P)
crap I'll lose this one aswell .....
it means that instead of espressos...
i get FROZEN COFFEE DRINKS
@TheEvilPhoenix how? :O
@Alvar you could always...
resign
15:23
resign?
@Alvar there's a coffee shop down the street... called "Starbucks"... they have decent frozen coffee stuffs
:P
@TheEvilPhoenix cool... I live on the countryside...
where there are no "starbucks" but USA coffee stinks! it's like normal coffee but with added the double amount of water. which is just stupid...
in the instructions for my Aero press it said "of you want american coffee you just need to add half a cup of water to the finish drink."
lol
and this is why espresso drinks rule
because for the amount of liquid...
the caffeine content and bitterness is crazy
and when i drink coffee i always brew it strong
even though i am american :p
debian branch distros can only install .deb packages right? I can't set up my ubuntu system to install .rpm packages right?
@TheEvilPhoenix nice
15:29
@JoshuaRobison i dont think you can... if yum is in the repos, you can TRY, but i dont know if you'll succeed.
@TheEvilPhoenix, yes o:-)
@JoshuaRobison just compile from source if you cant get it in a .deb
darn... why am I in the mood for burritos... filled with steak... >.>
@TheEvilPhoenix, which brings me to my next question. fedora and redhat use rpm right? and what do openSUSE and ARch use?
dont know about those.
i know CentOS and RHEL-based systems use RPMs
Debian and Devian derivitaves use .deb packages
dunno about the others
@TheEvilPhoenix, the reason I am asking is I want to start digging in and researching which repos will get me the most powerpc binaries
15:31
um...
Im running karmic on my powerpc g4 powerbok
coool
and ubuntu and debian are really great with powerpc distroes
there's almost nothing they lack
i'd say start testing en masse :p
I ran 8.04 server on my power mac g3!
until the hard drive crashed...
15:32
lol
@Alvar i'll accept your defeat now if you want. I'll write it in as "Black has resigned."
@TheEvilPhoenix ? :O
@Alvar, I have actually tweeked my system to install from the debian squeeze and linux mint ppc repos as well
the mix of those three is really getting me a nice solid powerpc system
cool
eww... Mint...
you know its unsupported in ubuntu right?
15:34
I think KARMIC and mint9 packages mix well and I have had no problems at all
@TheEvilPhoenix then do so... in any case what ever I did will get my queen taken...
but Karmic is reaching EOL
@Alvar type into the chess room then that you've resigned
i'll update the PGN and my end :P
@JoshuaRobison one morning some system files had disapered and after that it wouldn't bot the system :(
@TheEvilPhoenix, but even if you say it is unsupported, "launchpad" still provides all the powerpc binaries, including binaries for oceiric ocelot (sp?)
How to become a UBUNTU developer? http://bit.ly/qydkDB #1104
15:36
I've been thinking of isntalling 10.04 again to see if it works.
but it might be a waste of time since it might crash again....
@Alvar, yea! try. I'm not sure about G3 cause im running g4 1.5ghz but I know that Karmic is running nice on my base debian squeeze gnome install
@TheEvilPhoenix whoooot
@Alvar, I started out by installing debian sqeeze mind you
@JoshuaRobison well I have 400mb ram and 300 mhz cpu
@JoshuaRobison I will jsut install the 10.04 server with no graphical interface...
@Alvar, wow. I would prolly run lxde on that I think O_o
15:38
I don't think my old g3 can handle a graphical...
@JoshuaRobison what is lxde?
@Alvar, if it's just for a server then just install something like centos
@JoshuaRobison it could barely handle mac os x 10.3
@JoshuaRobison ok...
@Alvar, LXDE is a replacement for gnome
it is super lightweight
if your system is crunching under gnome and stalls out a lot
15:39
@JoshuaRobison but I don't want a graphical interface
try installing the ubuntu lxde / lubuntu desktop files
it's more fun without it...
and it will work fine
I will anyway just connect throw ssh anyway
it even looks nice O_o
15:40
8.04 server was really fast! :P
but anyone know what kind of packages arch use? they don't use rpm right?
and openSUSE?
I have no idea.....
Oli
Oli
@JoshuaRobison Their use their own.
Very similar to debs and rpms but not cross-compatible.
